Abstract:Biomedical polymers have been extensively developed for promising applications in a lot of biomedical fields, such as therapeutic medicine delivery, disease detection and diagnosis, biosensing, regenerative medicine, and disease treatment. In this review, we summarize the most recent advances in the synthesis and application of biomedical polymers, and discuss the comprehensive understanding of their property-function relationship for corresponding biomedical applications. In particular, a few burgeoning bioactive polymers, such as peptide/biomembrane/microorganism/cell-based biomedical polymers, are also introduced and highlighted as the emerging biomaterials for cancer precision therapy. Furthermore, the foreseeable challenges and outlook of the development of more efficient, healthier and safer biomedical polymers are discussed. We wish this systemic and comprehensive review on highlighting frontier progress of biomedical polymers could inspire and promote new breakthrough in fundamental research and clinical translation.

Abstract:Zwitterionic polymers have anion and cation groups simultaneously, which make them highly hydrated and render them unique biocompatibility. Because of their unique zwitterionic pendant-side chain structures, sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA) polymers present the excellent anti-biofouling properties, i. e. the resistance to protein adsorption, the inhibition of bacterial and blood coagulation, which make them increasingly applied in a wide range of biological and medical related fields recently. The hydration theory, one of the widely accepted antifouling mechanisms, is briefly introduced. In this article, recent progress in the properties, synthesis methods and surface construction methods is reviewed, the applications of SBMA polymers in the materials for artificial organs, tissue engineering, biological separation, bio-monitoring system and temperature-sensitive materials are summarized. In addition, SBMA polymers holding great potential for use in biomaterials and issues existed in these applications are also discussed.

Abstract:Synthetic polymers have been extensively exploited for biomedical and pharmacological applications, spanning from surgical devices, diagnostics, tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, to drug delivery systems. However, a fundamental and quantitative correlation between the primary chemical structures of polymeric biomaterials and the resulting biological responses remains elusive. Encouragingly, the advent and development of sequence-defined polymers (SDPs) provide an unprecedented opportunity to precisely tune their sequence information, intrachain folding, interchain self-assembly, and macroscopic properties, enabling the elucidation of the structure–property relationship of biomaterials. In this Perspective, we highlight recent advances of SDPs as next-generation functional biomaterials, and their potential applications in antimicrobial agents, bioactive ligands, precision drug delivery systems, bioimaging agents, and barcoded biomaterials, from sequence-defined synthetic oligomers and polymers. Finally, we present a critical outlook on the challenges in the design and development of SDP-based emergent biomaterials.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:The interface between material science and ophthalmic medicine is witnessing significant advances with the introduction of biopolymers in medical device fabrication. This review discusses the impact of biopolymers on the development of ophthalmic devices, such as intraocular lenses, stents, and various prosthetics. Biopolymers are emerging as superior alternatives due to their biocompatibility, mechanical robustness, and biodegradability, presenting an advance over traditional materials with respect to patient comfort and environmental considerations. We explore the spectrum of biopolymers used in ophthalmic devices and evaluate their physical properties, compatibility with biological tissues, and clinical performances. Specific applications in oculoplastic and orbital surgeries, hydrogel applications in ocular therapeutics, and polymeric drug delivery systems for a range of ophthalmic conditions were reviewed. We also anticipate future directions and identify challenges in the field, advocating for a collaborative approach between material science and ophthalmic practice to foster innovative, patient-focused treatments. This synthesis aims to reinforce the potential of biopolymers to improve ophthalmic device technology and enhance clinical outcomes.

Abstract:As a novel class of dynamic and non‐covalent polymers, supramolecular polymers not only display specific structural and physicochemical properties, but also have the ability to undergo reversible changes of structure, shape, and function in response to diverse external stimuli, making them promising candidates for widespread applications ranging from academic research to industrial fields. By an elegant combination of dynamic/reversible structures with exceptional functions, functional supramolecular polymers are attracting increasing attention in various fields. In particular, functional supramolecular polymers offer several unique advantages, including inherent degradable polymer backbones, smart responsiveness to various biological stimuli, and the ease for the incorporation of multiple biofunctionalities (e.g., targeting and bioactivity), thereby showing great potential for a wide range of applications in the biomedical field. In this Review, the trends and representative achievements in the design and synthesis of supramolecular polymers with specific functions are summarized, as well as their wide‐ranging biomedical applications such as drug delivery, gene transfection, protein delivery, bioimaging and diagnosis, tissue engineering, and biomimetic chemistry. These achievements further inspire persistent efforts in an emerging interdisciplinary research area of supramolecular chemistry, polymer science, material science, biomedical engineering, and nanotechnology.

Abstract:Polymers stand out as promising materials extensively employed in biomedicine and biotechnology. Their versatile applications owe much to the field of tissue engineering, which seamlessly integrates materials engineering with medical science. In medicine, biomaterials serve as prototypes for organ development and as implants or scaffolds to facilitate body regeneration. With the growing demand for innovative solutions, synthetic and hybrid polymer materials, such as polyethersulfone, are gaining traction. This article offers a concise characterization of polyethersulfone followed by an exploration of its diverse applications in medical and biotechnological realms. It concludes by summarizing the significant roles of polyethersulfone in advancing both medicine and biotechnology, as outlined in the accompanying table.

Abstract:Utilization of polymers as biomaterials has greatly impacted the advancement of modern medicine. Specifically, polymeric biomaterials that are biodegradable provide the significant advantage of being able to be broken down and removed after they have served their function. Applications are wide ranging with degradable polymers being used clinically as surgical sutures and implants. In order to fit functional demand, materials with desired physical, chemical, biological, biomechanical and degradation properties must be selected. Fortunately, a wide range of natural and synthetic degradable polymers has been investigated for biomedical applications with novel materials constantly being developed to meet new challenges. This review summarizes the most recent advances in the field over the past 4 years, specifically highlighting new and interesting discoveries in tissue engineering and drug delivery applications.

Abstract:Natural and synthetic polymers are a versatile platform for developing biomaterials in the biomedical and environmental fields. Natural polymers are organic compounds that are found in nature. The most common natural polymers include polysaccharides, such as alginate, hyaluronic acid, and starch, proteins, e.g., collagen, silk, and fibrin, and bacterial polyesters. Natural polymers have already been applied in numerous sectors, such as carriers for drug delivery, tissue engineering, stem cell morphogenesis, wound healing, regenerative medicine, food packaging, etc. Various synthetic polymers, including poly(lactic acid), poly(acrylic acid), poly(vinyl alcohol), polyethylene glycol, etc., are biocompatible and biodegradable; therefore, they are studied and applied in controlled drug release systems, nano-carriers, tissue engineering, dispersion of bacterial biofilms, gene delivery systems, bio-ink in 3D-printing, textiles in medicine, agriculture, heavy metals removal, and food packaging. In the following review, recent advancements in polymer chemistry, which enable the imparting of specific biomedical functions of polymers, will be discussed in detail, including antiviral, anticancer, and antimicrobial activities. This work contains the authors' experimental contributions to biomedical and environmental polymer applications. This review is a vast overview of natural and synthetic polymers used in biomedical and environmental fields, polymer synthesis, and isolation methods, critically assessessing their advantages, limitations, and prospects.

Abstract:Functional hydrogels are used for numerous biomedical applications such as tissue engineering, wound dressings, lubricants, contact lenses and advanced drug delivery systems. Most of them are based on synthetic or natural polymers forming a three-dimensional network that contains aqueous media. Among synthetic polymers, poly(meth)acrylates, polyethyleneglycols, poly(vinylalcohols), poly(vinylpyrrolidones), PLGA and poly(urethanes) are of high relevance, whereas natural polymers are mainly polysaccharides such as hyaluronic acid, alginate or chitosan and proteins such as albumin, collagen or elastin. In contrast to most synthetic polymers, natural polymers are biodegradable. Both synthetic and natural polymers are often chemically modified in order to improve or induce favorable properties and functions like high mechanical strength, stiffness, elasticity, high porosity, adhesive properties, in situ gelling properties, high water binding capacity or drug release controlling properties. Within this review we provide an overview about the broad spectrum of biomedical applications of functional hydrogels, summarize innovative approaches, discuss the concept of relevant functional hydrogels that are in clinical trials and highlight advanced products as examples for successful developments.

Abstract:Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), as a natural polymer material, carries almost all the genetic information and is recognized as one of the most intelligent natural polymers. In the past 20 years, there have been many exciting advances in the synthesis of hydrogels using DNA as the main backbone or cross-linking agent. Different methods, such as physical entanglement and chemical cross-linking, have been developed to perform the gelation of DNA hydrogels. The good designability, biocompatibility, designable responsiveness, biodegradability and mechanical strength provided by DNA building blocks facilitate the application of DNA hydrogels in cytoscaffolds, drug delivery systems, immunotherapeutic carriers, biosensors and nanozyme-protected scaffolds. This review provides an overview of the main classification and synthesis methods of DNA hydrogels and highlights the application of DNA hydrogel in biomedical fields. It aims to give readers a better understanding of DNA hydrogels and development trends.

Abstract:The past decades have seen significant research effort in the field of polymers for a range of biomedical applications, driven by the promising prospect of these materials for realizing next generation therapeutics in the clinic. In this regard, it is widely accepted that polymer properties such as chemistry, charge, and block composition, as well as properties of their self-assemblies including size, shape, surface chemistry, and biodegradation, all influence and direct their interactions with cells and biological membranes. In particular, polymer hydrophobicity is a property of interest, with growing evidence demonstrating the significant impact that hydrophobic interactions with lipid membranes and proteins can have on biomaterial application efficacy within the body. However, to date, this phenomenon has been relatively underexplored, and therefore there exists no clear universal understanding to direct polymer design. In this Perspective, we highlight important contributions to this field, focusing on seminal studies which investigate experimentally and theoretically how incorporation of hydrophobic moieties within polymer systems can influence their ultimate properties when used in biomedical applications. In this way, we aim to signify future directions in the design of highly performing polymers for biomedicine, making a case for the importance of standardized computational modeling to achieve widely applicable conclusions and facilitate future translational efforts.

Abstract:Biopolymers are particularly suitable for drug applications due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and low immunogenicity. There has been growing interest in using biopolymers to achieve the controlled release of therapeutics. However, the solubility and processability of biopolymers remain challenging due to their structural heterogeneity and dense networks of inter- and intramolecular interactions. Fortunately, ionic liquids (ILs), regarded as green solvents, have been increasingly appreciated for their unparalleled power for biopolymer processing. By the dissolution of biopolymers in ILs, various materials including sponges, films, microparticles (MPs), nanoparticles (NPs), and aerogels can be generated as potential drug delivery carriers. Besides, ILs can be used as reaction media and/or catalysts for biopolymer chemical reactions, which show enhanced reaction efficiencies. In addition, because of their unique physicochemical (e.g., polarity, hydrophobicity, amphipathicity and miscibility) and biological properties (e.g., antibacterial activity), ILs can assist or participate in the formation of drug delivery carriers. To cover all these aspects of the research, this review provides an overview of the recent progress in using ILs for the engineering of next-generation drug/gene delivery carrier materials. The tunable properties of ILs as affected by their structures are highlighted. Also, the key principles, challenges and prospects of this area are presented.

Abstract:3D printing technology is an emerging method that gained extensive attention from researchers worldwide, especially in the health and medical fields. Biopolymers are an emerging class of materials offering excellent properties and flexibility for additive manufacturing. Biopolymers are widely used in biomedical applications in biosensing, immunotherapy, drug delivery, tissue engineering and regeneration, implants, and medical devices. Various biodegradable and non-biodegradable polymeric materials are considered as bio-ink for 3d printing. Here, we offer an extensive literature review on the current applications of synthetic biopolymers in the field of 3D printing. A trend in the publication of biopolymers in the last 10 years are focused on the review by analyzing more than 100 publications. Their application and classification based on biodegradability are discussed. The various studies, along with their practical applications, are elaborated in the subsequent sections for polyethylene, polypropylene, polycaprolactone, polylactide, etc. for biomedical applications. The disadvantages of various biopolymers are discussed, and future perspectives like combating biocompatibility problems using 3D printed biomaterials to build compatible prosthetics are also discussed and the potential application of using resin with the combination of biopolymers to build customized implants, personalized drug delivery systems and organ on a chip technologies are expected to open a new set of chances for the development of healthcare and regenerative medicine in the future.

Abstract:Synthetic biodegradable elastomers, such as polyesters and polyurethanes have revolutionized biomedical therapeutic strategies and devices. Driven by innovations in chemical synthesis and processing technologies, a series of biodegradable elastomers and corresponding devices with controllable properties and various functionalities have been developed. In this review, we have summarized the recent progress in synthesis, process technologies, and biomedical applications of biodegradable elastomers. Particular emphasis is on the molecular design for biodegradability, elasticity, and the newly developed functionalities including self-healing, antibacterial, fluorescence, and shape-memory of biodegradable polyesters and polyurethane as well as their corresponding processing strategies. Subsequently, the recent progress of biodegradable elastomers in different biomedical applications is reviewed. A comprehensive conclusion and outlook pointing out emerging research directions, future challenges and potential solutions complete this work.

Abstract:Synthetic polymers have been widely utilized in biomedical applications by controlling their physicochemical characteristics and enhancing their biocompatibility. As natural polymers produced by cells generally show undesirable mechanical and physical properties with the risk of potential protein denaturation, synthetic polymers offer a more controllable platform for specific applications in biomedicine with distinctive properties and functionality. With the development of biochemical technology and polymer science, cell-mediated in-situ polymerization including polymerization inside cells and on the surface of cells, instead of direct transferring synthetic polymers to cells, has received much research interest. In this review, we summarize the polymerization methods used for living cell-mediated in-situ polymerization including radical polymerization, step-growth polymerization, and oxidative polymerization. Furthermore, the biological effects induced by these polymers against living cells and animals are also discussed. We hope this review could stimulate more research and collaborations among researchers in the fields of materials science, polymer chemistry, and biology to promote the use of polymer-based theranostics in practical applications and clinical trials.

Abstract:The effective management of atmospheric water will create huge value for mankind. Diversified and sustainable biopolymers that are derived from organisms provide rich building blocks for various hygroscopic materials. Here, a comprehensive review of recent advances in developing biopolymers for hygroscopic materials is provided. It is begun with a brief introduction of species diversity and the processes of obtaining various biopolymer materials from organisms. The fabrication of hygroscopic materials is then illustrated, with a specific focus on the use of biopolymer-derived materials as substrates to produce composites and the use of biopolymers as building blocks to fabricate composite gels. Next, the representative applications of biopolymer-derived hygroscopic materials for dehumidification, atmospheric water harvesting, and power generation are systematically presented. An outlook on future challenges and key issues worthy of attention are finally provided.

Abstract:Biomedical polymers play a key role in preventing, diagnosing, and treating diseases, showcasing a wide range of applications. Their unique advantages, such as rich source, good biocompatibility, and excellent modifiability, make them ideal biomaterials for drug delivery, biomedical imaging, and tissue engineering. However, conventional biomedical polymers suffer from poor degradation in vivo, increasing the risks of bioaccumulation and potential toxicity. To address these issues, degradable biomedical polymers can serve as an alternative strategy in biomedicine. Degradable biomedical polymers can efficiently relieve bioaccumulation in vivo and effectively reduce patient burden in disease management. This review comprehensively introduces the classification and properties of biomedical polymers and the recent research progress of degradable biomedical polymers in various diseases. Through an in-depth analysis of their classification, properties, and applications, we aim to provide strong guidance for promoting basic research and clinical translation of degradable biomedical polymers.

Abstract:Abstract Organic polymer coatings have been commonly used in biomedical field, which play an important role in achieving biological antifouling, drug delivery, and bacteriostasis. With the continuous development of polymer science, organic polymer coatings can be designed with complex and advanced functions, which is conducive to the construction of biomedical materials with different performances. According to different physical and chemical properties of materials, biomedical organic polymer coating materials are classified into zwitterionic polymers, non-ionic polymers, and biomacromolecules. The strategies of combining coatings with substrates include physical adsorption, chemical grafting, and self-adhesion. Though the coating materials and construction methods are different, many biomedical polymer coatings have been developed to achieve excellent performances, i.e., enhanced lubrication, anti-inflammation, antifouling, antibacterial, drug release, anti-encrustation, anti-thrombosis, etc. Consequently, a large number of biomedical polymer coatings have been used in artificial lungs, ureteral stent, vascular flow diverter, and artificial joints. In this review, we summarize different types, properties, construction methods, biological functions, and clinical applications of biomedical organic polymer coatings, and prospect future direction for development of organic polymer coatings in biomedical field. It is anticipated that this review can be useful for the design and synthesis of functional organic polymer coatings with various biomedical purposes.
