Abstract:The rapid global spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) at the beginning of 2020 presented the world with its greatest health challenge in decades. It soon became clear that governments were unprepared to respond appropriately to this crisis. National and international public health authorities were confused about the transmission routes of the virus and the control measures required to protect against it. In particular, the need to reduce the risk of infection through sufficient and effective ventilation of indoor spaces was given little attention. In this review, we discuss insights and key lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic regarding the role of ventilation as an effective means against airborne transmission of pathogens and, more broadly, for supporting good indoor air quality.

Prediction and control of aerosol transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in ventilated context: from source to receptor

Abstract:Global spread of COVID-19 has seriously threatened human life and health. The aerosol transmission route of SARS-CoV-2 is observed often associated with infection clusters under poorly ventilated environment. In the context of COVID-19 pandemic, significant transformation and optimization of traditional ventilation systems are needed. This paper is aimed to offer better understanding and insights into effective ventilation design to maximize its ability in airborne risk control, for particularly the COVID-19. Comprehensive reviews of each phase of aerosol transmission of SARS-CoV-2 from source to receptor are conducted, so as to provide a theoretical basis for risk prediction and control. Infection risk models and their key parameters for risk assessment of SARS-CoV-2 are analyzed. Special focus is given on the efficacy of different ventilation strategies in mitigating airborne transmission. Ventilation interventions are found mainly impacting on the dispersion and inhalation phases of aerosol transmission. The airflow patterns become a key factor in controlling the aerosol diffusion and distribution. Novel and personalized ventilation design, effective integration with other environmental control techniques and resilient HVAC system design to adapt both common and epidemic conditions are still remaining challenging, which need to be solved with the aid of multidisciplinary research and intelligent technologies.

Abstract:During the normalization phase of the COVID-19 epidemic, society has gradually reverted to using building space, especially for public buildings, e.g., offices. Prevention of airborne pollutants has emerged as a major challenge. Ventilation strategies can contribute to mitigating the spread of airborne disease in an indoor environment, including increasing supply air rate, modifying ventilation mode, etc. The larger ventilation rate can inevitably lead to high energy consumption, which may be also ineffective in reducing infection risk. As a critical factor affecting the spread of viral contaminant, the potential of ventilation modes for control of COVID-19 should be explored. This study compared several ventilation strategies in the office, including mixing ventilation (MV), zone ventilation (ZV), stratum ventilation (SV) and displacement ventilation (DV), through analyzing ventilation performance and infection risk for the optimal one. By using ANSYS Fluent, the distributions of airflow and pollutant were simulated under various ventilation modes and infected occupants. The SV showed greater performance in mitigating infection disease spread than MV, ZV and DV, with an air distribution performance index (ADPI) of 90.5% and minimum infection risk of 13%. This work can provide a reference for development of ventilation strategies in public space oriented the prevention of COVID-19.

Abstract:Over the past four years, five major variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus have circulated globally, causing seven million deaths. Meanwhile, specific preventative ventilation measures were recommended to minimize exposure to the aerosol infection risk, such as opening doors, and disabling ventilation systems. Given more attention to high-rise buildings, where quite a few outbreaks have been reported, there is a notable lack of reported studies assessing preventive ventilation measures. Therefore, this study focused on practicing several ventilation measures in a 16-story high-rise building located in Montreal, Canada. A variety of inter-zonal tracer measurements, including room-to-floor and inter-floor tests, were carried out considering controlled airflow/pressure across zones. An automated data acquisition system was developed for real-time monitoring of tracer/CO 2 spatial concentrations. Findings show that enabled ventilation with opened doors reduces CO 2 concentrations by up to 82 % in nearby source locations and positively pressurized zones; however, negatively pressurized zones experience a 40 % increase in tracer exposure. With ventilation active, a corridor source leads to a higher risk of tracer exposure (up to 86 %) than the in-room source. Disabled ventilation with closed doors is a recommended ventilation measure, for corridors with infection sources, to minimize tracer transport across zones. Zones with infection sources follow the latter ventilation measure; however, ventilation with open doors offers a conditional ventilation measure if careful airflow is designed particularly at return and exhaust points within the ventilation system. This study has implications for practicing preventative ventilation measures for post-COVID-19 building practices and design considerations.

Abstract:Indoor and Built Environment, Ahead of Print. The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has had a significant impact on human life. Hybrid ventilated hospitals have emerged as multi-zone sites, necessitating ventilation strategies to mitigate viral concentration. This paper integrates multi-zone infiltration and exfiltration (MIX) model of natural ventilation, spatial flow impact factor (SFIF) model and pollutant concentration model to analyze the inter-zonal impact. Results indicate that elevated outdoor temperature corresponds to an increased influence of rooms on corridors. Adopting mechanical ventilation in rooms diminishes the influence of room pollutants on corridors but exerts minimal impact on other rooms. Mechanical air supply reduces the interaction between corridors, and the reduction is most significant when wind direction is the same as stairwell orientation. The corridors do not affect the upstream rooms when the source is in the corridor. When wind speed is below a threshold, mechanical air supply is recommended; for wind speed reaching this threshold, mechanical air exhaust volumes should be adjusted regarding the wind speed. The study reveals that corridor and room window openings exert disparate effects on corridor concentration under mechanical air supply conditions. All the findings offer valuable insights for selecting ventilation strategies in hybrid ventilated hospitals, with the aim of mitigating COVID-19 transmission.

Energy efficient ventilation and indoor air quality in the context of COVID-19 - A systematic review

Abstract:New COVID-19 ventilation guidelines have resulted in higher energy consumption to maintain indoor air quality (IAQ), and energy efficiency has become a secondary concern. Despite the significance of the studies conducted on COVID-19 ventilation requirements, a comprehensive investigation of the associated energy challenges has not been discussed. This study aims to present a critical systematic review of the Coronavirus viral spreading risk mitigation through ventilation systems (VS) and its relation to energy use. COVID-19 heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC)-related countermeasures proposed by industry professionals have been reviewed and their influence on operating VS and energy consumption have also been discussed. A critical review analysis was then conducted on publications from 2020 to 2022. Four research questions (RQs) have been selected for this review concerning i) maturity of the existing literature, ii) building types and occupancy profile, iii) ventilation types and effective control strategies and iv) challenges and related causes. The results reveal that employing HVAC auxiliary equipment is mostly effective and increased fresh air supply is the most significant challenge associated with increased energy consumption due to maintaining IAQ. Future studies should focus on novel approaches toward solving the apparently conflicting objectives of minimizing energy consumption and maximizing IAQ. Also, effective ventilation control strategies should be assessed in various buildings with different occupancy densities. The implications of this study can be useful for future development of this topic not only to enhance the energy efficiency of the VS but also to enable more resiliency and health in buildings.
Nationwide evaluation of energy and indoor air quality predictive control and impact on infection risk for cooling season

Abstract:Since the coronavirus disease 2019, the extended time indoors makes people more concerned about indoor air quality, while the increased ventilation in seeks of reducing infection probability has increased the energy usage from heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems. In this study, to represent the dynamics of indoor temperature and air quality, a coupled grey-box model is developed. The model is identified and validated using a data-driven approach and real-time measured data of a campus office. To manage building energy usage and indoor air quality, a model predictive control strategy is proposed and developed. The simulation study demonstrated 18.92% energy saving while maintaining good indoor air quality at the testing site. Two nationwide simulation studies assessed the overall energy saving potential and the impact on the infection probability of the proposed strategy in different climate zones. The results showed 20%-40% energy saving in general while maintaining a predetermined indoor air quality setpoint. Although the infection risk is increased due to the reduced ventilation rate, it is still less than the suggested threshold (2%) in general. Abstract:The Covid-19 outbreak raised great attention to the importance of indoor air quality in buildings. Even if the Covid-19 epidemic is nearing an end, all stakeholders agree that increasing outside air flow rates is beneficial for decreasing the likelihood of contagion, lowering the risk of future pandemics, and enhancing the general safety of the interior environment. Indeed, diverse concerns raised about whether the ventilation standards in place are still adequate. In this context, this research intends to assess the suitability of current ventilation standards in addressing the current pandemic scenario and to offer novel criteria and guidelines for the design and operation of HVAC systems, as well as useful guidance for the creation of future ventilation standards in a post-Covid-19 scenario. To that end, a comprehensive analysis of the ANSI/ASHRAE 62.1 is carried out, with an emphasis on its effectiveness in reducing the risk of infection. Furthermore, the efficacy of various ventilation strategies in reducing the likelihood of contagion has been investigated. Finally, because building ventilation is inextricably linked to energy consumption, the energy and economic implications of the proposed enhancements have been assessed. To carry out the described analysis, a novel method was developed that combines Building Energy Modelling (BEM) and virus contagion risk assessment. The analyses conducted produced interesting insights and criteria for ventilation system design and operation, as well as recommendations for the development of future standards.

Abstract:Indoor and Built Environment, Ahead of Print. Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) system that is almost indispensable service system of modern buildings is recognized as the most important engineering control measure against pandemics. However, the effectiveness of HVAC systems has been questioned on their ability to control airborne transmission. After the outbreak of COVID-19, China has controlled the spread within a relatively short period. Considering the large population, high population density, busy transportation and the overall underdeveloped economy, China's control measures may have some implications to other countries, especially those with limited resources. This paper intends to provide a systematic summary of Chinese ventilation guidelines issued to cope with COVID-19 transmission. The following three aspects are the main focus of these guidelines: (1) general operation and management schemes of various types of HVAC systems, (2) operation and management schemes of HVAC system in typical types of buildings, and (3) design schemes of HVAC system of makeshift hospitals. In addition, some important differences in HVAC guidelines between China and other countries/institutions are identified and compared, and the possible reasons are discussed. Further discussions are made on the following topics, including the required fresh air supply, the extended operation time, the use of auxiliary equipment, the limited capacity of existing systems, and the use of personalized systems.

Abstract:During the COVID-19 pandemic, an increasing amount of evidence has suggested that the virus can be transmitted through the air inside buildings. The ventilation system used to create the indoor environment would facilitate the transmission of the airborne infectious diseases. However, the existing ventilation systems in most buildings cannot supply sufficient clean outdoor air for diluting the virus concentration. To reduce the airborne infection risk and minimize energy consumption, especially in existing buildings with well-mixed ventilation systems, this investigation used an ultraviolet-C (UV-C) air disinfection device (Rheem's third generation products, RM3) with 99.9% disinfection efficiency to clean air carrying the COVID-19 virus (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, SARS-CoV-2) which could help promote environmental sustainability and create healthy cities. This investigation assessed the impact of the RM3 UV-C units on the infection risk, the number of RM3 UV-C units required, and the strategy for decreasing the infection risk, with the use of computational-fluid-dynamics (CFD) numerical simulations. An actual office building with a combination of individual offices and workstations was selected as an example for the research. According to the numerical results, the best strategy would be to use a combination of 100% outside air and UV-C in heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) ducts with air disinfected by the RM3 UV-C units. The infection risk in the office building could thus be reduced to a negligible level. These findings could provide theoretical basis and engineering application basis for COVID-19 epidemic prevention and control.

Abstract:Abstract The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), a new zoonotic agent that emerged in December 2019, causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This infection can be spread by asymptomatic, presymptomatic, and symptomatic carriers. SARS-CoV-2 spreads primarily via respiratory droplets during close person-to-person contact in a closed space, especially a building. This article summarizes the environmental factors involved in SARS-CoV-2 transmission, including a strategy to prevent SARS-CoV-2 transmission in a building environment. SARS-CoV-2 can persist on surfaces of fomites for at least 3 days depending on the conditions. If SARS-CoV-2 is aerosolized intentionally, it is stable for at least several hours. SARS-CoV-2 is inactivated rapidly on surfaces with sunlight. Close-contact aerosol transmission through smaller aerosolized particles is likely to be combined with respiratory droplets and contact transmission in a confined, crowded, and poorly ventilated indoor environment, as suggested by some cluster cases. Although evidence of the effect of aerosol transmission is limited and uncertainty remains, adequate preventive measures to control indoor environmental quality are required, based on a precautionary approach, because COVID-19 has caused serious global damages to public health, community, and the social economy. The expert panel for COVID-19 in Japan has focused on the “3 Cs,” namely, “closed spaces with poor ventilation,” “crowded spaces with many people,” and “close contact.” In addition, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan has been recommending adequate ventilation in all closed spaces in accordance with the existing standards of the Law for Maintenance of Sanitation in Buildings as one of the initial political actions to prevent the spread of COVID-19. However, specific standards for indoor environmental quality control have not been recommended and many scientific uncertainties remain regarding the infection dynamics and mode of SARS-CoV-2 transmission in closed indoor spaces. Further research and evaluation are required regarding the effect and role of indoor environmental quality control, especially ventilation.

Abstract:The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has led to significant global health emergencies in recent years, prompting widespread recommendations across various regions for opening windows in building codes. However, official guidelines have not adequately addressed the details of window opening arrangements related to the supporting evidence from existing literature. This study investigated the risk of disease outbreaks via respiratory transmission in large university studio classrooms. It examined the effectiveness of window-door opening strategies combined with mechanical ventilation in mitigating the infection risk of respiratory diseases in such spaces. A full-scale school ventilation performance test bed was used to measure indoor airflow and CO 2 distribution patterns. Comparisons were made with the numerical simulation of exhaled viral emissions. A modified Wells-Riley equation was employed to calculate inhalation exposure and disease infection risks at the room level. Measurements showed that fresh air ventilation from the mechanical system was relatively low compared to existing standards, especially in pandemic situations. The results show that opening windows can lead to a decrease to low probabilities (below 5%) of infection risk in 85.02% area of a classroom over an 8-hour period, which demonstrates that window-opening behavior is an effective supplementary strategy for large educational spaces with mechanically ventilated systems during emergencies when active measures are insufficient for diluting diseases. Furthermore, the study reveals that maximizing outdoor air rates by opening all windows may occasionally result in adverse indoor airflow redistribution, increasing virus load from 0.0382 to 0.8926 quanta/m 3 near the virus source locations.

Abstract:<p>In recent years, a large number of respiratory infectious diseases (especially COVID-19) have broken out worldwide. Respiratory infectious viruses may be released in the air, resulting in cross-infection between patients and medical workers. Indoor ventilation systems can be adjusted to affect fine particles containing viruses. This study was aimed at performing a series of experiments to evaluate the ventilation performance and assess the exposure of healthcare workers (HW) to virus-laden particles released by patients in a confined experimental chamber. In a typical ward setting, four categories (top supply and exhaust, side supply and exhaust) were evaluated, encompassing 16 different air distribution patterns. The maximum reduction in the cumulative exposure level for HW was 70.8% in ventilation strategy D (upper diffusers on the sidewall supply and lower diffusers on the same sidewall return). The minimum value of the cumulative exposure level for a patient close to the source of the contamination pertained to Strategy E (upper diffusers on the sidewall supply and lower diffusers on the opposite sidewall return). Lateral ventilation strategies can provide significant guidance for ward operation to minimizing the airborne virus contamination. This study can provide a reference for sustainable buildings to construct a healthy indoor environment.</p>

Abstract:The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has had widespread global effects. The advent of novel variants of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus, along with the spread of diverse airborne viruses across different geographical locations, has caused reflective apprehension on a global scale. This resurgence emphasises the critical importance of carefully constructed structures installed with efficient ventilation systems, including both natural and mechanical ventilation techniques, as well as mixed-mode ventilation approaches in buildings. Building engineering and architectural designs must go beyond traditional considerations of economics and structural durability in order to protect public health and well-being. To attain a high quality of life, it is necessary to prioritise sustainability, energy efficiency, and the provision of safe, high-quality indoor environments. Empirical scientific investigations underscore the pivotal role played by conducive indoor environments in averting the transmission of viral diseases such as COVID-19 and mitigating challenges associated with sick building syndrome, primarily stemming from suboptimal indoor air quality. This work provides a summary and a SWOT (strength, weakness, opportunities, and threat) analysis of strategies designed for engineers, architects, and other experts in the field to implement. These strategies are intended for integration into new constructions and the retrofitting of extant structures. Their overarching objective is the minimisation of viral transmission within indoor spaces, accomplished in an energy-efficient manner consonant with sustainable development objectives. The significance of these strategies lies in their ability to impact changes to national and international building codes and regulations, strengthening infrastructures against probable airborne viral threats. Encompassing both object-centric and subject-centric approaches, these strategies collectively furnish a holistic framework for mitigating the dissemination of pathogens, exemplified by the SARS-CoV-2 virus and similar airborne viruses, across diverse typologies of buildings.

Abstract:The ventilation system plays a key role in maintaining a healthy environment in an enclosed space. To seek a reasonable air distribution method and improve indoor air quality, the air change efficiency, exposure risk and infection risk under heating conditions are explored in a comparative experimental study under ICV, stratum ventilation (SV) and mixing ventilation (MV). The results demonstrate that with the same amount of air (94 l/s) and designed room temperature (22 °C), the air change efficiency of ICV is 9.8 % and 24.3 % higher than SV and MV, indicating the excellent ability to form a clean and healthy breathing layer. During the pandemic, ICV can reduce the infection risk of COVID-19 by 5 % and 22.1 % in four hours relative to SV and MV. Exposure risk distribution research results demonstrate that ICV can maintain a reduction in exposure level of 9.64–44.44 % even at a location farther from the air inlet and provide a safer environment where people sit frequently. The conclusions obtained in this study can provide a new approach for ventilation to address COVID-19 and indoor air quality problems during heating season.

Abstract:The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak has turned the world upside down bringing about a massive impact on society due to enforced measures such as the curtailment of personal travel and limitations on economic activities. The global pandemic resulted in numerous people spending their time at home, working, and learning from home hence exposing them to air contaminants of outdoor and indoor origins. COVID-19 is caused by the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which spreads by airborne transmission. The viruses found indoors are linked to the building's ventilation system quality. The ventilation flow in an indoor environment controls the movement and advection of any aerosols, pollutants, and Carbon Dioxide (CO 2 ) created by indoor sources/occupants; the quantity of CO 2 can be measured by sensors. Indoor CO 2 monitoring is a technique used to track a person's COVID-19 risk, but high or low CO 2 levels do not necessarily mean that the COVID-19 virus is present in the air. CO2 monitors, in short, can help inform an individual whether they are breathing in clean air. In terms of COVID-19 risk mitigation strategies, intelligent indoor monitoring systems use various sensors that are available in the marketplace. This work presents a review of scientific articles that influence intelligent monitoring development and indoor environmental quality management system. The paper underlines that the non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) sensor and ESP8266 microcontroller support the development of low-cost indoor air monitoring at learning facilities.

Abstract:During the post-COVID-19 era, it is important but challenging to synchronously mitigate the infection risk and optimize the energy savings in public buildings. While, ineffective control of ventilation and purification systems can result in increased energy consumption and cross-contamination. This paper is to develop intelligent operation, maintenance, and control systems by coupling intelligent ventilation and air purification systems (negative ion generators). Optimal deployment of sensors is determined by Fuzzy C-mean (FCM), based on which CO2 concentration fields are rapidly predicted by combing the artificial neural network (ANN) and self-adaptive low-dimensional linear model (LLM). Negative oxygen ion and particle concentrations are simulated with different numbers of negative ion generators. Optimal ventilation rates and number of negative ion generators are decided. A visualization platform is established to display the effects of ventilation control, epidemic prevention, and pollutant removal. The rapid prediction error of LLM-based ANN for CO2 concentration was below 10% compared with the simulation. Fast decision reduced CO2 concentration below 1000 ppm, infection risk below 1.5%, and energy consumption by 27.4%. The largest removal efficiency was 81% when number of negative ion generators was 10. This work can promote intelligent operation, maintenance, and control systems considering infection prevention and energy sustainability.

Abstract:Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, an increased risk of airborne transmission has been experienced in buildings, particularly in confined public places. The need for ventilation as a means of infection prevention has become more pronounced given that some basic precautions (like wearing masks) are no longer mandatory. However, ventilating the space as a whole (e.g., using a unified ventilation rate) may lead to situations where there is either insufficient or excessive ventilation in localized areas, potentially resulting in localized virus accumulation or large energy consumption. It is of urgent need to investigate real-time control of ventilation systems based on local demands of the occupants to strike a balance between infection risk and energy saving. In this work, a zonal demand-controlled ventilation (ZDCV) strategy was proposed to optimize the ventilation rates in sub-zones. A camera-based occupant detection method was developed to detect occupants (with eight possible locations in sub-zones denoted as 'A' to 'H'). Linear ventilation model (LVM), dimension reduction, and artificial neural network (ANN) were integrated for rapid prediction of pollutant concentrations in sub-zones with the identified occupants and ventilation rates as inputs. Coordinated ventilation effects between sub-zones were optimized to improve infection prevention and energy savings. Results showed that rapid prediction models achieved an average prediction error of 6 ppm for CO2 concentration fields compared with the simulation under different occupant scenarios (i.e., occupant locations at ABH, ABCFH, and ABCDEFH). ZDCV largely reduced the infection risk to 2.8% while improved energy-saving efficiency by 34% compared with the system using constant ventilation rate. This work can contribute to the development of building environmental control systems in terms of pollutant removal, infection prevention, and energy sustainability.

Abstract:The COVID-19 outbreak has shown the significance of ventilation and air conditioning systems in mitigating the transmission of the virus. Increasing air supply volume and utilizing indoor air purifiers are both effective measures to reduce the risk of infection. However, the specific air volume requirements in primary return air systems considering the impact of air purifiers installed within these systems have not been extensively studied. In this paper, the pathogenic aerosol emission rate was utilized to evaluate inhalation probability, taking into account the air purifier's removal efficiency. The notion of safe duration was additionally introduced as a criterion for quantifying indoor health and safety. A novel ventilation calculation method for different airborne infections to adjust safe duration was also presented. The findings suggested that the safe duration was mostly influenced by human-related factors, specifically occupant density and the effectiveness of facial masks in providing protection. When occupant density exceeded 0.35 people/m 2 , wearing facial masks with a higher protection coefficient was more effective in improving indoor safety and health than reducing occupant density. Moreover, enhancing the filtration efficacy of the air conditioning system's purifier can provide a level of protection comparable to wearing a regular mask.
