Abstract:Abstract Ventilation might play an important role in airborne transmission. By using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method, ventilation modes, ventilation rates, and infection source’s face direction were considered in a multi-person indoor environment (10 m*10 m*3 m). The airflow patterns, virus concentration distribution, and infection probability were studied. The results showed that the virus concentration was lower with displacement ventilation (DV, lower in, upper out) than mixing ventilation (MV, top-centre in, upper out) or natural ventilation (NV, upper in, upper out). In 2 air changes per hour (ACH), the infection risk of susceptible persons in MV and NV might be about 2.43-fold and 1.30-fold more than that in DV. Increased ventilation usually reduces viral concentrations and the risk of infection. For the height of breathing zones, the average virus concentration at 12ACH was 49.78%-78.72% lower than that at 2ACH. For susceptible persons at a distance of about 2.8-4.2 m to a COVID-19 infector with 30 min exposure time, the long-range airborne infection probability might be 11.53% (±5.86) (2ACH), 4.96% (±1.82%) (6ACH), and 2.96% (±1.91%) (12ACH).

Abstract:The effects of ventilation strategies on mitigating airborne virus transmission in a generic indoor space representative of a lobby area or information desk found in a hotel, company, or cruise ship are presented. Multiphase computational fluid dynamics simulations are employed in conjunction with evaporation modeling. Four different ventilation flow rates are examined based on the most updated post-COVID-19 pandemic standards from health organizations and recent findings from research studies. Three air changes per hour provide the best option for minimizing droplet spreading at reasonable energy efficiency. Thus, a higher ventilation rate is not the best solution to avoid spreading airborne diseases. Simultaneous coughing of all occupants revealed that contagious droplets could be trapped in regions of low airflow and on furniture, significantly prolonging their evaporation time. Multiphase flow simulations can help define ventilation standards to reduce droplet spreading and mitigate virus transmission while maintaining adequate ventilation with lower energy consumption. The present work significantly impacts how heat, air-conditioning, and ventilation systems are designed and implemented.

Abstract:Over the past four years, five major variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus have circulated globally, causing seven million deaths. Meanwhile, specific preventative ventilation measures were recommended to minimize exposure to the aerosol infection risk, such as opening doors, and disabling ventilation systems. Given more attention to high-rise buildings, where quite a few outbreaks have been reported, there is a notable lack of reported studies assessing preventive ventilation measures. Therefore, this study focused on practicing several ventilation measures in a 16-story high-rise building located in Montreal, Canada. A variety of inter-zonal tracer measurements, including room-to-floor and inter-floor tests, were carried out considering controlled airflow/pressure across zones. An automated data acquisition system was developed for real-time monitoring of tracer/CO 2 spatial concentrations. Findings show that enabled ventilation with opened doors reduces CO 2 concentrations by up to 82 % in nearby source locations and positively pressurized zones; however, negatively pressurized zones experience a 40 % increase in tracer exposure. With ventilation active, a corridor source leads to a higher risk of tracer exposure (up to 86 %) than the in-room source. Disabled ventilation with closed doors is a recommended ventilation measure, for corridors with infection sources, to minimize tracer transport across zones. Zones with infection sources follow the latter ventilation measure; however, ventilation with open doors offers a conditional ventilation measure if careful airflow is designed particularly at return and exhaust points within the ventilation system. This study has implications for practicing preventative ventilation measures for post-COVID-19 building practices and design considerations.

Abstract:To understand how SARS-CoV-2 spreads indoors, in this study bovine coronavirus was aerosolized as simulant into a plexiglass chamber with coupons of metal, wood and plastic surfaces. After aerosolization, chamber and coupon surfaces were swiped to quantify the virus concentrations using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Bio-layer interferometry showed stronger virus association on plastic and metal surfaces, however, higher dissociation from wood in 80% relative humidity. Virus aerosols were collected with the 100 L/min wetted wall cyclone and the 50 L/min MD8 air sampler and quantitated by qPCR. To monitor the effect of the ventilation on the virus movement, PRD1 bacteriophages as virus simulants were disseminated in a ¾ scale air-conditioned hospital test room with twelve PM2.5 samplers at 15 L/min. Higher virus concentrations were detected above the patient's head and near the foot of the bed with the air inlet on the ceiling above, exhaust bottom left on the wall. Based on room layout, air measurements and bioaerosol collections computational flow models were created to visualize the movement of the virus in the room airflow. The addition of air curtain at the door minimized virus concentration while having the inlet and exhaust on the ceiling decreased overall aerosol concentration. Controlled laboratory experiments were conducted in a plexiglass chamber to gain more insight into the fundamental behavior of aerosolized SARS-CoV-2 and understand its fate and transport in the ambient environment of the hospital room.

Abstract:<p>In recent years, a large number of respiratory infectious diseases (especially COVID-19) have broken out worldwide. Respiratory infectious viruses may be released in the air, resulting in cross-infection between patients and medical workers. Indoor ventilation systems can be adjusted to affect fine particles containing viruses. This study was aimed at performing a series of experiments to evaluate the ventilation performance and assess the exposure of healthcare workers (HW) to virus-laden particles released by patients in a confined experimental chamber. In a typical ward setting, four categories (top supply and exhaust, side supply and exhaust) were evaluated, encompassing 16 different air distribution patterns. The maximum reduction in the cumulative exposure level for HW was 70.8% in ventilation strategy D (upper diffusers on the sidewall supply and lower diffusers on the same sidewall return). The minimum value of the cumulative exposure level for a patient close to the source of the contamination pertained to Strategy E (upper diffusers on the sidewall supply and lower diffusers on the opposite sidewall return). Lateral ventilation strategies can provide significant guidance for ward operation to minimizing the airborne virus contamination. This study can provide a reference for sustainable buildings to construct a healthy indoor environment.</p>

The effect of local ventilation on airborne viral transmission in indoor spaces

Abstract:We incorporate local ventilation effects into a spatially dependent generalisation of the Wells--Riley model of airborne viral transmission. Aerosol production and removal through ventilation (global and local), biological deactivation, and gravitational settling as well as transport around a recirculating air-conditioning flow and turbulent mixing are modelled using an advection--diffusion--reaction equation. The local ventilation effects are compared with the equivalent global ventilation and we find that the streamlines of the airflow provide insight into when the global ventilation model is a good approximation. When the agreement between ventilation models is poor, we find that the global ventilation model generally overestimates the infection risk.

Abstract:BackgroundThe literature includes many studies which individually assess the efficacy of protective measures against the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. This study considers the high infection risk in public buildings and models the quality of the indoor environment, related safety measures, and their efficacy in preventing the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.MethodsSimulations are created that consider protective factors such as hand hygiene, face covering and engagement with Covid-19 vaccination programs in reducing the risk of infection in a university foyer. Furthermore, a computational fluid dynamics model is developed to simulate and analyse the university foyer under three ventilation regimes. The probability of transmission was measured across different scenarios.FindingsEstimates suggest that the Delta variant requires the air change rate to be increased >1000 times compared to the original strain, which is practically not feasible. Consequently, appropriate hygiene practices, such as wearing masks, are essential to reducing secondary infections. A comparison of different protective factors in simulations found the overall burden of infections resulting from indoor contact depends on (i) face mask adherence, (ii) quality of the ventilation system, and (iii) other hygiene practices.InterpretationRelying on ventilation, whether natural, mechanical, or mixed, is not sufficient alone to mitigate the risk of aerosol infections. This is due to the internal configuration of the indoor space in terms of (i) size and number of windows, their location and opening frequency, as well as the position of the air extraction and supply inlets, which often induce hotspots with stagnating air, (ii) the excessive required air change rate. Hence, strict reliance on proper hygiene practices, namely adherence to face coverings and hand sanitising, are essential. Consequently, face mask adherence should be emphasized and promoted by policymakers for public health applications. Similar research may need to be conducted using a similar approach on the Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant.

Abstract:The rapid global spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) at the beginning of 2020 presented the world with its greatest health challenge in decades. It soon became clear that governments were unprepared to respond appropriately to this crisis. National and international public health authorities were confused about the transmission routes of the virus and the control measures required to protect against it. In particular, the need to reduce the risk of infection through sufficient and effective ventilation of indoor spaces was given little attention. In this review, we discuss insights and key lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic regarding the role of ventilation as an effective means against airborne transmission of pathogens and, more broadly, for supporting good indoor air quality.

Energy efficient ventilation and indoor air quality in the context of COVID-19 - A systematic review

Abstract:New COVID-19 ventilation guidelines have resulted in higher energy consumption to maintain indoor air quality (IAQ), and energy efficiency has become a secondary concern. Despite the significance of the studies conducted on COVID-19 ventilation requirements, a comprehensive investigation of the associated energy challenges has not been discussed. This study aims to present a critical systematic review of the Coronavirus viral spreading risk mitigation through ventilation systems (VS) and its relation to energy use. COVID-19 heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC)-related countermeasures proposed by industry professionals have been reviewed and their influence on operating VS and energy consumption have also been discussed. A critical review analysis was then conducted on publications from 2020 to 2022. Four research questions (RQs) have been selected for this review concerning i) maturity of the existing literature, ii) building types and occupancy profile, iii) ventilation types and effective control strategies and iv) challenges and related causes. The results reveal that employing HVAC auxiliary equipment is mostly effective and increased fresh air supply is the most significant challenge associated with increased energy consumption due to maintaining IAQ. Future studies should focus on novel approaches toward solving the apparently conflicting objectives of minimizing energy consumption and maximizing IAQ. Also, effective ventilation control strategies should be assessed in various buildings with different occupancy densities. The implications of this study can be useful for future development of this topic not only to enhance the energy efficiency of the VS but also to enable more resiliency and health in buildings.

Abstract:Currently, (2019-2020) COVID-19 global pandemic is caused by a member of the Coronaviridae group. Some human viruses are spread from human to human by way of droplets or aerosols, but fewer viruses are persistently airborne in transmission, and the healthcare-associated epidemic of airborne viral infection are restricted to very few surrogates. In addition, it is one of the most efficient tools (i.e., the second one) for preventing inside air pollution through ventilation. To our aim was to perform a rapid literature review to answer the following question: does ventilation in healthcare facilities prevention of infection COVID-19? This study is a systematic review by searching among published articles in Embase, PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, PubMed Central (PMC), Google Scholar databases as well as medRxiv by using the following keywords: ‘COVID-19’, ‘healthcare settings’, ‘prevention’, ‘ventilation’, ‘Hospital, ‘Infection’, and ‘Air changes per hour. After investigating the information and quality of articles, 52 articles were included in this study. The literature denotes that temperature, relative humidity, and ventilation and air conditioning systems have beneficial effects to prevent COVID-19 infection. The results of this study demonstrated that many parameters basic strategy of control COVID-19 include: hand hygiene, social distancing, screening and case finding, isolation and separating, decontamination and disinfection, and effective ventilation. Thus, based on recommendations of CDC, WHO, and other studies effective ventilation is the most important transmission of respiratory disease control strategy, specially COVID-19.

Abstract:Indoor and Built Environment, Ahead of Print. The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has had a significant impact on human life. Hybrid ventilated hospitals have emerged as multi-zone sites, necessitating ventilation strategies to mitigate viral concentration. This paper integrates multi-zone infiltration and exfiltration (MIX) model of natural ventilation, spatial flow impact factor (SFIF) model and pollutant concentration model to analyze the inter-zonal impact. Results indicate that elevated outdoor temperature corresponds to an increased influence of rooms on corridors. Adopting mechanical ventilation in rooms diminishes the influence of room pollutants on corridors but exerts minimal impact on other rooms. Mechanical air supply reduces the interaction between corridors, and the reduction is most significant when wind direction is the same as stairwell orientation. The corridors do not affect the upstream rooms when the source is in the corridor. When wind speed is below a threshold, mechanical air supply is recommended; for wind speed reaching this threshold, mechanical air exhaust volumes should be adjusted regarding the wind speed. The study reveals that corridor and room window openings exert disparate effects on corridor concentration under mechanical air supply conditions. All the findings offer valuable insights for selecting ventilation strategies in hybrid ventilated hospitals, with the aim of mitigating COVID-19 transmission.

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic has caused millions of deaths and great economic loss globally. There has been substantial evidence supporting the airborne transmission of SARS-CoV-2. Airborne route has been considered as a major transmission pathway, which can spread the disease over a longer distance and time. The viral loads in the respiratory tract of a virus carrier are typically below 109 RNA copies/mL and are related to the emission rate of pathogens. Most particles expelled during respiratory activities are smaller than 1–2 µm in diameter. Viral aerosols can remain infectious for hours under typical indoor conditions. Sunlight contributes greatly to the viability inactivation of SARS-CoV-2. The outbreaks in different scenarios are reviewed based on existing data. Most outbreaks were related to long-term care facilities, K-12 schools, restaurants, retail facilities, and offices. The Wells-Riley model for estimating the risk of airborne transmission is introduced, along with model parameters such as the quanta generation rate, virus-containing particle size distribution, and inactivation rate. The effectiveness of various IAQ control strategies for mitigating the airborne transmission risk is analyzed, including PPE, ventilation strategies, partitions, air cleaning, and disinfection technologies, and occupancy control strategies. Both benefits and costs should be considered in designing the control strategies.

Abstract:COVID-19 has already claimed over 7 million lives and has infected over 775 million people globally [1]. SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19, spreads primarily through droplets from infected people's airways, rendering Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems critical in controlling infection risk levels in the indoor environment. To understand the dynamics of exhaled droplets and aerosols and the percentage of particles that are inhaled, escaped, recirculated, or trapped on different surfaces for a variety of environmental settings, we have presented our findings from the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling to investigate the impact of changing HVAC parameters in this paper. When combined with the spatial and temporal distribution of droplets, this method can be used to assess the potential risk and strengthen resilience. This finding demonstrates the viability and usefulness of CFD for modeling the distribution and dynamics of droplets and aerosols in confined environments. Our study demonstrates that raising the Air Change per Hour (ACH) from 2 to 8 reduces the risk of particle inhalation by nearly 70 %. Additionally, limiting the amount of air recirculation or increasing the amount of fresh air helps to reduce the number of airborne particles in an indoor space. To reduce the potential for respiratory droplet-related transmission and to provide relevant recommendations to the appropriate authority, the same computational approach could be applied to a wide range of ventilated indoor environments such as public buses, restaurants, exhibitions, and theaters.
Opening windows as a supplementary ventilation strategy for large classrooms in a pandemic situation: field measurements and simulation

Abstract:The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has led to significant global health emergencies in recent years, prompting widespread recommendations across various regions for opening windows in building codes. However, official guidelines have not adequately addressed the details of window opening arrangements related to the supporting evidence from existing literature. This study investigated the risk of disease outbreaks via respiratory transmission in large university studio classrooms. It examined the effectiveness of window-door opening strategies combined with mechanical ventilation in mitigating the infection risk of respiratory diseases in such spaces. A full-scale school ventilation performance test bed was used to measure indoor airflow and CO 2 distribution patterns. Comparisons were made with the numerical simulation of exhaled viral emissions. A modified Wells-Riley equation was employed to calculate inhalation exposure and disease infection risks at the room level. Measurements showed that fresh air ventilation from the mechanical system was relatively low compared to existing standards, especially in pandemic situations. The results show that opening windows can lead to a decrease to low probabilities (below 5%) of infection risk in 85.02% area of a classroom over an 8-hour period, which demonstrates that window-opening behavior is an effective supplementary strategy for large educational spaces with mechanically ventilated systems during emergencies when active measures are insufficient for diluting diseases. Furthermore, the study reveals that maximizing outdoor air rates by opening all windows may occasionally result in adverse indoor airflow redistribution, increasing virus load from 0.0382 to 0.8926 quanta/m 3 near the virus source locations.

Abstract:During the normalization phase of the COVID-19 epidemic, society has gradually reverted to using building space, especially for public buildings, e.g., offices. Prevention of airborne pollutants has emerged as a major challenge. Ventilation strategies can contribute to mitigating the spread of airborne disease in an indoor environment, including increasing supply air rate, modifying ventilation mode, etc. The larger ventilation rate can inevitably lead to high energy consumption, which may be also ineffective in reducing infection risk. As a critical factor affecting the spread of viral contaminant, the potential of ventilation modes for control of COVID-19 should be explored. This study compared several ventilation strategies in the office, including mixing ventilation (MV), zone ventilation (ZV), stratum ventilation (SV) and displacement ventilation (DV), through analyzing ventilation performance and infection risk for the optimal one. By using ANSYS Fluent, the distributions of airflow and pollutant were simulated under various ventilation modes and infected occupants. The SV showed greater performance in mitigating infection disease spread than MV, ZV and DV, with an air distribution performance index (ADPI) of 90.5% and minimum infection risk of 13%. This work can provide a reference for development of ventilation strategies in public space oriented the prevention of COVID-19.

Abstract:Knowledge about the new infectious disease COVID-19, which first spread in the city of Wuhan in China, in December 2019, is based on the evidence retrieved from coronaviruses previously known to humans. The main transmission ways of the new SARS-CoV-2 virus are respiratory droplets and direct and close contact with infected individuals and contaminated surfaces. To date, some scientific publications provide initial evidence that SARS-CoV-2 can be detected in the air, thus assuming a further route of infection, that airborne, although these results are to be considered preliminary and they need careful interpretation. In support of this hypothesis, ventilation systems, aimed to improve indoor air, could represent an easy way to spread and promote the virus infection especially in hospitals and in all health facilities where the presence of infected individuals is potentially high as well as the possibility of infection by air. Indeed, by generating jets of air at different speeds, they can interfere with the mission of respiratory particles and determine an environmental diffusion of the potentially contaminating droplet. Therefore, ventilation systems could provide a potential transmission channel for the viral load able to spread out in indoor air. Nonetheless, good management, technical and operational practices may lead to a low risk of contagion, both in community and health environments.

Abstract:There are important questions surrounding the potential contribution of outdoor and indoor air quality in the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 and perpetuation of COVID-19 epidemic waves. Environmental health may be a critical component of COVID-19 prevention. The public health community and health agencies should consider the evolving evidence in their recommendations and statements, and work to issue occupational guidelines. Evidence coming from the current epidemiological and experimental research is expected to add knowledge about virus diffusion, COVID-19 severity in most polluted areas, inter-personal distance requirements and need for wearing face masks in indoor or outdoor environments. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for maintaining particulate matter concentrations at low levels for multiple health-related reasons, which may also include the spread of SARS-CoV-2. Indoor environments represent even a more crucial challenge to cope with, as it is easier for the SARS-COV2 to spread, remain vital and infect other subjects in closed spaces in the presence of already infected asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic people. The potential merits of preventive measures, such as CO2 monitoring associated with natural or controlled mechanical ventilation and air purification, for schools, indoor public places (restaurants, offices, hotels, museums, theatres/cinemas etc.) and transportations need to be carefully considered. Hospital settings and nursing/retirement homes as well as emergency rooms, infectious diseases divisions and ambulances represent higher risk indoor environments and may require additional monitoring and specific decontamination strategies based on mechanical ventilation or air purification.

Abstract:Natural cross ventilation has become one of the most effective and sustainable strategies to address respiratory pandemics in confined spaces. Air intake through windows, doors and other openings improves the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) of a classroom, decreases the likelihood of respiratory disease transmission when social distancing of about 1.5 m is observed, and is affordable in terms of energy consumption. In this study, a comparison between types of cross ventilation from CO2 concentration, number of people and window and door surfaces of a school in a Mediterranean climate is carried out for 3 different cases of openings. For this purpose, CO2 levels were measured in two similar and annexed classrooms with different window and door openings (0%, 33% y 66%) with 2 loading and unloading sequences. Two types of cross ventilation were analyzed: cross ventilation with window and door in the same direction or direct (CDIR), and diagonal cross ventilation (CDIA), in a time period of 3 h. in December 2022. The results show an interaction between CO2 levels and the type of ventilation. Diagonal cross ventilation was more effective in terms of air renewal (ACH) than direct ventilation, in smaller opening ranges (33%), with direct cross ventilation being more effective globally and in larger opening ranges (66%), under the conditions of this case study. The Cost-effectiveness of Improving Indoor Air Ventilation for the Prevention of Covid-19 in Commercial Spaces

Abstract:Abstract Objective : Airborne infection from aerosolized SARS-CoV-2 poses an economic challenge for the large number of small businesses without existing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Standalone units have been recommended, but are costly and may not achieve adequate air exchange to prevent infection. Study design : Cost-effectiveness analysis with Monte Carlo simulation. Methods : We built a probabilistic decision-analytic model in a Monte Carlo simulation that examines aerosol transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in an indoor space. As a case study, we modeled a poorly ventilated indoor restaurant. We evaluated the cost-effectiveness of improving ventilation rate to 12 air changes per hour (ACH), the equivalent of hospital-grade filtration systems used in emergency departments. Our base-case scenario assumes that the mean year-round prevalence of actively infectious cases in the community surrounding the restaurant is 1%, and that 50% of patrons were fully vaccinated. Our best-case scenario assumes a community prevalence of 0.1% and 70% of patrons vaccinated, and our worst-case scenario assumes a community prevalence of 2% and 0% of patrons vaccinated. We also provide a customizable online tool. Results : All 3 scenarios resulted in a net cost-savings and infections averted. For the base-case scenario, improving ventilation to 12 ACH was associated with 33 (95% Credible Interval [CrI]: 18-50) aerosol infections averted over one year, producing an estimated cost savings of -$97,467 (95% CrI: -$156,760, -$50,877) and 0.84 (95% CrI: 0.46, 1.40) quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) gained. Conclusions : It is cost-effective to improve indoor ventilation in small businesses in older buildings that lack HVAC systems during the pandemic.
