Abstract:A Tm,Ho:LuYO3 crystal was grown using the optical floating zone method. The XRD pattern shows that it belongs to the cubic crystal system (Ia‾3 space group). The absorption cross-section at 796 nm is 3.45 × 10−21 cm2, where the full width at half maximum (FWHM) is 45 nm. The emission cross-section at 2080 nm is approximately 1.33 × 10−20 cm2. The broad fluorescence band extends to 2200 nm where almost no absorption can be observed. The fluorescence lifetime at 2080 nm is 2.08 ms. The up-conversion fluorescence spectrum and lifetime were also studied. All the results suggest that the Tm,Ho:LuYO3 crystal is a potential tunable and ultra-short laser media operated at ~2.1 μm.

Abstract:Ho3+-doped CaY0.9Gd0.1AlO4 single crystal was successfully grown by the Czochralski technique for the first time. The polarized absorption spectra, polarized luminescence spectra and fluorescence decay curve of the crystal were investigated at room temperature. The spectroscopic parameters are calculated based on Judd–Ofelt theory, the values of Ω2,4,6 were calculated to be 3.16 × 10−20 cm2, 3.93 × 10−20 cm2, 0.91 × 10−20 cm2, respectively. The Ho:CaY0.9Gd0.1AlO4 crystal exhibits strong emission at 2013 nm for π- and 2032 nm for σ-polarizations with stimulated emission cross section of 6.64 × 10−20 cm2 and 1.90 × 10−20 cm2, respectively. The fluorescence lifetime of the 5I7 level was measured to be 6.60 ms. The continuous-wave (CW) laser operation of Ho:CaY0.9Gd0.1AlO4 crystal around 2 μm was demonstrated.

Abstract:30mol% Ho:BaY2F8 (Ho:BYF) and 30mol% Ho, 20mol% Lu:BaY2F8 (Ho:BYLF) crystals with monoclinic phase were prepared by the Bridgman technique. After introducing Lu3+ ions, the thermal property of Ho:BYLF crystal was improved without significantly shortening the I-5(5) level lifetime of Ho3+ ion compared with Ho:BYF crystal. Under laser diode pumping at 889 nm, the emission peaks of both Ho:BYF and Ho:BYLF crystals in the range of 3-5 mu m could be detected. The spectral parameters of the crystal are calculated in detail, and the cross sections of absorption, emission and gain are given. During laser pumping, the two crystals showed low pumping threshold, and Ho:BYF crystal obtained a maximum energy output of 5.22 mJ, while Ho:BYLF crystal tended to be saturated at 1 mJ due to the high concentration of Lu3+ ion. These two crystals show great application potential for laser operating in the mid-infrared range.
Spectroscopy and 3.01 μm laser performance of Ho:YAP oxide crystal pumped by 1150 nm Raman laser

Abstract:We demonstrate the spectroscopy and mid-infrared laser performance on the Ho:YAP oxide crystal grown by the Czochralski method in detail. The crystal belongs to orthorhombic system of Pnmb (62) space group and shows high crystalline quality. The lifetimes of 5 I 6 and 5 I 7 levels are 0.412 and 4.485 ms, respectively. Particularly, under 1150 nm Raman fiber laser pumping, a 3.01 μm CW laser with a maximum power of 181 mW and slope-efficiency of 3.35% is achieved. The M 2 factor of 1.35/1.37 indicates that the yield laser has excellent beam quality. The results reveal that the Ho:YAP crystal possesses great potential for developing efficient 3.0 μm mid-infrared lasers.

Abstract:We report on the first, to our knowledge, room-temperature continuous-wave laser operation of Tm3+,Ho3+-codoped barium and strontium fluoride crystals at ∼2.1 µm. The 3 at.% Tm, 0.5 at.% Ho:BaF2 laser generated 160 mW at 2073 nm with a slope efficiency of 31.0% and a laser threshold of 43 mW. The continuous wavelength tuning of this laser from 2010 to 2090 nm (tuning range, 80 nm) was demonstrated. The spectroscopic properties of Tm,Ho:SrF2 and Tm,Ho:BaF2 crystals were also determined, showing enhanced Tm3+ → Ho3+ energy transfer in rare-earth clusters. For Ho3+ ions in BaF2, the stimulated-emission cross section is 0.40 × 10-20 cm2 at 2044 nm, and the thermal equilibrium luminescence lifetime is as long as 14.1 ms.
Intense 2.8 μm emission of Ho³⁺ doped PbF₂ single crystal

Abstract:A Ho³⁺-doped PbF₂ mid-IR laser crystal was successfully grown using the vertical Bridgman method. An intense 2.8 μm emission in Ho:PbF₂ crystal was observed for the first time. By analyzing the absorption and emission measurements of the Ho:PbF₂ crystal with the Judd-Ofelt theory, the intensity parameters Ω(2,4,6), exited state lifetimes, branching ratios, and emission cross-sections were calculated. It is found that the Ho:PbF₂ crystal has high fluorescence branching ratio (20.99%), large emission cross section (1.44×10⁻²⁰ cm²), long fluorescence lifetime (5.4 ms), and high quantum efficiency (88.4%) corresponding to the stimulated emission of Ho³⁺: ⁵I₆→⁵I₇ transition. The structure of Ho:PbF₂ crystal was also analyzed by the Raman spectrum, and it was found that the Ho:PbF₂ crystal possesses low phonon energy of 257 cm⁻¹. We propose that the Ho:PbF₂ crystal may be a promising material for 2.8 μm laser applications.

Abstract:High quality Yb and Ho co-doped Y(3)A1(5)0(12) single crystal fibers have been successfully grown by the laser heated pedestal growth method of up to 124 mm in length and 450 mu m in diameter for the first time. The results of inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry analysis, X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy reveal that the lattice structure and doping concentrations of the SCF are the same as that of the bulk. Scanning electron microscopy microphotographs shows that the fibers only have minor diameter fluctuations within 0.5%. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this research, 1 at.% Ho3+, x at.% Yb3+: NaY0.1Gd0.9(WO4)2 (x = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10) crystals were successfully prepared by Czochralski method. The XRD results demonstrated that the tetragonal structure of NaY0.1Gd0.9(WO4)2 cannot be changed by doping Ho3+ and Yb3+ ions. According to the absorption spectrum, emission spectrum and decay curve of the crystals, the J-O intensity parameter and emission cross-section can be obtained. These results showed that the as-prepared Ho3+, Yb3+: NaY0.1Gd0.9(WO4)2 crystal was suitable as candidates for 2.0 μm near-infrared laser gain material.

Abstract:Tm,Ho:GdScO3 single crystal was grown by the Czochralski method. Its quality and effective segregation coefficient of crystal were characterized, and spectral properties of crystal (1 0 0) plane were studied. The absorption cross-section of Tm,Ho:GdScO3 at 793 nm is 1.61 x 10(-20) cm(2) and emission cross-section at 2020 nm is 1.39 x 10(-20) cm(2). The laser performance of the crystal by 793 nm LD end-pumped was investigated. The maximum output power of 240 mW was obtained with a slope efficiency of 9.1 % in CW(continuous wave) pump mode. In pulse mode, the maximum average output power of 507 mW was achieved. The maximum slope efficiency of 13.7 % was obtained with 100 Hz and 400 mu s. The laser wavelength was 2096 nm. The beam quality factors M-x(2)/M-y(2) were fitted to be 1.81/1.80. These results indicate that Tm,Ho:GdScO3 crystal is a promising candidate medium for near-infrared laser application.

Abstract:A novel mid-infrared Ho:Lu0.1Y0.9AlO3 laser crystal with a size of Φ26 mm × 80 mm was grown successfully by the Czochralski method. The crystal structure was characterized in detail by powder and single-crystal X-ray diffractions: Pnma (62) space group, a = 5.3234 Å, b = 7.3517 Å, c = 5.1670 Å, V = 202.22 Å3, and Z = 1. The X-ray rocking curves show that the crystal possesses high crystalline quality. It was observed by a transmission electron microscope that all atoms are neatly arranged and all elements are uniformly distributed. Meanwhile, the refractive index curves from 400 to 3000 nm at three crystalline axes and Mohs hardness were also achieved. The thermal expansion coefficient is 4.382 × 10–6 K–1, and thermal conductivity is 5.872 W·m–1·K–1. Particularly, the maximum phonon energy is only 552 cm–1, as exhibited by the Raman spectrum. Finally, the transmission, fluorescence spectra, and level lifetimes were measured and compared, which provided a basis for subsequent spectral theoretical analysis and laser experiment.

Abstract:High quality Tm3+∶GGG,Yb3+/ Tm3+∶GGG,Cr3+/ Tm3+∶GGG,Tm3+/Ho3+∶GGG and Cr3+/Tm3+/Ho3+∶GGG crystals with the largest size 25 mm×(30-40) mm have been grown by Czochralski method.The absorption spectra,fluorescence spectra as well as fluorescence decay curves of all these crystals were measured at room temperature.The spectral properties were discussed,and Judd-Ofelt theory was used on some crystals to obtain intensity parameters and other important spectral parameters.The emission cross-sections,quantum efficiency of the transitions corresponding to ~2.0 μm wavelength were calculated.The results show that the codopant Yb3+ and Cr3+ made the absorption of Tm∶GGG crystal in the bands with peaks near 980 nm and near 451 nm,628 nm much stronger,which are suitable for pump by LD and Xenon lamp effectively.In the Tm3+ activated crystals,e.g.Tm3+∶GGG,Yb3+/Tm3+∶GGG,Cr3+/Tm3+∶GGG crystals,the strongest emission locates at ~2.0 μm;while in the Ho3+ activated crystals,e.g.Tm3+/Ho3+∶GGG,Cr3+/Tm3+/Ho3+∶GGG crystals,the strongest emission locates at ~2.08 μm.Laser characteristics of Cr3+/Tm3+/Ho3+∶Gd3Ga5O12 crystal with size 5 mm×45 mm were measured using the Xenon flash-lamp as the pumping source and 170 mW laser output was achieved within the range of 2.086-2.102 μm.

Abstract:We report on a new Yb3+/Tm3+/Ho3+ co-doped bismuth silicate glass: SiO2-Bi2O3-R2O (R = Li, Na, K) for 2 mu m fiber lasers. Bi2O3 was introduced into alkali silicate glass to optimize 2 mu m emission properties. Physical, chemical and spectroscopic properties of Yb3+/Tm3+/Ho3+ co-doped SiO2-Bi2O3-R2O (SBR) glass were presented. The Yb3+/Tm3+/Ho3+ co-doped SBR glass shows excellent thermal stability (Delta T= 162 degrees C), an intense 2.0 mu m emission pumped by 980 nm LD with a lifetime of 1.33 ms and width of 168 nm, large maximum emission cross section of Ho3+ (5.3 x 10(-21) cm(2)), thus large sigma(em)tau product (7.049 x 10(-24) cm(2) s), which suggest its application in 2 mu m fiber lasers. Abstract:An efficient Ho:SrF2 single-crystal fiber (SCF), lightly Ho-doped to a concentration of 0.5 at%, was successfully grown using the temperature gradient technique, and its laser characteristics were studied. Several optical parameters of the Ho:SrF2 SCF were determined using the Judd-Ofelt (J-O) theory, including the J-O intensity parameters, radiative lifetimes, and fluorescence branching ratios. In addition, the continuous-wave (CW), tunable, and passive Q-switched (PQS) laser operations of Ho:SrF2 SCF pumped by a thulium-doped fiber laser were demonstrated in this study. While the CW laser was operating, average output power greater than 1 W and a continuous tuning range of 62 nm were obtained. For the PQS operation, a minimum pulse duration of 779 ns with a repetition rate of 36.27 kHz was achieved using silver nanorods as saturable absorbers. These results indicate that the Ho:SrF2 SCF has potential application in tunable or ultrafast laser at 2.1 µm.

Abstract:Ho,Pr:CaF 2 single crystals were grown by modified temperature gradient technique method (TGT). A systematic study on the fluorescence characteristics around 2.9 μm has been carried out on this kind of materials for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. After co-doping with Pr 3+ , the population inversion is much easier to realize and the ratio of populations between the upper and lower energy levels is highest among the reported materials, which shows the Ho,Pr co-doped CaF 2 is a kind of promising materials. The continuous-wavelength (CW) laser operation has been achieved with the maximum output power of 154 mW on 1%Ho,0.1%Pr:CaF 2 crystals. It's the first report about the CW laser output on Ho-doped CaF 2 single crystals.

Abstract:The 5%(in mole) Pr3+:KYb(WO4)2(Pr:KYbW) self-activated laser crystal was grown by the Kyropoulos method using K2W2O7 as a flux.The grown crystal was Pr:KYbW crystal,which belongs to the monoclinic system.The lattice parameters obtained by X-ray diffraction analysis were a = 1.065 nm,b = 1.031 nm,c = 0.753 nm,and β = 130.65°.There was the structure of WO6 and YbO8 distortion polyhedra in KYb(WO4)2 crystal,and verify the existence of crystal tungsten oxygen bridge bond.It was indicated that the maximum absorption peaks of Yb3+ were located at 945 and 975 nm,which was corresponding to the transition between the lowest level 2F7/2→2F5/2 of Yb3+.The upconversion blue light of 481 nm was corresponding to the transition between the 3P0→3H4 of Pr3+,and the upconversion red light of 645 nm,was corresponding to the transition between the 3P0→3F2 of Pr3+.

Abstract:Tm3+-doped CaY0.9Lu0.1AlO4 single crystal was successfully grown by the Czochralski method. The crystal structure, polarized absorption spectra and polarized emission spectra of Tm:CaY0.9Lu0.1AlO4 crystals were investigated. By using the Judd–Ofelt approach, the intensity parameters Ω2,4,6, spontaneous transition rate, branching ratios and radiative lifetimes were calculated. Diode-end-pumped continuous-wave Tm:CaY0.9Lu0.1AlO4 lasers have also been investigated by establishing a simple and compact plane-concave cavity with four differently coated output couplers. Four different lasing wavelengths at about 2029 nm, 2000 nm, 1966 nm and 1888 nm have been achieved with maximum output power and slope efficiency of (1.98 W, 15.1%), (5.89 W, 46.2%), (6.92 W, 54.9%) and (5.54 W, 44.7%), respectively. The results in regard to the broad emission spectra and good laser performance show that the Tm:CaY0.9Lu0.1AlO4 mixed crystal could be very promising for broadband tunable and/or femtosecond ultrafast laser generation in the important 2-μm spectral region.

Abstract:A novel Yb,Ho,Pr:LuYAG laser crystal was successfully grown and investigated in detail, which belongs to the cubic system with a space group of Ia-3d. The X-ray rocking curve of the as-grown crystal implied high crystalline quality. The dislocation defects were revealed by the chemical method. Moreover, the density, thermal expansion coefficient and thermal conductivity were determined. The absorption coefficient at 935 nm and the emission cross-section at 2.911 μm were obtained to be about 15.18 cm−1 and 2.23 × 10−21 cm2, respectively. The lifetime of the lower laser level 5I7 was shown to decrease from 7.58 to 5.88 ms, while that of the upper laser level 5I6 basically remained unchanged, suggesting that the co-doped Pr3+ possessed an efficient deactivation effect and was beneficial in attaining population inversions of Ho3+. The corresponding findings illustrate that the Yb,Ho,Pr:LuYAG crystal can serve as a novel promising gain medium for realizing the 2.911 μm laser pumped by the high-power InGaAs laser diode.

Abstract:In this paper, we have grown a large NaSr3Be3B3O9F4 (NSBBF) crystal with a top-seeded solution method and generated a continuous-wave (cw) laser radiation at 266 nm with a Brewster-cut NSBBF. With a high-power cw 532 nm and a frequency doubling stage, up to 120 mW cw UV laser was generated at 266 nm. A high stability at 50 mW was obtained more than 10 h. This cw UV laser source is applicable for self-calibrating solar irradiators.

Abstract:In order to explore and develop new crystal materials in the 2.7—3 μm band, Pr, Yb, Ho:GdScO 3 crystal are successfully grown by the Czochralski method for the first time. X-ray diffraction measurement is performed to obtain powder diffraction data. Raman spectra aree measured and the vibration peaks are identified. The transmission spectrum, emission spectrum and fluorescence lifetime of Pr, Yb, Ho: GdScO 3 crystal are also characterized. The center of the strongest absorption band is at 966 nm with a half-peak width of 90 nm, which comes from the transition of Yb 3+ : 2 F 7/2 → 2 F 5/2 . The absorption cross section of Yb 3+ is calculated and the values at 966, 973, 985 nm are 0.62×10 –20 , 0.60×10 –20 and 0.58×10 –20 cm 2 respectively. The maximum emission peak is at 2850 nm and the half-peak width is 70 nm, the lifetimes of Ho 3+ : 5 I 6 and 5 I 7 are measured to be 1094 μs and 56 μs respectively, and the emission cross section at 2850 and 2935 nm are calculated to be 3.6×10 –20 cm 2 and 1.21×10 –20 cm 2 , respectively. Comparing with Yb, Ho: GdScO 3 crystal, the absorption peak of Yb 3+ and the emission peak are both broadened, which are related to the increase of crystal disorder. The lifetime of the lower energy level decreases significantly. Furthermore, the energy transfer mechanism between Ho 3+ and Pr 3+ is analyzed, and the energy transfer efficiency between Ho 3+ : 5 I 7 and Pr 3+ : 3 F 2 + 3 H 6 is calculated to be 99%, which is higher than those in other materials. All the results show that Pr, Yb, Ho:GdScO 3 crystal is an excellent 2.7–3 μm laser material, and is easier to achieve laser output than Yb, Ho:GdScO 3 crystal.

Abstract:Mid-infrared waveband lasers have demonstrated important applications in the fields of atmosphere pollution monitoring, gas flow monitoring, ocean detection, laser medicine, military confrontation and basic scientific researches etc. In this paper, we review the research development of bulk crystal growth, physicochemical, spectral and laser properties of 2.5–5.0 μm waveband mid-infrared laser crystals in recent years. A serial of gallate and aluminate crystals with low phonon energy were grown by the Czochralski method, such as Er3+ activated and rare earth ions co-doped Gd3Ga5O12(GGG), SrGdGa3O7, SrLaGa3O7, CaYAlO4 and CaGdAlO4 crystals, Ho3+ activated and rare earth ions co-doped GGG crystals, as well as Dy3+:YAlO3 crystals, and 2.5–3.4 μm waveband emissions were obtained in these crystals. High quality Dy3+:KPb2Cl5, Cr2+:CdSe and Cr2+:Fe2+:CdSe crystals were grown by the Bridgman method, and 2.5–5.0 μm waveband emissions were obtained in these crystals. The physicochemical and spectral properties of the above crystals were studied systematically, with focus on analyses of the concentration effect of activated ions Er3+, the sensitization mechanism of the co-dopant sensitized ions and the impact of the depopulated ions on the inhibition of self-termination effect. The fluorescence dynamic of the activated ions within the mid-infrared waveband, the energy transfer efficiencies between activated ions and co-dopant sensitization ions, as well as between the activated ions and co-dopant depopulation ions were calculated, and the energy transfer mechanism was discussed. Based on the results of spectroscopic investigations, the concentrations of Er3+, the types and the concentrations the co-dopant sensitization ions were optimized in different kinds of crystals. The laser properties of Er3+ activated GGG, CaYAlO4 crystals were presented. Finally, 2.7–2.8 µm multi-wavelength CW or pulsed lasers were achieved in Er:GGG, Er,Pr:GGG and Er:GGG/GGG composite crystals end-pumped by 965 nm LD or in Cr,Er:YSGG crystals by Xenon lamp, furthermore, the single longitudinal mode microchip laser was achieved in Er:GGG crystal for the first time.
