Abstract:Carbon quantum dots are the materials of a new era with astonishing properties such as high photoluminescence, chemical tuneability and high biocompatibility. Since their discovery, carbon quantum dots have been described as nanometric high-fluorescent carbon nanoparticles, but this definition has become weaker year after year. Nowadays, the classification and the physical explanation of carbon quantum dots optical properties and their chemical structure remain matter of debate. In this review, we provide a clear discussion on these points, providing a starting point for the rationalization of their classification and a comprehensive view on the optical and chemical features of carbon quantum dots.

Abstract:The advance of materials chemistry has influenced significantly the lifestyle of mankind. By virtue of their fascinating physicochemical nature – including ultrasmall size (<10 nm), rich functional groups, fluorescence, chemical stability, biocompatibility, and nontoxicity – carbon dots have been acclaimed as another epoch-making carbon-based nanomaterial following on from fullerene, nanotubes, and graphene. However, the field of carbon dot-based materials chemistry remains incomplete because of their wide structural diversity, meaning that much fundamental knowledge still needs to be uncovered. Herein, this review proposed several novel viewpoints in term of carbon dot-based material chemistry, including the development history, classification, design principle and applications of carbon dots-based materials. Finally, several sound prospects in this fascinating filed are also given.

Herein, we focused on the development of CQDs synthesized by advanced molecular fusion technology. Meanwhile, the applications of CQDs on various target cell imaging were also demonstrated. Abstract:Carbon quantum dots are a novel form of carbon material. They offer numerous benefits including particle size adjustability, light resistance, ease of functionalization, low toxicity, excellent biocompatibility, and high-water solubility, as well as their easy accessibility of raw materials. Carbon quantum dots have been widely used in various fields. The preparation methods employed are predominantly top-down methods such as arc discharge, laser ablation, electrochemical and chemical oxidation, as well as bottom-up methods such as templates, microwave, and hydrothermal techniques. This article provides an overview of the properties, preparation methods, raw materials for preparation, and the heteroatom doping of carbon quantum dots, and it summarizes the applications in related fields, such as optoelectronics, bioimaging, drug delivery, cancer therapy, sensors, and environmental remediation. Finally, currently encountered issues of carbon quantum dots are presented. The latest research progress in synthesis and application, as well as the challenges outlined in this review, can help and encourage future research on carbon quantum dots.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) are a vibrant subset of luminescent nanomaterials exhibiting structural and physicochemical properties that make them an ideal platform for the development of biological imaging agents, optoelectronic devices, and energy conversion/storage devices. In recent years, research relating to CDs has grown exponentially, although not without controversy relating to the structure of CDs and structure–property relationships. Many historical misconceptions about CDs are slowly being resolved by approaching the synthesis and characterization of CDs with appropriate scientific rigor. This review highlights the recent advances in the synthesis and applications of CDs, paying particular attention to the association between CD structure, properties, and usage, while highlighting important new trends in CD research.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs), which are emerging as a novel class of carbon-based functional nanomaterials, can be fabricated from various carbon-based materials such as graphite, activated carbon, carbon nanotubes and many other organic materials. Recently, researchers have paid attention to emerging CDs and investigated their application prospects in a variety of fields, including optical, energy and biomedical technologies. In this review, we provide an up-to-date account of the design, preparation, fundamentals and applications of functional CDs. We begin with an overview on the synthetic methods of novel CDs, including "bottom-up" and "top-down" approaches, post-synthetic modification and functionalisation, through which the diverse properties of CDs such as optical, dispersibility and biocompatibility properties are introduced. We then showcase the applications of advanced CDs in different fields, including optical applications (data security, sensors, light-emitting diodes, and chiral), energy applications (photocatalysts, solar photovoltaics, supercapacitors, and lithium-ion batteries) and promising biomedical applications (bioimaging and nanomedicine). We discuss the fundamental design ideas of such emerging and unique CDs, introduce their synthetic strategies and emphasise their significant applications. This review is expected to provide significant impetus towards the rapid expansion of this new materials field which is rooted in materials chemistry. The fields covered include physics, chemistry, biology, nanotechnology, energy, polymers, device engineering and other interdisciplinary areas.

Abstract:Emerging as a potent alternative to classical metal-based semiconductor quantum dots (Qdots), carbon dots (Cdots) possess the distinctive advantages of convenient synthesis, prominent biocompatibility, colorful photoluminescence, and low cost. After almost a decade of extensive studies since their discovery, Cdots have widely been applied in bioimaging, sensing, catalysis, optoelectronics, energy conversion, etc. In this review, we first highlight the synthetic methods for Cdots in a macroscale manner. Second, we briefly discuss the fundamental mechanisms underlying the photoluminescence (PL). Third, we focus on their applications in sensing and bioimaging (including imaging-guided therapy). Some thoughts on future developments of Cdots are demonstrated as concluding remarks.

Abstract:Abstract Rates of uptake and loss of tritiated water (HTO) were measured in grass vegetation in the field after the plants had been exposed to an atmosphere containing HTO. Uptake of HTO from the atmosphere by leaves required 66 min to achieve 50% equilibrium activity while stems required 1970 min. Loss of HTO from leaves and stems during daylight however took place at rapid and comparable rates. The half time for loss in stems was 25 min while in leaves it was 35 min. Delabeling of contaminated leaves and stems in darkness took place at much reduced rates. The half time for delabeling of leaves in the dark was 400 min while for stems it was 2180 min. Rapid labeling and delabeling of plant tissue after exposure from the atmosphere takes place through leaf stomata and by direct transfer through the epidermis. Loss of HTO from plants is primarily dependent on transpiration. In the event of accidental HTO release to the atmosphere near the ground rapid contamination of vegetation could be expected, When the atmospheric source is dissipated, rapid decontamination could also be expected during periods of normal plant transpiration but not at night or other times when transpiration flow is not taking place.

Abstract:As a new type of nanomaterial, carbon dots (CDs) have been recognized as a versatile nanoplatform with enormous potential for biomedical and optoelectronic applications because of low cytotoxicity, photostability, biocompatibility and versatility in addition to their tunable photoluminescence. In this review, we aim at updating the latest research on preparation, optoelectronic and chemical properties of CDs as well as their biomedical and optoelectronic applications. We highlight the applications of CDs for stem cell imaging, cell nucleus imaging, two‐photon fluorescence imaging, tumor diagnosis and therapy and their optoelectronic applications including light‐emitting diodes (LEDs), solar cells and electrocatalysis. Furthermore, we also discuss current challenges and breakthroughs on machine‐learning‐driven synthesis of CDs as well as nucleic acid detection with an eye towards the future. Finally, we hope that this review will give further impulses to target‐oriented research on CDs for biomedical and optoelectronic applications.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Although there is significant progress in the research of carbon dots (CDs), some challenges such as difficulty in large-scale synthesis, complicated purification, low quantum yield, ambiguity in structure-property correlation, electronic structures, and photophysics are still major obstacles that hinder the commercial use of CDs. Recent advances in synthesis, modification, characterization, and applications of CDs are summarized in this review. We illustrate some examples to correlate process parameters, structures, compositions, properties, and performances of CDs-based materials. The advances in the synthesis approach, purification methods, and modification/doping methods for the synthesis of CDs are also presented. Moreover, some examples of the kilogram-scale fabrication of CDs are given. The properties and performance of CDs can be tuned by some synthesis parameters, such as the incubation time and precursor ratio, the laser pulse width, and the average molar mass of the polymeric precursor. Surface passivation also has a significant influence on the particle sizes of CDs. Moreover, some factors affect the properties and performance of CDs, such as the polarity-sensitive fluorescence effect and concentration-dependent multicolor luminescence, together with the size and surface states of CDs. The synchrotron near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) test has been proved to be a useful tool to explore the correlation among structural features, photophysics, and emission performance of CDs. Recent advances of CDs in bioimaging, sensing, therapy, energy, fertilizer, separation, security authentication, food packing, flame retardant, and co-catalyst for environmental remediation applications were reviewed in this article. Furthermore, the roles of CDs, doped CDs, and their composites in these applications were also demonstrated.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDots), an emerging class of photoluminescent materials, exhibit excellent optical, electrical and chemical properties with many potential applications. Hetero-atom doping in CDots represents a robust and versatile technique to further improve the chemical composition and structure properties of CDots. In this review, we provide an updated roadmap of the hetero-atom-doped CDots. Various up-to-date synthetic strategies, starting with different raw materials to synthetic methods to doping elements, are surveyed. Furthermore, the catalysis, optical properties, biological properties and the potential applications of hetero-atom doped CDots, including nano-probes, optoelectronic devices, catalysis, and biomedicine are also reviewed. We further provide an outlook towards future developments of the hetero-atom-doped CDots. This review will provide a summary of the latest progress of hetero-atom-doped CDots and is expected to inspire further developments in this exciting class of materials.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs), comprising crystalline graphitized carbon cores and polymer surface groups, are currently attracting a lot of interest in biological fields owing to their fluorescent properties, high photostability, biocompatibility and low toxicity. In addition, the easy preparation and functionalization of CDs stimulate the development of CDs‐based composite materials with specific functions. Presently, the biological applications of CDs are growing at a remarkable speed, justifying the need for up‐to‐date review articles that capture recent progress in this blossoming field. In this review, breakthroughs in the synthesis, modification, optical properties, toxicology and biocatalytic platforms of CDs are described. Further, recent research related to bioimaging, biosensing, drug delivery, antibacterial, anticancer (photothermal therapy, photodynamic therapy and synergistic therapy) and antiviral therapies involving CDs are discussed in detail. Finally, a perspective on the prospects and challenges of CDs in the fields of biomedicine and biotechnology is provided. The development and application of new functional nanomaterials have always been the focus of various research fields. Among them, carbon dots (CDs) are the newest member of the carbon‐based nanomaterials, which has aroused great interest in bioapplications due to its extraordinary optical and biological properties. Therefore, it is important to make a comprehensive summary of its wide bioapplication values.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) exhibit great potential in medicinal chemistry due to its excellent optical properties, biocompatibility and scalability, which have attracted significant interest. Based on their specific synthesis and modification, this review provided an overview of the evolution of the synthesis of CDs and reviewed the discovery and development of their optical properties. This review examines recent advances of CDs in medicinal chemistry, with a particular focus on the use of CDs as drugs and carriers for photodynamic and photothermal therapies in the field of neurological disorders, cancer, bacterial, viral, and further in combination with imaging for diagnostic and therapeutic integration. Finally, this review addresses the challenges and limitations of CDs in medicinal chemistry. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the development process of CDs and their applications in various aspects of medicinal chemistry, thereby offers insights to the development of CDs in the field of medicinal chemistry.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDots) are characterized by their optical properties including strong absorptions and bright and colorful fluorescence emissions in the visible spectrum and by their photoinduced redox characteristics as both potent electron acceptors and donors. The reported study was for a systematic comparison of CDots from different synthetic approaches based on the use of pre-existing small carbon nanoparticles sourced from pure carbon soot versus the formation of similar nanoparticles in situ via a one-pot thermal carbonization of organic molecular precursors, emphasizing spectroscopic characterizations over the visible spectrum. The results show that the CDots prepared by the latter under sufficiently robust processing conditions are generally no different from those from the former in terms of the observed optical properties and associated photoinduced redox characteristics in the application-wise more meaningful visible spectral region, suggesting a high stability or general applicability of the definition on CDots as surface-passivated small-carbon nanoparticles. Implications of the reported findings to the further understanding and mechanistic explorations of CDots, including the necessity to focus on the core carbon nanoparticles in CDots in such explorations, are highlighted and discussed.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) are a new type of carbon nanomaterial that have unique physical and chemical properties, good biocompatibility, low toxicity, and easy surface functionalization, making them widely used in biological imaging, environmental monitoring, chemical analysis, targeted drug delivery, disease diagnosis, therapy, etc. In this review, our content is mainly divided into four parts. In the first part, we focused on the preparation methods of CDs, including arc discharge, laser ablation, electrochemical oxidation, chemical oxidation, combustion, hydrothermal/solvent thermal, microwave, template, method etc. Next, we summarized methods of CD modification, including heteroatom doping and surface functionalization. Then, we discussed the optical properties of CDs (ultraviolet absorption, photoluminescence, up-conversion fluorescence, etc.). Lastly, we reviewed the common applications of CDs in biomedicine from the aspects of in vivo and in vitro imaging, sensors, drug delivery, cancer theranostics, etc. Furthermore, we also discussed the existing problems and the future development direction of CDs.
