Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs), novel luminescent zero-dimensional carbon nanomaterials, have been widely applied due to their low toxicity, optimal optical properties, and easy modification. However, the current controllable equipment and mechanism explanation of CDs are relatively vague and require urgent resolution. Full-color emission CDs, an essential CDs category, have attracted people's attention given their light and color-tunable properties. In addition to a wider range of biological and optoelectronic device applications, full-color emission CDs have similar structures and significantly affected the fluorescence mechanism of CDs. At present, few studies have reported on the research of CDs emitted by its full color, which greatly limits the development of CDs mechanisms and applications. As such, the present review detailed the full-color CDs development status, to which a suitable method for preparing full-color CDs was presented and the existing fluorescence emission mechanism of full-color CDs was summarized. Herein, we comprehensively introduced full-color CDs applications in biology and optoelectronics. Finally, we made an outlook on the development and potential applications of full-color CDs. The present review aims to contribute novel insights and methods for understanding full-color CDs.

Modulation of the photoluminescence in carbon dots through surface modification: from mechanism to white light-emitting diodes

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) have emerged as a new type of fluorescent material because of their unique optical advantages, such as high photoluminescence quantum yields (QYs), excellent photo-stability, excitation-dependent emissions, and low toxicity. However, the photoluminescence mechanism for CDs remains unclear, which limits their further practical application. Here, CDs were synthesized via a solvothermal route from citric acid and urea. Through the oxidation and reduction treatment of pristine CDs, the origin of the photoluminescence and the involved mechanism were revealed. We found that the blue/green/red emissions originated from three diverse emitting states, i.e. the intrinsic state, and C=O- and C=N-related surface states, respectively. Based on the as-prepared CDs, a pH sensor depending on the radiometric luminescence detection was developed. Furthermore, we constructed CD/PVP (PVP, polyvinylpyrrolidone) composite films, which exhibited white light emission with photoluminescence QYs of 15.3%. The white light emission with different correlated color temperatures (CCTs), from 4807 K to 3319 K, was obtained by simply changing the amount of PVP solution. Benefiting from the white light-emitting solid-state films, single-component white light-emitting diodes were fabricated with an average color rendering index value (Ra) of 80.0, luminous efficiency of 10.2 lm W-1, and good working stability, thus indicating a promising potential for practical lighting applications.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) are attracting much interest due to their excellent photoelectric properties and wide range of potential applications. However, it is still a challenge to regulate their bandgap emissions to achieve full-color CDs with high emissions. Herein, we propose an approach for producing full-color emissive CDs by employing a solvent engineering strategy. By only tuning the volume ratio of water and dimethylformamide (H2O/DMF), the photoluminescence (PL) emission wavelengths of the CDs can be changed from 451 to 654 nm. Different fluorescence features of multicolor CDs were systematically investigated. XRD, SEM, TEM, Abs/PL/PLE, XPS, and PL decay lifetime characterizations provided conclusive evidence supporting the extent to which the solvent controlled the dehydration and carbonization processes of the precursors, leading to a variation in their emission color from red to blue. The as-prepared CDs exhibited excellent and stable fluorescence performance even after being heated at 80 °C for 48 h and with UV light continuously irradiated for 15 h. Based on their excellent fluorescent properties and photothermal stability, bright multicolor light-emitting diodes with a high CRI of up to 91 were obtained. We anticipate that these full-color emissive CDs are beneficial for applications in lighting, display, and other fields.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs), a rising star in carbon nanomaterials, have attracted enormous attention since their discovery in 2004. Up to now, a large number of approaches have been developed to synthesize CDs, and many efforts have been made to exploit facile, low-cost and large-scale preparation routes. At the same time, photoluminescence (PL) mechanisms of CDs have been tremendously investigated, primarily attributed to surface state, carbon core state, molecule state and their synergistic effect. And on account of their favorable properties, such as excellent optical properties, outstanding biocompatibility, attractive catalytic performance, ultrasmall size, low toxicity and environmental friendliness, CDs have been extensively employed in biomedicine, sensing, catalysis, optoelectronic devices, lubrication, etc. This review comprehensively summarizes the development of synthetic strategies, PL mechanisms and promising applications of CDs. Based on the summary, the prospects and challenges for research into CDs are discussed in depth. This review aims to encourage related researchers to overcome various existing technical challenges, make up the insufficiency of the existing research and tap into the full potential of CDs.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) are a vibrant subset of luminescent nanomaterials exhibiting structural and physicochemical properties that make them an ideal platform for the development of biological imaging agents, optoelectronic devices, and energy conversion/storage devices. In recent years, research relating to CDs has grown exponentially, although not without controversy relating to the structure of CDs and structure–property relationships. Many historical misconceptions about CDs are slowly being resolved by approaching the synthesis and characterization of CDs with appropriate scientific rigor. This review highlights the recent advances in the synthesis and applications of CDs, paying particular attention to the association between CD structure, properties, and usage, while highlighting important new trends in CD research.

Abstract:In this review, the long afterglow of carbon dots (including room temperature phosphorescence (RTP), delayed fluorescence (DF), and long persistent luminescence (LPL)) from the perspective of matrix‐free and matrix‐based carbon dots and their applications in the field of information encryption, anticounterfeiting, sensing, biological imaging, multicolor display, etc., are mainly summarized. Carbon dots (CDs) have gradually become a new generation of nano‐luminescent materials, which have received extensive attention due to excellent optical properties, wide source of raw materials, low toxicity, and good biocompatibility. In recent years, there are many reports on the luminescent phenomenon of CDs, and great progress has been achieved. However,there are rarely systematic summaries on CDs with persistent luminescence. Here, a summary of the recent progress on persistent luminescent CDs, including luminous mechanism, synthetic strategies, property regulation, and potential applications, is given. First, a brief introduction is given to the development of CDs luminescent materials. Then, the luminous mechanism of afterglow CDs from room temperature phosphorescence (RTP), delayed fluorescence (DF), and long persistent luminescence (LPL) is discussed. Next, the constructed methods of luminescent CDs materials are summarized from two aspects, including matrix‐free self‐protected and matrix‐protected CDs. Moreover, the regulation of afterglow properties from color, lifetime, and efficiency is presented. Afterwards, the potential applications of CDs, such as anti‐counterfeiting, information encryption, sensing, bio‐imaging, multicolor display, LED devices, etc., are reviewed. Finally, an outlook on the development of CDs materials and applications is proposed.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) are a new type of carbon nanomaterial that have unique physical and chemical properties, good biocompatibility, low toxicity, and easy surface functionalization, making them widely used in biological imaging, environmental monitoring, chemical analysis, targeted drug delivery, disease diagnosis, therapy, etc. In this review, our content is mainly divided into four parts. In the first part, we focused on the preparation methods of CDs, including arc discharge, laser ablation, electrochemical oxidation, chemical oxidation, combustion, hydrothermal/solvent thermal, microwave, template, method etc. Next, we summarized methods of CD modification, including heteroatom doping and surface functionalization. Then, we discussed the optical properties of CDs (ultraviolet absorption, photoluminescence, up-conversion fluorescence, etc.). Lastly, we reviewed the common applications of CDs in biomedicine from the aspects of in vivo and in vitro imaging, sensors, drug delivery, cancer theranostics, etc. Furthermore, we also discussed the existing problems and the future development direction of CDs.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs), as a new type of carbon-based nanomaterial, have attracted broad research interest for years, because of their diverse physicochemical properties and favorable attributes like good biocompatibility, unique optical properties, low cost, ecofriendliness, abundant functional groups (e.g., amino, hydroxyl, carboxyl), high stability, and electron mobility. In this Outlook, we comprehensively summarize the classification of CDs based on the analysis of their formation mechanism, micro-/nanostructure and property features, and describe their synthetic methods and optical properties including strong absorption, photoluminescence, and phosphorescence. Furthermore, the recent significant advances in diverse applications, including optical (sensor, anticounterfeiting), energy (light-emitting diodes, catalysis, photovoltaics, supercapacitors), and promising biomedicine, are systematically highlighted. Finally, we envisage the key issues to be challenged, future research directions, and perspectives to show a full picture of CDs-based materials.Carbon dots possessing various appealing properties such as good biocompatibility, high quantum yield, strong absorption, show promising optical, energy, and biomedicine applications.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) have excellent optical properties, low toxicity and easy preparation, which have led to them being widely used in biomedicine, sensing and optical devices. However, although great progress has been made in the preparation of CDs, the detailed exploration of their photoluminescence (PL) mechanism is still under debate due to their complex structures and surface functionalities. Here, we proposed a single change in the pH of the synthesis condition, which had no effect on the CDs intrinsic core states and avoided the mutual influence of multiple PL origins. The m-phenylenediamine (m−PD) served as a carbon source, whose protonation degree determined the surface state of the resulting CDs and the accompanying fluorescence characteristics. The as-obtained CDs materials can be applied in the chemical sensor and anti-counterfeiting fields in a targeted manner. Therefore, our work not only contributes to the explanation of the CDs PL mechanism, but also obtains a series of CDs materials with controllable PL properties.

Abstract:Photoluminescence (PL) nanomaterials are widely used by scientists because of their important applications in optoelectronic devices and biomedicine, such as use in organic dyes, semiconductor quantum dots, perovskites quantum dots, fluorescent nanoclusters, and carbon dots (CDs). Among these, CDs have attracted widespread attention due to their outstanding PL properties. Therefore, a better understanding between CD fluorescence and afterglow emission is needed to achieve controllable structures and adjustable PL. In this review, we discuss the preparation and related applications of CDs by considering their structures and optical properties. First, the PL mechanism and the preparation methods of CDs with excellent optical properties are introduced. Subsequently, the adjustment of CD afterglow emission was highlighted from the perspective of intersystem crossing, triplet non-radiative decay rate, and the overall quenching rate. Then, we discuss the important optical applications of CDs. Finally, the research development and potential challenges of CDs are presented.

The application of CDs in the field of optoelectronics has also seen unprecedented development due to their excellent optical properties, but reviews of them in this field are relatively rare. With the idea of deepening and broadening the understanding of the applications of CDs in the field of optoelectronics, this review for the first time provides a detailed summary of their applications in the field of luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs), light‐emitting diodes (LEDs), solar cells, and photodetectors. Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs), which are emerging as a novel class of carbon-based functional nanomaterials, can be fabricated from various carbon-based materials such as graphite, activated carbon, carbon nanotubes and many other organic materials. Recently, researchers have paid attention to emerging CDs and investigated their application prospects in a variety of fields, including optical, energy and biomedical technologies. In this review, we provide an up-to-date account of the design, preparation, fundamentals and applications of functional CDs. We begin with an overview on the synthetic methods of novel CDs, including "bottom-up" and "top-down" approaches, post-synthetic modification and functionalisation, through which the diverse properties of CDs such as optical, dispersibility and biocompatibility properties are introduced. We then showcase the applications of advanced CDs in different fields, including optical applications (data security, sensors, light-emitting diodes, and chiral), energy applications (photocatalysts, solar photovoltaics, supercapacitors, and lithium-ion batteries) and promising biomedical applications (bioimaging and nanomedicine). We discuss the fundamental design ideas of such emerging and unique CDs, introduce their synthetic strategies and emphasise their significant applications. This review is expected to provide significant impetus towards the rapid expansion of this new materials field which is rooted in materials chemistry. The fields covered include physics, chemistry, biology, nanotechnology, energy, polymers, device engineering and other interdisciplinary areas.

Abstract:Afterglow carbon dots (CDs) have attracted increasing attention in recent years. The emission color of afterglow CDs can be regulated by external factors, which is highly significant for expanding the diversified applications. This review classifies and summarizes multicolor afterglow CDs in recent years, including luminescence regulation strategies, preparation methods, and applications, and provide ideas for controlled design and wide application. Afterglow materials have attracted much attention owing to their long luminescence lifetimes, large Stokes shifts, and emission without real‐time excitation. Compared with traditional organic afterglow materials, carbon dots (CDs), as a new afterglow material, have superior properties such as easy preparation, low toxicity, and low cost. The emission color of afterglow CDs can be regulated by external factors such as excitation wavelength, temperature, and time, which is highly significant for expanding the diversified applications to make them available for biotechnology and information applications. This review summarizes the research progress of multicolor afterglow CDs in recent years, including luminescence regulation strategies, preparation methods, and applications. First, the multicolor afterglow CDs are classified into three strategies: multicolor room temperature phosphorescence (RTP), thermally activated delayed fluorescence converted to RTP, and delayed fluorescence based on Förster resonance energy transfer, and the strategies for regulating their luminescence properties are analyzed. Second, the preparation methods of achieving multicolor afterglow CDs are summarized in both matrix‐free and matrix‐confined aspects. Then, applications in anticounterfeiting and information encryption, sensing and bioimaging are introduced in detail. Finally, the future challenges and opportunities of multicolor afterglow CDs are prospected to provide ideas for their controlled design and wide application.

This range may, however, be misleading in certain clinical conditions. We report here a patient with hypoalbuminaemia who developed marked clinical phenytoin toxicity despite maintenance of the serum total phenytoin concentration within the therapeutic range.

Abstract:<p>Carbon dots (CDs), as a new member of carbon nanostructures, have been widely applied in extensive fields due to their exceptional physicochemical properties. While, the emissions of most reported CDs are located in the blue to green range under the excitation of ultraviolet or blue light, which severely limits their practical applications, especially in photovoltaic and biological fields. Studies that focused on synthesizing CDs with long-wavelength (red to near-infrared) emission/excitation features (simply named L-w CDs) and exploring their potential applications have been frequently reported in recent years. In this review, we analyzed the key influence factors for the synthesis of CDs with long wavelength and multicolor (containing long wavelength) emissive properties, discussed possible fluorescence mechanism, and summarized their applications in sensing and cancer theranostics. Finally, the existing challenges and potential opportunities of L-w CDs are presented.</p>

Abstract:Carbon nanodots (CDs), a new star in the carbon nanomaterials family, have been demonstrated to show strong luminescence, and can meet the needs of large-scale production for biological and medical applications due to their low toxicity and biocompatibility. However, their luminescence mechanisms, such as color tuning and strong excitation-dependent luminescence, are still unclear. Herein, we present a state-of-the-art understanding and manipulating luminescence in CDs by changing their environmental states and using multiple spectroscopic methods as well as the first-principles theoretical calculations. Our study reveals that the edge-carbon atoms and incorporated nitrogen atoms play critical roles in the luminescence mechanisms of CDs, and thus paves the way for manipulation of luminescence in CDs.
