Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs), a rising star in carbon nanomaterials, have attracted enormous attention since their discovery in 2004. Up to now, a large number of approaches have been developed to synthesize CDs, and many efforts have been made to exploit facile, low-cost and large-scale preparation routes. At the same time, photoluminescence (PL) mechanisms of CDs have been tremendously investigated, primarily attributed to surface state, carbon core state, molecule state and their synergistic effect. And on account of their favorable properties, such as excellent optical properties, outstanding biocompatibility, attractive catalytic performance, ultrasmall size, low toxicity and environmental friendliness, CDs have been extensively employed in biomedicine, sensing, catalysis, optoelectronic devices, lubrication, etc. This review comprehensively summarizes the development of synthetic strategies, PL mechanisms and promising applications of CDs. Based on the summary, the prospects and challenges for research into CDs are discussed in depth. This review aims to encourage related researchers to overcome various existing technical challenges, make up the insufficiency of the existing research and tap into the full potential of CDs.

Abstract:Multicolor carbon dots (CDs) as an emerging subclass of carbonaceous nanomaterials have inspired intensive attention due to the fascinating fluorogenic properties of quantum dots, exhibiting great potential applications in the biomedical field. In some cases, reported CDs with blue or green fluorescence are not desirable for further biological applications owing to the conflicting background autofluorescence, low penetration, and relatively large damage to biological tissue. However, multicolor CDs that can work in the longer wavelength region are being developed to address this issue by overcoming the autofluorescence from the cellular components (usually in the blue and green range). In this review, the development of multicolor CDs is described comprehensively, including for red‐emissive or NIR‐emissive CDs. Additionally, the preparation methods of multicolor CDs are summarized. Moreover, the factors affecting the luminescence of multicolor CDs are discussed in detail, and the biomedical applications are emphasized from multiple perspectives.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs), novel luminescent zero-dimensional carbon nanomaterials, have been widely applied due to their low toxicity, optimal optical properties, and easy modification. However, the current controllable equipment and mechanism explanation of CDs are relatively vague and require urgent resolution. Full-color emission CDs, an essential CDs category, have attracted people's attention given their light and color-tunable properties. In addition to a wider range of biological and optoelectronic device applications, full-color emission CDs have similar structures and significantly affected the fluorescence mechanism of CDs. At present, few studies have reported on the research of CDs emitted by its full color, which greatly limits the development of CDs mechanisms and applications. As such, the present review detailed the full-color CDs development status, to which a suitable method for preparing full-color CDs was presented and the existing fluorescence emission mechanism of full-color CDs was summarized. Herein, we comprehensively introduced full-color CDs applications in biology and optoelectronics. Finally, we made an outlook on the development and potential applications of full-color CDs. The present review aims to contribute novel insights and methods for understanding full-color CDs.

Abstract:Although there is significant progress in the research of carbon dots (CDs), some challenges such as difficulty in large-scale synthesis, complicated purification, low quantum yield, ambiguity in structure-property correlation, electronic structures, and photophysics are still major obstacles that hinder the commercial use of CDs. Recent advances in synthesis, modification, characterization, and applications of CDs are summarized in this review. We illustrate some examples to correlate process parameters, structures, compositions, properties, and performances of CDs-based materials. The advances in the synthesis approach, purification methods, and modification/doping methods for the synthesis of CDs are also presented. Moreover, some examples of the kilogram-scale fabrication of CDs are given. The properties and performance of CDs can be tuned by some synthesis parameters, such as the incubation time and precursor ratio, the laser pulse width, and the average molar mass of the polymeric precursor. Surface passivation also has a significant influence on the particle sizes of CDs. Moreover, some factors affect the properties and performance of CDs, such as the polarity-sensitive fluorescence effect and concentration-dependent multicolor luminescence, together with the size and surface states of CDs. The synchrotron near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) test has been proved to be a useful tool to explore the correlation among structural features, photophysics, and emission performance of CDs. Recent advances of CDs in bioimaging, sensing, therapy, energy, fertilizer, separation, security authentication, food packing, flame retardant, and co-catalyst for environmental remediation applications were reviewed in this article. Furthermore, the roles of CDs, doped CDs, and their composites in these applications were also demonstrated.

Abstract:As a sort of fluorescent carbon nanomaterial with a particle size of less than 10 nm, carbon dots (CDs) have their own merits of good dispersibility in water, stable optical properties, strong chemical inertness, stable optical properties, and good biosecurity. These excellent peculiarities facilitated them like sensing, imaging, medicine, catalysis, and optoelectronics, making them a new star in the field of nanotechnology. In particular, the development of CDs in the fields of chemical probes, imaging, cancer therapy, antibacterial and drug delivery has become a hot topic in current research. Although the biomedical applications in CDs have been demonstrated in many research articles, a systematic summary of their role in biomedical applications is scarce. In this review, we introduced the basic information of CDs in detail, including synthesis approaches of CDs as well as their favorable properties including photoluminescence and low cytotoxicity. Subsequently, the application of CDs in the field of biomedicine was emphasized. Finally, the main challenges and research prospects of CDs in this field were proposed, which might provide some detailed information in designing new CDs in this promising biomedical field.

Abstract:Tuning the optical properties of carbon dots (CDs) and figuring out the mechanisms underneath the emissive phenomena have been one of the most cutting-edge topics in the development of carbon-based nanomaterials. Dual-emissive CDs possess the intrinsic dual-emission character upon single-wavelength excitation, which significantly benefits their multi-purpose applications. Explosive exploitations of dual-emissive CDs have been reported during the past five years. Nevertheless, there is a lack of a systematic summary of the rising star nanomaterial. In this review, we summarize the synthesis strategies and optical mechanisms of the dual-emissive CDs. The applications in the areas of biosensing, bioimaging, as well as photoelectronic devices are also outlined. The last section presents the main challenges and perspectives in further promoting the development of dual-emissive CDs. By covering the most vital publications, we anticipate that the review is of referential significance for researchers in the synthesis, characterization, and application of dual-emissive CDs.

Abstract:<p>As a new type of nanomaterial, carbon dots (CDs) have been recognized as a versatile nanoplatform with enormous potential for biomedical and optoelectronic applications because of low cytotoxicity, photostability, biocompatibility and versatility in addition to their tunable photoluminescence. In this review, we aim at updating the latest research on preparation, optoelectronic and chemical properties of CDs as well as their biomedical and optoelectronic applications. We highlight the applications of CDs for stem cell imaging, cell nucleus imaging, two‐photon fluorescence imaging, tumor diagnosis and therapy and their optoelectronic applications including light‐emitting diodes (LEDs), solar cells and electrocatalysis. Furthermore, we also discuss current challenges and breakthroughs on machine‐learning‐driven synthesis of CDs as well as nucleic acid detection with an eye towards the future. Finally, we hope that this review will give further impulses to target‐oriented research on CDs for biomedical and optoelectronic applications.</p><p>This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) are a new type of carbon nanomaterial that have unique physical and chemical properties, good biocompatibility, low toxicity, and easy surface functionalization, making them widely used in biological imaging, environmental monitoring, chemical analysis, targeted drug delivery, disease diagnosis, therapy, etc. In this review, our content is mainly divided into four parts. In the first part, we focused on the preparation methods of CDs, including arc discharge, laser ablation, electrochemical oxidation, chemical oxidation, combustion, hydrothermal/solvent thermal, microwave, template, method etc. Next, we summarized methods of CD modification, including heteroatom doping and surface functionalization. Then, we discussed the optical properties of CDs (ultraviolet absorption, photoluminescence, up-conversion fluorescence, etc.). Lastly, we reviewed the common applications of CDs in biomedicine from the aspects of in vivo and in vitro imaging, sensors, drug delivery, cancer theranostics, etc. Furthermore, we also discussed the existing problems and the future development direction of CDs.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) have excellent optical properties, low toxicity and easy preparation, which have led to them being widely used in biomedicine, sensing and optical devices. However, although great progress has been made in the preparation of CDs, the detailed exploration of their photoluminescence (PL) mechanism is still under debate due to their complex structures and surface functionalities. Here, we proposed a single change in the pH of the synthesis condition, which had no effect on the CDs intrinsic core states and avoided the mutual influence of multiple PL origins. The m-phenylenediamine (m−PD) served as a carbon source, whose protonation degree determined the surface state of the resulting CDs and the accompanying fluorescence characteristics. The as-obtained CDs materials can be applied in the chemical sensor and anti-counterfeiting fields in a targeted manner. Therefore, our work not only contributes to the explanation of the CDs PL mechanism, but also obtains a series of CDs materials with controllable PL properties.

Abstract:Afterglow carbon dots (CDs) have attracted increasing attention in recent years. The emission color of afterglow CDs can be regulated by external factors, which is highly significant for expanding the diversified applications. This review classifies and summarizes multicolor afterglow CDs in recent years, including luminescence regulation strategies, preparation methods, and applications, and provide ideas for controlled design and wide application. Afterglow materials have attracted much attention owing to their long luminescence lifetimes, large Stokes shifts, and emission without real‐time excitation. Compared with traditional organic afterglow materials, carbon dots (CDs), as a new afterglow material, have superior properties such as easy preparation, low toxicity, and low cost. The emission color of afterglow CDs can be regulated by external factors such as excitation wavelength, temperature, and time, which is highly significant for expanding the diversified applications to make them available for biotechnology and information applications. This review summarizes the research progress of multicolor afterglow CDs in recent years, including luminescence regulation strategies, preparation methods, and applications. First, the multicolor afterglow CDs are classified into three strategies: multicolor room temperature phosphorescence (RTP), thermally activated delayed fluorescence converted to RTP, and delayed fluorescence based on Förster resonance energy transfer, and the strategies for regulating their luminescence properties are analyzed. Second, the preparation methods of achieving multicolor afterglow CDs are summarized in both matrix‐free and matrix‐confined aspects. Then, applications in anticounterfeiting and information encryption, sensing and bioimaging are introduced in detail. Finally, the future challenges and opportunities of multicolor afterglow CDs are prospected to provide ideas for their controlled design and wide application.

Solvent-controlled synthesis strategy of multicolor emission carbon dots and its applications in sensing and light-emitting devices

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs), as a new kind of carbon-based luminescent nanomaterials, have drawn widespread attention in the fields of fluorescence sensing, optoelectronic devices, and biological imaging. This work uses citric acid (CA) and Nile Blue A (NBA) as precursors. By simply changing the solvent in the reaction, their bandgaps were systematically controlled, thereby successfully obtaining bright blue, yellow and red fluorescence emission CDs (B-, Y- and RCDs). The higher quantum yield (QY) of B-, Y- and RCDs are 64%, 57% and 51%, respectively. The selected precursors and different solvents are the key to the formation of three emission CDs. Detailed characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations further indicate that the difference in emission color of CDs is due to the size of the sp2 conjugate domain. In addition, we used multicolor CDs as fluorescent probes to investigate their performance in detection. Among them, BCDs and YCDs can detect Sudan Red I with high selectivity and sensitivity. In the concentration range of 0 to 80 µM, the detection limits are 56 and 41 nM, respectively. Multicolor emitting phosphors and fluorescent films are also obtained by mixing CDs with other matrices. Using Ultraviolet (UV) chip as the excitation source and combining with multicolor fluorescent film and a certain proportion of B-, Y-, and RCDs/epoxy resin composites, bright monochromatic light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and white LED (WLED) with high color rendering index (CRI) were prepared. The above results indicate that the multicolor CDs prepared by us have great application potential in the fields of food safety control and optical devices.

Abstract:Due to the favorable biocompatibility, photostability and fluorescence emissions, carbon dots (CDs) are being widely investigated as fluorescent probes. Current CD-based fluorescent probe designs depend largely on conventional fluorescence sensing mechanisms, for e.g. the inner filter effect, photoinduced electron transfer, and Förster resonance energy transfer. Although these mechanisms have been successful, it is still desirable to introduce new sensing mechanisms. In recent years, emerging mechanisms such as aggregation-induced emission, hydrogen-bond induced emission, and intramolecular charge transfer have been developed for CD-based probes. This review summarizes both conventional and emerging mechanisms, and discuss CDs in the context of chemosensing, biosensing, and bioimaging. We provide an outlook for several other mechanisms such as CN isomerization, the short-wavelength inner filter technique, excited-state intramolecular proton transfer, and twisted intramolecular charge transfer, which have been applied to organic fluorescent probes design but not as much in CD-based sensing systems. We envision that this review will provide insights that inspire further development of CD-based fluorescent probes as for biological applications.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs), as a rising star among fluorescent nanomaterials with excellent optical properties and fascinating dual-emission characteristics, have attracted increasing attention in sensing, bio-imaging, drug delivery, and so on. The synthesis of dual-emission CDs (DE-CDs) and the establishment of ratiometric fluorescence sensors can effectively diminish background interference and provide more accurate results than single-emission CDs. Although DE-CDs have generated increased attention in many fields, the review articles about DE-CDs are still insufficient. Therefore, we summarized the latest results and prepared this review. This review first provides an overview of the primary synthesis route and commonly used precursors in DE-CDs synthesis. Then, the photoluminescence mechanism behind the dual-emission phenomenon was discussed. Thirdly, the application of DE-CDs in metal cation detection, food safety analysis, biosensing, cell imaging, and optoelectronic devices has been extensively discussed. Finally, the main challenges and prospects for further development are presented. This review presents the latest research progress of DE-CDs synthesis and its application in ratiometric sensing; hopefully, it can help and encourage researchers to overcome existing challenges and broaden the area of DE-CDs research.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs), comprising crystalline graphitized carbon cores and polymer surface groups, are currently attracting a lot of interest in biological fields owing to their fluorescent properties, high photostability, biocompatibility and low toxicity. In addition, the easy preparation and functionalization of CDs stimulate the development of CDs‐based composite materials with specific functions. Presently, the biological applications of CDs are growing at a remarkable speed, justifying the need for up‐to‐date review articles that capture recent progress in this blossoming field. In this review, breakthroughs in the synthesis, modification, optical properties, toxicology and biocatalytic platforms of CDs are described. Further, recent research related to bioimaging, biosensing, drug delivery, antibacterial, anticancer (photothermal therapy, photodynamic therapy and synergistic therapy) and antiviral therapies involving CDs are discussed in detail. Finally, a perspective on the prospects and challenges of CDs in the fields of biomedicine and biotechnology is provided. Abstract:Fluorescent carbon dots (CDs)-based nanomaterials exhibited promising potential in the fields of biomedicine, bioanalysis, and biosensors. In this work, multi-colored fluorescent carbonized polymer dots (CPDs) ranging from blue to red are obtained using different synthesis methods using citric acid and urea as raw materials, and the controllable synthesis of CPDs with multi-color fluorescence is successfully realized. Then, the photoluminescence (PL) mechanism of CPDs is studied using multiple characterization methods, and the key factors affecting the fluorescence emission wavelength of CPDs are discussed. It is shown that the fluorescence of the CPDs originates from three main components: the carbon nuclei in the intrinsic state, the functional groups in the surface state, and the molecular fluorophores adsorbed on the surface of the CPDs. The reaction temperature and reaction time affect the effective conjugation size of the carbon nuclei, which in turn affects the fluorescence redshift of CPDs; the reaction solvent greatly alters the surface state of CPDs (e.g. surface defects and functional groups), which leads to a significant redshift in the fluorescence of CPDs; the presence of molecular fluorophores facilitates the fluorescence redshift of CPDs. Finally, we have successfully applied the prepared red fluorescent CPDs for in vitro cell imaging. The study on the color regulation mechanism of CPDs is of great significance for the controllable preparation of high-performance fluorescent CDs and their application in the field of biomedicine.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs), which are emerging as a novel class of carbon-based functional nanomaterials, can be fabricated from various carbon-based materials such as graphite, activated carbon, carbon nanotubes and many other organic materials. Recently, researchers have paid attention to emerging CDs and investigated their application prospects in a variety of fields, including optical, energy and biomedical technologies. In this review, we provide an up-to-date account of the design, preparation, fundamentals and applications of functional CDs. We begin with an overview on the synthetic methods of novel CDs, including "bottom-up" and "top-down" approaches, post-synthetic modification and functionalisation, through which the diverse properties of CDs such as optical, dispersibility and biocompatibility properties are introduced. We then showcase the applications of advanced CDs in different fields, including optical applications (data security, sensors, light-emitting diodes, and chiral), energy applications (photocatalysts, solar photovoltaics, supercapacitors, and lithium-ion batteries) and promising biomedical applications (bioimaging and nanomedicine). We discuss the fundamental design ideas of such emerging and unique CDs, introduce their synthetic strategies and emphasise their significant applications. Research on the spectral properties of luminescent carbon dots

Abstract:This paper is trying to research the developing status of carbon dots (CDs), and the results show that the simple, rapid and high yield synthetic methods for CDs and the application of CDs in biological science and analysis field will certainly become an inevitable development trend in the future. The CDs obtained by microwave possess excellent optical properties including UV-Vis absorption, fluorescence and room temperature phosphorescence. Under the conditions of 30 °C and 10 min, the fluorescence signal (F) of CDs not only could be enhanced by hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), Triton X-100, Na(2)S, Na(2)C(2)O(4) and NH(3).H(2)O, but also could be quenched by sodium dodecyl sulfate, KBrO(3), K(2)S(2)O(8), NaIO(4), ascorbic acid, NaBH(4), HNO(3), HCl, H(2)SO(4), CH(3)COOH and most metal ions, with the λ(em)(max) blue or red shifting in varying degrees, indicating the potential values of CDs in analytical application. Besides, the sensitive response of F to pH showed the promise of developing a new pH sensor with CDs.
