Abstract:Formation and preservation of extremely high-pressure fluid in sedimentary basins is critical to understanding petroleum accumulation and basin evolution; however, this issue remains poorly understood due to a lack of key evidence. We present fluid inclusion evidence from the Paleozoic black shales in the eastern Sichuan Basin (South China block) that suggest that gas generation can form methane-saturated fluids with pressures significantly exceeding the lithostatic pressure. The fluid inclusion internal pressure is so high (e.g., ~77 MPa) that gas hydrate formed at ambient temperature, aqueous-vapor homogenization could not be achieved under ambient pressure, and the homogenization pressure was beyond the scope of the current equation of state for the NaCl-H2O-CH4 system. We infer that the formation of high-pressure (e.g., >230 MPa), methane-saturated fluids induces hydrofracture under weak compressional tectonic regimes, where the excess lithostatic fluids can be accumulated and sustained. Fluid inclusion records with an abnormally high magnitude of overpressure indicate small differential stress and thus can serve as a microscale indicator for tectonic quiescence.

Abstract:Gas-bearing sediments are widely distributed in marine and lacustrine areas. The engineering properties of gas-bearing sediments, containing enclosed bubbles, are significantly different with that of saturated and unsaturated sediments. This paper investigates the consolidation behaviors of gas-bearing sediments with modulus varying along depth subjected to horizontal load using an extended precise integration method (XPIM). The compressibility of enclosed bubble is introduced to a new derived seepage equation and a varying modulus along depth is considered in governing equations. With the aid of integral transformation and Taylor expansion, such problems are solved by XPIM, which is proved to be markedly efficient and precise for boundary value problems of porous media than traditional numerical methods. Detailed comparisons against analytical solutions are performed to confirm the accurateness of XPIM. Extensive parametric investigations are conducted to examine the influence of saturation degree, varying modulus along depth and type of external load on the consolidation behaviors of gas-bearing sediments. The present work is conveniently utilized to evaluate the behavior of gas-bearing sediments, and subsequently the response of foundations built in gas-bearing soil areas.

Abstract:Shale oil and gas exploration and development are extending to greater depths, and it is important to understand the accumulation mechanisms of shale oil and gas. Here we conducted a case study in the Upper Ordovician Wufeng Formation-Lower Silurian Longmaxi Formation in the Ningxi area, Sichuan Basin, southwest China, by using petrological and fluid inclusion investigation to determine the processes involved during the overpressureinduced self-sealing accumulation of deep shale gas. Results show that fibrous quartz-calcite veins in the source rocks contain abundant gas inclusions and coeval two-phase gas-liquid aqueous inclusions. The gas inclusions are relatively uniform, translucent to transparent, single-phase inclusions with a high density, indicative of a closed shale system. The gas inclusions record varying levels of fluid overpressure (115.23-169.46 MPa), with a paleo-pressure coefficient of 2.12-2.98. Fluid overpressure and self-sealing resulted in shale gas accumulation, with bedding-parallel and laminar fractures acting as important migration pathways, which improved the horizontal porosity and permeability of the shale. These processes are common and important phenomena in petroleum systems. Unconventional oil and gas development commonly requires horizontal fracturing of wells to form a fracture network, which can improve the production capacity.

Abstract:Shale oil is becoming increasingly important in the global energy market, but its accumulation mechanism is not fully understood. We present novel and direct fluid inclusion data from the Lower Permian Fengcheng Formation, Mahu Sag, Junggar Basin, northwest China. Shortite veins in this source rock contain abundant two-phase gas-liquid hydrocarbon inclusions and coeval aqueous inclusions. The inclusions have highly variable degrees of bubble filling (5-80 vol% vapor) and homogenization temperature differences between oil and aqueous inclusions (similar to 50 degrees C), which demonstrate that fluid (oil-gas-water) immiscibility occurred at high pressures. The hydrocarbon inclusions record different levels of fluid overpressure (32.9-43.0 MPa), with a paleopressure coefficient of 1.3-1.7. Episodic fluid overpressure release resulted in shale oil accumulation, with faults/fractures acting as important migration pathways. Oil from deeper and more mature source rocks within the Fengcheng Formation was expelled upward to the shale oil reservoir. These processes are common and important in shale oil systems. These results show that the accumulation of unconventional hydrocarbons occurs pervasively within the reservoirs, and fluid displacement is critical in exploration and exploitation.

Abstract:Investigating paleo-fluid activity relative to the burial history of a reservoir remains one of the most direct proxies to estimate paleo-pressure conditions and evaluate the diagenesis of a deeply-buried reservoir (DBR). In this study, a multidisciplinary approach comprising petrographic observations, fluid inclusions studies, Raman spectroscopy and fluid & basin modeling techniques are applied on samples of the Sinian Dengying reservoir, Sichuan Basin to reveal the pressure evolution through time. U/Pb absolute age dating is also carried out on selected cement phases to further compliment and support the modeling approach. Petrographic observations reveal a paragenetic sequence starting with early calcites and dolomites, proceeded by fracture-related saddle dolomite, calcite, quartz and fluorite. Modeling of trapping P-T conditions of fluid inclusions (FIs) trapped in these phases was coupled with basin modeling to indicate the timing of entrapment and evolution of overpressure conditions. With the onset of the rapid burial from late Permian, the source rocks quickly over-matured causing an overpressure buildup (ΔP) of 60 bars as revealed by FIs trapped in the saddle dolomites, which have a U/Pb age of 250.8±8.1Ma. The compressive regime during the Yanshanian movement and the associated fluids that circulated precipitated quartz and fluorite at high overpressure conditions reaching 360 to 690 bars. Isotope dating of fluorite reveal an age of (125.8±8.2) Ma (Xu et al, 2018)and (106.8±7.5)Ma for the two phases respectively. The high thermal anomalies of the (Triassic, with temperatures reaching nearly 260°C, favored the destruction and cracking of oil into gas with trace amounts of H 2 S detected in the fluid inclusions. The presence of H 2 S and reduced sulfur species in the form of pyrite (FeS 2 ) and galena (PbS) hint towards an active TSR kitchen than can contribute to oil cracking and pressure development. The diagenetic history then ends with a sharp drop in overpressure conditions (from ΔP of 367 bars to ΔP = 0 bars) since the Paleogene to equilibrate with the present-day drilling hydrostatic pressures. The combination of rapid source rock maturity, rapid subsidence, and thermal cracking of oil led to an overpressured regime that preserved good reservoir porosity even after the burial depth exceeded 7km. The multi-disciplinary approach used in this study can serve as a workflow to apply on other DBRs around the world to better understand the link between µm-scale fluids and the km-scale tectonics active in a basin.

Abstract:Abstract Tight gas exploration plays an important part in China’s unconventional energy strategy. The tight gas reservoirs in the Jurassic Shaximiao Formation in the Qiulin and Jinhua Gas Fields of central Sichuan Basin are characterized by shallow burial depths and large reserves. The evolution of the fluid phases is a key element in understanding the accumulation of hydrocarbons in tight gas reservoirs. This study investigates the fluid accumulation mechanisms and the indicators of reservoir properties preservation and degradation in a tight gas reservoir. Based on petrographic observations and micro-Raman spectroscopy, pure CH 4 inclusions, pure CO 2 inclusions, hybrid CH 4 –CO 2 gas inclusions, and N 2 -rich gas inclusions were studied in quartz grains. The pressure–volume–temperature–composition properties ( PVT-x ) of the CH 4 and CO 2 bearing inclusions were determined using quantitative Raman analysis and thermodynamic models, while the density of pure CO 2 inclusions was calculated based on the separation of Fermi diad. Two stages of CO 2 fluid accumulation were observed: primary CO 2 inclusions, characterized by higher densities (0.874–1.020 g/cm 3 ) and higher homogenization temperatures (> 210 °C) and secondary CO 2 inclusions, characterized by lower densities (0.514–0.715 g/cm 3 ) and lower homogenization temperatures: ~ 180–200 °C). CO 2 inclusions with abnormally high homogenization temperatures are thought to be the result of deep hydrothermal fluid activity. The pore fluid pressure (44.0–58.5 MPa) calculated from the Raman shift of C–H symmetric stretching ( v 1 ) band of methane inclusions is key to understanding the development of overpressure. PT entrapment conditions and simulation of burial history can be used to constrain the timing of paleo-fluid emplacement. Methane accumulated in the late Cretaceous (~ 75–65 Ma), close to the maximum burial depth during the early stages of the Himalayan tectonic event while maximum overpressure occurred at ~ 70 Ma, just before uplift. Later, hydrocarbon gas migrated through the faults and gradually displaced the early emplaced CO 2 in the reservoirs accompanied by a continuous decrease in overpressure during and after the Himalayan event, which has led to a decrease in the reservoir sealing capabilities. The continuous release of overpressure to present-day conditions indicates that the tectonic movement after the Himalayan period has led to a decline in reservoir conditions and sealing properties.

Abstract:Sichuan Basin is a typical superimposed basin, which experienced multi-phase tectonic movements, meanwhile Sinian–Cambrian underwent complex hydrocarbon accumulation processes, causing exploration difficulties in the past 60 years. Based on the microscopic evidence of fluid inclusions, combined with basin-modelling, this paper determines stages and time of hydrocarbon accumulation, reconstructs evolution of formation pressure and dynamic processes of hydrocarbon accumulation in Sinian Dengying Formation-Cambrian Longwangmiao Formation of Gaoshiti-Moxi structure. Three stages of inclusions are detected, including a stage of yellow-yellowgreen fluorescent oil inclusions, a stage of blue fluorescent oil-gas inclusions and a stage of non-fluorescent gas inclusions, reflecting the study area has experienced a series of complex hydrocarbon accumulation processes, such as formation of paleo-oil reservoirs, cracking of crude oil, formation of paleo-gas reservoirs and adjustment to present gas reservoirs, which occurred during 219–188, 192–146 and 168–0 Ma respectively. During the period of crude oil cracking, Dengying Formation-Longwangmiao Formation showed weak overpressure to overpressure characteristics, then after adjustment of paleo-gas reservoirs to present gas reservoirs, the pressure in Dengying Formation changed into overpressure but finally reduced to normal pressure system. However, due to excellent preservation conditions, the overpressure strength in Longwangmiao Formation only slightly decreased and was still kept to this day.

Abstract:Economically viable accumulations of hydrocarbons hosted in the Precambrian rocks are globally rare, as a protracted history available for them to escape or be destroyed due to various processes including thermal and bacterial degradations and tectonic disruption. A recent gas discovery in the late Ediacaran dolomites of the Sichuan Basin (SW China) provides an opportunity to understand the formation and preservation of ancient petroleum systems. Paleo fluid pressure-temperature-composition (P-T-X) conditions from deep burial to exhumation are evaluated from microthermometry and Raman data obtained from fluid inclusions. We identified three texturally distinct generations of gas-bearing fluid inclusion assemblages (FIAs), which delineate an operating petroleum system where gas remigrated during exhumation that followed oil cracking during deep burial. The older FIAs (types 1 and 2) show a petrographic association with bitumen and are interpreted to be the result of thermal cracking. Type 1 FIAs formed through in-situ cracking of pre-existing oil inclusions and have recorded the paleo oil charge during the middle Triassic to early Jurassic. Type 2 FIAs were trapped during the prolonged intra-reservoir oil cracking that occurred between the late Jurassic and late Cretaceous. Our pore pressure calculations indicate overpressured conditions, a result of active gas generation during thermal cracking. Lithostatic overpressures accumulated and were sustained under weak tectonic compression prior to peak burial. Type 3 FIAs have been interpreted as reflective of the gas-bearing system reactivation during exhumation. These FIAs indicate the relative reduction in the proportion of aqueous to gas inclusions, which may be due to a decrease in water saturation following gas emplacement. Uplift processes during early exhumation likely facilitated breaching of the system and remobilization of fluids, resulting in gas escape and overpressure release. The drastic increase in formation water salinity, which was documented in the fluid inclusion dataset, points to the arrival of hypersaline brine during the Eocene to Oligocene. This brine could have originated either from the lower Cambrian evaporated CaCl 2 seawater or from the dissolution of the lower-middle Triassic halite. From the late Miocene to present, progressively exhumed reservoirs may have received an influx of relatively fresh water from shallow aquifers, as shown by the correspondence between P-T-X records and present-day reservoir conditions.

Abstract:For this study 145 fluid inclusion samples from 19 wells have been analysed to unravel the relationship between the complex charging history and tectonic evolution of the Yitong Basin, Northeast China. Fluid inclusion petrography, microthermometry, transmitted light microscopy and micro fluorescence observation methods were employed to systematically obtain information on fluorescent colors of hydrocarbon inclusions, homogenization temperatures of oil inclusions and their coeval aqueous inclusions. The results indicate three events of oil charging and one gas charging event for the Paleogene reservoirs. The oil charging events have been reconstructed at 38.1–27Ma, 19.5–10Ma and 1–0Ma, while the gas charging event most likely occurred at 1–0Ma. When combining the known information on hydrocarbon charging history and structural evolution, two intermittent periods of hydrocarbon migration and accumulation are likely to have occurred at 27–19.6Ma and 10–2Ma, coupling to two structural events. It is suggested that these events caused the termination of hydrocarbon supply or destruction of the previously accumulated hydrocarbons.

Abstract:The Wufeng–Longmaxi Formation in northern Guizhou Province is the dominant shale gas exploration and development strata in China. This study investigates the Shixi and Daozhen synclines, which are located in the basin margin transition zone. This region experienced complex tectonic stages and superimposed transformations, resulting in heterogeneous preservation conditions and shale reservoir pressure evolution in different tectonic units of the Wufeng–Longmaxi Formation. Based on fluid inclusion analysis, the types of fluid inclusion and the fluid filling stages of the Wufeng–Longmaxi shale reservoir were determined by laser Raman analysis and homogenization temperature and salinity tests. It was found that the fluid inclusion density and paleopressure in each filling stage were then restored. The results confirm that: 1 Both the Shixi syncline and Daozhen syncline Wufeng–Longmaxi shale reservoirs experienced two fluid filling phases, in the early Yanshanian and late Yanshanian–Himalayan, respectively. In the course of tectonic evolution, the Wufeng–Longmaxi Formation in the Shixi and Daozhen synclines experienced pressure relief to some extent during the two aforementioned key fluid charging periods but remained in overpressurized states overall; 2 The Wufeng–Longmaxi Formations of the Shixi and Daozhen synclines are characterized by high-density methane inclusions; 3 Based on the differences in the structural preservation conditions, the pressure evolution mechanisms of the Wufeng–Longmaxi Formation Shales during the important tectonic evolution period in northern Guizhou Province were revealed. Furthermore, differential enrichment and accumulation models of shale gas were established and named "facing thrust structural sealing type (Shixi syncline)" and "reverse fault lateral blocking type (Daozhen syncline)".

Abstract:Overpressure is widely developed in marine sediments; it is not only a critical factor related to hydrocarbon accumulation, but also a serious safety issue for oil/gas exploration and exploitation. Although the mechanisms for overpressure development in sedimentary basins have been intensively studied, some new mechanisms are proposed for overpressure development with the advancements in marine geological investigation, e.g., natural gas hydrate formation and microbial activity. In this study, the mechanisms for overpressure development are reviewed and further classified as being related to associated physical, chemical, and biological processes. The physical overpressure mechanisms include disequilibrium compaction, hydrate formation sealing, degasification, buoyancy, hydrothermal pressuring, tectonic movement, overpressure transfer, etc. The chemical overpressure mechanisms are ascribed to hydrate decomposition, diagenesis, hydrocarbon generation, etc. The biological overpressure mechanisms are mainly induced by microbial gas production and microbial plugging. In gas hydrate-bearing sediments, overpressure is a critical factor affecting the formation and distribution of gas hydrate. The mechanisms for overpressure development in marine gas hydrate systems are associated with permeability deterioration due to hydrate formation and free gas accumulation below bottom-simulating reflectors (BSR). In marine sediments, overpressure developments are generally related to a sediment layer of low permeability above and natural gas accumulation below, and overpressure is mainly developed below a sulphate-methane interface (SMI), because methane will be consumed by anaerobic oxidation above SMI.

Abstract:The Penglai area is an emerging giant gas field in the Sichuan Basin supporting the carbon neutrality goal. To accelerate the exploration, this study combines petrographic observations using optical and cold cathodoluminescence microscopy, fluid inclusion microthermometry, Raman spectroscopy, 1D basin modeling and fluid inclusion PVTX modeling techniques to reveal the paleo-fluid P-T evolution in the second member of the Dengying Formation (Ediacaran age). The results firstly showed a diagenetic sequence which includes three phases of dolomite (1–3), bitumen, quartz (core and overgrowth) and fluorite. Then, ten paleo-fluid episodes were identified based on microthermometric histograms of different mineral phases. Finally, by integrating the Raman results, the hydrostatic and lithostatic gradients calculated by the constructed 1D basin model, and the existing equation of states, the homogenization pressure of fluid inclusions from each fluid episode was determined. By assuming the system was saturated by CH 4 as suggested by Raman results, the homogenization pressure equals to the trapping pressure. The P-T trajectory indicates that the second member of the Dengying Formation experienced two sever pressure accumulation stages. One is between fluid episode #3 and #4 recorded by dolomite 3, due to oil generation, and the other is from fluid episode #5 in dolomite 3 to episode #7 in quartz overgrowth to episode #8 in fluorite due to oil cracking to gas. Also, two pressure releasing periods were recorded by fluid episode #5 in dolomite 3 and #9 and #10 in fluorite, caused by both basin uplifting and fluid pressure reaching the lithostatic pressure. Origin mechanism of overpressure in saline lacustrine formation of the Paleogene and Neogene in the Western Qaidam Basin, NW China

Abstract:Previous research shows that the origin and distribution of formation overpressure are governed by several dominant factors including disequilibrium compaction, hydrocarbon generation, tectonic compression and diagenesis, influenced by salt components and their concentration, but it is unclear how salts affect formation overpressure in saline lacustrine basins. This paper investigated the effect of salts on formation overpressure based on organic geochemistry, rock mineralogy, logging curve comparison and wave velocity-density cross-plot by combining the sedimentary and structural background. In the Western Qaidam Basin, the proportion of abnormally high pressures rises from the Neogene to the Paleogene. The top surface of the overpressure is between 2300 and 2500 m deep. As the subsidence and sedimentary centers of the basin moved eastward, the centers of the overpressure migrated from west to east. In the Upper Oligocene, the overpressure is developed in the deep and semi-deep lacustrine facies, and the pressure coefficient is 1.8–2.0. Disequilibrium compaction is the primary control factor with a contribution rate of more than 60% in the intersalt and subsalt strata, followed by tectonic compression with a contribution rate of 20–30%. Fracture reducing by salt filling and fluid volume expanding by gypsum dehydration increase the fluid volume in the formation, which promotes formation overpressure. The gypsum salt rocks also have strong plasticity and sealing effect, thus providing a closed environment for the formation overpressure. Through providing the primary migration driven force and sealing conditions for oil and gas, the overpressure is meaningful to petroleum accumulation and preservation in saline lacustrine formation of the Paleogene and Neogene in the Western Qaidam Basin, NW China.

Abstract:Unconventional natural gas in deep coal measures has become an exploration and research hotspot in recent years. The exploration breakthrough of deep coalbed methane and tight sandstone gas in Daning-Jixian Block in the eastern Ordos Basin has revealed huge resource potential and commercial prospects in the deep Upper Paleozoic Carboniferous-Permian coal measures. However, the ambiguity of gas accumulation in deep coal measures has restricted exploration and development. Based on a series of tests for fluid inclusions, including petrographic observation, Raman spectroscopy analysis, and microthermometry, combined with the burial-thermal evolution history recovered from basin modeling, this study aims to clarify the timing of gas accumulation in deep coal measures. The results show four types of secondary fluid inclusions in the deep coal measure sandstone layers of Daning-Jixian Block, including CH 4 -rich inclusions, C 2+ hydrocarbons-bearing inclusions, CO 2 -bearing inclusions, and aqueous inclusions. The main formation stage of fluid inclusions corresponded to the mesodiagenesis stage of the deep coal measure sandstone, and the coeval assemblages of fluid inclusions vary due to the recording of gas charging in different maturity stages of coal measure source rocks. This study suggests that tight sandstone gas accumulation in deep coal measures was a continuous charging process with one period-multiple episodes in Daning-Jixian Block, and occurred mainly during the Early Cretaceous (137–127 Ma BP). The results of this study contribute to further understanding of gas accumulation mechanisms in deep coal measures.

Abstract:Strong overpressure conditions are widely distributed in the deep Longmaxi Formation (Fm) shale reservoirs in the Southern Sichuan Basin, with pressure coefficients ranging from 1.75 to 2.45. Overpressure plays a positive role in the high yield of shale gas, but a detailed study of its generation mechanism, evolution history, and potential impact on pore development is still lacking. This study's evidence from theoretical analysis and the logging response method indicates that hydrocarbon generation expansion is the main generation mechanism for strong overpressure. Through the combined analysis of basin modeling, inclusions analysis, and numerical simulation, pressure evolution at different stages is quantitatively characterized. The results show that, during the shale's long-term subsidence process, the shale reservoir's pressure coefficient increased to 1.40 because of oil generated by kerogen pyrolysis. Then it increased to 1.92 due to gas generated by residual oil cracking. During the late strong uplift process of the shale, temperature decrease, gas escape, and stratum denudation caused the pressure coefficient to first decrease to 1.84 and then increased to 2.04. Comparing pore characteristics under different pressure coefficients indicates that higher pressure coefficients within shale reservoirs contribute to the maintenance of total porosity and the development of organic macropores, but the influence on the morphology of organic pores is negligible. These results will provide the scientific basis for optimizing sweet spots and guiding shale gas exploration in the study area.
