Abstract:Mantle plume rich in gold is considered to be important for the formation of giant epigenetic gold deposits. The Youjiang ba-sin, SW China, is the world's second largest Carlin-type gold province, but the ultimate source of its gold remains enigmatic. In this study, we report that the Middle-Late Permian basaltic rocks in the basin are rich in native gold grains. These gold grains are scattered in the interstices of pyrite and mar-casite and in the amorphous silica cavities. Mineralogy and S-Pb isotope geochemistry of the auriferous sulfides suggest that the gold was largely derived from the gold-rich Late Permian (ca. 260 Ma) Emeishan plume and was released to a near-surface volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) metallogenic system, where it accumulated. The native gold grains from the basalts may have been inherited by the younger (ca. 140 Ma) Carlin-type ores in the Youjiang basin, which are indicative of gold pre-enrichment in the basin. Our study highlights that golden plume upwelling could carry abundant gold into the upper crust, even into shallow-level metallogenic systems, and thus provides an alternative view on the source of gold in the Youjiang basin.

Abstract:Carlin-type gold mineralization represents one of the world’s most important Au resources. Despite the many studies conducted in the past three decades, the gold sources and metallogenic dynamics remain enigmatic. Here, we report actively forming auriferous mounds and sulfide concretions from the Middle-Upper Permian basalt-dominated submarine volcanic-sedimentary rocks within the Carlin-style gold deposits, Youjiang basin, China. The volcanic-sedimentary rocks consist of basalt, tuff, scoria, black ash and metalliferous sediments in an unaltered sequence, which overlies the Middle Permian Maokou Formation and underlines by the Upper Permian strata. In this paper, we investigate the native gold nanoparticles in the volcanic-sedimentary rocks, and provide new insight into a new type of Au mineralization in the Youjiang basin. We unravel the mineralogy, trace elements and sulfur isotope compositions of these native gold and associated sulfides (e.g., marcasite and pyrite) via EPMA, in-situ LA-ICP-MS and NanoSIMS analyses. Petrographic obsevations show that native gold grains are present in marcasite microfractures, with sizes of 1 to 5 μm. The marcasites is interpreted to be of sedimentary exhalative (SEDEX) origin, as they are hosted by sulfide concretions comprising of sulfide-rich aggregates, quartz, barite, and basaltic tuff fragments. The EPMA elemental mapping suggests that the native gold grains have high contents of Hg, Cu, Zn and Sb, an ore elements assemblage common in typical Carlin-type Au mineralization (Au-As-Hg-Sb±Cu±Zn). LA-ICP-MS analysis shows the Au0-bearing marcasite is featured by lower Co/Ni ratios (avg. = 0.12), relatively high Ti (mostly 39–890 ppm, some > 10000 ppm) and low Cu (1–32 ppm), As (1–920 ppm), Zn (0–5 ppm) and Au (0–0.53 ppm) contents. The low Co/Ni ratios and elevated Ti contents suggest that the marcasite was likely sedimentary and/or diagenetic process, which associated with high-Ti Emeishan basalt eruption in Middle-Late Permian. NanoSIMS analysis shows that the marcasite δ34S varies from 20.30‰ to 34.29‰ (avg. = 25.86‰), indicating that thermochemical sulfate reduction (TSR) may have provided the sulfur under open system for sulfate but close for H2S. Overall, this paper proposed that (1) the Middle-Upper Permian volcanic-sedimentary rocks enriched in Au-Sb-Hg±Cu±Zn probably formed the source-bed for the Carlin-gold mineralization in Yanshanian (~140 Ma); (2) significant amounts of gold can occur in the basalt-dominated SEDEX environment. In addition, the genetic relationship between Emeishan plume and Carlin-type gold mineralization is also discussed in this paper. Based on previous studies, the juvenile lower crust beneath the eastern Emeishan large igneous province (LIP) may have been a potential Au source, and the associated mantle underplating may have contributed to the formation of Carlin-style Au deposits. Therefore, we propose a possible genetic link between the Carlin-type mineralization and Emeishan LIP magmatism in the Youjiang basin. Our findings offer a new exploration target which is unaltered volcanic-sedimentary rocks in the Youjing basin, may have been a source of gold for the large-scale Carlin-style gold mineralization in Yanshanian (~140 Ma), and demonstrate that significant amounts of gold can occur in a basalt-dominated SEDEX environment.
Texture and geochemistry of pyrite from the Jinya, Nakuang and Gaolong gold deposits in the Youjiang Basin: implications for basin-scale gold mineralization

Abstract:To understand the controls of basin paleogeographic evolution on sediment-hosted gold metallogenesis, a study was undertaken of pyrite texture and geochemistry of the Jinya, Nakuang, and Gaolong gold deposits in the Youjiang Basin, SW China. Syn-sedimentary/diagenetic pyrite and three generations of hydrothermal pyrite (As-Au-poor core, anomalously As-rich but Au-poor mantle, and As-Au-rich rim) are defined in the three gold deposits. The syn-sedimentary/diagenetic pyrites deposited in the basin facies at Jinya and slope facies around platforms at Gaolong have δ34S values of –3.4 ‰ to + 7.3 ‰ and + 14.8 ‰ to + 16.1 ‰, respectively. Compared to As-Au-poor pyrite with abundant fine-grained galena inclusions and high-radiogenic Pb isotopic ratios, the As-Au-rich pyrite shows a ~ 2–3 ‰ increase in average δ34S values (Jinya: –5.9 ‰; Nakuang: –7.6 ‰; Gaolong: + 12.2 ‰) towards those of syn-sedimentary/diagenetic pyrite and a decrease in average Pb isotopic ratios. These phenomena can be explained by the interaction of ore fluids with the pyritic sedimentary host rocks. A regional feature of the Youjiang Basin is that most of the gold deposits share similar pyrite textures and trace element compositions. However, the δ34S values of auriferous pyrite range from –9 ‰ to –5 ‰, –5 ‰ to + 5 ‰, and + 5 ‰ to + 19 ‰ in these gold deposits with host rocks deposited in the basin facies, open platforms, and slope facies around platforms, respectively. Thus, it is demonstrated that the sulfur isotope compositions of auriferous pyrite were mostly determined by the syn-sedimentary/diagenetic pyrite formed under different sedimentary facies.

Abstract:The Huangjindong gold deposit in northeastern Hunan is one of the most representative gold deposits in the Jiangnan Orogenic Belt. The orebodies are mainly hosted in the Neoproterozoic Lengjiaxi Group, which comprises carbonaceous slates. Abundant carbonaceous material (CM) can be found in the host rocks and ore-bearing quartz veins, but its geological characteristics and genesis, as well as its association with gold mineralization, are still unclear. Systematic petrographic observation demonstrated two types of CM in host rocks and ores, i.e., CM1 and CM2. Among them, CM1 is the predominant type and mainly occurs in the layered carbonaceous slates, while CM2 is mostly present in quartz veins and mineralized host rocks. Laser Raman spectroscopic analyses of CM1 were performed at higher temperatures (376–504 °C), and CM2 was generated at similar temperatures (255–435 °C) to gold mineralization. Combined with previous studies, we can conclude that CM1 was produced by Neoproterozoic to early Paleozoic metamorphism before gold mineralization, while CM2 is of hydrothermal origin. Geochemical modeling indicates that CM1 could promote gold precipitation through reduction, as well as facilitate structure deformation and metal absorption as previously proposed. However, hydrothermal CM2 is favorable for gold mineralization because it triggers sulfidation, similar to other Fe-bearing minerals (such as siderite) in the host rocks. Consequently, both types of CM in the Huangjindong deposit are favorable for gold mineralization and carbonaceous slates could be important gold-bearing units for future ore prospecting in the Jiangnan Orogen as well as other places in South China.

Abstract:The Tanjianshan goldfield is the most important gold producer in the North Qaidam, NW China. Genesis of gold deposits in Tanjianshan is enigmatic, primarily because of uncertainties as to timing, mineralization processes and fluid sources. We investigate these uncertainties through a comprehensive study of the texture and geochemistry (LA-MC-ICPMS trace elements and sulfur isotopes) of pyrite and in-situ U-Pb dating of monazite from the Qinglonggou gold deposit. Six types of pyrite with distinct textures, trace element contents and sulfur isotopes have been identified, and provide constraints on two overprinting gold-related hydrothermal events. Stage I consists of Py1, occurring as veinlets parallel to S1 deformation in a schist, is characterized by extremely low Co/Ni ratios with high contents of Ni, and high δ34S values (+14.9 ‰ to +16.1 ‰), and were likely derived from metamorphism of the sedimentary strata in the Tanjianshan and Wandonggou Group. In stage II, Py2 occurs in the pyrite-quartz veins that cut Py1 veinlets. They have similar δ34S (+13.1 ‰ to +17.8 ‰) to Py1, indicating that sulfur was likely derived from the dissolution of Py1. The stage I and II veins formed during an early gold pre-concentration event, which is constrained at 429.1 ± 5.9 Ma by in-situ U-Pb dating of monazite that coexists with Py1. Stage III includes Py3 and Py4 which occur in the altered carbonaceous schist and accompanying quartz veins. Trace metals are highest in Py3 (Ag, Au, Sb, and Bi) which represent the most economic ore stage in the deposit, whereas the following Py4 shows low concentrations of most trace elements due to abundant Py3 precipitation. In contrast, trace elements contents increase in Py5 to similar levels as those seen in Py3, suggesting a new pulse of fluid in stage IV. Minor Py6 grains precipitated in the youngest quartz-calcite veins associated with stage V, and contain low concentrations of trace elements. The δ34S values of Py3 (+5.2 ‰ to +6.0 ‰) and Py4 (+4.2 ‰ to +6.1 ‰) are within the range of magmatic sulfur, suggesting a dominantly magmatic source. The δ34S values increase from Py3-4 to Py5 (+6.3 ‰ to +7.4 ‰), and to Py6 (+8.7 ‰ to +9.6 ‰), probably due to increasing contribution from the host rocks, as well as decreasing fO2, through incremental fluid-rock interaction. Stages III and IV represent a late gold-mineralizing event during Late Paleozoic to Early Mesozoic, while stage V is post-mineralization. The overprinting gold pre-concentration and mineralization events in the Tanjianshan goldfield correspond to orogenic evolution of the Proto-Tethys Ocean and Paleo-Tethys Ocean, respectively.

Abstract:Lode gold deposits in the North China Craton (NCC) form the only known giant late Mesozoic gold province in the world’s Precambrian cratons. Understanding the ore genesis for these deposits is of great scientific and economic importance. In order to provide constraints on the ore-forming processes, this study presents a combination of micro-textures and in-situ compositions of sulfide from the Wulong gold deposit (80 t @ 5.35 g/t Au; 127–122 Ma), northeastern NCC. Five sub-generations of pyrite (Py1–Py5) are identified based on micro-textural observations and EPMA results. In-situ trace elemental concentrations show that pyrite from the stage 1 (Py1) has high Co and Ni contents but no Au (<0.02 ppm). In contrast, euhedral Py2 and porous Py3 from stage 2 exhibit much higher Au (average 3.08 ppm and 1.66 ppm), As (average 1400 ppm and 946 ppm), and Ag (average 2.81 ppm and 3.21 ppm). Anhedral Py4 from stage 3 shows lower Au (average 0.31 ppm) and As (average 337 ppm) concentrations when compared to Py3. However, Py5 from stage 3 exhibits significant increases of As (average 7102 ppm) and Au (average 5.46 ppm) again and is featured by the alternation of Co-Ni- and Au-As-rich zones. Other sulfides, including pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite, are poor in Au and As. Apart from visible gold grains related to Bi-rich melts, LA-ICP-MS spot and mapping analyses reveal that invisible gold hosted in Py2 to Py5 occurs dominantly as lattice-bound solid solutions (Au+). Direct gold precipitation from anomalously As-rich auriferous fluids induced by fluid immiscibility is proposed as the dominant mechanism of invisible gold enrichment. In-situ δ 34S values of Py1 to Py4 exhibit narrow ranges of 1.0 to 3.8 ‰, indicating a deep-seated magmatic sulfur source. The elevated δ 34S values (2.3–6.3 ‰) of Py5 are ascribed to some wall-rock contributions during fluid-rock interaction. These findings shed new light on the link between multistage fluid immiscibility and the chemical and micro-textural fingerprints of pyrites and the role of fluid immiscibility in the deposition of invisible gold.

Abstract:Debate over the origins of ore-forming fluids and metal accumulation in Carlin-type gold (Au) deposits has hampered the development of genetic models for such deposits. Youjiang Basin in southwest China contains Carlin-type deposits, including the Nibao, Banqi, and Yata deposits in Guizhou, and the Gaolong and Jinya deposits in Guangxi, but there has been little study of the relationships between these deposits, and the origins of the ore-forming fluids and metals remain enigmatic. We conducted in situ laser ablation multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS) sulfur (S) isotope analyses of different stages of pyrite and arsenopyrite to improve our understanding of the sources and genesis of the deposits. Average delta S-34 values for ore-stage pyrite in the Nibao, Banqi, Yata, Gaolong, and Jinya deposits are -0.05 parts per thousand, +4.04 parts per thousand, +7.02 parts per thousand, +11.51 parts per thousand, and -3.80 parts per thousand, respectively, and those of ore-stage arsenopyrite in the Banqi, Gaolong, and Jinya deposits are +7.33 parts per thousand, +10.92 parts per thousand, and -3.84 parts per thousand, respectively. Average delta S-34 values of sedimentary-diagenetic (i.e., pre-ore) stage pyrite in the Gaolong and Nibao deposits are -6.41 parts per thousand and -15.61 parts per thousand, respectively. Two source end-members contribute delta S-34 values of similar to 0 parts per thousand, which are deep metamorphic fluids and volcaniclastic rocks in the Nibao deposit, and delta S-34 values of greater than +10 parts per thousand are from mixed basinal fluids or marine sulfates in the Gaolong deposit. The Yata and Banqi deposits are intermediate between the other two deposits. The delta 34S values of ore-stage pyrite increase from northwestern platforms to southeastern basins, with this trend also occurring in other Carlin-type deposits in Youjiang Basin. The sources of S and Au were deep Proterozoic metamorphic basement rocks, which were mixed with a sedimentary source. We propose a genetic model for these Carlin-type Au deposits based on a deep metamorphic-hydrothermal fluid system, with the initial ore-forming fluid generated by the Indosinian or Yanshanian orogenies. Ascending fluids mixed with deeply circulating meteoric waters and/or basinal fluids and reacted with wall-rocks in the shallow crust to form the Au deposits. This study confirms that in situ S isotope analysis is effective for investigating ore genesis and assisting in exploration for new ore fields.
Genetic linkage between carbonaceous materials and Triassic gold deposits in the Liaodong Peninsula, northeastern North China Craton: Insights from Raman spectroscopy and CO isotope analysis

Abstract:The Qingchengzi gold ore-concentration district, in the Liaodong Peninsula, northeastern North China Craton, is dominated by altered rock-type gold deposits and hosted within metamorphic rocks of the Paleoproterozoic Liaohe Group. The deposits are mainly controlled by a low-angle, north-dipping thrust structural system, containing numerous carbonaceous materials (CMs) and syn-deformational ore-bearing quartz veins and adjacent clastic rocks. Raman spectroscopy and CO isotope analysis were performed on CM samples from the fault zone to decipher their possible origins and potential genetic links with gold mineralization. Raman spectra analysis distinguishes three types of CM with low (CML), medium (CMM) and high (CMH) crystallinity and maturity. The estimated Raman-derived temperatures of CML range from 308 °C to 401 °C corresponding to greenschist- to blueschist-facies metamorphism. Large temperature variations of 363–678 °C for CMM and 442–664 °C for CMH suggest higher metamorphic grades from low blueschist to amphibolite-facies. The organic carbon isotopic valuess (δ13Corg = -20.9 ‰ – –23.1 ‰) suggest an organic carbon source, mixing with carbonate wall rocks characterized by the δ13Ccarb of −1.92 ‰ to −6.22 ‰. Combined with the Raman spectrum, the CMs are formed by the demethanation of the organic matter during the greenschist- to amphibolite-facies metamorphism. The disseminated CML coexists with Au-bearing quartz veins and is inferred to have facilitated the migration of Au in the fault zone as a solid lubricant and the precipitation of Au from hydrothermal fluids as a reductant. CMM and CMH are recognized in medium- to high-grade metamorphism with higher temperatures and occur with fewer Au-bearing pyrite or quartz veins, and thus they are unrelated to gold mineralization. In summary, the disseminated CML with low crystallinity contributes to the formation of the Triassic gold deposits and serves as a potential indicator for further prospecting.

Sulfur isotopes of lamprophyres and implications for the control of metasomatized lithospheric mantle on the giant Jiaodong gold deposits, eastern China

Abstract:The giant Jiaodong gold deposits represent one of the largest gold provinces (>5000 tons of Au) in the North China Craton of eastern China. They formed ∼1.7 b.y. after high-grade metamorphism of the crust. The metasomatized subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) has been increasingly proposed as the main source of such gold mineralization, but the direct geochemical links remain scarce. Here, we present a comprehensive δ34S dataset of sulfides from fresh lamprophyres (130−121 Ma) that formed from the metasomatized SCLM that is spatially and temporally associated with the Jiaodong gold deposits (ca. 120 Ma). Due to the negligible effects of crustal contamination and magmatic degassing, the consistently high δ34S (4‰−6‰, n = 73) of lamprophyres from variable localities reveals δ34S-enriched mantle sources relative to the asthenospheric mantle (−1.3‰ ± 0.3‰). Combined with the radiogenic Sr-Nd-Pb isotope signatures of these lamprophyres, we determined that such high δ34S signatures could have resulted from a period of mantle metasomatism related to subducted continental materials. The lamprophyres share δ34S (4.4‰ ± 0.8‰) and Sr-Nd-Pb isotopes with coeval gold-mineralized diorites (ca. 120 Ma) beneath the ore field (δ34S: 5.4‰ ± 2.5‰), which were interpreted to have sampled the magma chamber underlying the auriferous fluid systems. The lamprophyres and diorites consistently indicate the key control of metasomatized SCLM, although these mantle-derived magmas followed different pathways from source to crust. These relatively primitive and evolved magmas all show S and Pb isotopes similar to ore-related sulfides from the Jiaodong gold deposits, particularly those formed in the deep parts and at the early stage of the Jiaodong auriferous fluid system (δ34S: 5‰−7‰). Such results suggest that the primary auriferous fluids are genetically linked to the magmas derived from the metasomatized SCLM. Combined with radiogenic isotopes, our study on the sulfur isotopes of mantle-derived magmas identifies the metasomatized mantle source of the gold and provides new evidence for establishing a geochemical link between metasomatized SCLM, derivative magmas, and the giant gold deposits, supporting the model that subduction-related metasomatism plays a key role in the enrichment of volatiles and gold in the SCLM for large-scale gold mineralization.

Abstract:The Dian-Qian-Gui “Golden Triangle” area of Southwest China hosts a large number of Au deposits. However, the sources of the ore-forming fluids are still controversial, hampering the formulation of a sound genetic model and effective ore prospecting. Here we investigate the sources of ore-forming fluids by an integrated study of in-situ sulfur isotope analyses and available trace element (e.g., Co and Ni) data for the pyrite in the “Golden Triangle” area. We find that the ore stage pyrites are featured by low Co/Ni ratios (mostly < 2), which is distinct from pyrite formed in magmatic-hydrothermal systems but resemble typical sedimentary pyrite. In addition, the significant variation (from −7.5 to +20.0‰) in sulfur isotopes (δ 34S) of the ore stage pyrite in these deposits also support a sedimentary origin of the ore-forming fluids. Considering the difference in sulfur isotopic compositions of ore-stage pyrite and the sedimentary host rocks, we suggest the metasedimentary basement rocks (>500 Ma) in the area may have supplied most of the sulfur and gold for the ore-forming fluids during the Triassic orogenesis in the Dian-Qian-Gui “Golden Triangle” area of Southwest China.

Abstract:Abstract Mineralogical distribution, textures, electron probe microanalysis of visible gold, laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) trace element analysis of pyrite, and LA-multicollector (MC-)ICP-MS sulfur isotope analysis of sulfide minerals are examined in an ore zone extending obliquely to –4 km depth in the Sanshandao gold deposit Jiaodong, China. We relate these results to the temporal and spatial ore-forming processes in the deposit to further elucidate the controls on the deposition of visible Au and fineness variation. Two generations of Au mineralization are identified. The early generation is represented by beresitization and quartz-pyrite veins in which visible Au grains are associated with pyrite (Py1 and Py2) and are characterized by high fineness [729–961; fineness = 1000×Au/(Au+Ag)]. Py1 and Py2 are both enriched in Co, Ni, and Bi and depleted in As and Au. Texturally, gold and pyrite are pristine crystals, homogeneous in composition. These features are attributed to the sulfidation of the granitic wallrock (fluid/rock interaction) that effectively destabilizes Au in the ore-forming fluids during pyrite deposition. Fineness decreases continuously from 870 at –2650 m depth to 752 at –420 m depth. The Co and Ni contents of Py1 and Py2 decrease significantly from –4000 m to –420 m depth, whereas the As contents increase. The mean δ34S values of Py1 increase from 10.5 to 11.8‰. The spatial variations are interpreted to be related to gradual cooling, decompression, and an enhanced degree of fluid/rock interaction with decreasing depth, which facilitated the initiation of visible gold mineralization at ca. –2700 m depth. The late generation of Au mineralization is represented by quartz-polysulfide veins in which visible Au grains are associated with multiple sulfide minerals (Py3, galena, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, and sphalerite). It is characterized by low fineness (549–719), and heterogeneous textures with Ag-rich parts (218–421). Py3, occurring as the rim of pyrite grain, is interpreted to form by replacement via a dissolution-reprecipitation reaction. Py3 is distinctly enriched in As (median of 10 000 ppm) and Au (2.2 ppm), but depleted in Co, Ni, and Bi. The δ34S values of the polysulfide minerals decrease sharply by 4 to 5‰ at depths from –1909 to –1450 m. These features are interpreted to be generated by significant decompression and phase separation of fluid, where most ore elements (e.g., Au, Ag, As, and base metal elements) are destabilized. Our study suggests that remobilization did not affect the generation of visible Au mineralization at Sanshandao.

Abstract:The Shuangqishan Au deposit lies in the Dehua-Youxi-Yongtai Au metallogenic belt in central eastern Fujian Province, SE China. The orebodies are hosted mainly in the Neoproterozoic Dalingyan Formation. Based on the characteristics of mineralization, alteration mineral assemblages, fluid inclusions, and H-O-C-S-Pb isotopic data, the deposit is classified as a granitoid-related deposit. The primary metallic minerals are native gold, electrum, pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena, tellurbimuth, and tetradymite; the main gangue minerals are quartz, calcite, sericite, and illite. The main types of wall-rock alteration are silicification, pyritization, carbonatization, and sericitization. Fluid inclusions in quartz from auriferous polymetallic sulfide-bearing quartz veins from the main ore stage were studied. Two-phase liquid-rich (type I), CO2-rich (type II), and pure CO2 (type III) inclusions were identified. Their homogenization temperatures (196 degrees C-295 degrees C) and salinities (0.8-5.0 wt% NaCl equivalent) indicate that the ore-forming fluids of the Shuangqishan deposit were of a medium-temperature, low-salinity H2O-CO2-NaCl system. Gold deposition at Shuangqishan was likely caused by immiscibility of fluids. H isotopic compositions (delta D-H2O = -68.0 parts per thousand to -64.8 parts per thousand) of inclusion water in quartz and O isotopic compositions (delta O-18(H2O) = 3.8 parts per thousand to 6.3 parts per thousand) of fiuid, which was calculated from delta O-18 of quartz, imply that ore-forming fluids were mainly of magmatic origin. C isotopic compositions (delta C-18(PDB) = -15.7 parts per thousand to -5.7 parts per thousand) of the fluid inclusions indicate that the CO2 in the ore-forming fluids was predominantly magma-derived, but was contaminated by organic carbon from the Neoproterozoic Dalingyan Formation. delta S-34 values of sulfide minerals have a narrow range of -2.7 parts per thousand to -0.9 parts per thousand, suggesting that S was derived from a homogeneous magmatic source. Pb isotopic ratios of gold-bearing ores are similar to those of late Mesozoic granodiorite porphyry of the Xianyang pluton, indicating that the granodiorite porphyry was the source of Pb for the ores.

Abstract:The Tianshan hosts numerous giant and world-class lode gold deposits, forming one of the world's largest gold provinces. However, the sources of gold remain equivocal. Herein, we present a comprehensive Pb isotopic investigation of the Precambrian basement, Neoproterozoic mafic dykes, and the Lower Paleozoic sequences of the South Tianshan in NW China. These data were compared with existing Pb isotope datasets from major lode gold deposits and coeval granitoid and mantle-related rocks, to trace the sources of gold and constrain the relative contributions from potential reservoirs. Gold-bearing sulfides from major lode gold deposits have relatively uniform Pb isotopic ratios, which are significantly different from regional coeval granitoid and mantle-related rocks. Conversely, the Pb isotopic characteristics from gold-bearing sulfides are comparable to those from the Paleoproterozoic metasedimentary rocks, showing well-defined linear relations. Binary mixing modeling shows that the Paleoproterozoic metasedimentary rocks might have contributed 70% to 90% for the source of Pb and, by inference other metals. Integrating geochemical and isotopic features from major lode gold deposits in the region, we propose that it invokes fertilization of ancient Au archives during metamorphic volatilization in the deep crust during subduction of the South Tianshan Ocean. Following the final closure of the South Tianshan Ocean, the regional tectonic uplift and thermal effect during widespread granitoids emplacement associated with the amalgamation of the Tarim with Kazakhstan-Yili terranes, mobilizing the deep roots of the fertilized ancient Au reservoirs, leading to the formation of the gold deposit hosted in fault systems of the South Tianshan.

Abstract:Gold deposits are characteristically formed via multiple mineralization and remobilization events. Inferences on the complex formation history of such deposits from ore textures can be ambiguous in the lack of chemical and isotopic evidence as exemplified by the Shuangqishan orogenic gold deposit in Southeast China. We, therefore, conducted LA-ICP-MS spot analysis coupled with LA-MC-ICP-MS sulfur and lead isotope analysis on texturally complex gold-bearing pyrite from the Shuangqishan deposit. Gold distribution in different syn-to late-ore pyrite generations indicate initial evenly deposition of nano-to micro-inclusions of Au-Ag-Pb-Bi tellurides within pyrite grains and subsequent Au remobilization following brittle deformation and fluid-mediated coupled dissolution-reprecipitation (CDR) reactions. Gold dissolved from the pyrite during the reworking event became re-concentrated and re-precipitated as visible gold either as inclusions in pyrite or larger free gold grains within microfractures of pyrite. The distribution of Bi-Te-Pb-Ag assemblage is comparable to that of Au, illustrating that these trace metals became redistributed in a similar fashion. Early, undeformed pyrite has the least radiogenic Pb isotopic compositions. Late, porous and inclusion-rich pyrite, brecciated pyrite, and recrystallized Te-Bi minerals have variable but in general more radiogenic Pb isotope ratios (higher Pb-206/Pb-204 and Pb-207/Pb-204 ratios), which are attributed to modification and precipitation from a more evolved crustal fluid during the re-precipitation of native gold. The Pb isotopic signature of the younger pyrite generations was likely inherited from Pb released during modification of earlier proto-pyrite and a second, crustal lead source that was involved in the hydrothermal system during later remobilization. The delta S-34 values for the early proto-pyrite and the reworked pyrite generations within the individual vein stage are broadly similar. The variations in sulfur isotope compositions reflect the change in physicochemical conditions (temperature and oxygen fugacity) during proto-ore formation. Our study highlights the importance of metal recycling from early proto-auriferous pyrite during later reworking and gold remobilization, which led to visible gold and high-grade ore shoot formation. The extensive variations of trace element concentrations and S-Pb isotope compositions of proto and reworked pyrites record the complicated Au mobilization and deposition processes and help to understand how gold ores evolved.
Genesis of the Ancun Epithermal Gold Deposit, Southeast China: Evidence from Fluid Inclusion and Stable Isotope Data

Abstract:The Ancun gold deposit is located in the Dehua-Youxi-Yongtai ore region of Fujian Province, southeast China. The orebodies are mainly hosted in early Paleozoic quartz diorite and structurally controlled alteration zones along NW- and NE-trending faults. Based on the characteristics of mineralization, alteration mineral assemblages, fluid inclusions, and H-O-S isotope data, the Ancun gold deposit can be classified as an intermediate-sulfidation epithermal deposit The primary metallic minerals are gold, electrum, pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and galena, and the principal gangue minerals are quartz, calcite, sericite, and illite. The main types of wall rock alteration include sericitization, argillization, silicification, beresitization, and carbonation. Fluid inclusion studies were carried out on quartz and sphalerite from Au-bearing silicified massive ores and auriferous poly metallic-sulfide-bearing quartz veins from the main ore stage. Microthermometric measurements of fluid inclusions yielded homogenization temperatures (T-h) of 152-255 degrees C and salinities of 0.9-5.3 wt% NaCl equivalent in quartz, and T-h of 175-236 degrees C and salinities of 1.6-5.0 wt% NaCl equivalent in sphalerite. The low to moderate temperatures and salinities imply that the ore-forming fluids formed in epithermal environments. Gold deposition at Ancun is inferred to have been caused mainly by mixing of magmatic and diluted meteoric waters. The H and O isotopic compositions (delta D-H2O = -76.4 parts per thousand to -61.2 parts per thousand; delta O-18(H2O) = -6.1 parts per thousand to 4.0 parts per thousand) of inclusion water in quartz imply that ore-forming fluids were derived mainly from magmatic sources. Sulfur isotopic values of sulfide minerals vary over a narrow range from -3.9 parts per thousand to -0.6 parts per thousand, suggesting that S was derived from a homogeneous magmatic source. Based on the close temporal and spatial relationship between intermediate-sulfidation epithermal deposits and porphyry deposits, along with the alteration and mineralization characteristics of the Ancun gold deposit, potential exists in this region to drill into deeper-seated porphyry deposits.

Abstract:The Zhengchong gold deposit, with a gold reserve of 19 t, is located in the Liling Goldfield, central Jiangnan Orogen, Southern China. The orebodies are structurally bound by NW- and NNE-NE-trending faults, hosted in the Neoproterozoic slates. The ore styles primarily comprise auriferous pyrite-arsenopyrite-quartz vein, disseminated pyrite-arsenopyrite-sericite-quartz mineralized slate, and intense mineralized slate breccia. The gold-bearing sulfide-quartz veins have average Au grades up to 13.5 g/t, generally higher than that of mineralized rock in all orebodies of 0.6 - 2.0 g/t and intense mineralized breccia within quartz veins of 2.5 g/t - 4.0 g/t. Three primary and successive paragenetic sequences are identified: (i) Barren quartz - muscovite; (ii) Quartz - polymetallic sulfides - native gold - muscovite - minor chlorite; (iii) Barren quartz - calcite veins. Native gold has only been observed in the fractures of early barren quartz, pyrite and arsenopyrite in NW-trending auriferous veins. According to textural differences, five types of pyrite and four types of arsenopyrite are recognized from NW- and NNE-NE-trending orebodies.Based on LA-ICPMS spot and imaging analyses of different types of pyrites and arsenopyrites, the refractory, invisible gold in pyrites and arsenopyrites range from <1 to >500 ppm and was incorporated in these sulfides through substitution of As1- for S2- as the Au and As data plotting below the both gold solubility lines for Carlin and orogenic gold deposits. The invisible gold as the form of Au+ concentrates in sulfides. Besides, minor micro-scale gold with Cu-, Pb-, Sb-, Ag-, and Bi-minerals occur in the pores of pyrite and arsenopyrite. The initial ore-bearing fluid with abundant Si, S, Fe, As and minor Au, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Sb, Te, Pb, Bi reacting with Neoproterozoic slates to generate low-grade pyrite (Py-I and Py-III) in both-trending orebodies. For NNE-trending sulfide-quartz veins, cyclic fluid pressure dropping resulted fluid phase separation and destabilization of bisulphide-gold. Due to the small fluid flux in narrow NNE-trending faults, Au+ exhausted after the precipitation of high-grade Py-II, Apy-II and Au-rich rim of Py-I with invisible gold. In NW-trending auriferous quartz veins, hydrofracturing under high fluid pressure in thrust shear-faults, generated massive slate breccias. The sharply pressure decrease in dilations along the ore-controlling faults resulted in significant auriferous fluid phase separation and the solubility reducing of trace elements and gold, which in turn led in the deposition of native gold with chalcopyrite, sphalerite and tetrahedrite in fractures of Py-IV and Apy-III.

Abstract:The northeastern Hunan region in the Jiangnan Orogen (South China) is endowed with many important gold deposits, whose genesis remains controversial. The Xiaojiashan is a representative gold deposit (7.77 t Au @ 2.88 g/t) in NE Hunan, and is characterized by multi-stage pyrite formation. Its mineralization can be divided into 3 stages: (I) quartz-ankerite-pyrite-gold; (II) quartz-ankerite-polymetallic sulfide-gold; (III) quartz-ankerite stage. Three pyrite generations were identified: fine-grained porous Py1 and coarse-grained Py2 in stage I, and core-rim-textured Py3 in stage II. Py1 and Py2 are enriched in Co, Ni, Se and Te, but depleted in As and Au. Comparatively, Py3a and Py3b have higher As, Au, and Zn, but lower Co, Ni, Se and Te contents, indicating the compositional variations of ore-forming fluids from stage I to stage II. The Au- and As-poor Py1 and Py2 have similarly low δ34S values (Py1: −33.30 to − 16.23 ‰; and Py2: −25.41 to − 15.45 ‰), indicating that the sulfur of Py1 and Py2 may have been derived from metamorphism of sedimentary strata, such as Neoproterozoic Lengjiaxi Group. Meanwhile, both the core (Py3a) and rim (Py3b) of the Au-As-rich Py3 have high δ34S values (Py3a: −3.44 to − 1.72 ‰; and Py3b: −1.00 to − 0.99 ‰), resembling typical magmatic sulfur. The trace element compositions and sulfur isotopes of pyrite in stages I and II suggest a distinct shift of ore-forming fluids source from metamorphic (stage I) to magmatic (stage II). Therefore, we propose that the Xiaojiashan gold mineralization was likely associated with early metamorphism and late magmatic-hydrothermal overprinting, and its multistage and complex ore-forming process had recorded the complexity of gold mineralization in NE Hunan.

Abstract:The Xinjiazui gold deposit marks a notable significance in prospecting within the Back-Longmenshan tectonic belt, located on the northwest margin of the Yangtze Block, China. Despite the extensive studies conducted on this deposit, the source of the ore-forming materials remains unclear, leading to ongoing debates regarding the genesis of this deposit. This study analyzed in situ (EPMA and LA-ICP-MS) trace elements and S-Pb isotopes of arsenopyrite, solely from the principal metallogenic stage and paragenetic with native gold. The results show that the gold in arsenopyrite occurs as invisible gold (Au3+), with an average concentration of 9.38 ppm, whereas the concentrations of magma-related elements, such as W, Sn, Mo, and Bi, are very low. The sulfur isotopes (34S) of arsenopyrite range from 8.32‰ to 10.16‰, aligning closely with the deep metamorphic basement (Pt3l). Meanwhile, the lead isotopes in arsenopyrite display characteristics typical of those found in orogenic belts. A comprehensive analysis of the abundance of gold indicated that the metallogenic materials (sulfur and gold) primarily originated from Pt3l. Additionally, the arsenopyrite thermobarometer indicated that the Xinjiazui gold deposit formed in a medium–low-temperature, medium metallogenic environment (5.57–8.69 km), with a sulfur fugacity (log f (S2)) below −8.4. Combined with previous research results, this study proposes that the Xinjiazui gold deposit is a subduction-related mesozonal orogenic gold deposit. In gold prospecting and exploration in the Back-Longmenshan tectonic belt, it is essential to focus on the distribution of brittle-ductile shear zones and location of the quartz veins associated with pyrite and arsenopyrite mineralization.
