Abstract:A La2Ti2O7/graphene (GR) nanocomposite with intimate interfacial contact and a large contact area is synthesized by a facile electrostatic self-assembly approach. The nanocomposite is characterized by Xray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The La2Ti2O7/GR nanocomposite exhibits the highest H-2 production rate when used in photocatalytic water splitting, with an improvement of 5.7 and 4.9 times relative to pure La2Ti2O7 and La2Ti2O7/GR-H that was prepared without surface charge modification, respectively. In addition, the transient photocurrent responses and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results indicate that the La2Ti2O7/GR nanocomposite exhibits more effective separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and faster interfacial electron transfer compared to pure La2Ti2O7 nanosheets and the La2Ti2O7/GR-H nanocomposite. The enhanced photocatalytic H-2 production rate and photo-electrochemistry activity can be ascribed to the intimate interfacial contact and large contact area between the La2Ti2O7 nanosheets and GR, which help to make full use of the electron conductivity of GR for transferring photogenerated electrons, prolonging the lifetime of charge carriers and improving the rate of water splitting to form H-2.
Surface Ti3+/Ti4+ Redox Shuttle Enhancing Photocatalytic H-2 Production in Ultrathin Tio2 Nanosheets/Cdse Quantum Dots

Abstract:Constructing unique nanocomposites to facilitate charge transfer and promote catalytic activity provides a promising approach for enhancing solar-to-hydrogen efficiency. However, revealing the catalytic surface state and understanding their roles in the photocatalytic process remain elusive. Here, we develop a facile and mild solution method for ultrathin TiO2 nanosheets with a large specific surface area and enhanced surface Ti3+ accumulation. Moreover, we demonstrate a hybrid nanosystem composed of ultrathin 2D TiO2 nanosheets directly coupled with 0D CdSe QDs for hydrogen generation. The 0D CdSe QDs increase visible light absorption ability after being coupled with the TiO2 nanosheets. Owing to the synergistic effect between the quantum dots and nanosheets, the apparent quantum efficiency increases to 45% at 380 and 450 nm, and the H-2 evolution exhibits a 10-fold enhancement. EPR results indicate that the surface Ti3+ greatly promotes H free radical production due to the redox couple Ti3+/Ti4+ providing an efficient route for the photoexcited electron-hole separation. Our findings provide new insights toward understanding and exploiting highly efficient photocatalyst.
Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity of Sulfur-Doped Graphene Quantum Dots Decorated with TiO 2 Nanocomposites

Abstract:Sulfur-doped graphene quantum dots (S-GQDs) decorated with high-quantum-yield titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanocomposite are synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. Photoluminescence characterization shows that S-GQDs exhibit stronger absorption peaks at ultraviolet (UV) region than GQDs. Photocatalytic activity of the obtained S-GQD/TiO2 nanocomposite reaches 70% in 8 min; this activity is significantly enhanced compared with those of GQDs/TiO2 and pure TiO2. Improved UV light absorption and effective transfer of photogenerated electrons can be attributed to integration of S-GQDs with TiO2 in a cladding manner. The present work provides a new approach for development of attractive GQD-based nanocomposites with controllable structures and photocatalytic performance.
Engineering the Tio2-Graphene Interface to Enhance Photocatalytic H-2 Production

Abstract:In this work, TiO2-graphene nanocomposites are synthesized with tunable TiO2 crystal facets ({100}, {101}, and {001} facets) through an anion-assisted method. These three TiO2-graphene nanocomposites have similar particle sizes and surface areas; the only difference between them is the crystal facet exposed in TiO2 nanocrystals. UV/Vis spectra show that band structures of TiO2 nanocrystals and TiO2-graphene nanocomposites are dependent on the crystal facets. Time-resolved photoluminescence spectra suggest that the charge-transfer rate between {100} facets and graphene is approximately 1.4 times of that between {001} facets and graphene. Photoelectrochemical measurements also confirm that the charge-separation efficiency between TiO2 and graphene is greatly dependent on the crystal facets. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals that Ti-C bonds are formed between {100} facets and graphene, while {101} facets and {001} facets are connected with graphene mainly through Ti-O-C bonds. With Ti-C bonds between TiO2 and graphene, TiO2-100-G shows the fastest charge-transfer rate, leading to higher activity in photocatalytic H-2 production from methanol solution. TiO2-101-G with more reductive electrons and medium interfacial charge-transfer rate also shows good H-2 evolution rate. As a result of its disadvantageous electronic structure and interfacial connections, TiO2-001-G shows the lowest H-2 evolution rate. These results suggest that engineering the structures of the TiO2-graphene interface can be an effective strategy to achieve excellent photocatalytic performances.

Abstract:To develop an efficient photocatalyst for solar-to-hydrogen production is regarded as a promising approach to tackling the energy and environmental challenges we are currently facing. In this work, the TiO2-Cu2O nanocomposite was synthesized via a chemical reduction approach at ambient temperature and used as a photocatalyst. The composition and structure characterization indicated that Cu2O particles were loaded on the surface of TiO2 nanospheres. The photocatalytic performance of the as-obtained materials was evaluated by solar-to-hydrogen production test. It was found that the optimized TiO2-Cu2O nanocomposite (TC-20) exhibited a hydrogen evolution rate of 7139.02 μmol·g-1·h-1, which is nearly 7 times that of pristine TiO2. Based on the photoluminescence spectra and photo/electrochemical measurements, the boosted photocatalytic H2 evolution performance comes from the promoted separation efficiency promotion of photoinduced electron-hole pairs, which is originated from the formed p-n heterojunction of the TiO2-Cu2O nanocomposite.This article is protected by copyright. Synergistic material modification-induced optimization of interfacial charge transfer and surface hydrogen adsorption

Abstract:Being chemically stable, low cost and made from abundant resources, titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) possesses the most desired advantages for photocatalytic applications. However, the intrinsic limits of high surface hydrogen adsorption energy, wide band gap, low separation rate and rapid recombination of the photogenerated charge carriers greatly hamper its utilization. To address these issues, the present work combines density functional theory (DFT) calculations with rational modifications of TiO 2 with nickel doping and an ultra-thin shield of fluorinated carbon (FNT) for application in the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Comprehensive studies imply that the synergistic modifications not only optimize the surface H adsorption, but also facilitate the interfacial charge transfer and simultaneously prevent the photochemical and chemical corrosion of the catalysts. In good agreement with the theoretical predictions, the resulting FNT photocatalysts demonstrate an optimal HER efficiency of 13.0 mmol g −1 h −1 , nearly 33-times and over three-times beyond that of the pristine TiO 2 (0.4 mmol g −1 h −1 ) and the Ni-doped TiO 2 (4.2 mmol g −1 h −1 ), respectively. Moreover, the composite also exhibits excellent stability with a well-reproducible HER performance over a 66-hour cyclic HER test of 15 cycles.

Abstract:The hydrogen evolution activity of photocatalysts could be optimized by improving charge separation, light absorption capacity, and surface-active site number. In an attempt to engineer these critical factors in semiconductor photocatalytic processes, herein, we construct an active-site-rich 0D/1D Co3O4/TiO2 p-n hetero-junction by growing p-type Co3O4 nanoparticles onto the surface of n-type TiO2 porous fibers. The in situ-generated porous outer walls formed over the surface of TiO2 fibers can increase the accessible active sites and enhance the light capture capacity. The optimal 0D/1D Co3O4/TiO2 heterojunction exhibits the excellent H-2 evolving rate of 3.46 mmol g(-1)h(-1) and considerably higher stability than its counterparts, including TiO2 fibers, 2D/1D and 3D/1D Co3O4/TiO2 hybrids. The main reason for this eminent photocatalytic performance was due to the synergistic effect of the porous outer-walls of the TiO2 nanofibers, favourable intimate interface between Co3O4 and TiO2, built-in electric field induded by p-n heterojunction and the cocatalytic effect of Co3O4, which can create more active sites and lead to rapid charge carrier migration. This study provides an important guideline for designing surface-engineered heterostructures in photocatalytic applications.

Photogenerated Charge Separation and Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production of TiO2/Graphene Composite Materials

Abstract:Separation of photogenerated charges is one of the key steps in photocatalysis, whose efficiency largely determines the overall photocatalytic performance in water splitting. It is known that the formation of hybrid nanostructures is a promising solution to improve photocatalytic performance. However, the chemical environment difference during the synthesis of hybrid nanostructures may bring additional influencing factors to material systems. In this case, the design and synthesis of well-defined and clean samples are highly important to fundamental investigations. Integrating TiO2 nanosheets with graphene can enhance the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 through the effective separation of the photogenerated electrons and holes across the interface formed by C-O bonds. To investigate the influence of photogenerated charge separation on the photocatalytic performance of TiO2/graphene composites, we modulate the separation of the photogenerated charges by controlling the size and thickness of TiO2 nanosheets with the same chemical environment, which helps investigate its effect on the photocatalytic performance of TiO2/graphene composites. Specifically, a series of TiO2 nanosheets with different thickness are synthesized by controlling the amount of hydrofluoric acid and combined with graphene for photocatalytic hydrogen production. The hybrid nanostructures are formed through a simple and clean process so as to possess a reliable platform for evaluating the relationship between structural parameters and performance in photocatalytic hydrogen production. The experiment results show that the photocatalytic activity of TiO2/rGO composites increases with the reduction in the thickness of TiO2 nanosheets. As the thickness of TiO2 nanosheets decreases, the migration distance of the photo-excited electrons is reduced so as to effectively suppress the recombination of the photo-excited charges. In the meanwhile, the TiO2/graphene interface is enlarged to promote the separation of the photogenerated charges in TiO2. As a result, the utilization efficiency of the photogenerated charges has been substantially enhanced. This work demonstrates that modulating the separation of photogenerated charges in TiO2/graphene composites by controlling the size of TiO2 nanosheets is an effective strategy for improving the photocatalytic performance of TiO2/graphene composites.
Synergetic enhancement of surface reactions and charge separation over holey C3N4/TiO2 2D heterojunctions

Abstract:Efficient charge separation and rapid interfacial reaction kinetics are crucial factors that determine the efficiency of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Herein, a fascinating 2D heterojunction photocatalyst with superior photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance - holey C3N4 nanosheets nested with TiO2 nanocrystals (denoted as HCN/TiO2) - is designed and fabricated via an in situ exfoliation and conversion strategy. The HCN/TiO2 is found to exhibit an ultrathin 2D heteroarchitecture with intimate interfacial contact, highly porous structures and ultrasmall TiO2 nanocrystals, leading to drastically improved charge carrier separation, maximized active sites and the promotion of mass transport for photocatalysis. Consequently, the HCN/TiO2 delivers an impressive hydrogen production rate of 282.3 μmol h-1 per 10 mg under AM 1.5 illumination and an apparent quantum efficiency of 13.4% at a wavelength of 420 nm due to the synergetic enhancement of surface reactions and charge separation. The present work provides a promising strategy for developing high-performance 2D heterojunctions for clean energy applications.

Abstract:The photoelectronchemical (PEC) activity of the photocatalyst is largely dependent on the concentration and lifetime of the photogenerated carriers, however, these carriers are easily and quickly neutralized within the photocatalyst. To address this issue, we designed a superstructure of graphene-intercalated TiO 2 nanoparticles (TiO 2 /G) by pyrolyzing octylamine-intercalated hexafluorotitanic acid hybrids. The inserted graphene accelerates photoelectron transfer and reduces the recombination of photogenerated carriers in the body, while maintains the structural stability. The TiO 2 /G hybrid composite exhibits a low carbon content of only 1.3 wt.%, a strong Ti-C chemical interaction between TiO 2 and intercalated graphene, and a large surface area of 38.88 m 2 /g, nearly five times that of bare TiO 2 (7.96 m 2 /g). The findings from the photocatalytic experiments indicate that the photocatalytic efficiency and photocurrent response of TiO 2 /G are twice and 4.22 times higher, respectively, compared to standard TiO 2 nanoparticles. This indicates a substantial promise for the superstructure in photoelectrochemistry and energy conversion applications.

Interfacial Engineering Boosting Charge Extraction for Efficient Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:In heterostructure photocatalyst, metal-support interaction plays a key role in determining the photocatalytic reaction, which is rarely studied due to its complicated mechanism involving interfacial bonding, internal electric field, and charge transfer etc. Here we report an interfacial engineering to promote the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution of the model photocatalyst Pt/TiO2. A stable oxidized Cu+ layer was inserted as an interlayer between Pt nanoparticles and TiO2 support, which boosts the efficiency of photoinduced charge extraction and regulates the surface charge state of the photocatalyst. The synthesized photocatalyst Pt/Cu/TiO2 exhibits highly efficient hydrogen evolution of 1 L g(-1)h(- 1), which is 63% higher than the photocatalyst Pt/TiO2. This charge extraction strategy is also evidenced on photocatalysts Pt/(Rh, Co or Ni)/TiO2. Our findings not only provide insight into interfacial interaction in photocatalyst, but also offer effective guidelines for the design and fabrication of high-performance photocatalysts.
Enhanced Photocatalytic H-2-Production Activity of Graphene-Modified Titania Nanosheets

Abstract:Graphene-modified TiO(2) nanosheets with exposed (001) facets (graphene/TiO(2)) were prepared by microwave-hydrothermal treatment of graphene oxide (GO) and hydrothermally synthesized TiO(2) nanosheets with exposed (001) facets in an ethanol-water solvent. These nanocomposite samples showed high photocatalytic H(2)-production activity in aqueous solutions containing methanol, as sacrificial reagent, even without Pt co-catalyst. The optimal graphene content was found to be ∼1.0 wt%, giving a H(2)-production rate of 736 μmol h(-1) g(-1) with a quantum efficiency (QE) of 3.1%, which exceeded the rate observed on pure TiO(2) nanosheets by more than 41 times. This high photocatalytic H(2)-production activity is due to the deposition of TiO(2) nanosheets on graphene sheets, which act as an electron acceptor to efficiently separate the photogenerated charge carriers. The observed enhancement in the photocatalytic activity is due to the lower absolute potential of graphene/graphene˙(-) (-0.08 V vs. SHE, pH = 0) in comparison to the conduction band (-0.24 V) of anatase TiO(2), meanwhile the aforementioned absolute value is higher than the reduction potential of H(+) (0 V), which favors the electron transfer from the conduction band (CB) of TiO(2) to graphene sheets and the reduction of H(+), thus enhancing photocatalytic H(2)-production activity. The proposed mechanism for the observed photocatalytic performance of TiO(2) nanosheets, modified with a small amount of graphene, was further confirmed by photoluminescence spectroscopy and transient photocurrent response. This work not only shows a possibility for the utilization of low cost graphene sheets as a substitute for noble metals (such as Pt) in the photocatalytic H(2)-production but also for the first time shows a significant enhancement in the H(2)-production activity by using metal-free carbon material as an effective co-catalyst.
Surface domain heterojunction on rutile TiO2 for highly efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Abstract:Compared with the highly active anatase TiO2, rutile TiO2 usually presents poor photocatalytic performance due to high electron-hole recombination. Herein, we propose a surface domain heterojunction (SDH) structure between adjacent micro-domains with and without chemisorbed chlorine on rutile TiO2, which utilizes the potential difference between these domains to form a built-in field that promotes charge separation. Single-crystal rutile TiO2 nanorods assembled into radial microspheres with SDHs were fabricated, and these exhibited excellent solar-driven photocatalytic hydrogen evolution, similar to 8-fold higher than that of the pristine one. Experimental results and density functional theory calculations reveal that the exceptional photocatalytic performance can be attributed to the in situ formation of chemisorbed chlorine, which forms SDHs that separate electrons and holes efficiently and results in surface reconfiguration, exposing the tri-active sites, increasing the O-site active centers and enhancing the catalytic activity of the 4-coordinated (Ti-4c) and 5-coordinated Ti sites (Ti-5c). This SDH strategy can extend to other halogen elements and thus provides an universal approach for the rational design of high-efficiency TiO2 photocatalysts toward sustainable solar-fuel evolution.

Abstract:Monolayered Ti3C2O hybrid (001) TiO2 (Ti3C2O/(001) TiO2) photocatalyst was synthesized via a facile hydrothermal subsequent annealing method. The Schottky junction was constructed in situ by regulating surface functional groups, exposing highly active facets, and controlling structural dimension. Among the composite, monolayered Ti3C2O nanosheets acted as the electron reservoir to effectively separate the photogenerated electrons/holes. The exposure of the (001) facet largely improved the catalytic activity and surface energy of the TiO2 material. Through the well-planned triple modifications, the highest activity of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution is 13.63 times than the contrast. In this work, excellent photocatalytic material with Schottky junction was prepared by structural modification and in-situ oxidation of Ti3C2Tx (Mxene), which revealed considerable reference values for expanding the application scope and modification methods of Mxene material.

However, current strategies for designing and modifying efficient photocatalysts (which exhibit complicated manufacturing processes and harsh conditions) are not efficient for production that is low cost, is nontoxic, and exhibits good stability; and therefore restrict practical applications. Herein, a facile and reliable method is reported for in situ amine-containing silane coupling agent functionalization of commercial P25-TiO 2 by covalent surface modification for constructing a highly efficient photocatalyst. As a consequence, a high efficiency of H 2 evolution was achieved for TiO 2 -SDA with 0.95 mmol h −1 g −1 (AQE ∼45.6% at 365 nm) under solar light irradiation without a co-catalyst. The amination modification broadens the light absorption range of the photocatalyst, inhibits the binding of photogenerated carriers, and improves the photocatalytic efficiency; which was verified by photochemical properties and DFT theoretical calculations. This covalent modification method ensures the stability of the photocatalytic reaction. This work provides an approach for molecularly modified photocatalysts to improve photocatalytic performance by covalently modifying small molecules containing amine groups on the photocatalyst surface.

Abstract:Metal-containing nanocrystals with well-designed surface structures represent a class of model systems for revealing the fundamental physical and chemical processes involved in heterogeneous catalysis. Herein it is shown how surface modification can be utilized as an efficient strategy for controlling the surface electronic state of catalysts and, thus, for tuning their catalytic activity. As model catalysts, the Pd-tetrahedron-TiO2 nanostructures, modified on the surface with different foreign atoms, showed a varied activity in the catalytic decomposition of formic acid towards H2 production. The catalytic activity increases with a reduction in the work function of modified atoms; this reduction can be well explained by a surface polarization mechanism. In this hybrid system, the difference in the work functions of Pd and modified atoms results in surface polarization on the Pd surface and, thus, in the tuning of its charge state. Together with the Schottky junction between TiO2 and metals, the tuned charge state enables the promotion of catalytic efficiency in the catalytic decomposition of formic acid to H2 and CO2 .
Novel Heterojunction Photocatalysts Based On Lanthanum Titanate Nanosheets And Indium Oxide Nanoparticles With Enhanced Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production Activity

Abstract:A lanthanumtitanate (La2Ti2O7) and indium oxide (In2O3) heterojunction nanocomposite is synthesized by a solvothermal method. The crystal phase, morphology, optical absorption activity and chemical composition of the In2O3/La2Ti2O7 heterojunction nanocomposites are characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results reveal that the In2O3 nanoparticles are uniformly dispersed on the surface of the La2Ti2O7 nanosheets with good adhesion. The In2O3/La2Ti2O7 nanocomposite with a molar ratio of 1.5 : 1 exhibits the highest H-2 production rate when used in photocatalytic water splitting, improved by 29.62 and 6.43 times relative to pure In2O3 and La2Ti2O7, respectively. The enhanced photocatalytic H-2 production rate can be ascribed to the formation of the heterojunction structure, which results from the homogeneous dispersion of In2O3 nanoparticles on La2Ti2O7 nanosheets. The configuration of the In2O3/La2Ti2O7 heterojunction nanocomposite photocatalyst can promote the fast separation of photogenerated carriers in space and improve the rate of water-splitting to form H-2.
