Abstract:The use of solar energy via photocatalytic hydrogen evolution is a promising means of energy conversion. gamma-graphyne (gamma-GY), a novel large p-conjugated carbon material, for the first time, is applied to construct a heterojunction with TiO2 nanoparticles for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. The obtained TiO2/gamma-GY photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy, respectively. Enhanced photocatalytic properties were demonstrated for the as-prepared samples. The influence of the gamma-graphyne content on the photocatalytic activity was investigated. The amount of hydrogen evolved from the optimized photocatalyst reached 77.6 mmol in 4 hours, which was about 8.4-fold higher than that of pristine TiO2. This is attributed to the TiO2/g-GY heterojunction structure, which can simultaneously improve the absorption of visible light and suppress the recombination of photo-excited electron-hole pairs during the photocatalytic process. This work shows the potential of g-graphyne for application in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:This work reports a green and facile approach to synthesize chemically bonded TiO2/graphene sheets (GS) nanocomposites using a one-step hydrothermal method. The as-prepared composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and ultraviolet visible (UV-Vis) diffuse reflectance spectra. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated by hydrogen evolution from water splitting under UV–Vis light illumination. An enhancement of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution was observed over the TiO2/GS composite photocatalysts, as 1.6 times larger for TiO2/2.0 wt%GS than that of Degussa P25. This fabrication process features the reduction of graphene oxide and formation of TiO2 simultaneously leading to the well dispersion of generated TiO2 nanoparticles on the surface of GS.

Abstract:Integrating carbon nitride with graphene into a lateral heterojunction would avoid energy loss within the interlaminar space region on conventional composites. To date, its synthesis process is limited to the bottom-up method which lacks the targeting and homogeneity. Herein, we proposed a hydrogen-initiated chemical epitaxial growth strategy at a relatively low temperature for the fabrication of graphene/carbon nitride in-plane heterostructure. Theoretical and experimental analysis proved that methane via in situ generation from the hydrogenated decomposition of carbon nitride triggered the graphene growth along the active sites at the edges of confined spaces. With the enhanced electrical field from the deposited graphene (0.5%), the performances on selective photo-oxidation and photocatalytic water splitting were promoted by 5.5 and 3.7 times, respectively. Meanwhile, a 7720 μmol/h/g(graphene) hydrogen evolution rate was acquired without any cocatalysts. This study provides an top-down strategy to synthesize in-plane catalyst for the utilization of solar energy.

Abstract:Photocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen evolution is widely considered as a clean, green, and renewable route for solar energy conversion and storage. In this work, we fabricated ternary TiO2/MoSe2/γ-graphyne nanocomposite and demonstrated its superior photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity. The samples were investigated by transmission electron microscopy, UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectra, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and photoluminescence spectra. The optimized sample exhibited a high H2 production rate of 16 μmol h−1, which was 3.2-fold as high as that of binary TiO2/MoSe2 and 6.2-fold as high as that of pristine TiO2. The enhanced photocatalytic activity is mainly because of the higher light-harvesting capacity, more active edge sites, and more charge-transfer channels induced by the multicomponent heterojunction through a cascade-driven electronic mechanism. This work presents a practical way to design noble-metal-free photocatalysts for solar energy-driven water splitting by band-engineering tailoring.
Engineering the Tio2-Graphene Interface to Enhance Photocatalytic H-2 Production

Abstract:In this work, TiO2-graphene nanocomposites are synthesized with tunable TiO2 crystal facets ({100}, {101}, and {001} facets) through an anion-assisted method. These three TiO2-graphene nanocomposites have similar particle sizes and surface areas; the only difference between them is the crystal facet exposed in TiO2 nanocrystals. UV/Vis spectra show that band structures of TiO2 nanocrystals and TiO2-graphene nanocomposites are dependent on the crystal facets. Time-resolved photoluminescence spectra suggest that the charge-transfer rate between {100} facets and graphene is approximately 1.4 times of that between {001} facets and graphene. Photoelectrochemical measurements also confirm that the charge-separation efficiency between TiO2 and graphene is greatly dependent on the crystal facets. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals that Ti-C bonds are formed between {100} facets and graphene, while {101} facets and {001} facets are connected with graphene mainly through Ti-O-C bonds. With Ti-C bonds between TiO2 and graphene, TiO2-100-G shows the fastest charge-transfer rate, leading to higher activity in photocatalytic H-2 production from methanol solution. TiO2-101-G with more reductive electrons and medium interfacial charge-transfer rate also shows good H-2 evolution rate. As a result of its disadvantageous electronic structure and interfacial connections, TiO2-001-G shows the lowest H-2 evolution rate. These results suggest that engineering the structures of the TiO2-graphene interface can be an effective strategy to achieve excellent photocatalytic performances.

Abstract:To develop an efficient photocatalyst for solar-to-hydrogen production is regarded as a promising approach to tackling the energy and environmental challenges we are currently facing. In this work, the TiO2-Cu2O nanocomposite was synthesized via a chemical reduction approach at ambient temperature and used as a photocatalyst. The composition and structure characterization indicated that Cu2O particles were loaded on the surface of TiO2 nanospheres. The photocatalytic performance of the as-obtained materials was evaluated by solar-to-hydrogen production test. It was found that the optimized TiO2-Cu2O nanocomposite (TC-20) exhibited a hydrogen evolution rate of 7139.02 μmol·g-1·h-1, which is nearly 7 times that of pristine TiO2. Based on the photoluminescence spectra and photo/electrochemical measurements, the boosted photocatalytic H2 evolution performance comes from the promoted separation efficiency promotion of photoinduced electron-hole pairs, which is originated from the formed p-n heterojunction of the TiO2-Cu2O nanocomposite.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:A series of titanium dioxide and graphene sheets (GSs) composites were synthesized with a sol-gel method using tetrabutyl titanate and graphite oxide (GO) as the starting materials. The obtained TiO2/GSs photocatalysts are characterized by X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption analysis, Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and ultravioletvisible (UV-vis) diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activity of the as-prepared samples was evaluated by hydrogen evolution from water photo-splitting under UV-vis illumination. The influence of GSs content and calcinations atmosphere on the photocatalytic activity was also investigated. The results show that both GSs content and the calcinations atmosphere can affect the photocatalytic activity of the obtained composites.
Facile Synthesis of 2D/2D Ti2C3/ZnIn2S4 Heterostructure for Enhanced Photocatalytic Hydrogen Generation

Abstract:ZnIn2S4, a novel two-dimensional visible light-responsive photocatalyst, has attracted much attention in the photocatalytic evolution of H2 under visible light irradiation due to its attractive intrinsic photoelectric properties and geometric configuration. However, ZnIn2S4 still has severe charge recombination, which results in moderate photocatalytic performance. Herein, we report the successful synthesis of 2D/2D ZnIn2S4/Ti3C2 nanocomposites by a facile one-step hydrothermal method. The efficiency of the nanocomposites in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution under visible light irradiation was also evaluated for different ratios of Ti3C2, and the optimal photocatalytic activity was achieved at 5% Ti3C2. Importantly, the activity was significantly higher than that of pure ZnIn2S4, ZnIn2S4/Pt, and ZnIn2S4/graphene. The enhanced photocatalytic activity is mainly due to the close interfacial contact between Ti3C2 and ZnIn2S4 nanosheets, which amplifies the transport of photogenerated electrons and enhances the separation of photogenerated carriers. This research describes a novel approach for the synthesis of 2D MXenes for photocatalytic hydrogen production and expands the utility of MXene composite materials in the fields of energy storage and conversion.
Fabrication of Ti3C2/TiO2/SrTiO3 ternary heterojunction photocatalyst with efficient charge separation for enhanced hydrogen evolution

Abstract:In this work, a ternary Ti3C2/TiO2/SrTiO3 composite with heterogeneous network structure was prepared by two-step in situ hydrothermal synthesis method, which mainly involved the growth of TiO2 nanosheets and fibrous SrTiO3 sequentially on the Ti3C2 substrate using the Ti source inherent in Ti3C2 as the reaction site. The Ti3C2/TiO2/SrTiO3 heterojunction exhibited enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity. When the doping amount of SrTiO3 was 5 wt%, the hydrogen evolution rate of 5MTS under full solar irradiation reached 14322.6 μmol·g−1·h−1, which was 10.6 times the rate of the Ti3C2/TiO2 composite without modified SrTiO3. Meanwhile, the 5MTS composites showed good stability in the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution cycle test. The enhanced activity and recyclability are mainly attributed to the strong light absorption ability, fast separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, and abundant catalytic active sites. In addition, the synthesis method utilizing an intrinsic Ti source also enhances the interfacial contact between Ti3C2, TiO2, and SrTiO3. This study provides an effective reference for the construction of perovskite-based or Ti3C2 co-catalyzed heterostructures and their application for the conversion of solar power to hydrogen energy.

Abstract:Photoelectrochemical water splitting is an excellent strategy for hydrogen generation and it is pivotal to the development of photoanodes with sufficient sunlight harvesting, rapid charge separation, and enhanced electron injection efficiency. In this work, we rationally constructed a γ-graphyne/TiO2 (GY/TiO2) p-n heterojunction in which p-type γ-graphyne nanosheets were distributed in the three-dimensional space surrounding TiO2 nanotube arrays. The GY/TiO2 photoanode achieves a photocurrent density of 0.75 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V (vs. RHE), 1.7 times that of bare TiO2, and extends the electron lifetime of TiO2 from 0.51 to 1.16 ms. The improvement arises from moderate γ-graphyne modification, contributing to broadened light absorption, the suppressed recombination of electron-hole pairs, an increase in charge transfer, and a higher injection efficiency of surface electrons. This work provides a reliable approach for the utilization and conversion of sustainable solar energy.

Abstract:TiO2 (P25)–graphene (P25–GR) hybrids were prepared via solvothermal reaction of graphene oxide and P25 using ethanol as solvent. The as-prepared P25–GR nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, photoluminescence emission spectroscopy and ultraviolet-visible (UV–vis) diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The results indicated that P25–GR nanocomposites possessed enhanced light absorption ability and charge separation efficiency. As photocatalysts, P25–GR hybrids were much better than the bare P25, when they were used in the hydrogen evolution from aqueous methanol solution under Xe-lamp illumination. A significant enhancement in the rate of hydrogen production was achieved through using P25–GR as photocatalysts, comparing to bare P25. The optimum mass ratio of GR to P25 in the hybrids was 0.5wt%. The higher mass ratio of GR in P25–GR would decrease the photocatalytic activity of P25.

Abstract:Highly efficient nanohybrids used in photocatalytic H2 production from water reduction have attracted many attentions in energy conversion and storage of clean energy. Herein, a new dimension-matched nanohybrid was prepared by fabricating two-dimensional copper carboxyphenyl porphyrin metal-organic frameworks (Cu-PMOF) on two-dimensional Ti3C2 MXene/TiO2 nanosheets (TCs). The visible light response and the separation of photoinduced charges in TCs can be efficiently enhanced after coupling with Cu-PMOF. Furthermore, the prepared nanohybrid showed high activity in photocatalytic H2 evolution. Without adding any other co-catalysts, the H2 production over the optimum TCs/Cu-PMOF was 29 times of pure TCs, suggesting the synergetic effect of TCs and Cu-PMOF in the nanocomposite. Moreover, the electron transfer mechanism was explored so as to explain the enhanced activity in the nanohybrid. This study will offer a feasible strategy for fabricating effective nanocomposites used in photocatalysis.

Fabrication of TaON/CdS Heterostructures for Enhanced Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution under Visible Light Irradiation

Abstract:Developing high-performance photocatalysts for H2 production via fabricating heterojunctions has attracted much attention. Herein, we design a simple strategy to prepare composites that consist of TaON/CdS hybrids via a hydrothermal process. The results show that the pristine CdS nanoparticles loaded with 20 wt% TaON (TC4) could maximize the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate to 19.29 mmol g−1 h−1 under visible light irradiation, which was 2.13 times higher than that of the pristine CdS (9.03 mmol g−1 h−1) under the same conditions. The apparent quantum yield (AQY) of the TC4 nanocomposites at 420 nm was calculated to be 18.23%. The outstanding photocatalytic performance of the composites can be ascribed to the formation of heterojunctions. The electrochemical measurements indicate that the decoration facilitates the generation of extra photo-electrons, prolonging the recombination rate of photogenerated charge carriers, offering adequate active sites and improving catalytic stability. This study sheds light on the construction strategy and the deep understanding of the novel CdS-based composites for high-performance photocatalytic H2 production.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2)-based photocatalysts are a class of hottest materials in solar water splitting, while limited achievements have been gained to date due to its broad band-gap only responding in UV region and sluggish charge transfer. Here, we reported a ternary TiO2-graphene-Ta3N5 hybrid photocatalyst synthesized via an ultrasonic-hydrothermal method. Compared with pristine TiO2 and Ta3N5, the prepared TiO2-graphene-Ta3N5 present remarkably enhanced photocatalytic pure water splitting behavior with an optimal H2-evolution rate of 180 μmol h−1 g−1. In conjunction with systematic characterizations, we demonstrated the boosted photocatalytic performance is ascribed to both improved visible light utilization and charge transfer behavior. Particularly, it is found that water splitting is achieved through a Z-scheme mechanism, in which the two-dimensional lamellar graphene served as a bridge accelerating the electron transfer from TiO2 to Ta3N5. This work opens avenues to design efficient TiO2-based photocatalyst by embedding conducting layer for rapid electron transfer during solar-fuel conversion.

Abstract:In this work, we have synthesized a nano-heterostructure of TiO2 nanoparticles decorating TiO2 nanowires (TiO2 NPs/NWs). Both the TiO2 NPs and NWs show an anatase crystal phase with {101} facet predominately exposed. It is found that the ratio of NPs to NWs affects the dispersion of TiO2 NPs and their combination with TiO2 NWs, as well as the separation of photo-generated charges and further the photocatalytic activity of the material. The heterostructure with a TiO2 NPs to NWs ratio of 1:1 (NP0.5/NW0.5) shows high activity and excellent cycling stability in both Rhodamine B degradation and water splitting. A possible charge transfer mechanism on the TiO2 NPs/NWs hybrid has been proposed to clarify the correlation between material structure and performance. This work not only demonstrates the advantage of 0D-1D nano-heterostructures, but also provides a facile approach of designing and fabricating excellent catalysts for energy and environmental applications.
Hierarchical meso/macro-porous TiO2/graphitic carbon nitride nanofibers with enhanced hydrogen evolution

Abstract:Constructing a hierarchical structure with tunable pore size is a practical method to improve the capacity of photocatalytic hydrogen production of catalysts. In this work, titanium dioxide/graphitic carbon nitride (TiO2/g-C3N4) nanofibers with hierarchical meso/macro-porous structure are fabricated by combining a one-step electrospinning method and calcination process, in which the hierarchical meso/macro-porous structure is developed by introducing polyvinylpyrrolidone and liquid paraffin into the electrospinning solution. Comprehensive characterizations reveal that the hierarchical meso/macro-porous TiO2/g-C3N4 nanofibers have improved ultraviolet-visible light absorption, the separation efficiency of carriers, and photocatalytic performance. The photocatalytic H2 evolution is up to 1202 μmol g−1 in 7 h, which is better than those of corresponding TiO2/g-C3N4 photocatalysts previously reported. This work provides a new strategy to build a hierarchical meso/macro-porous nanofiber and an ideal solution to improve the hydrogen production of TiO2/g-C3N4.

Ti3C2 MXene cocatalyst supported Ti3C2/SrTiO3/g-C3N4 heterojunctions with efficient electron transfer for photocatalytic H2 production

Abstract:Previous studies on photocatalytic technology have shown that doping co-catalysts and constructing composite heterojunctions are effective strategies for improving the photocatalyst performance. The Ti3C2/SrTiO3/g-C3N4 composite photocatalyst with a gradient heterostructure was prepared by the high-temperature calcination method with Ti3C2 as the co-catalyst. The effects of g-C3N4 content on the microstructure and hydrogen evolution rate of the Ti3C2/SrTiO3/g-C3N4 composites were investigated under simulated sunlight. The results showed that the photocatalyst with 60 wt% of g-C3N4 had the optimal hydrogen evolution rate of 1733.13 μmol·g-1·h-1 after simulated sunlight irradiation for 4 h, which was approximately 3.3 times higher than that of Ti3C2/SrTiO3. After four photocatalytic hydrogen evolution cycles, no significant decrease in the hydrogen evolution rate of the Ti3C2/SrTiO3/g-C3N4 composite was observed. This work may serve as a rational reference on the synergistic effect of heterostructures and cocatalysts to improve the separation effect of electron-hole pairs, thus improving the hydrogen evolution effect of the catalyst.

Abstract:Heterojunction engineering has been deemed as one of effective strategies to develop advanced photocatalysts for photocatalytic H-2 evolution. In the present work, we report the rationally designed TiO2 (anatase)/TiO2 (rutile)/In2O3 (TiO2 (A-R)/In2O3) heterojunctions through a one-step in situ calcination method for photocatalytic H-2 evolution. The as-constructed TiO2(A-R)/In2O3 heterojunction photocatalysts deliver a H-2 evolution rate of 268 mu mol g(-1) h(-1), which is 1488 times greater than that of pristine In2O3. Such significantly enhanced behaviors could be attributed to the MXene-derived porous multilayer-like nanostructures, which offer more reactive sites, promote light harvesting, and accelerate the transfer of photogenerated carriers. Moreover, the formation of two type-II semiconductor heterojunctions with intimate contact among anatase TiO2, rutile TiO2 and In2O3 affords the synergetic effect for improved charge separation with boosted photocatalytic H-2 evolution.
