Abstract:Phase-junctions between a cocatalyst and its semiconductor host are quite effective to enhance the photocatalytic activity and are widely studied, while reports on the phase-juncted cocatalyst are still rare. In this work, we report the deposition of the Pt/PtO phase-juncted nanodots as cocatalyst via NaOH modification of an interconnected meso-macroporous TiO2 network with high surface area and inner-particle mesopores to enhance the performance of photocatalytic H2 production. Our results show that NaOH modification can largely influence Pt/PtO phase-juncted nanodot formation and dispersity. Compared to the TiO2 nanoparticles, the hierarchically meso-macroporous TiO2 network containing 0.18 wt % Pt/PtO phase-juncted cocatalyst demonstrates a highest photocatalytic H2 rate of 13 mmol g-1 h-1 under simulated solar light, and possesses a stable cycling activity without obvious decrease after five cycles. Such high H2 production performance can be attributed to both the phase-juncted Pt/PtO providing more active sites while PtO suppresses the undesirable hydrogen back reaction, and the special hierarchically porous TiO2 network with inner-particle mesopores presenting short diffusion path lengths for photogenerated electrons and enhanced light harvesting efficiency. This work suggests that Pt/PtO phase-juncted cocatalyst on hierarchically porous TiO2 nanostructures is a promising strategy for advanced photocatalytic H2 production.

Abstract:Photocatalytic reforming of biomass is a promising way to produce hydrogen using renewable energy. Photocatalytic reforming of methanol on Pt/TiO2–SO42− as a model reaction of biomass reforming was investigated. Sulfated TiO2 (TiO2–SO42−) with a tunable surface phase was prepared by calcining commercially available titanium dioxide TiO2 (Degussa P25) with deposited sodium sulfate Na2SO4 as a modifier. Compared with P25, the as-prepared TiO2–SO42− with Pt co-catalyst shows an increase up to 6-fold in the activity for H2 production via photocatalytic reforming of methanol, and the CO (undesired product) concentration in the produced H2 is decreased by about two orders of magnitude. XRD patterns and UV Raman spectra clearly indicate that TiO2 depositing with Na2SO4 can significantly retard the phase transformation from anatase to rutile during calcination at elevated temperatures. It is proposed that both the phase composition and the high crystallinity of TiO2 contribute to the high H2 evolution activity. IR spectra of pyridine adsorption and the NH3-TPD profile show that the surface acid sites of the photocatalyst are greatly reduced after calcination at high temperatures. It is proposed that the decrease in the acidity of the samples might be responsible for the low CO selectivity.
Enhancing Hydrogen Production Activity and Suppressing CO Formation from Photocatalytic Biomass Reforming on Pt/TiO2 by Optimizing Anatase–rutile Phase Structure

Abstract:The photocatalytic activity in hydrogen production from biomass reforming can be significantly enhanced while keeping ultra-low CO concentration in produced H2 by tuning the anatase–rutile phase structures of Pt/TiO2 photocatalysts. Compared with Pt/P25, the overall photocatalytic activity for the photocatalyst with optimized anatase–rutile structure can be enhanced up to 3–5 times, and the CO concentration in hydrogen can be reduced from several thousands ppm to 5ppm. It is proposed that the anatase–rutile phase structure can not only enhance the charge separation, consequently the activity, but also adjust the surface acid/base property which suppresses the CO formation.
Surface Energy-Driven Solution Epitaxial Growth of Anatase TiO2 Homostructures for Overall Water Splitting

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been extensively investigated as a photocatalyst for water splitting to produce H-2. However, an overall water splitting by using anatase TiO2 is extremely difficult due to the short lifetime of holes. In this work, we propose that a surface energy decrease from {001} to {101} of anatase TiO2 is able to drive an epitaxial growth. A novel anatase TiO2 homostructure has been successfully synthesized via a facile hydrothermal route, where {101} semi-pyramid nanoparticles epitaxially grew on the both sides of the {001} nanosheets. The epitaxial relationship between the nanoparticles and the nanosheets has been characterized to be {001}/1{001} of anatase TiO2. For the first time, it is interesting to find that the homostructure with 12 wt% of {101} semi-pyramid can significantly improve the H-2 evolution rate by nearly 5 times compared to the pure nanosheets under the ultraviolet irradiation. More importantly, such homostructure enables 10.78 mu mol g(-1) h(-1) of O-2 production whereas the pure nanosheets cannot evolve detectable O-2 gas. Meanwhile, the time-resolved photoluminescence analysis indicates that the mean lifetime of the holes is increased from 2.20 ns of the nanosheets to 3.59 ns of the homostructure, accounting for the observed overall water splitting. The findings suggest that constructing a homostructure by a surface energy strategy could be promising towards overall water splitting, which may be applicable to other photocatalytic materials. Abstract:The efficiency of photocatalysis largely hinges on the design of the photocatalysts, which can be optimized for effective light absorption, improved charge separation and transport, and faster surface reactions. In this research, we developed a yolk-shell nanostructured photocatalyst featuring one-dimensional TiO2 nanorods (NRs) cores encapsulated within a porous silica shell. After photodepositing Pt nanoparticles (NPs) onto the TiO2NRs, the photocatalyst exhibited excellent performance. Under simulated sunlight, Pt2-TiO2-NRs@SiO2 achieved a photocatalytic efficiency of 55.47 mmol g-1h- 1 using methanol as the sacrificial agent and an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 7.93 % at 350 nm, surpassing most previously reported TiO2-based catalysts. This superior activity is attributed to 1D NRs, along with the hollow structure that enhances light utilization through multiple scattering. The stability and high catalytic performance of these yolk-shell structures highlight the effectiveness of our design strategy in fabricating novel, highly active, and stable catalysts.

Abstract:CuOx/TiO2 photocatalysts prepared with anatase TiO2 nanocrystals exposing different types of facets as supports were examined for photocatalytic H-2 production in methanol/water solution under simulated solar light. Catalyst structures were characterized by XRD, HRTEM, XPS, UV-vis, EPR, PL, H-2 -TPR and CO chemisorption. Enhanced photocatalytic H-2 productions of CuOx/TiO2 photocatalysts followed an order of CuOx/TiO2{0 0 1} > CuOx/TiO2-{1 0 0} > CuOx/TiO2-{1 0 1}. TiO2 facets were found to strongly affect the CuOx-TiO2 interaction and structures of CuOx/TiO2 photocatalysts. Cu2O-TiO2 interaction in CuOx/TiO2-{0 0 1} photocatalyst is the strongest, resulting in the highest Cu2O dispersion and density of Cu2O-TiO2 heterojunctions active in photocatalytic H-2 production. The results add insights into morphology engineering as an effective strategy to tune structures and photocatalytic activity of TiO2 -based composite photocatalysts.
Surface Ti3+/Ti4+ Redox Shuttle Enhancing Photocatalytic H-2 Production in Ultrathin Tio2 Nanosheets/Cdse Quantum Dots

Abstract:Constructing unique nanocomposites to facilitate charge transfer and promote catalytic activity provides a promising approach for enhancing solar-to-hydrogen efficiency. However, revealing the catalytic surface state and understanding their roles in the photocatalytic process remain elusive. Here, we develop a facile and mild solution method for ultrathin TiO2 nanosheets with a large specific surface area and enhanced surface Ti3+ accumulation. Moreover, we demonstrate a hybrid nanosystem composed of ultrathin 2D TiO2 nanosheets directly coupled with 0D CdSe QDs for hydrogen generation. The 0D CdSe QDs increase visible light absorption ability after being coupled with the TiO2 nanosheets. Owing to the synergistic effect between the quantum dots and nanosheets, the apparent quantum efficiency increases to 45% at 380 and 450 nm, and the H-2 evolution exhibits a 10-fold enhancement. EPR results indicate that the surface Ti3+ greatly promotes H free radical production due to the redox couple Ti3+/Ti4+ providing an efficient route for the photoexcited electron-hole separation. Our findings provide new insights toward understanding and exploiting highly efficient photocatalyst.

Abstract:The photocatalytic hydrogen production over TiO2 nanoparticles with mesostructures has been studied using CH3OH as a sacrificial reagent. The effects of the calcination temperature, Pt-loading, amount of TiO2 and methanol as well as irradiation time on the H2 evolution rate were investigated in detail. The results indicated that the as-synthesized TiO2 nanoparticles without calcination, having a large specific surface area (438m2/g) and small crystallite size (2.3nm) dispersed among the amorphous mesoporous domains, exhibited the best photocatalytic activity for H2 production compared with the samples calcined at different temperatures and the commercial photocatalyst P25 (Degussa, Germany) under the same photoreaction conditions. The presence of mesostructured TiO2 nanoparticles with a uniform dispersion of the co-catalyst (Pt) has resulted in an effective, faster charge separation, which, in turn, leads to a higher photocatalytic activity for H2 production.

Abstract:A gas–solid heterogeneous system for solar–chemical energy conversion of CO2-SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) with H2O on different nanostructure photocatalysts and the photocatalysis pathway were discussed. Different crystal phases and sizes of low-dimensional nano-TiO2 and Pt-metal supported photocatalysts are synthesized and characterized with X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, photoluminescence, CO pulse chemisorptions, N2 adsorption–desorption analysis at 77K and X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. The catalytic activity was tested in a fixed-bed photocatalysis reactor and the CH4 yield on the Pt/TiO2 nanotube photocatalysts is more remarkable. It increased with the increase of the UV irradiation time and accumulated to about 4.8μmolh−1gTi−1, enhanced as the increase of the reaction temperature and H2O/CO2 molar ratio as well.
Atomic Interface Engineering of Single‐Atom Pt/TiO2‐Ti3C2 for Boosting Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

Abstract:Single‐atom Pt anchored on 3D TiO2‐Ti3C2 is synthesized through an in situ transformation and photoreduction method. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of the atomic interface engineering of single‐atom Pt and interfacial TiOTi, the optimized photocatalyst exhibits excellent CO2‐to‐CO conversion activity of 20.5 μmol g–1 h–1 with a selectivity of 96%, which is five times that of commercial TiO2 (P25). Solar‐driven CO2 conversion into valuable fuels is a promising strategy to alleviate the energy and environmental issues. However, inefficient charge separation and transfer greatly limits the photocatalytic CO2 reduction efficiency. Herein, single‐atom Pt anchored on 3D hierarchical TiO2‐Ti3C2 with atomic‐scale interface engineering is successfully synthesized through an in situ transformation and photoreduction method. The in situ growth of TiO2 on Ti3C2 nanosheets can not only provide interfacial driving force for the charge transport, but also create an atomic‐level charge transfer channel for directional electron migration. Moreover, the single‐atom Pt anchored on TiO2 or Ti3C2 can effectively capture the photogenerated electrons through the atomic interfacial PtO bond with shortened charge migration distance, and simultaneously serve as active sites for CO2 adsorption and activation. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of the atomic interface engineering of single‐atom Pt and interfacial TiOTi, the optimized photocatalyst exhibits excellent CO2‐to‐CO conversion activity of 20.5 μmol g−1 h−1 with a selectivity of 96%, which is five times that of commercial TiO2 (P25). This work sheds new light on designing ideal atomic‐scale interface and single‐atom catalysts for efficient solar fuel conversation.

Designed Construction of SrTiO3/SrSO4/Pt Heterojunctions with Boosted Photocatalytic H2 Evolution Activity

Abstract:Efficient separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs is a crucial factor for high-performance photocatalysts. Effective electron-hole separation and migration could be achieved by heterojunctions with suitable band structures. Herein, a porous SrTiO3/SrSO4 heterojunction is prepared by a sol-gel method at room temperature followed by an annealing process. XRD characterization suggests high crystallinity of the heterostructure. A well-defined interface between the two phases is confirmed by high-resolution (HR)TEM. The photocatalytic H-2 evolution productivity of the SrTiO3/SrSO4 heterojunction with Pt as co-catalyst reaches 396.82 mu mol g(-1) h(-1), which is 16 times higher than that of SrTiO3/Pt. The boosted photocatalytic activity of SrTiO3/SrSO4/Pt can be ascribed to the presence of SrSO4, which promotes the transfer and migration of photogenerated carriers by forming the heterojunction and porous structure, which provides a large amount of active sites. This novel porous heterostructure brings new ideas for the development of high-efficiency photocatalysts for H-2 release.
Influences of TiO2 Phase Structures on the Structures and Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production of CuOx/TiO2 Photocatalysts

Abstract:CuOx/TiO2 photocatalysts employing TiO2 with different phase structures as well as P25 as supports were prepared, and their structures and activity for photocatalytic H-2 production in methanol/water solution under simulated solar light were comparatively studied. Structural characterization results demonstrated that the TiO2 phase structure strongly affects the CuOx-TiO2 interaction and copper species in various CuOx/TiO2 photocatalysts. The Cu2O-rutile TiO2 interaction is much stronger than the Cu2O-anatase TiO2 interaction, facilitates the interfacial charge transfer process within the Cu2O-rutile TiO2 heterojunction but disables supported Cu2O to catalyze the hole-participated methanol oxidation. The Cu2O-anatase TiO2 heterojunction with the appropriate Cu2O-anatase TiO2 interaction and thus the balancing efficiencies between the interfacial charge transfer process and hole-participated methanol oxidation is most photocatalytic active, and CuOx/P25 with the largest population of Cu2O-anatase TiO2 heterojunction exhibits the highest photocatalytic H-2 production. Abstract:A well-designed photocatalyst with excellent activity and selectivity is crucial for photocatalytic CO2 conversion and utilization. TiO2 is one of the most promising photocatalysts. However, its excessive surface oxidation potential and insufficient surface active sites inhibit its activity and photocatalytic CO2 reduction selectivity. In this work, highly dispersed Bi2Ti2O7 was introduced into defective TiO2 to adjust its oxidation potential and the generation of radicals, further inhibiting reverse reactions during the photocatalytic conversion of CO2. Moreover, an in situ topochemical reaction etching route was designed, which achieved defective surfaces, a contacted heterophase interface, and an efficient electron transfer path. The optimized heterophase photocatalyst exhibited 93.9% CH4 selectivity at a photocatalytic rate of 6.8 μmol·g-1·h-1, which was 7.9 times higher than that of P25. This work proposes a feasible approach to fabricating photocatalysts with well-designed band structures, highly dispersed heterophase interfaces, and sufficient surface active sites to effectively modulate the selectivity and activity of CO2 photoreduction by manipulating the reaction pathways.

Abstract:Platinum co-catalysts play a critical role in promoting the photocatalytic performance of inorganic semiconductors, yet despite intensive investigation, the active platinum species responsible remains controversial. Here, the physicochemical properties of Pt nanoparticles introduced into anatase titania through three different synthetic protocols are investigated by porosimetry, XRD, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and correlated with their corresponding activity for aqueous photocatalytic hydrogen production. Conventional wet impregnation produces small but highly oxidized platinum nanoparticles owing to the classical strong metal-support interaction with titania during high-temperature processing. Photodeposition yields predominantly metallic but large and inhomogeneous (1.5-7.5nm) Pt nanoparticles. In contrast, a modified in situ polyol route affords metallic and highly dispersed (<2nm) nanoparticles with minimal PtOx. Photocatalytic H-2 evolution is directly proportional to the surface concentration of Pt metal, conclusively demonstrating metallic platinum as the active co-catalyst, and offering a simple parameter to quantitatively predict the photocatalytic performance of Pt/TiO2 in H-2 production. The modified in situ polyol synthesis is optimal for co-catalyst formation, delivering rate enhancements of 25-80% compared with the other syntheses.

Abstract:Metal-containing nanocrystals with well-designed surface structures represent a class of model systems for revealing the fundamental physical and chemical processes involved in heterogeneous catalysis. Herein it is shown how surface modification can be utilized as an efficient strategy for controlling the surface electronic state of catalysts and, thus, for tuning their catalytic activity. As model catalysts, the Pd-tetrahedron-TiO2 nanostructures, modified on the surface with different foreign atoms, showed a varied activity in the catalytic decomposition of formic acid towards H2 production. The catalytic activity increases with a reduction in the work function of modified atoms; this reduction can be well explained by a surface polarization mechanism. In this hybrid system, the difference in the work functions of Pd and modified atoms results in surface polarization on the Pd surface and, thus, in the tuning of its charge state. Together with the Schottky junction between TiO2 and metals, the tuned charge state enables the promotion of catalytic efficiency in the catalytic decomposition of formic acid to H2 and CO2 .
Tunable TiO2‐Heterophase Junctions for Studying and Enhancing Photocatalytic H2 Production Under Visible Light

Abstract:The optimal sample (0.7 content in Ti4+ species) has a high photocatalytic activity with 0.23 μmol/h of hydrogen, attributed to the heterophase junctions R52/B46, highly pore size 20.60nm, and relatively small bandgap energy 2.974 eV. This work opens new horizons on the creation and study of a multiphase TiO2 that works under visible light in the fields of renewable energies and various other fields. Photocatalytic performance of titanium dioxide under visible light was optimized by preparing heterophase compounds (containing two or more phases) by hydrolysis method using TiCl4 as a precursor with different concentrations (0.5, 0.7, 1, and 2) to adjust condensation modes of Ti4+. The structural and textural properties of the synthesized TiO2 multiphase were fully characterized by XRD, Raman scattering, FTIR, BET, MEB‐EDX, XPS, diffuse UV–vis, and EIS spectroscopy. The increase of TiCl4 amount precursor has a significant effect on the heterophase junctions of TiO2 structure and more especially on textural and structural properties. The best specific surface area (131 m2/g) is observed for the sample at high Ti‐content (2 in Ti4+). The anatase phase (79%) is detected only for 0.5 in Ti4+ sample. However, both rutile (R) and brookite (B) phases are present in 0.7, 1, and 2 Ti‐contents. On the one hand, the band gap of 2.9 eV allows titanium dioxide to be active under visible light. In addition, the presence of rutile/brookite heterophase junction contributes significantly to the improvement of active sites for photocatalytic reaction. The separation efficiency of photogenerated electrons and holes contributes to photocatalytic evolution performance under visible light for hydrogen production. The optimal sample (0.7 content in Ti+4 species) which presents in its structure 52% of rutile and 46% of brookite phases presented the highest photocatalytic activity with a 230 μmol/h of hydrogen generation, attributed to the heterophase junctions R52/B46, highly pore size 20.60 nm, and relatively small bandgap energy 2.974 eV. This work opens new horizons on the creation and study of a multiphase TiO2 that works under visible light in the fields of renewable energies and various other fields.

Charge Separation Promoted by Phase Junctions in Photocatalysts

Abstract:Since the 1980s, photocatalysis research has expanded at an unexpected rate. Fabrication of phase junctions has proved to be an effective method to enhance photocatalytic performance. As a model photocatalyst, titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been extensively studied. This feature article mainly reviews the study on TiO2 surface phase junctions, including the characterization of the surface phases of TiO2, the use of anatase:rutile TiO2 phase junctions in photocatalytic hydrogen produc-tion, and the current understanding of how TiO2 phase junctions work in photocatalysis. The surface structure of TiO2 can be well characterized by ultraviolet (UV) Raman spectroscopy, unlike X-ray diffraction and visible Raman spectroscopy. Based on these results, the mechanism of phase trans-formation processes of TiO2 was clearly identified. The infrared (IR) spectra of probe molecules CO and CO2 on TiO2 further characterized the surface structure of TiO2, strongly supporting the UV Raman results. Furthermore, the typical visible emission of anatase and near-infrared emission of the rutile phase of TiO2 make photoluminescence (PL) a suitable technique to characterize the sur-face phase structure of TiO2. PL can also provide information about the carrier dynamics of TiO2 in photocatalysis. Because of the surface phase junction formed between anatase and rutile, the mixed-phase structure of TiO2 exhibits a superior H2 production activity to those of pure anatase or rutile phase. The activity of Degussa P25 TiO2 can be further increased by three to five times by tuning the phase structure through thermal treatment. Moreover, the phase transformation of TiO2 from anatase to rutile can be controlled by surface modification with Na2SO4, resulting in catalysts with activity six times higher than that of P25. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy provided a clear phase-junction image of TiO2, which showed atomic contact at the interface of the phase junction. The mechanism of phase junctions improving photocatalytic performance was in-vestigated by time-resolved spectroscopic techniques. The charge transfer process across the ana-tase: rutile phase junction was confirmed by the results of time-resolved IR measurements, and electron transfer from anatase to rutile phases is proposed to occur in mixed-phase TiO2. These studies on the phase junctions of TiO2 improve our understanding of photocatalysis and may inspire new ideas for the design of promising photocatalytic systems.
Interfacial molecular regulation of TiO 2 for enhanced and stable cocatalyst-free photocatalytic hydrogen production

Abstract:On the basis of the inherent property limitations of commercial P25-TiO 2 , many surface interface modification methods have attracted substantial attention for further improving the photocatalytic properties. However, current strategies for designing and modifying efficient photocatalysts (which exhibit complicated manufacturing processes and harsh conditions) are not efficient for production that is low cost, is nontoxic, and exhibits good stability; and therefore restrict practical applications. Herein, a facile and reliable method is reported for in situ amine-containing silane coupling agent functionalization of commercial P25-TiO 2 by covalent surface modification for constructing a highly efficient photocatalyst. As a consequence, a high efficiency of H 2 evolution was achieved for TiO 2 -SDA with 0.95 mmol h −1 g −1 (AQE ∼45.6% at 365 nm) under solar light irradiation without a co-catalyst. The amination modification broadens the light absorption range of the photocatalyst, inhibits the binding of photogenerated carriers, and improves the photocatalytic efficiency; which was verified by photochemical properties and DFT theoretical calculations. This covalent modification method ensures the stability of the photocatalytic reaction. This work provides an approach for molecularly modified photocatalysts to improve photocatalytic performance by covalently modifying small molecules containing amine groups on the photocatalyst surface.
