Abstract:Let M be an n-dimensional closed hypersurface with constant mean curvature and constant scalar curvature in a unit sphere. Denote by H and S the mean curvature and the squared length of the second fundamental form. We prove that if a(n, H) <= S <= alpha( n, H)+ CnH2, where n >= 4 and H not equal 0, then S = alpha( n, H) and M is a Clifford torus Sn-1(r(1)) x S-1(r(2)). Here alpha(n, H) = n + n(3)/2(n -1) H-2 - n(n - 2)/2(n - 1) root n(2)H(4) + 4(n - 1) H-2, and C-n is a positive constant explicitly depending on n. The emphasis is that our gap theorem imposes no restriction on the range of mean curvature. Moreover, we obtain gap theorems for complete hypersurfaces with constant mean curvature and constant scalar curvature in space forms.

Abstract:Let M be an n (>= 7)-dimensional complete submanifold with parallel mean curvature in the hyperbolic space Hn+p, whose mean curvature satisfies H-2-1 <= 0. Denote by angstrom and B-R(q) the trace free second fundamental form of M and the geodesic ball of radius R centered at q is an element of M, respectively. We prove that if lim(R ->infinity) sup integral(vertical bar angstrom vertical bar 2dM)(BR(q))/R-2 and if (integral(M)vertical bar angstrom vertical bar(n) dM)(2/n) + 2n(n-2)/3 root n(n-1) H(integral(M)vertical bar angstrom vertical bar(n/2)dM)(2/n) <= C(n), then M is congruent to an n-dimensional hyperbolic space or the Euclidean space R-n. Abstract:An n-dimensional lambda-hypersurface X : M -> Rn+1 is the critical point of the weighted area functional integral(M) e(-1/4|X|2) d mu for weighted volume-preserving variations, which is also a generalization of the self-shrinking solution of the mean curvature flow. We first prove that if the L-n-norm of the second fundamental form of the lambda-hypersurface X : M -> Rn+1 with n >= 3 is less than an explicit positive constant K(n, lambda), then M is a hyperplane. Secondly, we show that if the L-n-norm of the trace-free second fundamental form of M with n >= 3 is less than an explicit positive constant D(n, lambda) and the mean curvature is suitably bounded, then M is a hyperplane. We also obtain similar results for lambda-surfaces in R-3 under L-4-curvature pinching conditions.

Abstract:In this paper, the notion of Fredholm tetrad of closed linear subspaces in a Banach space is introduced. Then the stability of the Fredholm tetrad is proved. After that, the notion of semi-compact perturbation of a closed linear subspace is introduced. Then for a of pair of closed linear subspace of a Banach space such that one is a semi-compact perturbation of the other, it is proved that the relative dimension between them is well-defined. If the perturbation is compact, the relative dimension is stable. Finally the perturbed argumented Morse index is studied.

Abstract:Let H be a separable complex Hilbert space. Denote by Gr(H) the Grassmann manifold of H. We study the following sets of pairs of elements in Gr(H): Delta={(S,T) in Gr(H) x Gr(H): there exists Z in Gr(H) such that S\dot{+} Z=T \dot{+} Z=H }, which are pairs of subspaces that have a common complement, and Gamma={(S,T) in Gr(H) x Gr(H): (S,T) does not belong to Delta}, Gamma=Gr(H) x Gr(H) - Delta, which are pairs of subspaces that do not admit a common complement. We identify S withP_S, the subspace S with the orthogonal projection P_S onto S. Thus we may regard Delta and Gamma as subsets of B(H) x B(H) (here B(H) denotes the algebra of bounded linear operators in H. We show that Delta is open, and its connected components are parametrized by the dimension and codimension of the subspaces. The connected component of Delta having both infinite dimensional and co-dimensional subspaces is dense in the corresponding component of Gr(H) x Gr(H). On the other hand, Gamma is a (closed) C^\infty submanifold of B(H) x B(H), and we characterize the connected components of Gamma in terms of dimensions and semi-Fredholm indices. We study the role played by the geodesic structure of the Grassmann geometry of H in the geometry of both Delta and Gamma. Several examples of pairs in Delta and the connected components of Gamma are given in Hilbert spaces of functions.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the topological properties and the gap sequences of Bedford-McMullen sets. First, we introduce a topological condition, the component separation condition (CSC), and a geometric condition, the exponential rate condition (ERC). Then we prove that the CSC implies the ERC, and that both of them are sufficient conditions for obtaining the asymptotic estimate of gap sequences. We also explore topological properties of Bedford-McMullen sets and prove that all normal Bedford-McMullen sets with infinitely many connected components satisfy the CSC, from which we obtain the asymptotic estimate of the gap sequences of Bedford-McMullen sets without any restrictions. Finally, we apply our result to Lipschitz equivalence.

Abstract:In this paper, the gap function for a new class of generalized vector variational inequal- ities with point-to-set mappings (for short, GVVI) is introduced and the necessary and sufficient conditions for the GVVI are established. Abstract:We introduce and explore a new concept of evasive subspace with respect to a collection of subspaces sharing a common dimension, most notably partial spreads. We show that this concept generalises known notions of subspace scatteredness and evasiveness. We establish various upper bounds for the dimension of an evasive subspace with respect to arbitrary partial spreads, obtaining improvements for the Desarguesian ones. We also establish existence results for evasive spaces in a non-constructive way, using a graph theory approach. The upper and lower bounds we derive have a precise interpretation as bounds for the critical exponent of certain combinatorial geometries. Finally, we investigate connections between the notion of evasive space we introduce and the theory of rank-metric codes, obtaining new results on the covering radius and on the existence of minimal vector rank-metric codes.
