Abstract:This paper proposes a new channel on the causal relation between trade liberalization and labor share changes. Since China’s accession to the WTO, a rise in market concentration and a decline in labor share have been observed in the manufacturing sectors in China. Using the Chinese manufacturing firm data between 2000 and 2007, we explore the effect of China’s WTO accession on labor share and find that the decline of labor share is mainly driven by input-trade liberalization and growth of importers in this period. First, importers reduce their labor shares with exposure to the input-trade liberalization. Second, market share concentrates to the superstar importers, which reduce their labor shares during the trade liberalization period and have relatively low labor shares. We construct a simple heterogeneous firm model that features the self-selection effect in the outsourcing market to rationalize our empirical findings.
