Abstract:Ti-6Al-4V parts are usually hypothesized as isotropic mechanical properties during micro-machining operation. However, the crystal anisotropic mechanical property is an influential factor in the machining of crystals with different sizes and orientations. The hypothesis causes distinct variation in predicting machining force, and consequently the surface integrity cannot be exactly predicted in the micro-machining. Actually, Ti-6Al-4V parts are pseudo isotropy composed of grains with different orientations, elastic modulus, and hardness. Simultaneously, the initiation mode of plastic slip system varies with the grain orientation when the crystal is subjected to an applied load. It is challengeable to evaluate the effect of crystal orientation on its macroscopic properties, either by traditional experimental methods or macroscopic finite element analysis. Nano-indentation provides one novel method to investigate the plastic deformation of selected grains with specific orientations to characterize their mechanical response properties. This research aims to investigate the plastic behavior of α phase Ti-6Al-4V with different orientation grains by means of nano-indentation experiment and crystal plastic finite element method. In the study, single crystals of α phase are classified into “hard grains” (θ < 30°), “soft grains” (θ > 60°) and “normal grains” (30° < θ < 60°) by defining the crystal inclination angle (θ). The elastic modulus and hardness of hard grains are 9% and 28% larger than those of soft grains, respectively. This difference in mechanical properties depends on the slip system that dominates the plastic deformation behavior. The plastic deformation of soft grains is dominated by prismatic slip (48%), while hard grains are accommodated to plastic deformation by basal slip (51%). The average total cumulative shear strain of the soft grains is double that of the hard grains at a maximum load of 10 mN. Meanwhile, the sensitivity analysis is performed to evaluate the effects of the three sets of < a > slip systems and the two sets of < c + a > slip systems on plastic deformation with different grain orientations. The research contributes to the understanding of the plastic deformation mechanism in micro-machining and the exactly predicting the surface integrity generated from micro-machining.
Experiments and Crystal Plasticity Finite Element Simulations of Nanoindentation on Ti–6Al–4V Alloy

Abstract:In this paper, we investigated the micromechanical behavior of Ti–6Al–4V by means of nanoindentation experiments performed on a specimen with duplex microstructure. After nanoindentation experiments, electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) scan was conducted on the nanoindentation region to obtain the crystallographic information. Then the crystal plasticity finite element (CPFE) simulations were carried out using the measured grain orientations. The simulated load–displacement curves match the experimental data well with proper model parameters. It was found that the hardness varied with the grain orientation, and the pileup patterns on the indented surfaces exhibit significant anisotropy and grain orientation dependence. The effects of grain boundary and orientation of Berkovich indenter on the nanoindentation results were discussed.
Anisotropic Plasticity of Nanocrystalline Ti:A Molecular Dynamics Simulation

Abstract:Using molecular dynamics simulations, the plastic deformation behavior of nanocrytalline Ti has been investigated under tension and compression normal to the {0001}, { 1 ¯ 010 } , and { 1 ¯ 2 1 ¯ 0 } planes. The results indicate that the plastic deformation strongly depends on crystal orientation and loading directions. Under tension normal to basal plane, the deformation mechanism is mainly the grain reorientation and the subsequent deformation twinning. Under compression, the transformation of hexagonal-close packed (HCP)-Ti to face-centered cubic (FCC)-Ti dominates the deformation. When loading is normal to the prismatic planes (both { 1 ¯ 010 } and { 1 ¯ 2 1 ¯ 0 } ), the deformation mechanism is primarily the phase transformation among HCP, body-centered cubic (BCC), and FCC structures, regardless of loading mode. The orientation relations (OR) of {0001}HCP║{111}FCC and 〈 1 ¯ 210 〉 HCP | | 〈 110 〉 FCC , and { 10 1 ¯ 0 } HCP | | { 1 1 ¯ 0 } FCC and 〈 0001 〉 HCP | | 〈 010 〉 FCC between the HCP and FCC phases have been observed in the present work. For the transformation of HCP → BCC → HCP, the OR is 0001 α 1 | | { 110 } β | | { 10 1 ¯ 0 } α 2 (HCP phase before the critical strain is defined as α 1-Ti, BCC phase is defined as β-Ti, and the HCP phase after the critical strain is defined as α 2-Ti). Energy evolution during the various loading processes further shows the plastic anisotropy of nanocrystalline Ti is determined by the stacking order of the atoms. The results in the present work will promote the in-depth study of the plastic deformation mechanism of HCP materials.

Abstract:In this work, nanoindentation experiments were carried out to investigate the deformation behavior of alpha 2 phase in Ti-43.5Al-4Nb-1Mo-0.1B alloy. The crystal plasticity simulations of nanoindentation process were implemented using the crystal orientation information obtained from the EBSD results. Through the combination of crystal plasticity finite element simulations and nanoindentation experiments, the constitutive parameters were calibrated and verified by comparing the hardness of simulated and experimental results. The mean error between simulation and experiment was 7.89%, which confirmed the accuracy of parameter calibration. Besides, the surface topography and the slip behavior were analyzed by the calculation of Schmid factors. Results revealed that the slip and pileup tend to occur at the areas with a large surface Schmid factor (SSF) and a small interior Schmid factor (ISF). In addition, the hardness and its connection with the slip behavior were discussed. It was found that the hardness of each grain is closely related to its crystal orientation. Among all the tested grains, the grain with Euler angle of (115.5 degrees, 80.1 degrees, 8.4 degrees) has the lowest value of hardness, and the slip system (1100) [1120] plays a leading role in the deformation at the center of indentations.

Molecular Dynamics Modeling the Nano-Identation of Titanium

Abstract:Titanium alloys' excellent mechanical and physical properties make it the most popular material widely used in aerospace, medical, nuclear and other significant industries. The study of titanium alloys mainly focused on the macroscopic mechanical mechanism. However, very few researches addressed the nano-sfructure of titanium alloys and its mechanical response in Nano-machining due to the difficulty to perform and characterize nano-machining experiment. Compared with nano-machining, nano-indentation is easier to characterize the microscopic plasticity of titanium alloys. This research presents a nano-indentation molecular dynamics model in titanium to address its microstructure alteration, plastic deformation and other mechanical response at the atomistic scale. Based on the molecular dynamics model, a complete nano-indentation cycle, including the loading and unloading stages, is performed by applying Large-scale Atomic/Molecular Massively Parallel Simulator(LAMMPS). The plastic deformation mechanism of nano-indentation of titanium with a rigid diamond ball tip was studied under different indentation velocities. At the same time, the influence of different environment temperatures on the nano-plastic deformation of titanium is analyzed under the condition of constant indentation velocity. The simulation results show that the Young's modulus of pure titanium calculated based on nano-indentation is about 110GPa, which is very close to the experimental results. The results also show that the mechanical behavior of titanium can be divided into three stages: elastic stage, yield stage and plastic stage during the nano-indentation process. In addition, indentation speed has influence on phase transitions and nucleation of dislocations in the range of 0.1-1.0 angstrom/ps.

Abstract:The relationship between crystal orientations and meso-mechanical properties of beta phase Ti-7333 titanium was investigated through the combination of nanoindentation experiments and simulation. The crystal plasticity finite element (CPFE) model for nanoindentation of single body-centered cubic crystal was established based on the experimental data. And the crystal plasticity constitutive law was implemented to simulate the nanoindentation process, obtaining satisfied results with an acceptable error. From the simulated pileup morphology patterns with different crystal orientations, it was found that the beta phase experienced a symmetrical and orientation-related deformation process. Meanwhile, the strain-rate sensitivity (SRS) of beta phase was investigated through nanoindentation tests based on continuous stiffness measurement (CSM) under different strain rates, varying between 0.2, 0.05 and 0.01 s(-1). Two grains with different orientations exhibited similar SRS exponents, m, calculated from the experimental results.

Abstract:In this work, the crystal plasticity finite element (CPFE) simulations and experiments of nanoindentation and tensile tests are conducted to obtain the load–displacement curves of primary α grains and the true stress–true strain curves of equiaxed β aggregate, respectively. The satisfying agreement of the experimental and simulated curves demonstrates that proposed strategy could successfully identify the crystal plasticity constitutive parameters for Ti-7333 alloy, as well as for other near-β titanium alloy. Based on simulated results, the activation of slip systems and the ratio of critical resolved shear stress of basal slip to prismatic slip in primary α grains are discussed. The evolution of geometrically necessary dislocation density during tensile deformation is investigated. These results not only provide accurate parameters for mechanical behavior prediction of Ti-7333 alloy by CPFE simulations, but also contribute to further understandings in deformation mechanism of titanium.

Abstract:Within the rate-independent crystal plasticity framework, a constitutive model was constructed to describe the uniaxial tension of polycrystalline titanium alloy at ambient temperature by considering crystallographic slip as the main deformation mechanism. The three-dimensional (3D) Voronoi tessellation (VT) geometric model was used to create the polycrystalline aggregates for initial microstructure. Based on the model, the effects of polycrystalline aggregate features on the macroscopic mechanical responses were discussed. Results show that the size differences of the three directions in polycrystalline aggregates will lead to the anisotropies of the stress-strain responses in the three directions, wherein the necking phenomenon appears in the long length direction. Besides, it is found that the grain morphology and orientation have significant influences on stress-strain responses as well. The proposed model for single phase titanium alloy provides important informations for the microstructure controlling and the optimization of process parameters.

Abstract:In this study, depth sensing nano-indentation test was carried out to investigate the plastic/viscoplastic behavior of beta titanium alloy. The indentation experiment results showed that both hardening and softening effect existed in indentation process and the residual penetration depth was deeper when the nominal indentation strain rate increased. That is opposite to the room temperature tension test results, which showed a strain rate hardening behavior. FEM simulation combined with viscoplastic model was carried out to simulate the indentation procedure. FEM results showed that the pile-up pattern changed with the consideration of the nominal indentation strain rate effect. Atom force microscope (AFM) observation gave a same result of pile-up patterns.

Abstract:Based on the rate-dependent crystal plasticity theory, a finite element code which considers crystallographic slip as deformation mechanism of material was developed to investigate the stress–strain response of the β phase of Ti-5553 during uniaxial tension. Three dimensional models with random grain shapes generated by Voronoi tessellation were used for simulations, and two discretization methods were used to disperse the models. Firstly, the parameters of material were identified by fitting simulation stress-strain curves with experimental data. Then the global stress-strain curves were calculated, and effects of mesh type and mesh density were discussed. Results show that mesh type has a relatively significant influence on overall responses, whereas the influence of mesh density is slight. Investigate of local stress-strain response in each grain was also conducted, and obvious inter-granular heterogeneities were observed. Quantitative analysis indicates that the range of stress and strain variations is affected by mesh type.

Abstract:This study employed nano-indentation technology, molecular dynamics simulation, and experimental investigation to examine the stress relaxation behaviour of a polycrystalline γ-TiAl alloy. The simulation enabled the generation of a load-time curve, the visualisation of internal defect evolution, and the mapping of stress distribution across each grain during the stress relaxation stage. The findings indicate that the load remains stable following an initial decline, thereby elucidating the underlying mechanism of load change during stress relaxation. Furthermore, a nano-indentation test was conducted on the alloy, providing insight into the load variation and stress relaxation behaviour under different loading conditions. By comparing the simulation and experimental results, this study aims to guide the theoretical research and practical application of γ-TiAl alloys.

Abstract:In order to investigate the effect of crystallographic orientation on the nano-indentation behaviors of single crystal super alloys, the nano-indentation experiments were carried out using a Berkovich indenter with an atomic force microscope. The specimens are nickel based single crystal super alloys with crystallographic orientations of [001], [011] and [1 1 1]. Experimental results show that the indentation load-depth curve, hardness and elastic modulus are remarkably influenced by crystallographic orientation. It is found that the shape and volume fraction of gamma' strengthening phase are dependent on crystallographic orientation, which will influence the mechanical properties. The nano-indentation experiments performed on three typical crystallographic orientations are simulated by crystal plasticity theory to investigate the indentation responses and the resolved shear stress, and the simulation results show a good agreement with the experiment results.

Abstract:A Berkovich indentation test was performed in a single primary α-phase grain of an equiaxed TC6 titanium alloy, to reveal the complex local lattice-rotation process under nano-indentation loading. Numerical simulations using an in-house-developed crystal plasticity finite element method code were also conducted. A high-resolution inverse pole figure of a slice across the nano-indention was obtained via the focused ion beam technique coupled with precession electron diffraction. The simulation results corresponded closely to the experimental observations. In the slice, the region beneath the indentation inner-edge and the region beneath the indentation facet underwent the greatest degree and the second-greatest degree of lattice rotation, respectively. In contrast, for the region directly below the indentation center, the lattice rotated first, but the orientation changed only slightly during the entire process. The bright field transmission electron microscopy and the geometrically necessary dislocation densities provided experimental confirmation of such orientation features. Furthermore, the nucleation and continuous growth process of subgrains was numerically predicted by virtually tracking the misorientation angle (>10°) map at different indentation depths in three-dimensional space. Thereafter, the evolution of each slip system type was captured at typical local regions of the indentation, leading to an in-depth understanding of the underlying mechanism.

Abstract:γ-TiAl alloy is a representative material for new lightweight and high-temperature resistant structures. The study of γ-TiAl alloys using the nanoindentation technique is instructive for improving room-temperature brittle defects. In this paper, we used the molecular dynamics method to simulate the nanoindentation process of polycrystalline γ-TiAl alloy at room temperature to obtain the hardness and Young's modulus of the workpiece. The microstructural evolutionary behaviors at different stages of the indentation process were also analyzed to reveal the plastic deformation mechanism of polycrystalline γ-TiAl alloy subjected to load impact. The results show that the hardness of the workpiece decreases with the increase of the press depth due to the larger space for atoms to move at the grain boundaries; the predominance of Shockley incomplete dislocation reactions within the grains during loading, and the restriction of the surrounding grain boundaries; the stress reduction inside the workpiece during unloading leads to defect annihilation, and the released energy is transferred through grain boundaries to promoting misshapen laminar nucleation of other grains. The nanoindentation experimental study of polycrystalline γ-TiAl alloy was conducted to analyze the mechanical property response of the workpiece under different indentation loads, which obtained a slight increase in folding modulus with increasing contact depth and a significant decrease in hardness with increasing contact depth. The variation of the hardness–depth curve has the same trend as the simulation, reflecting the significant indentation size effect of the γ-TiAl alloy.
Characterization of Grain Boundary Deformation Processes in Commercial Purity Titanium Using Nanoindentation and Crystal Plasticity Modeling

Abstract:The nature of plastic deformation across grain boundaries in α-titanium has been studied using instrumented sphero-conical nanoindentation in complement with crystal plasticity modeling. Following crystal orientation mapping using electron backscattered diffraction, indention was preformed (i) in the center of grains to mimic single crystal indentation and (ii) near grain boundaries to carry out bicrystal experiments. The pile-up topography that forms as a function of nanoindentation axis was characterized using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Crystal plasticity fi nite element simulations were carried out iteratively by varying the slip parameters until a best fi t was found between the experimentally measured single crystal pile-up topographies and the simulated single crystal pile-up topographies of several orientations. AFM characterization of bicrystal nanoindents revealed changes in the pileup topographies compared to those for single crystal nanoindents carried out in the same grain. In general, the pile-up topographies were not strongly infl uenced by low angle grain boundaries, indicating signifi cant strain transfer across the boundaries. In contrast, many high angle boundaries strongly infl uenced the pile-up morphology, with changes in the pile-ups noted in both the grain containing the pile-up and in the neighboring grain. The ability to accurately simulate the infl uence of grain boundaries pile-up development was examined by carrying out CPFE simulations of bicrystal nanoindentation. Direct comparison of the AFM-measured topographies with simulated topographies reveals that the general nature of bicrystal pile-up topography is well simulated, but that in general, the measured pile-up transfer is somewhat smaller than the simulated pile-up transfer. The results of the study will be discussed in terms of a number of generalized slip transfer criteria. Abstract:The incompatibility of plastic deformation in a near β titanium alloy with (α + β) two phases microstructure was analyzed based on the crystal plasticity finite element (CPFE) model. The bicrystal simulation results show that the plastic deformation in the (α + β) two phases microstructure is incompatible, and the deformation behavior of α phase is significantly affected by the crystal orientation and loading direction. In addition, through coupling with three-dimensional (3D) Voronoi tessellation (VT) geometric model, the effect of globular primary α phase in the β matrix on the macroscopic mechanical response was discussed. Based on the CPFE-VT model, it is found that the incompatibility of plastic deformation between the α and β phases can result in a linear reduction of the macroscopic strength with the increase of the volume fraction of α phase. Furthermore, the distribution of primary α phase also plays an important role in the stress-strain response. The proposed model for near β titanium alloy can yield important informations for the microstructure controlling and the performance prediction.

Abstract:The deformation and load partitioning mechanisms among phases are critical to the detailed understanding of heterogeneous stress distributions at the submicron scale during the process of elastic-plastic transformation in dual-phase (α+β) titanium alloys. Therefore, in this work, a Ti-5.5Mo-7.2Al-4.5Zr-2.6Sn-2.1Cr titanium alloy was investigated via in-situ high energy X-ray diffraction. We examined the evolution of the lattice strain, peak intensity, and full width at half maximum under uniaxial tensile loading at room temperature. The results indicated that the stress-induced (0002)α→(110)β transformation can be preferentially initiated for lattice strains of 702 × 10−6–1500 × 10−6 and 592 × 10−6–1355 × 10−6 during the elastic loading stage of the {0002}α and {110}β reflections, respectively. In addition, various dog-bone-shaped specimens with interrupted strain amplitudes (0.3%, 3%, 5% and 8.5%) were characterized via transmission electron microscopy. The corresponding selected area electron diffraction pattern confirmed the occurrence of a (0002)α//(110)β Burgers orientation relationship when the alloy was subjected to a strain of ε = 0.3%. Furthermore, the results revealed that the anisotropic non-linear response of specific reflections (i.e., the (0002)α and (110)β reflections) will cause a phase transformation.

Abstract:Polycrystalline NiTi shape memory alloys (SMAs) are inevitably involved in plastic deformation under the action of an external force, thus significantly affecting the mechanical behaviour of materials. To deeply understand the plastic deformation mechanism of the NiTi SMA at 400 °C, the representative volume element (RVE) model combined with the crystal plastic finite element method and the improved Voronoi algorithm were used to construct a three-dimensional polycrystalline spherical nanoindentation model for studying the contribution of different slip systems to the plastic deformation. The calculation results show that the constructed polycrystalline model can well match the experimental curve of the macroscopic stressstrain response curve of the polycrystalline NiTi SMA; the nanoindentation curve also confirms this result. Based on the constructed 3D polycrystalline nanoindentation model, three slip systems ({110} , {010} and {110} ) were introduced at the same time. According to the average cumulative shear strain calculated during the indentation process, the results show that the {110} slip system provides the largest contribution to plastic deformation, and the {010} slip mode provides the smallest contribution. The elastic modulus of the model was calculated using the Oliver-Pharr method, and the calculated results are consistent with the experimental results, which proves the validity of the model.

Abstract:A meso-scale numerical constitutive model was established by the theory of crystal plasticity and the finite element method to describe the mechanical behavior of the hexagonal close-packed (hcp) metal. Based on this model, the one-way tensile experiment on a single crystal of titanium at elevated temperature was simulated. The simulated results are consistent with the experimental ones, indicating that the model is reliable. The calculated results also reveal the action of each slip system in deformation process of single crystal titanium. The meso-scale deformation evolution, including grid slipping and crystal lattice reorientation, during the tensile deformation was also analyzed.
