Abstract:The removal of cobalt by chemical pretreatment is a necessary step in the preparation of diamond coatings on cemented carbide (WC-Co) tools. In this study, the “Acid-Murakami-Acid” (AMA) three-step pretreatment process for cemented carbide with different Co content of 6%, 8% and 12% was systematically studied. These results revealed that acid treatment played an important role in removing Co: the higher content of Co in the original substrates, the longer acid-treating time is required. The etching capacity of WC by Murakami showed a trend of the first increasing and then decreasing. While the etching time of the Murakami solution increased, more Co elements were exposed and easier to be completely removed. And then tended to stabilize and achieve the maximum exposed amount at 3min. These results showed that the diamond coatings with good adhesive strength can be obtained on the WC−6%/8%/12%Co substrates surface interacted with the proper AMA treatment. Combining with SEM and Raman analysis, the diamond grains display uniform and dense morphology and good octahedron crystal quality.
