Abstract:A simple method is presented for measuring the refractive index of air, which uses two frequency-doubling crystals as optical components of an interferometer. It is based on a two-colour method utilizing a fundamental wave of a laser-diode-pumped YAG laser and its second-harmonic wave. Their waves are input into another frequency-doubling crystal for generating interference fringes. The refractive index of air is measured with a resolution better than 1 × 10-7 at a travelling distance near 50 cm.

Abstract:It is a radical but pressing problem to measure the group refractive index of dispersive material both accurately and rapidly in optical engineering field. In this paper, a white-light spectral interferometric system employing a fiber-optic spectrometer is developed for solving this problem. The system takes advantage of the characteristic of fiber-optic spectrometer which can get all the interferometric information by a single shot image without any mechanical scanning. Compared with the traditional windowed Fourier transform, a wavelet transform algorithm is used to directly extract the group delay rather than the phase from the interferogram. Therefore, the new method can provide a simple and fast solution, while still maintaining high accuracy. Based on this white-light Michelson interferometric system, fused silica and BK7 glass samples are measured respectively and the results agree well with the theoretical values over a broad spectral range. At the end of this paper, different mirror positions are used to verify the repeatability of our method.

Abstract:Optical frequency combs have become an essential tool for distance metrology, showing great advantages compared with traditional laser interferometry. However, there is not yet an appropriate method for air refractive index correction to ensure the high performance of such techniques when they are applied in air. In this study, we developed a novel heterodyne interferometry technique based on two-colour frequency combs for air refractive index correction. In continuous 500-second tests, a stability of 1.0 × 10−11 was achieved in the measurement of the difference in the optical distance between two wavelengths. Furthermore, the measurement results and the calculations are in nearly perfect agreement, with a standard deviation of 3.8 × 10−11 throughout the 10-hour period. The final two-colour correction of the refractive index of air over a path length of 61 m was demonstrated to exhibit an uncertainty better than 1.4 × 10−8, which is the best result ever reported without precise knowledge of environmental parameters.

Abstract:High-accuracy self-correction of air refractive index was demonstrated with simultaneous measurement of group and phase indices. Using precise detection of the pulse envelope and the carrier phase with an optical frequency comb interferometer, a method similar to the two-color correction method was applied, but using a light source in a single wavelength region. In this study, air refractive index correction was successfully demonstrated with standard deviation of 8.1 x 10(-8) when the refractive index change was 0.7 x 10(-6).

Abstract:A new two-color heterodyne interferometer using an optical grating was proposed for measuring the refractive index of air. The heterodyne modulation is realized by moving the diffraction grating. The method allows us to measure the refractive index with high accuracy by using a 1.06μm YAG laser and its second-harmonic wave because two beams (the fundamental and the second-harmonic wave) are in common path completely. Moreover, good signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) can be obtained by the heterodyne interference. Using the refractive index calculated by Edlén's equation as a reference, that measured by present method was experimentally evaluated having an accuracy of about 1×10−6 within a distance of 100 mm.

Abstract:A group-phase refractive index method was developed for improving the accuracy of a conventional two-color method used in an interferometer for length measurements. This method uses two closer wavelengths to reduce the errors caused by air turbulence and the chromatic aberration. We describe the new method and demonstrate preliminarily its effectiveness by measuring the group refractive index of air using a vacuum cell. We then compared the results with those calculated using the Edlén equation. The mean difference between the measured and calculated values was 2.15×10−6 with a standard deviation of 2.0×10−6 for the vacuum cell with a length of 184.5 mm.

Abstract:The error resulted from air refractive index should be corrected in-situ for the high accuracy measurement. A concept named as an equivalent synthetic wave is presented, based on which a novel air refractometer is developed. It has two virtual waves by adopting two vacuum chambers with different lengths. This air refractometer takes the advantages of compact structure and the ability of real-time correction of air refractive index in high accuracy measurement. The resolution of the refractometer is 1×10~(-8), and the experiment results comparing with the method of Edlen equation showing that the apparatus has good stability with an accuracy better than 1×10~(-7).

Abstract:The absolute group refractive index of air at 194061.02 GHz is measured in real time using frequency-sweeping interferometry calibrated by an optical frequency comb. The group refractive index of air is calculated from the calibration peaks of the laser frequency variation and the interference signal of the two beams passing through the inner and outer regions of a vacuum cell when the frequency of a tunable external cavity diode laser is scanned. We continuously measure the refractive index of air for 2 h, which shows that the difference between measured results and Ciddor's equation is less than 9.6×10-8, and the standard deviation of that difference is 5.9×10-8. The relative uncertainty of the measured refractive index of air is estimated to be 8.6×10-8. The data update rate is 0.2 Hz, making it applicable under conditions in which air refractive index fluctuates fast.

Abstract:The absolute group refractive index of air at 1563 nm is measured by dispersive interferometry, and a combined uncertainty of 1.2 × 10(-8) is achieved. The group refractive index of air is calculated from the dispersive interferograms of the two beams passing through the inner and outer regions of a vacuum cell by fast-Fourier-transform. Experimental results show that the discrepancies between our method and modified Edlén equation are less than 3.43 × 10(-8) and 4.4 × 10(-8) for short-term and long-term experiments, respectively. The interferogram update rate is 15 ms, which makes it suitable for application of real-time monitoring. Furthermore, it is promising to improve the measurement uncertainty to 3.0 × 10(-9) by changing the material of the vacuum cell and measuring its length more accurately through optical interferometry.

Abstract:GaAs and Sapphire Crystal has been widely used in infrared region,optoelectronics field and military equipment,so the measurement of refractive index of two materials is of great significance to optical design,metrological inspection and industrial application.To improve the measurement accuracy of refractive index of two materials,microchip laser feedback interferometer technology was used to simultaneously measure refractive index and thickness.The system combined heterodyne modulation and quasi-common path to compensate for airflow and vibration,so it has the characteristics of high sensitivity,high precision and high stability,especially the simultaneous measurement and only the material needs to be processed into flake rather than prism shape.The experimental results demonstrate that the measurement accuracy of refractive index of GaAs and Sapphire Crystal(under ordinary light)has been enhanced to 10-3 and 10-4 respectively and thickness is 10-4 mm.

Abstract:In order to measure the group refractive index and thickness of birefringent crystals simultaneously, a method based on spectral-domain interferometry is proposed. The optical path of each reflection layer of birefringent crystal is converted into spectral interference fringe of corresponding frequency by the principle of spectral-domain interferometry, and the accurate optical path calculation is realized by fast Fourier transform and Hanning-windowed energy centrobaric method. A two-step measurement method was designed to measure the crystal thickness and group refractive index of ordinary(o) and extraordinary(e) light synchronously by comparing the changes of the optical path before and after the insertion of the sample. The comparison between experimental and theoretical results of LiNbO3 crystals shows that the accuracy of the thickness measured by this system is better than 1μm and the relative error of the group refractive index is better than 0.15%. The measurement method is simple to implement and has high precision, which is of practical significance for realizing the rapid and high-precision measurement of optical parameters of birefringent crystals.

Abstract:Conventional optical refractometry methods are often limited by a narrow measurement range, complex hardware, or relatively high cost. Here, we present a novel refractometry method to measure the bulk refractive index (RI) of materials (including solids and liquids) using lensless holographic on-chip imaging and autofocusing, which is simple, cost-effective, and has a large RI measurement range. As a proof of concept, two compact prototypes were built to measure the RIs of solid materials and liquids, respectively, and they were tested by measuring the RIs of a ZnSe plate and a microscopy immersion oil. Experimental results show that our devices have an average accuracy of similar to 3 x 10(-4) RI unit (RIU) with an estimated precision of similar to 3 x 10(-3) RIU for solids; and an average accuracy of similar to 1 x 10(-4) RIU with an estimated precision of similar to 3 x 10(-4) RIU for liquids. We believe that this cost-effective and portable RI measurement platform holds promise to be used in laboratory and industrial settings. Abstract:We present broadband cavity-enhanced complex refractive index spectroscopy (CE-CRIS), a technique for calibration-free determination of the complex refractive index of entire molecular bands via direct measurement of transmission modes of a Fabry-Perot cavity filled with the sample. The measurement of the cavity transmission spectrum is done using an optical frequency comb and a mechanical Fourier transform spectrometer with sub-nominal resolution. Molecular absorption and dispersion spectra (corresponding to the imaginary and real parts of the refractive index) are obtained from the cavity mode broadening and shift retrieved from fits of Lorentzian profiles to the individual cavity modes. This method is calibration-free because the mode broadening and shift are independent of the cavity parameters such as the length and mirror reflectivity. In this first demonstration of broadband CE-CRIS we measure simultaneously the absorption and dispersion spectra of three combination bands of CO2 in the range between 1525 nm and 1620 nm and achieve good agreement with theoretical models. This opens up for precision spectroscopy of the complex refractive index of several molecular bands simultaneously.

Abstract:A Mach-Zehnder interferometer based on single-mode-multimode-thin-core-single-mode fiber structure is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for measuring refractive index and temperature simultaneously. The transmission dips of the sensor will shift when the ambient refractive index and temperature change, so it is possible to measure the refractive index and temperature by monitoring the wavelength shifts of the two transmission dips due to different interference orders. The experimental results show that the sensing sensitivities of refractive index and temperature are -18.1764 nm/RIU and 0.0733 nm/RIU within the refractive index range from 1.3105 to 1.3517 and the temperature range from 25 degrees C to 50 degrees C, respectively. Its cost effectiveness, robustness and easy fabrication will have attractive potential applications in chemical and biological sensing.

Abstract:Air refractive index alteration is an important research technique used to examine blast density and pressure. However, precise time-course measurements of refractive index changes at a fixed point caused by air blast waves are challenging due to the necessity for high precision and noise immunity. This study proposes a dual-probe, dual-frequency fiber-optic displacement interferometer that achieves nanometer-level accuracy and can tolerate light intensity fluctuations and transmission-fiber interference. The specially designed sensor enables the measurement of refractive index at a fixed point resulting from explosive-driven air blast waves, further allowing for obtaining the pressure and density information.

Abstract:In this paper, we report on new high-precision absolute distance measurements performed with frequency scanned interferometry using a pair of single-mode optical fibers. Absolute distances were determined by counting the interference fringes produced while scanning the frequencies of the two chopped lasers. High-finesse Fabry-Perot interferometers were used to determine frequency changes during scanning. Dual lasers with oppositely scanning directions, combined with a multi-distance-measurement technique previously reported, were used to cancel drift errors and to suppress vibration effects and interference fringe uncertainties. Under realistic conditions, a precision about 0.2 microns was achieved for a distance of 0.41 meters.
