The Empirical Study of Patriotism in International Academics

Abstract:In recent decades, by defining patriotism as a psychological concept, the international academic community has made it jump out of the ideological quagmire and become the object of political science research.Based on the conceptual construction and measurement optimization, the empirical research has achieved fruitful results, and has reached a number of important consensus. Compared with nationalism, patriotism is a different form of national attachment and is more sound. Patriotism is a multi-dimensional concept rather than a singledimensional concept. The constructive dimension is more benign than the blind and symbolic dimension. However,the concept construction and measurement, typological discussion of the popular concept, theoretical interpretation and research methods still need to be improved. What’s more noteworthy is that the research in this field is still centered on the unique understanding of European and American cultures, and lacks cross-regional and multithematic discussion. Domestic research should fully absorb the existing experience and lessons of the academic community, pay attention to the perspective and logic of the general public, construct more reasonable concepts and measurement tools, and promote scientific and systematic empirical research.
