Abstract:The notion of the “Self” is one of the most critical issues in contemporary cognitive science. Whether the self is a single and independent real entity or a collection of constantly changing experiences has been at the core of debates between the substance theory and the illusion theory. Compared to the neglect of this issue in Western tradition studies, the meticulous practice of mindfulness/awareness in Eastern research traditions has long focused on this contradiction. This paper navigates the intricate dimensions of the “Self” by weaving together the Oriental framework of the five aggregates with the Middle Way, the principles of constructivism, and the empirical methodologies of experimental philosophy. This approach bridges the gap by synthesizing introspective first-person experiences with objective third-person scientific observations to enrich the understanding of self-constructivism. The implications of these findings extend into the practical realms of psychology and philosophy, offering a scaffold for future research to elucidate the multifaceted nature of the self further.

Abstract:The I or the self is the most intimate and familiar phenomena, but it is one of the most perplexing phenomenon in our intellectual life. The mind science has deeply studied various aspects of mental agents such as intentionality, perception, behavior, memory, learning, image, emotion, thinking, language, imagination, unconscious and even consciousness, however, unless tied closely with the notion of the self, all the aspects of mind mentioned above can be significatively talked about. At the same time, we have to immediately emphasize that the self is not a pole of entity like homunculus. So we argue that the self can be understood just from a perspective of structure. Human ordinary experience shows that the self primarily begins with a kind of living phenomena. F. Maturana J. Varela described the general structure of the self as a living being in terms of the notion of autopoeisis. The most basic feature of living beings—even the simplest live beings—is that living beings are autonomous individuals which have built a kind of the most primitive relationship of intentionality or meaning with the world. There are different morphologies of self in the evolutionary and developmental different levels of life-mind. The unified sense of self is the most direct experience in human ordinary life, which our knowledge of the self starts from. Unlike the self as a pure living being, how does the self with the sense of self come to being? A. Dmamasio argues that the neurobiology of consciousness faces two problems: the problem of how the movie-in-the-brain is generated, and the problem of how the brain generates the sense that there is an observer and owner for the movie, namely the sense of self. How are feelings embodied?—it is central to the current study of neural self. The perplexity from the self not only consists in the inherent particularity, but also the particular circulation relationship between the self and the world. Only when the circulation relationship is understood well, we can completely grasp the nature of self.

Abstract:This theme issue aims to view the literature on concepts through a novel lens, that of social interaction and its influence on inner experiences. It discusses unsolved problems in literature on concepts, emphasizing the distinction between concrete versus abstract concepts and external versus internal grounding. This introductory article reflects the two research streams that the theme aims to bridge-in this area, the dimension of embodied interaction with others and how this influences the interaction with ourselves is still underexplored. In the first part, we discuss recent trends in social cognition, showing how interacting with others influences our concepts. In the second part, we address how social interactions become part of our inner world in a Vygotskian fashion. First, we illustrate how interoception, emotion and metacognition are connected with concepts and knowledge. Second, we deal with how language, in both its outer and inner form, can empower cognition and concepts. We also briefly describe how novel experimental and computational methods contribute to investigating the online use of concepts. Overall, this introductory article outlines the potentialities of an integrated and interactive approach that can give new, fresh life to a topic, that of concepts, which lies at the root of human cognition. This article is part of the theme issue 'Concepts in interaction: social engagement and inner experiences'.

Unconscious social integration: seeing social interactions between two invisible people

Abstract:One central question in the scientific and philosophical study of consciousness is regarding the scope of human consciousness. There remains lively debate whether high-level information integration is necessarily dependent on consciousness, or it could occur beyond the scope of consciousness. The current study discovered a novel type of unconscious high-level integration based on social interactions between two agents. By adopting a breaking continuous flash suppression paradigm, Experiments 1a & 1b found that two facing (and thus interactive) human heads broke through into awareness faster than non-facing (and thus non-interactive) pairs, indicating a privileged unconscious processing of social interactions. Experiments 2a and 2b showed that this effect was significantly diminished when the integration between two agents was disrupted by separating into single individuals or inverted presentation, suggesting that the unconscious priority of interactive pairs was a product of integration effect. Experiments 3a-3c demonstrated that the integration was driven by social interaction specifically, as it could only be observed for social agents but not for non-social daily objects or directional arrows. The demonstrations of unconscious social integration shown here suggest that the processing of social interactions has already occurred before conscious awareness, and thus provide a novel case for high-level integration without consciousness. These findings have critical implications in better understanding the scope of human consciousness as well as the origins of social vision.

Abstract:In principle, two domains of temporal control in human behavior and cognition can be distinguished, i.e., long-term mechanisms as observed in circadian or circannual rhythms reflecting evolutionary adaptations to geophysical cycles, and self-organized mechanisms as mainly exhibited for short-term intervals in the sub-second to minutes domain. It is an open question whether the mechanisms of temporal control within and also across the temporal domains are inter-dependent, thus, reflecting one dominant temporal control machinery, or whether temporal control within and across the different temporal domains underlies independent operative principles. One way to get more insight in these problems is to manipulate environmental variables, and to investigate whether such manipulations show similar or distinct effects on temporal control; one class of such environmental variables are represented by social interactions.

Abstract:Based on the hypothesis that the selfhood is the last outpost of sociality within a person, consciousness and the self are considered as complex spiritual and material phenomena, they include at least three main components: neurobiological activity, intimate personal environment and social context. The author analyzes an internal materialistic perspective, which infers the reduction of self and consciousness to ordinary neural processes of the brain. With this perspective, the main thing for neural activity is to maintain homeostasis, first, within the brain itself, and then within the organism as a whole. Based on the latest achievements of neuroscience and the constructions of neurophilosophy, the impossibility of a significant accentuation of the production of the self against the background of the default activity of brain activity is demonstrated. The concept of protoconsciousness is introduced. In its context, it is shown that even the simplest ones can use complex algorithms for processing information, correcting behavioral errors to ensure effective existence in the life world intended for them. As a result – there is an integrative behavior, when one or another of its elements is not just a single reaction to a stimulus but formed as a result of the execution of a certain algorithm (of yet not clear structure and origin), data and commands for which come from several sources. Attention is drawn to the fact that even for a quite simple behavior there is need for some built-in spatio-temporal matrix which will be typologically similar to Kant’s forms of perception. From the standpoint of a materialistic perspective, it is proposed to consider rationality and the self, which is associated with it, as a kind of superstructure over the outconscious interaction with reality that our biological predecessors developed. However, both rationality and the self inevitably presuppose a return to sociality, without which neither the first nor the second can be conceived.

Abstract:Is selfhood socially constituted and distributed? Although the view has recently been defended by some cognitive scientists, it has long been popular within anthropology and cultural psychology. Whereas older texts by Marcel Mauss, Clifford Geertz, Hazel Rose Markus, and Shinobu Kitayama often contrast a Western conception of a discrete, bounded, and individual self with a non‐Western sociocentric conception, it has more recently become common to argue that subjectivity is a fluid intersectional construction fundamentally relational and conditioned by discursive power structures. I assess the plausibility of these claims and argue that many of these discussions of self and subjectivity remain too crude. By failing to distinguish different dimension of selfhood, many authors unwittingly advocate a form of radical social constructivism that is not only incapable of doing justice to first‐person experience but which also fails to capture the heterogeneity of real communal life.

Abstract:This article proposes a means for better understanding the self and consciousness. Data indicate that the basic "emotional brain" continually computes potential survival risk against reward to rank consequent "emotion scores" for all sensory inputs. These scores compete to yield winner-takes-all outcomes that determine the choice of attention or action. This mechanism prevails regardless of whether the competing options gain their emotion scores through a rational or an intuitive pathway. There is no need to postulate any homunculus or inner self in control of such choice; indeed, our belief in a first-person self in overall control is wrong. The self is a passive construct arising from each individual's social development, where language acquisition vastly heightens communication and awareness not only outwardly, but also inwardly, as if to a controlling "inner I." However, when society comes to hold the maturing being accountable for his or her actions, the brain must respond, and it does so in the only way it can, by deeming that this passive, inner self-construct act as if it were the active self in charge. Consciousness emerges when the language-based output of the higher brain is referred for ownership to this artificial self-construct.

Abstract:Theory &Psychology, Ahead of Print. Instead of bringing intellectual closure, the philosophical debate surrounding the nature of consciousness has found itself at an impasse. Extreme positions, from those denying the existence of consciousness to those who wish to imbue the entire universe with it, testify to the lack of common understanding of what consciousness is and how best it could be described and studied. In this paper, reality has its source in a subjective conscious field called the human information field, which is the only source of experience and whose centre is unknowable. Objective reality equals a consensus between individual fields, which underpins the stability and durability of social organisation. The conceptual importance of matter is due to its easy distinguishability from the self. The concept of the human information field offers answers to the hard and the "hardest" problems of consciousness, that is the explanatory gap between consciousness and its material apparatus and the ability of science to understand its own source, respectively. Its limitations constrain our ability to understand the world but are also the prime movers of exploration, development, and learning.

Spontaneous perception: a framework for task-free, self-paced perception

Abstract:Flipping through social media feeds, viewing exhibitions in a museum, or walking through the botanical gardens, people consistently choose to engage with and disengage from visual content. Yet, in most laboratory settings, the visual stimuli, their presentation duration, and the task at hand are all controlled by the researcher. Such settings largely overlook the spontaneous nature of human visual experience, in which perception takes place independently from specific task constraints and its time course is determined by the observer as a self-governing agent. Currently, much remains unknown about how spontaneous perceptual experiences unfold in the brain. Are all perceptual categories extracted during spontaneous perception? Does spontaneous perception inherently involve volition? Is spontaneous perception segmented into discrete episodes? How do different neural networks interact over time during spontaneous perception? These questions are imperative to understand our conscious visual experience in daily life. In this article we propose a framework for spontaneous perception. We first define spontaneous perception as a task-free and self-paced experience. We propose that spontaneous perception is guided by four organizing principles that grant it temporal and spatial structures. These principles include coarse-to-fine processing, continuity and segmentation, agency and volition, and associative processing. We provide key suggestions illustrating how these principles may interact with one another in guiding the multifaceted experience of spontaneous perception. We point to testable predictions derived from this framework, including (but not limited to) the roles of the default-mode network and slow cortical potentials in underlying spontaneous perception. We conclude by suggesting several outstanding questions for future research, extending the relevance of this framework to consciousness and spontaneous brain activity. In conclusion, the spontaneous perception framework proposed herein integrates components in human perception and cognition, which have been traditionally studied in isolation, and opens the door to understand how visual perception unfolds in its most natural context.

Abstract:Different thinking styles in Westerners and Chinese (analytic vs. holistic) lead to disparities between the two cultures not only in perception and attention but also in high-level social cognition such as self-representation. Most Western philosophers discussed the self by focusing on personal self-identity, whereas Chinese philosophers emphasized the relation between the self and others. Dissimilar philosophical thinking of the self is associated with distinct cognitive styles of self-representation (i.e., the independent self in Westerners and the interdependent self in Chinese). Recent brain imaging studies found that Westerners employed the medial prefrontal cortex to represent only the individual self, whereas Chinese utilized the same brain area to represent both the self and close others, providing neural basis of cultural differences in self-representation. We suggest that the cultural differences in thinking styles between Westerners and Chinese influence both psychological and neural structure of self-representation.

Abstract:Contemporary mind and brain sciences provide theories and data that seem to confirm a hypothesis about human nature that we might formulate as follows. Human life is conditioned by a need that is no less important than elementary biological needs (such as survival and reproduction) or universal forms of social competition: the need to build and, indeed, defend a subjective identity whose solidity and clarity are the foundation of our intra- and inter-personal equilibrium and therefore of psychological well-being and mental health. In this article, distancing ourselves from a neo-Cartesian position still prevalent in the philosophy of mind and approaching instead the outcomes of contemporary cognitive sciences, we sketch the complex interweaving of the cognitive, emotional, and affective elements that are constitutive of subjective identity, with a focus on the role played in self-identity construction by Theory-of-Mind abilities. We will suggest that, at every stage of self-construction, individuals engage in processes of understanding others that have a largely innate basis. In this perspective, a mature self-awareness is somewhat secondary to the knowledge of others, an evolutionarily refined acquisition primarily serving as a defense mechanism.
Partitioning the Perception of Physical and Social Events Within a Unified Psychological Space.

Abstract:Humans demonstrate remarkable abilities to perceive physical and social events based on very limited information (e.g., movements of a few simple geometric shapes). However, the computational mechanisms underlying intuitive physics and social perception remain unclear. In an effort to identify the key computational components, we propose a unified psychological space that reveals the partition between the perception of physical events involving inanimate objects and the perception of social events involving human interactions with other agents. This unified space consists of two prominent dimensions: an intuitive sense of whether physical laws are obeyed or violated; and an impression of whether an agent possesses intentions, as inferred from movements. We adopt a physics engine and a deep reinforcement learning model to synthesize a rich set of motion patterns. In two experiments, human judgments were used to demonstrate that the constructed psychological space successfully partitions human perception of physical versus social events.
