Abstract:How does the neural representation of visual working memory content vary with behavioural priority? To address this, we recorded electroencephalography (EEG) while subjects performed a continuous-performance 2-back working memory task with oriented-grating stimuli. We tracked the transition of the neural representation of an item (n) from its initial encoding, to the status of ‘unprioritized memory item' (UMI), and back to ‘prioritized memory item', with multivariate inverted encoding modelling. Results showed that the representational format was remapped from its initially encoded format into a distinctive ‘opposite' representational format when it became a UMI and then mapped back into its initial format when subsequently prioritized in anticipation of its comparison with item n + 2. Thus, contrary to the default assumption that the activity representing an item in working memory might simply get weaker when it is deprioritized, it may be that a process of priority-based remapping helps to protect remembered information when it is not in the focus of attention.

Abstract:This Research Topic brings together a collection of studies that discuss the complex relationships between cognitive processes and visual perception. Visual comprehension is a multifaceted cognitive task that necessitates the integration of attention, memory, and sensory information to form coherent representations of the visual world (Wyer Jr et al., 2008). These processes involve not only low-level perceptual mechanisms but also higher-order cognitive functions, such as decision-making and problem-solving, making it a vital area of study across disciplines (Jarecki et al., 2020). Understanding how the brain orchestrates these functions is essential for advancing research in fields such as neuroscience, psychology, artificial intelligence, and clinical applications (Bryck and Fisher, 2012). Moreover, research in visual comprehension has implications for the development of AI systems designed to mimic human-like perception and for creating clinical interventions aimed at enhancing cognitive function in individuals with impairments (Yildirim et al., 2024).The aim of this research topic was to investigate how cognitive systems (e.g., attention, and perception) operationalize the comprehension of visual structures, focusing on neural mechanisms, cognitive load, and memory processes. The contributing studies provide insights into the interaction between visual working memory, attention, and postural control, as well as the neural correlates of object recognition. These findings not only advance theoretical models of visual cognition but also offer potential applications in technology and clinical practice.

Constructing Gestalt in Visual Working Memory

Abstract:So far ample studies have demonstrated that VWM plays a critical role in several fundamental cognitive processes, such as perception, language processing, and planning. A critical factor that makes VWM so important is that VWM could "actively" maintain and manipulate the incoming information. However, so far most of the studies focus on a relatively "static" aspect of VWM, for instance, capacity, representation resolution, etc. Few studies have attempted to explore the active aspect of VWM. Here we investigated the active part of VWM by asking whether a Gestalt could be constructed in VWM based on the incoming information. Particularly, in a modified change detection task, we sequentially presented the memorized objects. Importantly, in 50% of trials these objects could form a virtual rectangle or triangle (i.e., a Gestalt) when they were presented simultaneously. We predicted that if the VWM could actively hold the visual information, then it will detect the relationship among the objects and construct a Gestalt based on the stored objects, which will help reduce the memory load. In line with this prediction, in 5 experiments we consistently found that when a potential Gestalt could be constructed among the memorized 3 or 4 objects, VWM performance was significantly improved. Visual Working Memory Organizes Functional Related Objects Beyond the Spatiotemporal Limit

Abstract:Functional relations can be directly “seen” and used to organize perceptual representations, but interactive positions are prerequisites for such perceptual grouping. The current study examined whether visual working memory (VWM) could automatically take advantage of functional relations in a more flexible way. In three experiments, participants were required to memorize a set of objects while ignoring the underlying relations between them. Results showed that although functional grouping was task-irrelevant, functional relations between objects could be extracted and used to enhance memory performance. More interestingly, functionally related objects could be grouped in the working memory phase even when they were not spatial interactive (Experiment 2). It was different from the perceptual grouping effect (Experiment 1) and reveals a unique memory grouping mode. Moreover, such functional grouping could still happen when object pairs entered VWM sequentially (Experiment 3), suggesting an active modification according to functional relations inside VWM. These findings suggest that VWM representations can be automatically structured through functional grouping, and grouping takes place in a flexible manner that can break the spatiotemporal constraints of perception.
Visual working memory for natural scenes: challenges and opportunities

Abstract:Visual working memory is a fundamental cognitive process that people use thousands of times each day as they engage in visually guided behavior. Thus, it is important to understand how the natural visual input-which consists of complex, spatially organized, continuously varying features-is represented in visual working memory. However, most research has used arrays of discrete, artificial objects defined by simple features, and existing formal models of visual working memory cannot be applied to natural scenes. In this paper, we identify 3 key aspects of natural scenes that are not captured by existing formal models of visual working memory, along with 2 distinct types of attention that must be considered. The goal is to clearly define the challenges and opportunities for moving models of visual working memory from arrays of artificial objects to natural scenes.

Abstract:Comprehensive understanding of visual scenes necessitates grasping the relations among visual objects. Given the potentially pivotal role of visual working memory (VWM) in processing visual relations, it is important to investigate the representation of relations in VWM. In our previous study, we proposed the integrated storage hypothesis, postulating that relations and objects are stored together as an integrated structured representation in VWM. The present study aimed to test this hypothesis against the alternative separate encoding hypothesis by probing the irrelevant-distracting effect. Across three experiments, where participants memorized object shapes/colors while disregarding relations, an irrelevant-distracting effect was consistently observed across varying types of changes in relation and set sizes. Critically, recombining the probe with irrelevant relation from another memory item (Experiment 2) or reversing the relational roles of probed objects relative to the memory item (Experiment 3) were perceived as inconsistency with stored representations and impaired change detection. These findings supported the integrated storage hypothesis, indicating that the dynamic relations between the objects are automatically encoded alongside object identities to form an integrated structured representation. The Working Memory Ponzo Illusion: Involuntary Integration of Visuospatial Information Stored in Visual Working Memory

Abstract:Visual working memory (VWM) has been traditionally viewed as a mental structure subsequent to visual perception that stores the final output of perceptual processing. However, VWM has recently been emphasized as a critical component of online perception, providing storage for the intermediate perceptual representations produced during visual processing. This interactive view holds the core assumption that VWM is not the terminus of perceptual processing; the stored visual information rather continues to undergo perceptual processing if necessary. The current study tests this assumption, demonstrating an example of involuntary integration of the VWM content, by creating the Ponzo illusion in VWM: when the Ponzo illusion figure was divided into its individual components and sequentially encoded into VWM, the temporally separated components were involuntarily integrated, leading to the distorted length perception of the two horizontal lines. This VWM Ponzo illusion was replicated when the figure components were presented in different combinations and presentation order. The magnitude of the illusion was significantly correlated between VWM and perceptual versions of the Ponzo illusion. These results suggest that the information integration underling the VWM Ponzo illusion is constrained by the laws of visual perception and similarly affected by the common individual factors that govern its perception. Thus, our findings provide compelling evidence that VWM functions as a buffer serving perceptual processes at early stages.
Attentional Mechanism for Organization in Visual Working Memory

Abstract:It has been suggested that visual working memory (VWM) is involved in integrating the sampled discrete information into a coherent visual percept. However, how this integration takes place in VWM for the sequentially processed information remains unclear. We recently demonstrated that VWM can realize and use potential Gestalt principles within the sequentially encoded representations: The closure and similarity cues among the sequentially presented objects significantly enhanced VWM performance relative to conditions without gestalt cues (Gao, Gao, Tang, Shui, & Shen, 2016, Organization principles in visual working memory: Evidence from sequential stimulus display. Cognition, 146, 277-288). In the current study, we examined (1) whether the VWM organization is an automatic process regardless of attention, (2) if VWM organization is a voluntary process, which type of attention plays a pivotal role. To this end, we displayed the to-be-memorized stimuli sequentially and in half of trials there were gestalt cues; critically, an attention-consuming task (visual search task for space-based attention or mental rotation task for object-based attention) was added into the maintenance phase of VWM. We predicted that if the VWM organization was an automatic process, the secondary task should affect the organization effect. If the VWM organization was a voluntary process, we predicted that the secondary task would erase the organization effect. Experiments 1 and 2 tested the role of attention underlying closure, and found that visual search task erased the organization effect while mental rotation task did not. Experiments 3 and 4 tested the role of attention underlying similarity, and found that mental rotation task erased the organization effect while visual search task did not. Together, we suggest that VWM organization is a voluntary process, yet the key attention is determined by the nature of the memorized stimuli. Meeting abstract presented at VSS 2017
Organization Principles in Visual Working Memory: Evidence from Sequential Stimulus Display

Abstract:Although the mechanisms of visual working memory (VWM) have been studied extensively in recent years, the active property of VWM has received less attention. In the current study, we examined how VWM integrates sequentially presented stimuli by focusing on the role of Gestalt principles, which are important organizing principles in perceptual integration. We manipulated the level of Gestalt cues among three or four sequentially presented objects that were memorized. The Gestalt principle could not emerge unless all the objects appeared together. We distinguished two hypotheses: a perception-alike hypothesis and an encoding-specificity hypothesis. The former predicts that the Gestalt cue will play a role in information integration within VWM; the latter predicts that the Gestalt cue will not operate within VWM. In four experiments, we demonstrated that collinearity (Experiment 1) and closure (Experiment 2) cues significantly improved VWM performance, and this facilitation was not affected by the testing manner (Experiment 3) or by adding extra colors to the memorized objects (Experiment 4). Finally, we re-established the Gestalt cue benefit with similarity cues (Experiment 5). These findings together suggest that VWM realizes and uses potential Gestalt principles within the stored representations, supporting a perception-alike hypothesis.
Storing fine detailed information in visual working memory--evidence from event-related potentials.

Abstract:Visual working memory (VWM) maintains and manipulates a limited set of visual objects being actively used in visual processing. To explore whether and how the fine detailed information is stored in VWM, four experiments have been conducted while recording the contralateral delay activity (CDA), an event-related potential difference wave that reflects the information maintenance in VWM. The type of the remembered information was manipulated by adopting simple objects and complex objects as materials. We found the amplitude of CDA was modulated by object complexity: as the set size of memory array rose from 2 to 4, the amplitude of CDA stopped increasing for maintaining complex objects with detailed information, while continued increasing for storing highly discriminable simple objects. These results suggest that VWM can store the fine detailed information; however it can not store all the fine detailed information from 4 complex objects. It implies that the capacity of VWM is not only characterized by a fixed number of objects, there is at least one stage influenced by the detailed information contained in the objects. These results are further discussed within a two-stage storing model of VWM: different types of perceptual information (highly discriminable features and fine detailed features) are maintained in VWM via two distinctive mechanisms.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:This study explored whether the high-resolution representations created by visual working memory (VWM) are constructed in a coarse-to-fine or all-or-none manner. The coarse-to-fine hypothesis suggests that coarse information precedes detailed information in entering VWM and that its resolution increases along with the processing time of the memory array, whereas the all-or-none hypothesis claims that either both enter into VWM simultaneously, or neither does.METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS:We tested the two hypotheses by asking participants to remember two or four complex objects. An ERP component, contralateral delay activity (CDA), was used as the neural marker. CDA is higher for four objects than for two objects when coarse information is primarily extracted; yet, this CDA difference vanishes when detailed information is encoded. Experiment 1 manipulated the comparison difficulty of the task under a 500-ms exposure time to determine a condition in which the detailed information was maintained. No CDA difference was found between two and four objects, even in an easy-comparison condition. Thus, Experiment 2 manipulated the memory array's exposure time under the easy-comparison condition and found a significant CDA difference at 100 ms while replicating Experiment 1's results at 500 ms. In Experiment 3, the 500-ms memory array was blurred to block the detailed information; this manipulation reestablished a significant CDA difference.CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE:These findings suggest that the creation of high-resolution representations in VWM is a coarse-to-fine process.
Integration of Ensemble Representations Stored in Visual Working Memory

Abstract:The "working" function of visual working memory (VWM) has been highlighted by recent studies. Findings demonstrated that the sequentially presented visual elements would be involuntarily integrated into visual objects or figures inside VWM, providing evidence that VWM functions as a buffer serving perceptual processes by storing the intermediate perceptual representations for further processing. In those studies, the number of visual elements was usually controlled within the capacity of VWM; however, the realistic environment we live in is so rich and complex that the visual system has to constantly deal with massive visual information. How is such enormous amount of information actually processed with limited VWM capacity? Notwithstanding researchers know that the visual system can extract statistical properties of crowds of objects to form ensemble representations, it is largely unclear whether and how ensemble representations integrate inside VWM. This issue was investigated in the present study. Participants viewed two temporally separated groups of discs, after a short time, they reported the memorized mean size of either one of the groups or the whole (i.e., all the discs in the two groups) by adjusting a probe disc. The results indicated that participants were able to report accurate mean size of each group and the whole set of discs, respectively. More importantly, the reported mean size of the whole could be predicted by the pooled mean calculated based on the reported means of two individual groups. This result suggested that the temporally separated ensemble representations stored in VWM are able to be integrated into a higher-level ensemble representation, using the perceived statistics of the crowds of objects. Thus, when the amount of objects exceeds the capacity of VWM, the visual system will chose to store the necessary statistics for describing the ensemble and supporting further statistical computation. Visual memory, the long and the short of it: A review of visual working memory and long-term memory

Abstract:The majority of research on visual memory has taken a compartmentalized approach, focusing exclusively on memory over shorter or longer durations, that is, visual working memory (VWM) or visual episodic long-term memory (VLTM), respectively. This tutorial provides a review spanning the two areas, with readers in mind who may only be familiar with one or the other. The review is divided into six sections. It starts by distinguishing VWM and VLTM from one another, in terms of how they are generally defined and their relative functions. This is followed by a review of the major theories and methods guiding VLTM and VWM research. The final section is devoted toward identifying points of overlap and distinction across the two literatures to provide a synthesis that will inform future research in both fields. By more intimately relating methods and theories from VWM and VLTM to one another, new advances can be made that may shed light on the kinds of representational content and structure supporting human visual memory.
Visual Working-Memory Capacity Load Does Not Modulate Distractor Processing

Abstract:Over the last decade, researchers have explored the influence of visual working-memory (WM) load on selective attention in general, by focusing on the modulation of visual WM load on distractor processing in perception. However, there were three distinct hypotheses (perceptual-load hypothesis, resolution hypothesis, and domain-specific hypothesis) with different predictions. While the perceptual-load hypothesis suggests that visual WM capacity load serves as a type of perceptual load, the latter two hypotheses consider visual WM capacity load acting as a type of central executive load, with a constraint that the domain-specific hypothesis claimed that only a content overlap existed between WM load and the perceptual task. By adding a flanker task into the maintenance phase of visual WM, here we attempted to understand the influence of visual WM load on distractor processing. We systematically manipulated the parameters of the task setting between WM and flanker tasks (Experiments 1–4), the perceptual load of flanker task (Experiment 5), the settings of the flanker stimuli and the WM load (Experiment 6), and the content overlap between WM task and flanker task and the exposure time of flanker task (Experiments 7, 8, and 9). However, in 11 out of 12 sub-experiments we consistently found that the visual WM load did not modulate the distractor processing. The implications of these findings are discussed.
The Perceptual Root of Object-Based Storage: an Interactive Model of Perception and Visual Working Memory.

Abstract:Mainstream theories of visual perception assume that visual working memory (VWM) is critical for integrating online perceptual information and constructing coherent visual experiences in changing environments. Given the dynamic interaction between online perception and VWM, we propose that how visual information is processed during visual perception can directly determine how the information is going to be selected, consolidated, and maintained in VWM. We demonstrate the validity of this hypothesis by investigating what kinds of perceptual information can be stored as integrated objects in VWM. Three criteria for object-based storage are introduced: (a) automatic selection of task-irrelevant features, (b) synchronous consolidation of multiple features, and (c) stable maintenance of feature conjunctions. The results show that the outputs of parallel perception meet all three criteria, as opposed to the outputs of serial attentive processing, which fail all three criteria. These results indicate that (a) perception and VWM are not two sequential processes, but are dynamically intertwined; (b) there are dissociated mechanisms in VWM for storing information identified at different stages of perception; and (c) the integrated object representations in VWM originate from the "preattentive" or "proto" objects created by parallel perception. These results suggest how visual perception, attention, and VWM can be explained by a unified framework.
Visual Working Memory Impairs Visual Detection: A Function of Working Memory Load or Sensory Load?

Abstract:Researchers have explored the influence of visual working memory (VWM) load on visual perception in the past decade. One of their key findings is that a high VWM load leads to reduced visual detection sensitivity to incoming visual stimuli. However, recent studies imply that persistent sensory processing continues after the memory array is offset. It is possible that the impaired visual detection is due to the sensory load of the residual sensory processing of the memory array (sensory load account) rather than the working memory load of the VWM task (VWM load account). We performed four experiments to examine the impacts on visual detection. Experiment 1 manipulated the retention time of the memory array while keeping the VWM load constant, revealing reduced visual detection along with retention time. Experiments 2 and 3 manipulated the VWM load while maintaining a constant sensory load, and visual detection was not affected. Experiment 4 affirmed that the findings in Experiments 1-3 were reliable. Together, the results of the current study suggest that the residual sensory load, rather than the VWM load of the VWM task, impairs visual detection. Abstract:The ability to briefly hold and manipulate object relations provides a foundation for interacting with our complex environment. Previous studies on working memory focused more on objects than their relations, which is disproportionate in the context of their theoretical importance. This study examined dynamic relations of objects to better understand the storage mechanism (capacity and representation) using a self-developed modified change detection paradigm, where an object moved dynamically, based on its relation to other objects. Eighty-four university students participated in four experiments (21 each), wherein they observed dynamic relations between objects presented on a display, memorized them, and reported whether the memorized relations were identical to the probatory relations. Results showed that visual working memory had an upper limitation of holding dynamic relations. When relations were independent of each other, the limitation was two; whereas in non-independent cases where different relations shared an object, memory accuracy decreased with increasing relations complexity, rather than with the number of objects or relations. Thus, dynamic relations are probably not stored as object features, nor stored independent of objects. More likely, relations and objects are represented in visual working memory as an integrated perceptual unit.

Abstract:The ability to sustain internal representations of the sensory environment beyond immediate perception is a fundamental requirement of cognitive processing. In recent years, debates regarding the capacity and fidelity of the working memory (WM) system have advanced our understanding of the nature of these representations. In particular, there is growing recognition that WM representations are not merely imperfect copies of a perceived object or event. New experimental tools have revealed that observers possess richer information about the uncertainty in their memories and take advantage of environmental regularities to use limited memory resources optimally. Meanwhile, computational models of visuospatial WM formulated at different levels of implementation have converged on common principles relating capacity to variability and uncertainty. Here we review recent research on human WM from a computational perspective, including the neural mechanisms that support it.
