Abstract:Catalytic ozonation is an efficient method for VOCs abatement at low temperature, in which the rational design of highly active heterogeneous catalysts constitutes the most significant step. In this study, Al2O3 was first optimized by loading MnOx . And then K was used for modifying MnOx/Al2O3 catalyst, which exhibited 2.2 × 10-3 mol·g-1·s-1 dichloromethane oxidation rate and 2.2 × 10-3 mol·g-1·s-1 toluene oxidation rate with ca. 0.89 ppm ozone detected at 80 oC. That could be directly applied for removing compound VOCs or coupled with other treatment technologies (such as biological purification). Besides, appropriate K doping could increase the amount of reactive surface oxygen species and the ratio of Mn2+, hence contributing to an enhanced oxidation ability. By contrast, an excess K doping inevitably lowered the activity of active surface oxygen species and interfered with the transformation of Mn3+ to Mn2+, which resulted in a worse oxidative ability thus a decreased catalytic activity. Furthermore, the reaction mechanisms over 0.1K-MnOx/Al2O3 were tried to be demonstrated that toluene mainly followed toluene – phenylcarbinol – benzaldehyde – benzoic acid – phenyl group – small-molecule species and/or CO2 while dichloromethane followed dichloromethane – methanol – formaldehyde – formic acid – small-molecule species and/or CO2. All of these findings may facilitate the design of novel heterogeneous catalysts for VOCs oxidation and progress the development of catalytic ozonation for compounds VOCs abatement.

Abstract:γ-MnO2, SmMnO3, and γ-MnO2/SmMnO3 catalysts were prepared by facile methods, wherein the SmMnO3 (SMO) perovskite was synthesized through one-step calcination and the γ-MnO2/SmMnO3 was formed by an in situ growth of γ-MnO2 on the surface of SMO. These materials ware characterized by XRD, SEM-mapping, N2-adsorption, XPS and H2-TPR to investigate their textural properties. Compared with that of SMO and γ-MnO2, the γ-MnO2/SMO shows better performance for catalytic oxidation of aromatic VOCs in wet air (10 vol.%), which may be attributed to its higher surface molar ratio of lattice oxygen to adsorbed oxygen (Olatt/Oads) and better low-temperature reducibility. Besides, for γ-MnO2/SMO catalyst, a successive oxidation route and the inner principle of BETX (benzene, ethylbenzene, toluene, and o-xylene) oxidation were also revealed via various tests and a comprehension of dynamics investigation. Meanwhile, the experiments under simulated realistic exhaust conditions displayed that the γ-MnO2/SmMnO3 is also a good catalyst with high stability for aromatic VOCs oxidation, and fulfilled endurability to high humidity (20 vol.%).
One-pot synthesis of dual-phase manganese dioxide for toluene removal: Effect of crystal phase blending level on oxygen species and activity

Abstract:A series of highly active manganese oxide with different oxygen species were synthesized by one pot method, wherein the active species were induced by in-situ combination of crystal phase. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) showed the successful combination of rodlike MnO2 and flowerlike MnO2. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) indicated an increase in the oxygen defects due to the in-situ assembly. Compared with that of pure α-MnO2 and β-MnO2, the combined-phase xα/yβ-MnO2 ((x, y represents the molar ratio of α and δ) presented the higher activities for the catalytic oxidation of toluene. Through the analysis of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and temperature-programmed reduction with hydrogen (H2-TPR) technologies, the order of catalytic activity was completely consistent with the change trend of the hydrogen consumption and the molar ratio of adsorbed oxygen/lattice oxygen (Oads/Olatt), showing that the high catalytic activities of catalysts were main attributed to their more low-valent manganese and high content of adsorbed oxygen. Moreover, the intermediates of toloune oxidation over α/β-MnO2 with the best catalytic activity were detected by in-situ diffuse reflectance FTIR spectroscopy (DRIFTS), and the by-products in the exhaust gases were detected by a thermal desorption/gas chromatograph mass spectrometer (TD/GC–MS), which confirmed the presence of the intermediates. Furthermore, the catalytic mechanism and degradation path of toluene oxidation have been studied in depth. Finally, the effect of moisture on catalytic activity of α/δ-MnO2 for toluene oxidation were also discussed.

Abstract:In this study, a series of Mn/ZSM-5 catalysts with different Mn contents (2, 4, and 6 wt%) were prepared as adsorbents and catalysts. The adsorption of toluene and the regeneration performance of ozone catalytic oxidation at room temperature were investigated. The results showed that the toluene conversion reaches 90 % at 30 celcius through 4 wt% Mn/ZSM-5 catalytic oxidation. The cycling and ozone utilization rate experiments re-flected that after four consecutive adsorption-ozonation cycles, 4 wt% Mn/ZSM-5 still maintained good toluene adsorption capacity. In the regeneration process, the molar ratio of ozone consumption to toluene degradation was about 7.7:1, which was approximate to the theoretical molar ratio (6:1). The product distribution on the surface of ZSM-5 and 4 wt%Mn/ZSM-5 during toluene degradation was determined by GC-MS analysis, and possible mechanism for catalytic oxidation of toluene on the surface of ZSM-5 and 4 wt%Mn/ZSM-5 were proposed.
Synergistic oxidation of toluene through bimetal/cordierite monolithic catalysts with ozone

Abstract:Toluene treatment has received extensive attention, and ozone synergistic catalytic oxidation was thought to be a potential method to degrade VOCs (violate organic compounds) due to its low reaction temperature and high catalytic efficiency. A series of bimetal/Cord monolithic catalysts were prepared by impregnation with cordierite, including MnxCu5-x/Cord, MnxCo5-x/Cord and CuxCo5-x/Cord (x = 1, 2, 3, 4). Analysis of textural properties, structures and morphology characteristics on the prepared catalysts were conducted to evaluate their performance on toluene conversion. Effects of active component ratio, ozone addition and space velocity on the catalytic oxidation of toluene were investigated. Results showed that MnxCo5-x/Cord was the best among the three bimetal catalysts, and toluene conversion and mineralization rates reached 100 and 96% under the condition of Mn2Co3/Cord with 3.0 g/m3 O3 at the space velocity of 12,000 h-1. Ozone addition in the catalytic oxidation of toluene by MnxCo5-x/Cord could efficiently avoid the 40% reduction of the specific surface area of catalysts, because it could lower the optimal temperature from 300 to 100 °C. (Co/Mn)(Co/Mn)2O4 diffraction peaks in XRD spectra indicated all the four MnxCo1-x/Cord catalysts had a spinel structure, and diffraction peak intensity of spinel reached the largest at the ratio of Mn:Co = 2:3. Toluene conversion rate increased with rising ozone concentration because intermediate products generated by toluene degradation might react with excess ozone to generate free radicals like ·OH, which would improve the toluene mineralization rate of Mn2Co3/Cord catalyst. This study would provide a theoretical support for its industrial application.

Boosting Ozone Catalytic Oxidation of Toluene at Room Temperature by Using Hydroxyl-Mediated MnOx/Al2O3 Catalysts.

Abstract:Ozone catalytic oxidation (OZCO) has gained great interest in environmental remediation while it still faces a big challenge during the deep degradation of refractory volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at room temperature. Hydroxylation of the catalytic surface provides a new strategy for regulating the catalytic activity to boost VOC degradation. Herein, OZCO of toluene at room temperature over hydroxyl-mediated MnOx/Al2O3 catalysts was originally demonstrated. Specifically, a novel hydroxyl-mediated MnOx/Al2O3 catalyst was developed via the in situ AlOOH reconstruction method and used for toluene OZCO. The toluene degradation performance of MnOx/Al2O3 was significantly superior to those of most of the state-of-the-art catalysts, and 100% toluene was removed with an excellent mineralization rate (82.3%) and catalytic stability during OZCO. ESR and in situ DRIFTs results demonstrated that surface hydroxyl groups (HGs) greatly improved the reactive oxygen species generation, thus dramatically accelerating the benzene ring breakage and deep mineralization. Furthermore, HGs provided anchoring sites for uniformly dispersing MnOx and greatly enhanced toluene adsorption and ozone activation. This work paves a way for deep decomposition of aromatic VOCs at room temperature.

Abstract:Recently, the problem of VOCs pollution has become serious in many regions, especially developing countries. Herein, the distribution of aluminum species in USY was controlled by dealumination of Y zeolite under different conditions, and then the dealuminated samples were used to prepare five different supported catalysts MnOx/ USY to achieve high-efficiency catalytic ozonation of toluene at low temperature. It was found that aluminum species were successfully leached from the zeolite framework to the extra-framework, which changed the properties of the manganese oxide nanoparticles loaded on the zeolite. Moreover, the oxygen vacancies and the acid sites in different catalysts showed great differences. As the extra-framework aluminum species increased, the amount of oxygen vacancies in the catalysts decreased, while the content of acid sites exhibited a "volcano-type" trend similar to toluene conversion. The best catalysts (Mn-Y-3) maintain > 90% toluene conversion at 30 degrees C but the worst catalysts (Mn-Y-5) deactivate rapidly. With the help of in situ DRIFTS, it is found that the activation ability of toluene on the acidic sites of the catalyst is the key to the toluene conversion when the amount of oxygen vacancies is sufficient to decompose ozone into active oxygen species, and the contribution of Lewis acid sites is greater than Bronsted acid sites. It provides some theoretical guidance in designing effective catalysts for ozone catalytic oxidation of VOCs.

Abstract:MnO2-decorated iron-manganese composite oxides were prepared via a novel method combining hydrolysis driving redox reaction and hydrothermal approach. The differences in physicochemical properties and microstructures were controlled by modulating the ratio of MnO2 to 5Mn1Fe (The molar ratio of Mn to Fe was 5:1). Characterization results displayed that the excellent efficiency of toluene removal over 3MnO2/5Mn1Fe catalyst was attributable to the special structure, strong low-temperature reducibility, high surface Mn3+/Mn4+ and Oads/Olatt molar ratios. The interaction between MnO2 and 5Mn1Fe played a predominant role in outstanding catalytic efficiency of the hetero-nanostructures. Among all as-prepared catalysts, the highest activity was achieved over the bayberry-like 3MnO2/5Mn1Fe catalyst with corresponding T90 of 233 °C, much lower than MnO2 for 313 °C and 5Mn1Fe for 280 °C. This successful strategy could not only be applied to VOCs catalytic oxidation but also provide a novel synthetic path for other catalysis systems.

Enhancing ozone catalytic decomposition through acid treatment of α-MnO2 for improved activity and humidity resistance

Abstract:Post-etching method using dilute acid solutions is an effective technology to modulate the surface compositions of metal-oxide catalysts. Here the α-MnO2 catalyst treated with 0.1 mol/L nitric acid exhibits higher ozone decomposition activity at high relative humidity than the counterpart treated with acetic acid. Besides the increases in surface area and lattice dislocation, the improved activity can be due to relatively higher Mn valence on the surface and newly-formed Brønsted acid sites adjacent to oxygen vacancies. The remnant nitro species deposited on the catalyst by nitric acid treatment is ideal hydrophobic groups at ambient conditions. The decomposition route is also proposed based on the DRIFTS and DFT calculations: ozone is facile to adsorb on the oxygen vacancy, and the protonic H of Brønsted acid sites bonds to the terminal oxygen of ozone to accelerate its cleavage to O2, reducing the reaction energy barrier of O2 desorption.

Abstract:Catalytic combustion of toluene has been widely investigated due to importance of abatement of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and in this work we have successfully prepared highly efficient heterogeneous catalysts for toluene combustion by impregnation of manganese oxides with Al-rich Beta zeolites (Beta-SDS) with H-form (MnOx/H-Beta-SDS) and K-form (MnOx/K-Beta-SDS) as well as pure siliceous Beta zeolite (MnOx/Si-Beta). Catalytic tests show that these zeolite-supported catalysts have higher activities than alumina-supported manganese oxides (MnOx/Al2O3). By comprehensive consideration of reducibility, adsorbed oxygen species, and lattice oxygen species in the catalysts, it is shown that the adsorbed oxygen species play more important roles than others for the catalytic activity. The good catalytic performance and understanding of active sites over the MnOx/H-Beta-SDS might be helpful for preparation of catalysts in VOCs abatement.

Abstract:The temperature of waste gas in refuse transfer station, airport smoking area, and RTO terminal is low, which needs deep oxidation. Catalytic ozonation is one of the most effective treatment techniques in these scenarios. In this study, we reported that catalysts were modified under the condition of magnetic field to simulate the low temperature dynamic conditions of low concentration toluene for catalytic ozonation. This paper aims to explore the relationship between oxygen vacancy and active oxygen species, and the specific pathways of toluene oxidation. The study found that citric acid can enhance the synergistic effect between Mn and Ce, and promote the generation of oxygen vacancies. The surface molecule adsorption oxygen is more conducive to catalytic oxidation than subsurface atom adsorption oxygen. Finally, we proposed the main pathways of toluene in this reaction system, which runs through the whole process of the reaction.

Abstract:The development of stable, highly active, and inexpensive catalysts for the ozone catalytic oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is challenging but of great significance. Herein, the micro-coordination environment of Al in commercial Y zeolite was regulated by a specific dealumination method and then the dealuminated Y zeolite was used as the support of Cu-Mn oxides. The optimized catalyst Cu-Mn/DY exhibited excellent performance with around 95% of toluene removal at 30 °C. Besides, the catalyst delivered satisfactory stability in both high-humidity conditions and long-term reactions, which is attributed to more active oxygen vacancies and acidic sites, especially the strong Lewis acid sites newly formed in the catalyst. The decrease in the electron cloud density around aluminum species enhanced electron transfer at the interface between Cu-Mn oxides. Moreover, extra-framework octahedrally coordinated Al in the support promoted the electronic metal-support interaction (EMSI). Compared with single Mn catalysts, the incorporation of the Cu component changed the degradation pathway of toluene. Benzoic acid, as the intermediate of toluene oxidation, can directly ring-open on Cu-doped catalysts rather than being further oxidized to other byproducts, which increased the rate of the catalytic reaction. This work provides a new insight and theoretical guidance into the rational design of efficient catalysts for the catalytic ozonation of VOCs.

Abstract:A series of Mn and Fe metal oxide catalysts loaded onto USY, as well as single metal oxides, were prepared and characterized. The effects of interactions between the catalytic components and the introduction of gas phase NO on the catalytic ozonation of toluene were investigated. Characterization showed that there existed strong interactions between MnOx, FeOx, and USY, which enhanced the content of oxygen vacancies and acid sites of the catalysts and thus boosted the generation of reactive oxygen species and the adsorption of toluene. The MnFeOx-USY catalyst with MnOx and FeOx dimetallic oxides exhibited the most excellent performance of catalytic ozonation of toluene. On the other hand, the presence of NOx in reaction gas mixtures significantly promoted both toluene conversion and mineralization, which was attributed to the formation of nitrate species on the catalysts surface and thus the increase of both acid sites and toluene oxidation sites. Meanwhile, the reaction mechanism between O3 and C7H8 was modified in which the strong interactions between MnOx, FeOx, and USY accelerated the reaction progress based on the L-H route. In addition, the formation of the surface nitrate species not only promoted reaction progress following the L-H route but also resulted in the occurrence of the reaction via the E-R route.

Abstract:A strategy simple, safe and suitable for large scale production of α-MnO2 catalyst with high activity in VOCs oxidation is crucial for its application. The catalytic reactivity of α-MnO2 catalyst is largely related with its oxygen vacancy. Herein, we report effective construction of oxygen vacancies on α-MnO2 through simply adjusting precipitation temperature of a redox precipitation process. The key role of surface oxygen vacancies in toluene oxidation and the formation of different amount and distribution of the oxygen vacancies over the α-MnO2 catalysts were revealed by characterizations together with DFT calculations. The best catalyst (α-MnO2-60) exhibited significantly improved catalytic activity of α-MnO2 catalyst in toluene oxidation (T90 = 203 ℃) and excellent water resistance. The richest surface oxygen vacancies of α-MnO2-60 contributed to its best catalytic activity, despite of its relatively lower specific surface area. This work may provide a new perspective for the rational design of high efficient VOCs catalysts.

Abstract:A series of homogenous Fe-Mn oxides with superior catalytic oxidation activity was developed via interfacial redox-precipitation method for eliminating VOCs from industrial waste gas. Among them, Fe1Mn5 oxide achieved the optimum catalytic performance for toluene oxidation with a T90 of 209 degrees C. In addition, the catalyst demonstrated superior stability for long-time operation and great water resistance. By combining an array of analytical techniques with DFT calculations, the results revealed that Fe doping and interfacial redox-precipitation method synergistically resulted in high concentration of oxygen vacancy defect over Fe1Mn5 oxide, which improved lattice oxygen mobility and oxygen species activity, thus enhancing its low temperature reducibility. Meanwhile, in situ DRIFTS analysis revealed that both the adsorbed oxygen species and lattice oxygen with improved mobility could interact with adsorbed toluene, thus facilitating rapid dehydrogenation of methyl and demethylation of toluene and promoting the breakage of C--C bond in the aromatic ring.
