Abstract:The instability control of deep mining roadway is currently dominated by ejection and grouting, as well as floor support, which contradicts the economic and excavation efficiency of production. Taking the failure site of Xin'an Coal Mine in China as an example, this paper systematically analyzes the failure characteristics of supporting components, crack propagation, and surrounding rock deformation in situ, and the impact of failure on the rights and interests of staff, enterprise benefits, and low-carbon environmental protection. Then, a three-way continuous anchorage theory and the derived control technology are proposed based on the exploration of the instability mechanism. Besides, the UDEC Trigon model is adopted to reproduce the instability process and demonstrate the effect of the proposed control technology. According to the subsequent industrial test, the plastic deformation developing from shallow to deep parts leads to the bending, subsiding, swelling, and deformation of rock mass within 5.5 m of the roof, and the surrounding rock failure mainly features the shear failure in the middle of the tail of the supporting components and anchorage relaxation. Meanwhile, it wrecks huge havoc on the rights and interests of staff, enterprise benefits, and emission. Following the smooth application of the new technology to roadway excavation, the roof subsidence and two side displacements are reduced by 91.18% and 58.5%, respectively, compared with the original scheme, the rock mass fractures within 1.71 ~ 3.92 m of the roof is effectively sealed, the evolution depth of bed separation is down by 78.6%, and the excavation efficiency rises by 50% while ensuring the supporting cost. In addition, the defects of the new technology in engineering application are also discussed. Accordingly, the R&D and application of this new technology provide a positive reference for the efficiency control of deep mining roadway.

Abstract:With the increasing depth of underground coal mining in China year by year, the problems of the floor heave of roadway become more and more serious. As one of the main forms of the deformation and failure of the surrounding rock in the soft rock roadway, floor heave is the most difficult problem to be solved in the deep mining of coal mines and other underground tunnel engineering. In order to control the floor heave effectively, Chinese scholars have systematically studied the treatment methods of floor heave under various conditions. In this paper, the direct reinforcement method, the indirect reinforcement method and the unloading method are analyzed emphatically, and the comprehensive treatment methods of the grouting bolt combined with reinforcing sidewalls and corners for the floor heave are put forward. After the engineering application of the methods of the grouting bolt combined with reinforcing sidewalls and corners in Baode coal mine, the floor heave of the roadway is controlled at 283 mm and the reinforcement cost of roadway floor is reduced by 40%, which has achieved remarkable technical and economic results. Finally, the prevention and control of floor heave technology is prospected.
Properties and Application of Backfill Materials in Coal Mines in China

Abstract:Coal is the basic resource underpinning energy generation in China, however, constant, large-scale mining of coal results in many problems such as ecological destruction of mining areas. As a result, backfilling of solid waste underground is proposed to control strata and surface subsidence and to protect the environment. At present, these materials, such as granular material, cemented material and high-water-content materials are mainly used for backfilling. This study summarised the types of backfill materials that are used in coal mines in China along with the backfilling process. Moreover, distribution and characteristics of mines backfilled with these backfill materials were obtained and analysed. Considering the socio-environmental aspects that affect backfilling, this research proposed a guideline for the selection of backfill materials and then analysed specific engineering cases of three backfill materials. In addition, the future development of backfill materials was discussed. With extensive extraction of shallow coal resources in China and, therefore, rapid depletion of coal resources in eastern regions of China, coal mining depth is increasing significantly. As a result, it is required to investigate new backfill materials suited for the deep high-stress environment.

Abstract:Traditional cemented paste backfilling continues to face the shortcomings such as paste leakage, poor adaptability to geological structures and insufficient roof-contact. To solve the limitations, a novel L-shaped cemented paste backfilling (LCPB) technology was proposed in this study. It is to set L-shaped filling zones and partition zones in the goaf to perform interval and multiple filling. A mechanical model was established to calculate backfilling body strength, widths of L-shaped filling zones and partition zones and backfilled ratio and etc. The results of a case study showed that: (1) The LCPB mining has a high backfilled ratio, without prominent ground pressure. The maximum values of roof-to-floor convergence of the working face and roadway were 58 mm and 259 mm, respectively. It could effectively control the deformation of surrounding rock and achieve roadway retention. (2) When the floor strata were intact, the maximum floor damage depth was less than 4 m, and the floor near the fault was 10–12 m. The secondary lift height of the confined water was about 5 m near the fault. The LCPB mining allows for safety mining above a confined aquifer. (3) The maximum surface inclination and curvature were 1.75 mm/m and 0.06 mm/m 2 , respectively. The draw angle was 11.3°, and the subsidence factor was 0.085. The ground surface deformation was reduced to be less than that allowed in the first level of the building damage (inclination and curvature of 3 mm/m and 0.2 mm/m 2 , respectively).

Abstract:Long-term and continuous large-scale exploitation has increasingly exhausted shallow metal mineral resources, and deep mining has become inevitable. The current global status of deep mining of metal mineral resources was presented, a series of engineering challenges faced by deep mining were systematically analyzed, and some progress and future innovation focus in key engineering technologies, such as the prediction and prevention of rockburst, cooling techniques, rock support techniques, deep hoisting techniques, and several nontraditional deep mining techniques, were highlighted. Meanwhile, new insights into development strategies of deep mining technology were proposed. The integration of these forward-looking key innovative technologies will form the overall framework of an innovative technology system for the deep mining of metal minerals. This technology system will help to achieve safe, efficient, and green exploitation of deep underground metal mineral resources and ensure the sustainable development of the metal mining industry.

Abstract:Coal occupies a dominant position in China's energy structure. However, overburden failure is the root cause of several safety and environmental issues. With the successive proposals of green mining and the dual-carbon strategy, the green development of coal-based energy has become the priority development direction. Overburden grout injection has become the preferred choice in the green mining technology system. The potential ecological health risk of heavy metal contamination in fly ash matrix soil was analyzed and evaluated in Xinyi coalmine. It is pointed out that only using fly ash as grouting material may cause irreversible harm to groundwater system. Based on the solid waste utilization and sustainable development, the close packing theory was adopted to determine that poorly graded gangue can be used as filling aggregate. Meanwhile, the passivation characteristics of loess to reduce the heavy metal in fly ash by increasing the water-stable aggregate content were elucidated. The properties and parameters of grouting materials composed of gangue, loess, and fly ash were analyzed, and a reasonable upper limit of slurry concentration was determined to be 72%. The field application indicates that the maximum surface subsidence is 473 mm, and the damage degree of buildings is within grade I, liberating 163 Mt of coal resources under the buildings. The harmless treatment of solid waste has been achieved, effectively reducing the negative external impact of coal mining. It is equivalent to saving 95.95 million yuan while promoting the green, safe, and sustainable development of coal enterprises.

Abstract:Due to the different in-situ stress level, mining stress state, and surrounding rock properties of steeply inclined deep coal mining, the mutation mechanism of underground engineering rock mass is complex. This paper studies the cause and control of mining disaster of steeply inclined deep coal resources in Wudong coal mine. The results show that the structural field is the key of multifield analysis, and particularly a large area of suspended roof is easy to expand energy and induce dynamic hazards. By means of borehole television- (BT-) transient electromagnetic (TEM) detection, it is found that there are hidden dangers of roof safety and suspected water hazards in Wudong coal mine, and the roof above the detection area (+575 m south roadway to 2250–2600 m) is in a suspended state; there is a suspected water-rich area in the range of 2320–2340 m and 2390–2400 m, and the lowest vertical height is +613.8–+615.5 m. Exploring and releasing the water in the aquifer effectively reduced the water pressure; in +575 m south roadway, +587 m measure roadway, and blasting chamber, the suspended roof blasting holes are constructed. Microseism- (MS-) TEM monitoring shows that the apparent resistivity fluctuates significantly, the microseismic energy and events have been significantly reduced, and it is maintained at a low level for two consecutive weeks, confirming the effectiveness of the stable release of the high-stress roof in the +575 m near stope area; at the same time, the safeguard measures for long-term roof dynamic monitoring are constructed.

Abstract:Pre-grouting as an effective means for improving the stability of roadways can reduce maintenance costs and maintain safety in complex mining conditions. In the Guobei coal mine in China, a cement pre-grouting technique was adopted to enhance the overall strength of soft coal mass and provide sufficient support for the roadway. However, there are very limited studies about the effect of grouting on the overall strength of coal in the laboratory. In this paper, based on the field observation of a coal-grout structure after grouting, a series of direct shear tests were conducted on coal and grouted coal specimens to quantitatively evaluate the quality improvement of grouted coal mass. The results showed that the peak and residual shear strength, cohesion, friction angle and the shear stiffness of grouted coal were significantly improved with the increase of the diameter of grout column. Linear regression models were established for predicting these mechanical parameters. In addition, three failure models associated with coal and grouted coal specimens were revealed. According to microstructure and macroscopic failure performance of specimens, the application of the proposed models and some methods for further improving the stability of grouted coal mass were suggested. The research can provide the basic evaluation and guideline for the parametric design of cement pre-grouting applications in soft coal mass.

Precise application of grouting technology in underground coal mining: water inrush risk of floor elimination

Abstract:Many coal mines in China suffer from the Ordovician limestone (OL) and Carboniferous limestone (CL) containing water inrush frequently due to the complex geology condition; water inrush has become a serious disaster in coal mining. To prevent water-bursting disaster from the floor of mine and cutting down deaths and economic loss, a grouting method for limestone fracture aquifer has been widely adopted. In this paper, a time-dependent empirical grouting model considering (1) time-dependent behavior of the injected slurry, (2) response of the rock, and (3) interaction between the slurry and rock was proposed to describe the slurry diffusion mechanism in rock fracture. Aiming at the problem of water disaster prevention of a coal seam floor in 16,104 working face of Luxi coal mine, that was, the grouting failed to seal the water flow channel of aquifer, the causes of the failure of grouting for water sealing were analyzed. According to the aquifer parameters and model calculation results, a grouting scheme with a slurry diffusion radius of 20 m and grouting pressure of 8 MPa was proposed; 2 rounds of grouting were implemented, following the split spacing principle, to ensure that finer fractures can be sufficiently sealed. Finally, with the comparative analysis through the network parallel electrical method (NPEM) and the drilling exploration method for water-rich areas before and after grouting, it was verified that the grouting effect for floor limestone aquifer was good, and the grouting scheme proposed and the grouting pressure designed were reasonable. Results may provide reference to a karst fractured aquifer grouting project, as well as reduced the losing because of blindness and experience.

Abstract:To solve the ground subsidence problem associated with thick coal seam mining under the railway in the Tangshan Mine, the technology of overburden strata separation-zone grouting (OSSG) was proposed. Based on the analysis of the full height overlying strata structure in the range of the six working face areas of the second mining district, the spatial distribution characteristics of the separation zone within the overlying strata are obtained after fully mining the six working faces. Then, emphasis was placed on the selection ratio of grouting materials and the hydrodynamic properties of different grout types, and grouting grout with a high concentration, slow precipitation rate, and good stability was obtained by taking fly ash and local clay as aggregates. The designed grout concentration was approximately 40%; the bulk density was approximately 1.20; and the clay content in the aggregates was approximately 40–50%. The separation-zone grouting plan was designed for the six working faces, and continuous grouting technology with the characteristics of multiple separation zones within the full-height section with a large flow and a high concentration was proposed to form a complete grouting system and reasonable grouting process. After engineering verification, the technology has an ash injection ratio of 24.2%, a grouting ratio of 100.3%, and a reduction in the ground subsidence ratio of 51.5%, effectively reducing mining damage to the ground surface and ensuring the safe operation of ground surface railways. Simultaneously, this advancement improves the resource recovery rate of coal mines and provides greater benefits for mining enterprises.

Abstract:In the process of coal mining, the original state of rock strata is seriously damaged and a large number of fractures are produced. If the fracture is connected to the overlying natural water body, leakage of surface water and ground water will cause serious mine water damage and lack of regional water resources. If the fracture is connected with gob water containing harmful gases and substances, in addition to the occurrence of mine water damage, it will pollute the water body. In the process of mining extra-thick coal seams, water inrush accidents caused by the development of large-space overburden fracture are more frequent, which causes more serious loss and pollution of water, and even desertification of land. In this paper, digital panoramic imaging technology is used to monitor the movement of overburden rock during the mining process. A reasonable time for fracture grouting sealing was proposed based on the similar simulation experiment and the evolution characteristics of fracture fractal dimension and a reasonable ground grouting sealing scheme was designed. The field monitoring results show the grouting effectively seals the fractures and reduce air leakage and solve the risk of gob water leakage above the working face. The research in this paper reveals the evolution characteristics of large-space overburden fractures in extra-thick coal seam mining with hard roofs. It shows that ground grouting sealing is an effective means to reduce the secondary disasters of fracture development, which has practical value and practical significance for environmental protection and coal safety development.

Abstract:Deep aquifers are a common geological disaster source in coal mines and they can lead to water and mud inrush disasters. Grouting is the most effective method to reinforce aquifers and block water. However, grouting only at the water inrush area cannot obtain a stable effect. A combination of groundwater runoff analysis and grouting keyholes optimization was adopted to solve the problem of water inrush in deep mines. First, the structural pattern of the grouting area was identified and the position of the water inrush channel was deduced, yielding the mine's groundwater runoff pattern. Then, the quality of grouting holes was evaluated by AHP analysis and the keyholes in the runoff network were determined according to the maximum membership degree principle. Finally, the keyholes were blocked by grouting. After the grouting treatment, the grouting effect was evaluated by using working face water inflow and water detection radar. The results indicate that combining groundwater runoff analysis with keyhole selection can effectively control water inrush in deep mining.

Paste Backfilling Longwall Mining Technology for Thick Coal Seam Extraction under Buildings and above Confined Aquifers: A Case Study

Abstract:Backfill mining is an effective measure to control surface subsidence and restrain floor water inrush. It is an essential part of green mining technology. To solve the problem of confined water in mines under buildings, this study was carried out by combining theoretical analysis, laboratory simulation, and numerical simulation, taking the Liangbei coal mine as the research area. The coal seam floor failure characteristics of traditional longwall caving and paste filling mining methods were compared and analyzed. Based on the relevant mining theory, the key parameters, such as mining thickness and filling rate under the critical state of water inrush, were obtained. Then, the feasibility of backfill mining was expounded, and the surface subsidence of paste backfill mining was predicted and measured on site. The results demonstrated that the longwall caving mining method not only had the risk of water inrush, but also the possibility of step cracks at the surface, with the potential to result in serious damage to buildings. However, the backfill mining method reduced the floor damage depth of the coal seam from 12 m to 7 m, which reduced the water inrush coefficient by 12%, the maximum vertical concentrated stress by 42.1%, and the displacement subsidence value by 78.8%. These parameters correlated negatively with backfill strength. Meanwhile, the maximum subsidence, maximum inclined deformation, and horizontal displacement deformation were estimated as 730 mm, 2.5 mm/m, and 1.1 mm/m, respectively, consistent with the measured values (608 mm, 2.1 mm/m, and 0.9 mm/m, respectively). More relevantly, there were no obvious cracks found in the surface buildings, ensuring the safety of mining above confined water on the working face, and realizing the effective protection of surface buildings.

New Technology of Pressure Relief Control in Soft Coal Roadways with Deep, Violent Mining and Large Deformation: A Key Study

Abstract:Previous studies have shown that the influence of deep dynamic pressure on the surrounding rock control of a coal roadway is one of the difficulties in mine roadway support. Based on the investigation of the headgate 11231 in a coal mine, this study analyzes the damage characteristics of coal roadway surrounding rock affected by deep dynamic pressure, expounds on the difficulties of controlling the roadway surrounding rock, and creatively proposes a cooperative control technology of external anchor–internal unloading for regulating large deformation of roadways. The vertical stress distribution and transfer law of surrounding rock with different hole-making depths, spacing, and lengths after roadway excavation were simulated and studied, and an appropriate parameter range of hole-making space in the stage without dynamic pressure influence was obtained. Considering the influence of mining dynamic pressure, the surrounding rock pressure relief effect of each optimized hole-making parameter was analyzed. In addition, the optimal hole-making parameters (the hole-making depth, spacing, and length were 8 m, 3.2 m, and 3 m, respectively) that can effectively reduce the high stress of roadway shallow surrounding rock in two stages (without and with dynamic pressure) and ensure integrity of the shallow surrounding rock were obtained. The actual field application shows that the new technology can reduce the higher rib deformation by approximately 850 mm and achieve a good surrounding rock control effect. The research and practice show that the pressure relief control for soft coal roadways with deep, violent mining and large deformation has achieved success, providing technical support for the maintenance of the same type of roadway.

Macro/meso failure behavior of surrounding rock in deep roadway and its control technology

Abstract:Engineering disasters occur frequently and violently with the increase in mining depth, which is mostly due to insufficient study on the failure mechanism of the deep rock mass. In this paper, theoretical and experimental researches on the failure behaviors and deformation control of deep surrounding rock in recent years were reviewed. Macro/meso failure mechanism of deep rock or coal–rock combined body under different loading conditions have been systematically investigated. Stress gradient failure theory of surrounding rock, uniform strength support in the deep roadway, and the analogous hyperbola movement model of overlying strata were preliminary established and a combined grouting control technology for surface and underground was proposed. Abovementioned achievements are expected to offer theoretical bases and technical supports for the exploitation of China's deep mineral resources in the future.

Abstract:The mining depth of most coal mines in North China has exceeded 1 km. The high seepage water pressure caused by high ground stress leads to the increasingly serious threat of water disaster in the mine. To explore the relationship and mechanism between water inrush from deep mining floor and grouting prevention, single-level grouting and multi-level cooperative grouting methods were carried out in Ordovician limestone confined aquifer of coal seam floor in Xingdong coal mine. Meanwhile, the temporal and spatial characteristics of rock fracture in the floor of deep mining face are revealed through the law of rock fracture microseismic. It is noteworthy that the occurrence time of water inrush and microseismic events have lag characteristics, that is, the occurrence time of microseismic events is earlier than that of water inrush. The multi-level cooperative grouting method can effectively control the non-uniform dissolution Ordovician limestone aquifer in-plane and vertical plane. Furthermore, single-level grouting and multi-level cooperative grouting methods are assumed to be unstable grouting and stable grouting. Besides, the flow pattern transformation characteristics of Ordovician limestone water in unstable to stable grouting are simulated by the finite element method. The results show that the energy inoculation level of fracture expansion around the aquifer decreases after stable grouting reinforcement. In other words, the multi-level cooperative grouting method can effectively strengthen and fill the water inrush channel and reduce the damage of high osmotic pressure to the aquiclude. It is of great significance to reduce the probability of water inrush in deep coal seam and ensure the mining safety of deep coal seam.

Abstract:Abstract For the difficulty in managing the roof of mining under the shallow buried coal seams by continuous miner, the technical principles and effects of roof management technologies such as coal pillar support, artificial forced roofing and mining with backfilling were systematically analyzed. This paper has studied the advantages and disadvantages of different roof management methods. The results show that the reasonable reservation of coal pillars can effectively manage the roof, but the mining face has a low recovery rate; effective manual forced roofing can reasonably control the roof cave and increase the mining face recovery rate; mining with backfilling can effectively prevent the large area of the roof from caving, significantly increase the recovery rate of the working face, and can reduce or even avoid surface subsidence.
Key Coal Mining Technology of Flexible Shield Support for Steep Thick Coal Seam

Abstract:In Changgouyu colliery,the use of the mining method of single flexible shield support has successfully solved the problem of smoothly transferring the support in the coal seam with a steep dip angle,which proves to have a very good adaptability.And the use of the flexible shield support technology that discharging coal in the side has solved the problem of full height mining at one time for thick coal seam,retrieving the coal resource effectively.The fact shows that the single leg type shield support and the technology of discharging coal in the side is an efficient method of coal mining under the condition of steep thick coal seam.It breaks the traditional mining framework as well as the roadway layout and builds a new coal mining system to mine the steep thick coal seam,making the mining activity be much more safe and the recovery of coal be greatly enhanced(reaching 93.8%).

Abstract:In this study, we systematically studied the occurrence regularity of in situ stress in the Pingdingshan mine. The critical criterion model of coal-rock destabilization was established based on the theoretical framework of fracture mechanics. Furthermore, we analyzed the coupling destabilization mechanism of in situ stress and gas and studied the influence of the variation between original rock stress and mining-induced stress on the critical criterion. Through field experiments and applications, we established a three-dimensional gas drainage technology system for areas with a large mining height and long work face. Based on our research, a demonstration project was developed for deep mine dynamic disaster control. The technical system included the arrangement and optimization of pre-drainage holes along the coal seam, technology, and optimization of gas drainage through the bottom drainage tunnel and upper corner, gas drainage technology through sieve tubes, and a two plugging with one injection under pressure sealing technology. The implementation of the demonstration project effectively reduced the gas content and pressure of the coal seam in the deep mine, and the project increased the critical strength of the instability and failure of coal and rock.

Abstract:Filling mining is a main technology of mining coal resources under buildings, and it has a good effect on preventing ground subsidence. Taking Wangtaipu coal mine of the Shanxi Jincheng Anthracite Coal Mining Group as the engineering background, in order to solve the problem of traditional closed brick wall at the end of working face, which consumes a lot of manpower and material resources, and low efficiency, a technology of rapid-molding in-closed retaining-wall was proposed. Through theoretical analysis and engineering analogy, the overall structure and size of the mold bag were designed. Through the experiment of high-water bleeding rate and slurry expansion, it was determined that the best water-cement ratio was 0.85 : 1, and the best additive content was 25 kg/m3. Taking economic factors into consideration, it was determined that liquid sodium silicate was used as the admixture. The XV2308 working face was selected for on-site testing and the on-site monitoring of the roof pressure, the roadway deformation, and the stress of the coal body. The results showed that there was no large area roof pressure on the working face, the coal body was under stable force, the stress concentration coefficient was small, the coal pillar had no plastic failure, and the roadway deformation was small. Through on-site monitoring of ground subsidence, the results showed that the amount of ground movement and deformation were small. The maximum value of subsidence was 12 mm, which could meet the requirements of safety production and had significant economic benefits.
