Abstract:Traditional inorganic thermoelectric materials exhibit excellent thermoelectric performance but poor flexibility. As a new type of flexible inorganic thermoelectric material, Ag2S owns a ductile nature and shows high flexibility and promising thermoelectric potential. Considering the rapid development of thermoelectrics, it is critical and timely to summarize the progress, challenges, and outlooks of Ag2S. Here, we comprehensively review the crystal structure, electronic structure, thermal transport mechanism, and mechanical properties of Ag2S. After that, we summarize the advanced strategies for improving the thermoelectric properties of Ag2S-based materials and their assembly for high-performance flexible thermoelectric devices. The fundamentals of monolayer Ag2S are also highlighted for potential thermoelectric applications. Finally, we point out the controversies and directions of Ag2S-based thermoelectrics for applications in both flexible power generation and refrigeration. This review will guide researchers to pursue new directions in the field of Ag2S.

Abstract:Thermoelectric technology has been an alternative for waste heat recovery due to its ability to realize direct conversion between heat energy and electricity. As a promising n-type thermoelectric material, layer-structured Bi2O2Se has been widely investigated in the past decades. Bi2O2Se has excellent merits including extremely high carrier mobility, large Seebeck coefficient, low lattice thermal conductivity, low cost, as well as good thermal and chemical stability. Up to now, reviews especially regarding Bi2O2Se-based thermoelectric material are rare. Hence, in this review, the pristine features of Bi2O2Se as a thermoelectric material were systematically summarized from crystal structure and microstructure, electronic band structure, as well as phonon spectra. Then, the recent advances in optimization strategies for Bi2O2Se were updated and discussed, which were categorized into effective doping, texturing by shear exfoliation, and compositing with other materials. In the end, the current challenges and possible perspectives were highlighted toward further developments of Bi2O2Se.

Abstract:Thermoelectric materials (TMs) can uniquely convert waste heat into electricity, which provides a potential solution for the global energy crisis that is increasingly severe. Bulk Cu2Se, with ionic conductivity of Cu ions, exhibits a significant enhancement of its thermoelectric figure of merit zT by a factor of ~3 near its structural transition around 400 K. Here, we show a systematic study of the electronic structure of Cu2Se and its temperature evolution using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Upon heating across the structural transition, the electronic states near the corner of the Brillouin zone gradually disappear, while the bands near the centre of Brillouin zone shift abruptly towards high binding energies and develop an energy gap. Interestingly, the observed band reconstruction well reproduces the temperature evolution of the Seebeck coefficient of Cu2Se, providing an electronic origin for the drastic enhancement of the thermoelectric performance near 400 K. The current results not only bridge among structural phase transition, electronic structures, and thermoelectric properties in a condensed matter system, but also provide valuable insights into the search and design of new generation of thermoelectric materials.

Abstract:By converting waste heat into electricity through the thermoelectric power of solids without producing greenhouse gas emissions, thermoelectric generators could be an important part of the solution to today's energy challenge. There has been a resurgence in the search for new materials for advanced thermoelectric energy conversion applications. In this paper, we will review recent efforts on improving thermoelectric efficiency. Particularly, several novel proof-of-principle approaches such as phonon disorder in phonon-glasselectron crystals, low dimensionality in nanostructured materials and charge-spin-orbital degeneracy in strongly correlated systems on thermoelectric performance will be discussed.

Abstract:This work discusses how the research focus of PbSe thermoelectrics has shifted from medium to near‐room temperatures and reviews advances in constructing high‐efficiency power generation and cooling devices based on PbSe. Finally, several aspects of outlooks are proposed to further improve the material performance and device efficiency of PbSe, thus promoting practical applications in the future. Thermoelectric materials enable efficient and clean conversion between heat and electricity, offering significant application prospects in waste heat recovery and solid‐state cooling. Lead selenide (PbSe) is a more abundant and cost‐effective alternative to PbTe with promising potential for mid‐temperature applications. However, things have changed very recently with the discovery of the traditional power generator PbSe being rather competitive as a thermoelectric cooler, opening new avenues for investigating this compound. This review aims to comb how the research achievements and promising performance of PbSe have shifted from medium to near‐room temperatures, by comprehensively discussing various strategies to enhance the thermoelectric efficiency at different temperature ranges. Subsequently, it is reviewed how these advances in materials have triggered deep investigations on constructing high‐efficiency power generation and cooling devices based on PbSe. Finally, a personal summary and outlook are presented on how to fully exploit the high‐ranged thermoelectric performance of PbSe materials and manufacture high‐efficiency power generators and coolers, thus promoting practical applications in the future.

Abstract:Thermoelectricity, green technology which can convert huge free thermal energy to electricity without time and geography limitations, is vital for bright future energy to alleviate global warming. In recent decades, numerous efforts have been made in the development of thermoelectric (TE) materials and their devices for various applications. Here, the latest progress of TE materials and devices is summarized. Multiple strategies for improving the performance of TE materials via regulating carriers and phonons are discussed. Besides the common heat source from industrial, natural, radioisotope, human and solar energy harvesting in various approaches, the attractive radiative cooling technology can provide a cold source for TE devices to generate electricity. Furthermore, TE devices are utilized to develop self-powered temperature/optical/chemical/biological sensors as well as temperature controllers and desalination. Especially, it is proposed that thermoelectric devices can be used to detect chemical endothermic reactions and the heat released by cell activity. In addition, it is expected that an uninterrupted power generation could be realized by integrating radiative cooling emitters and photothermal materials with thermoelectric devices. The future tendency is to further enhance material performance, optimize device design and develop adaptive circuit units while looking for exclusive broad application scenarios. There is plenty of room for thermoelectricity.

Abstract:In the last decade, high-performance Cu2Se thermoelectric materials and devices are attracting increasing research interest. In this review, we firstly summarize fundamentals of Cu2Se, including crystal structure, band structure, phase transition, and intrinsic thermoelectric performance. Then, we compare and overview the effectiveness of enhancing electrical transports and reducing lattice thermal conductivity on boosting figure of merit, zT of Cu2Se and found that zT enhancement of Cu2Se should be mainly attributed to reduced lattice thermal conductivity. After that, we highlight the chemical stability and mechanical properties of Cu2Se and its thermoelectric modules. In the end, we point out future research directions in the field of Cu2Se thermoelectrics. This review fills the gap of overview on the progress and challenge of Cu2Se thermoelectrics, and provide a new perspective to achieve Cu2Se-based thermoelectric materials with high thermoelectric performance.

Abstract:Thermoelectric generators, capable of directly converting heat into electricity, hold great promise for tackling the ever-increasing energy sustainability issue. The thermoelectric energy conversion efficiency is heavily dependent upon the materials’ performance that is quantified by the dimensionless figure-of-merit (ZT). Therefore, the central issue in the research of thermoelectric materials lies in continuously boosting the ZT value. Although thermoelectric effects were discovered in the nineteenth century, it was only until the 1950s when classic materials like Bi2Te3 and PbTe were developed and basic science of thermoelectrics was established. However, the research of thermoelectrics did not take a smooth path but a rather tortuous one with ups and downs. After hiatus in the 1970s and 1980s, relentless efforts starting from the 1990s were devoted to understanding the transport and coupling of electrons and phonons, identifying strategies for improving the thermoelectric performance of existing materials, and discovering new promising compounds. Rewardingly, substantial improvements in materials’ performance have been achieved that broke the ZT limit of unity. Meanwhile, advancements in fundamental understanding related to thermoelectrics have also been made. In this Review, recent advances in the research of thermoelectric materials are overviewed. Herein, strategies for improving and decoupling the individual thermoelectric parameters are first reviewed, together with a discussion on open questions and distinctly different opinions. Recent advancements on a number of good thermoelectric materials are highlighted and several newly discovered promising compounds are discussed. Existing challenges in the research of thermoelectric materials are outlined and an outlook for the future thermoelectrics research is presented. The paper concludes with a discussion of topics in other fields but related to thermoelectricity.

Abstract:High-performance liquid-like thermoelectrics have attracted global renewed attention since the paradigm of ‘phonon-liquid electron-crystal’ was proposed in 2012. As one of the most typical liquid-like thermoelectric materials, Cu2Se-based compounds have been widely studied and their thermoelectric figure of merits have continuously increased up to >2.0. Herein, a comprehensive overview is presented on the recent progress and future challenges for Cu2Se-based thermoelectric materials. First, the basic properties of Cu2Se, such as the complex crystal structures, unique liquid-like behavior, and anomalous critical phenomenon during phase transition are presented. Next, some common synthesis recipes are concisely outlined and the impact on the thermoelectric properties is intercompared. The effective strategies for improving the thermoelectric performance are then summarized, with some typical studies highlighted. Furthermore, the utmost concerned stability issues, in particular Cu ion migration, are discussed followed by the latest progress on Cu2Se-based thermoelectric devices. Finally, the challenges and outlook toward further development of Cu2Se-based materials, devices, and applications are provided.

Abstract:Thermoelectric technology provides a promising solution to sustainable energy utilization and scalable power supply. Recently, Ag2Q‐based (Q = S, Se, Te) silver chalcogenides have come forth as potential thermoelectric materials that are endowed with complex crystal structures, high carrier mobility coupled with low lattice thermal conductivity, and even exceptional plasticity. This review presents the latest advances in this material family, from binary compounds to ternary and quaternary alloys, covering the understanding of multi‐scale structures and peculiar properties, the optimization of thermoelectric performance, and the rational design of new materials. The "composition‐phase structure‐thermoelectric/mechanical properties" correlation is emphasized. Flexible and hetero‐shaped thermoelectric prototypes based on Ag2Q materials are also demonstrated. Abstract:By effectively converting waste heat into electricity, thermoelectric materials and devices can provide an alternative approach to tackle the energy crisis. Amongst thermoelectric materials, bismuth telluride (Bi2Te3) and its derivatives exhibit high figure of merit ZT values in the near-room-temperature region and show great potential for application in thermoelectric devices. Considering the rapid development of Bi2Te3-based thermoelectric materials and their devices in the last few years, a short and systematic review is much needed. Here, we summarize the novel designs, properties, and applications of Bi2Te3-based thermoelectric devices in different contexts, including wearable, portable, implantable, and cross-disciplinary applications. The challenges and outlook for Bi2Te3-based thermoelectric devices are also considered. This work will guide the future development of Bi2Te3-based thermoelectric devices that target broader and more practical applications.

Abstract:The direct, solid state, and reversible conversion between heat and electricity using thermoelectric devices finds numerous potential uses, especially around room temperature. However, the relatively high material processing cost limits their real applications. Silver selenide (Ag2Se) is one of the very few n-type thermoelectric (TE) materials for room-temperature applications. Herein, we report a room temperature, fast, and aqueous-phase synthesis approach to produce Ag2Se, which can be extended to other metal chalcogenides. These materials reach TE figures of merit (zT) of up to 0.76 at 380 K. To improve these values, bismuth sulfide (Bi2S3) particles also prepared in an aqueous solution are incorporated into the Ag2Se matrix. In this way, a series of Ag2Se/Bi2S3 composites with Bi2S3 wt % of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 are prepared by solution blending and hot-press sintering. The presence of Bi2S3 significantly improves the Seebeck coefficient and power factor while at the same time decreasing the thermal conductivity with no apparent drop in electrical conductivity. Thus, a maximum zT value of 0.96 is achieved in the composites with 1.0 wt % Bi2S3 at 370 K. Furthermore, a high average zT value (zT ave) of 0.93 in the 300–390 K range is demonstrated.

Abstract:Waste heat, an abundant energy source generated by both industries and nature, has the potential to be harnessed into electricity via thermoelectric power generation. The performance of thermoelectric modules, typically composed of cuboid-shaped materials, depends on both the materials' intrinsic properties and the temperature difference created. Despite significant advancements in the development of efficient materials, macroscopic thermal designs capable of accommodating larger temperature differences have been largely underexplored because of the challenges associated with processing bulk thermoelectric materials. Here we present the design strategy for Cu 2 Se thermoelectric materials for high-temperature power generation using a combination of finite element modelling and 3D printing. The macroscopic geometries and microscopic defects in Cu 2 Se materials are precisely engineered by optimizing the 3D printing and post-treatment processes, leading to notable enhancements in the material efficiency and temperature difference across legs, where the hourglass geometry exhibits maximized output powers and efficiencies. The proposed approach paves the way for designing efficient thermoelectric power generators.

Abstract:Exploring new near-room-temperature thermoelectric materials is significant for replacing current high-cost Bi2Te3. This study highlights the potential of Ag2Se for wearable thermoelectric electronics, addressing the trade-off between performance and flexibility. A record-high ZT of 1.27 at 363 K is achieved in Ag2Se-based thin films with 3.2 at.% Te doping on Se sites, realized by a new concept of doping-induced orientation engineering. We reveal that Te-doping enhances film uniformity and (00l)-orientation and in turn carrier mobility by reducing the (00l) formation energy, confirmed by solid computational and experimental evidence. The doping simultaneously widens the bandgap, resulting in improved Seebeck coefficients and high power factors, and introduces TeSe point defects to effectively reduce the lattice thermal conductivity. A protective organic-polymer-based composite layer enhances film flexibility, and a rationally designed flexible thermoelectric device achieves an output power density of 1.5 mW cm-2 for wearable power generation under a 20 K temperature difference.

Abstract:Ag2Se is a narrow band gap n-type semiconductor with high carrier mobility and low lattice thermal conductivity. It has high thermoelectric performance near room temperature. However, there is a noticeable data discrepancy for thermoelectric performance in the reported literature studies, which greatly hinders the rational understanding and potential application of this material. In this work, we comprehensively studied the homogeneity, reproducibility, and thermal stability of bulk Ag2Se prepared by melting and mechanical alloying methods followed by spark plasma sintering. By virtue of the atom probe topology technique, we revealed nanosized Ag- or Se-rich precipitates and micropores with Se-aggregated interfaces that have not been detected previously. The samples prepared by melting and spark plasma sintering exhibit the best homogeneity and repeatability in thermoelectric properties despite abundant nanoprecipitates. Moreover, the thermoelectric performance of Ag2Se is greatly improved by introducing a slight amount of excess selenium. The average zT can steadily reach 0.8-0.9 in the range of 300-380 K, which is among the highest values reported for Ag2Se-based materials. This work will rationalize the evaluation of the thermoelectric performance of Ag2Se.

Abstract:Thermoelectric materials have gained wide attention to realize multilevel efficient energy management to alleviate the increasingly severe energy crisis. Oxide ceramics were well-explored as potential thermoelectric candidates because of their outstanding merits, including abundance, eco-friendliness, high-temperature stability, and chemical stability. In this work, we aim to provide a comprehensive summary of the diversified state-of-the-art oxide ceramics and establish the links between composition designing, preparation process, structural characteristics, and properties to summarize the underlying chemistry and physics mechanism of band engineering, doping, composited with the second phase, defects engineering, and entropy engineering. Furthermore, advanced device design and applications such as thermoelectric modules, miniature generators, sensors, and coolers were reviewed. Ultimately, the challenges and future perspective of oxides ceramics for the device design and thermoelectric applications in the development of energy harvesting technology have been prospected.
