Abstract:In this work, silica-alumina mixed oxides with different SiO2 contents (5% and 30%) were adopted as acidic supports for platinum catalysts for soot oxidation. The obtained catalysts were thermally aged in air at 550, 650 and 750 degrees C for 2 h, respectively. The catalysts were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), CO chemisorption, inductively coupled plasma (ICP), N2 adsorption/desorption, NH3 temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), H2 temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), infrared (IR) spectroscopy of CO and NH3 adsorption, and NO temperature-programmed oxidation (TPO). The acidic support Pt catalysts had higher catalytic activities for NO oxidation and soot oxidation. After aging at 750 celcius, severer sintering of Pt occurred on the acidic supports, and some Pt particles larger than 50 nm formed, resulting in serious deactivation. It was ascribed to metallic state of Pt on the acidic supports with weakened metal-support interactions (SMI). Thus, CeO2 was added to the silica-alumina support by ball milling to strengthen the SMI via forming Pt-O-Ce bonds. In this way, Pt nanoparticles were anchored to the modified support to inhibit sintering at high temperatures, and the obtained Pt/CeO2/SiO2-Al2O3 catalyst exhibited both high soot oxidation activity and superior thermal stability.

Abstract:Silica was deposited onto activated carbon through TEOS hydrolysis and this composite was used as a support for the Au catalyst in acetylene hydrochlorination. Silica content and the catalyst synthesis process were both optimized. It was found that 1Au/5SiO(2)/AC showed improved stability, while being as active as 1Au/AC. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) quantitatively revealed the synchronism of TEOS hydrolysis and Au deposition, which was believed to be the linchpin in 1Au/5SiO(2)/AC synthesis. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) demonstrated that amorphous silica dispersed on the carbon surface uniformly as spherical particles. Silica deposition brought down the surface area of the catalyst while leading to better distribution of gold nanoparticles. Higher gold distribution degree guaranteed the catalytic activity of 1Au/5SiO(2)/AC despite surface area loss. A higher level of resistance to acetylene, excellent surface property stability and less carbonaceous deposition were determined as the origin of the improved stability of 1Au/5SiO(2)/AC.
Effect of support texture properties on Ni-Fe/γ-Al_2O_3 catalyst structure and catalytic performance for CO methanation

Abstract:Ni-Fe/γ-Al2 O3 catalysts with four different γ-Al2 O3 supports were prepared by incipient impregnation and characterized by XRD,BET and H2-TPR.Catalytic behaviors of the catalysts for low-temperature CO methanation were investigated in a slurry reactor.The results showed that the surface texture properties of γ-Al2 O3 supports had great impact on distribution of Ni reactive species and methanation activity.Moderate specific surface area(192m2/g) and pore size(5.8 nm) of γ-Al2 O3 was favor for the dispersion of active component,resulting in a higher amount of β-NiO and smaller Ni crystal particle size,which increased active sites,thus having better methanation activity and stability,with a CO conversion of 97.0% and a CH4 selectivity of 89.0%.However,the catalyst prepared by high silica γ-Al2 O3 support with larger specific surface area contained a great amount of α-NiO,which was inclined to agglomerate in the reduction process,resulting in low catalytic activity and stability,with a CO initial conversion of 85.5% and rapid deactivation after 17 hours.
A Hydrothermally Stable Single-Atom Catalyst of Pt Supported on High-Entropy Oxide/Al 2 O 3 : Structural Optimization and Enhanced Catalytic Activity

Abstract:A catalyst with high-entropy oxide (HEO)-stabilized single-atom Pt can afford low-temperature activity for catalytic oxidation and remarkable durability even under harsh conditions. However, HEO is easy to harden during sintering, which results in a few defective sites for anchoring single-atom metals. Herein, we present a sol–gel-assisted mechanical milling strategy to achieve a single-atom catalyst of Pt-HEO/Al2O3. The strong interaction between HEO and Al2O3 effectively inhibits the growth of HEO microparticles, which leads to generation of more surface defects because of the nanoscale effect. Meanwhile, another strong interaction between Pt and HEO stabilizes single-atom Pt on HEO. Temperature-programmed techniques further verify that the reactivity of surface lattice oxygen species is enhanced because of the Pt–O–M bonds on the surface of HEO. Unlike conventional single-atom Pt catalysts, Pt-HEO/Al2O3 as a heterogeneous catalyst not only exhibits superior stability against hydrothermal aging but also presents long-term reaction stability for CO catalytic oxidation, which exceeds 540 h. Abstract:Interfacial local environment of noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) and support is crucial for the development and design of thermally and chemically stable noble metal heterogeneous catalysts. The unique chemical environment can strengthen the NPs interaction with the support surface, which can effectively avoid the agglomeration of NPs. The strategy is developed to modulate the interfacial chemical environment of supported Pt NPs with the help of the unsaturated Al3+ in Al2O3N (nanobelt) support, resulting in a sintering-resistant Pt/Al2O3N catalyst. Al solid-state MAS NMR characterization shows that Al2O3N support contains a large amount of unsaturated Alpenta3+ (about 22.6%). XAS confirms that Pt NPs deposited on the surface of Al2O3 with rich unsaturated pentahedral coordinated Al3+ sites have a unique coordination structure at the interface (more Pt-O coordination). When catalyzing the CO oxidation as a probe reaction, the catalytic activity and the particle sizes of Pt NPs do not change significantly even after the reaction at 400 °C for 15 days, and the complete CO conversion temperature increases only by 40 °C when the catalyst is screened at 600 °C for 5 days. This work demonstrates a new strategy to develop stable large-scale anti-sintering noble metal-based heterogeneous catalysts for many important high-temperature industrial applications.

Abstract:CeO2–K catalysts supported on porous alumina substrate have been prepared by using a novel water-immiscible solvent. The advantage of this method is to load the catalyst onto the filter surface by one-time coating and prevent depositing the catalyst into the porous structure of support materials. The catalytic activities of the supported catalysts were evaluated by TPR system and the results showed that the pure CeO2 displayed a poor catalytic activity for soot oxidation, while the addition of K element into CeO2 would result in the formation of CeO2–K solid solution and significant enhancement of catalytic activity. Nevertheless, the variation of K content had a limited effect on soot ignition temperature. The catalyst with a Ce:K molar ratio of 1:2 exhibited an ignition temperature of about 330°C and the oxidation rates of about 0.16 and 0.28mgmin−1cm−2 at temperatures of 370 and 390°C, respectively.

Abstract:The sulfated Pt/Al2O3 catalyst was synthesized by impregnating H2SO4 on the Pt/Al2O3 catalyst. It exhibits higher catalytic activity than Pt/Al2O3 for soot oxidation under loose contact conditions in a feed flow containing NO and O-2. Further studies ascribe its good activity to a synergistic effect between sulfate species and platinum. Firstly, the electronegative sulfate species may improve the oxidation-resistance of metallic platinum in the oxidizing atmosphere, which is important for achieving high NO <-> NO2 <-> soot recycling efficiency; Secondly, the sulfate species inhibit the NOx adsorption on the alumina support, leading to a preferential adsorption of NOx on the surface of soot rather than on the catalyst, and thus provide more chances for NO2-soot reaction to generate the surface oxygenated complexes (SOCs); Finally, the sulfate species can promote the further decomposition of these SOCs species, resulting in a high catalytic efficiency for soot oxidation. Abstract:Conventional supported Pt catalysts have often been prepared by loading Pt onto commercial supports, such as SiO2, TiO2, Al2O3, and carbon. These catalysts usually have simple metal-support (i.e., Pt-SiO2) interfaces. To tune the catalytic performance of supported Pt catalysts, it is desirable to modify the metal-support interfaces by incorporating an oxide additive into the catalyst formula. Here we prepared three series of metal oxide-modified Pt catalysts (i.e., Pt/MOx/SiO2, Pt/MOx/TiO2, and Pt/MOx/Al2O3, where M = Al, Fe, Co, Cu, Zn, Ba, La) for CO oxidation. Among them, Pt/CoOx/SiO2, Pt/CoOx/TiO2, and Pt/CoOx/Al2O3 showed the highest catalytic activities. Relevant samples were characterized by N2 adsorption-desorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), H2 temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), CO temperature-programmed desorption (CO-TPD), O2 temperature-programmed desorption (O2-TPD), and CO2 temperature-programmed desorption (CO2-TPD).

Abstract:Platinum nanoparticles were synthesized by a classic polyol process in ethylene glycol. The Pt nanoparticles were loaded on H-ZSM5 and γ-Al2O3 supports by wet impregnation. The as-obtained solid was thermally treated in a two-step procedure to remove the organic residues. Due to their larger particle size than the micropore size of H-ZSM5, the impregnated Pt particles were dispersed on the external surface of the zeolite support. With similar Pt particle size distribution and Pt loading, the Pt/H-ZSM5 and Pt/γ-Al2O3 catalysts were evaluated for the oxidation of NO and soot. Despite its lower activity for NO oxidation to NO2, the Pt/H-ZSM5 exhibited a much higher activity for soot oxidation in the presence of NO + O2. This abnormal NOx-assisted soot oxidation behaviour of Pt/H-ZSM5 was explained by the promoting effect of the acid sites on the zeolite.

Abstract:Cu-based catalysts exhibit excellent performance in hydrogenation reactions. However, the poor stability of Cu catalysts under high temperatures has restricted their practical applications. The preparation of stable Cu catalysts supported by SiO2 with strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) has thus aroused great interest due to the high abundance, low toxicity, feasible processability, and low cost of SiO2. The challenge in the construction of such SMSI remains to be the inertness of SiO2. Herein, a simple and scalable method is developed to prepare 2D silica (2DSiO(2)) supported Cu catalysts with SMSI by carefully manipulating the topological exfoliation of CaSi2 with CuCl2 and thereafter calcination. The prepared Cu-2DSiO(2) catalysts with the unique encapsulated Cu nanoparticles exhibit excellent activity and long-term stability in high-temperature CO2 hydrogenation reactions. This feasible and low-cost solution for stabilizing Cu catalysts might shed light on their realistic applications.

Abstract:MnOx–CeO2 mixed oxides were introduced into Pt/Al2O3 catalyst to reduce the amount of platinum and improve the catalytic activity for soot oxidation in presence of NOx. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), CO chemisorption, thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), H2 temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), NO temperature-programmed oxidation (NO-TPO) and soot temperature-programmed oxidation (soot-TPO). Due to the superior redox property, the introduction of MnOx–CeO2 mixed oxides effectively enhanced the catalytic activities of Pt/Al2O3 catalyst for NO oxidation and hereby for soot oxidation in NO+O2. The Pt/MnOx–CeO2/Al2O3 catalyst also exhibited high activities after the thermal ageing and sulfur poisoning, which are related to the intrinsic characteristics of MnOx–CeO2/Al2O3 and Pt as well as their synergistic effects. The deactivation mechanisms of different catalysts (Pt/Al2O3,MnOx–CeO2/Al2O3 and Pt/MnOx–CeO2/Al2O3) were discussed.
Mesoporous SiO2-Supported Pt Nanoparticles for Catalytic Application

Abstract:SiO2 nanoparticles have been synthesized by combining Stober’s method and nonsurfactant process. The diameters and pore sizes can be controlled by altering the template and its concentration. Mesoporous SiO2 obtained this way has extremely large surface area compared with most oxide supports, which benefits the catalytic performance. Pt nanoparticles were in situ grown on and in mesoporous SiO2 nanoparticles with low amount of the metal and high load ratio. Furthermore, we firstly developed a novel route, called “one-pot” method, to prepare Pt/SiO2 catalyst where mesoporous silica preparing and Pt loading occurred in one step. This method is more efficient in saving reagent, since it can prevent Pt loss. In the meantime, it enables the template to reduce agent. The catalytic activity of Pt/SiO2 samples was measured by CO oxidation. It is indicated that the supporting silica with mesopores is more active than silica with micropores.

Abstract:Different catalyst supports, namely: commercial Degussa P25 TiO2, anatase TiO2 (CC), γ-Al2O3, and lab-synthesized AlOOH were used to prepare Pt-based catalysts for the room temperature formaldehyde oxidation. XRD, BET and XPS were conducted to characterize the bulk structure of support, the oxidation state of surface elements and the ratio of oxygen in hydroxyls to the total surface oxygen, as well as textural properties of catalysts. For the first time, a long-term activity test at 0% relative humidity was conducted to investigate relationships between the activity of the Pt-based catalysts with Pt dispersion and oxidation state and the relative abundance of surface OH groups. Pt/AlOOH showed the best activity, whereas Pt/P25 TiO2 gave the worst activity. We consider that both the surface hydroxyl groups and the Pt dispersion are indispensable, and both act synergistically. The specific surface area is not the decisive factor for the present reaction.

However, the transformation of γ-Al2O3 into the undesired hydrated boehmite (γ-AlOOH) under the aqueous reaction conditions usually results in an irreversible inactivation of supported Al2O3 catalysts. Toward suppressing the hydration of γ-Al2O3 in the process of catalytic reactions, herein we have devised a new strategy by exploring the SiH4 treatment for successful preparation of Si–Pd/Al2O3 catalysts. SiH4 treatment enables a significant improvement in the poor stability of Pd/Al2O3 for selective oxidation of toluene because SiH4 could effectively anchor palladium nanoparticles and inhibit the formation of boehmite by reacting with unsaturated aluminum sites to reduce the intensity of Lewis acid sites on the surface of γ-Al2O3. Pd/Al2O3 pretreated with SiH4, that is Si–Pd/Al2O3, provides high catalytic activity and stability in the aqueous oxidation of toluene even at high temperature. Moreover, Si–Pd/Al2O3 is reusable without obvious loss of the catalytic activity and selectivity, compared to Pd/Al2O3.

Abstract:MnOx–CeO2–Al2O3 mixed oxides were prepared by impregnating manganese acetate and cerium nitrate on alumina powders using the sol–gel method. The thermal stabilities of MnOx–CeO2 and Al2O3-modified mixed oxides were evaluated by treating at 800°C in dry air flow for 20h. The introduction of Al2O3 markedly increases the textural stability of the catalyst with a relatively high dispersion of MnOx and CeO2, remaining a strong synergistic effect between these two oxides. The NO oxidation activity of the ternary oxides experiences a smaller loss after high-temperature calcination, and a low soot oxidation temperature is attained in the presence of NO.

Abstract:PtCu single-atom alloy (SAA) opens an extensive prospect for heterogeneous catalytic processes. However, as the host of SAA, Cu suffers from severe sintering at elevated temperature, resulting in poor stability of catalysts. This paper describes the suppressing of the agglomeration of Cu nanoparticles under high temperature conditions using copper phyllosilicate (CuSiO 3 ) as support of PtCu SAAs. Based on quasi in situ XPS, in situ CO-DRIFTS, in situ Raman and in situ XRD, we demonstrated that the interfacial Cu + -O-Si formed upon reduction at 680 °C serves as the adhesive between Cu nanoparticles and silicon dioxide matrix, strengthening the metal-support interaction. Consequently, the resistance to sintering of PtCu SAAs was improved, leading to high catalytic stability during propane dehydrogenation without sacrificing conversion and selectivity. The optimized PtCu SAA catalyst achieved more than 42% propane conversion and 93% propylene selectivity at 580 °C for at least 30 hours. It paves an avenue for the design and development of highly active supported single-atom alloy catalysts with excellent thermal stability.
High-loading and thermally stable Pt 1 /MgAl 1.2 Fe 0.8 O 4 single-atom catalysts for high-temperature applications

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted extensive attention in the field of heterogeneous catalysis. However, the fabrication of SACs with high loading and high-temperature stability remains a grand challenge, especially on oxide supports. In this work, we have demonstrated that through strong covalent metal-support interaction, high-loading and thermally stable single-atom Pt catalysts can be readily prepared by using Fe modified spinel as support. Better catalytic performance in N 2 O decomposition reaction is obtained on such SACs than their nanocatalyst counterpart and low-surface-area Fe 2 O 3 supported Pt SACs. Hierarchical Porous K-OMS-2/3DOM-m Ti 0.7 Si 0.3 O 2 Catalysts for Soot Combustion: Easy Preparation, High Catalytic Activity, and Good Resistance to H 2 O and SO 2

Abstract:Soot particles are recognized as one of the main sources of air pollution; therefore, it is an urgent need to eliminate them from the air effectively. Catalytic combustion is a promising strategy for soot abatement, yet the development of highly efficient catalysts is still an important challenge for practical applications. In this study, novel hierarchical porous K-OMS-2/3DOM-m Ti0.7Si0.3O2 catalysts, in which the Ti0.7Si0.3O2 supports contain ordered macropores and mesopores and the K-OMS-2 active phase contains micropores, were purposefully designed and successfully prepared using a simple method. The macropores and mesopores in the as-prepared catalysts were formed by PMMA and P123 as templates, and the micropores were brought about by K-OMS-2, a specific crystal form of cryptomelane. The K-OMS-2/3DOM-m Ti0.7Si0.3O2 catalysts exhibit high catalytic activity for soot combustion, along with high stability and good resistance to sulfur and water. Among the synthesized catalysts, K-OMS-2/3DOM-m Ti0.7Si0.3O2-450 shows the highest catalytic activity with T10, T50, and T90 values of 288, 333, and 364 °C, respectively. This catalyst also exhibits good stability after five catalytic cycles with T10, T50, and T90 values in the range of 290 ± 4, 335 ± 4, and 368 ± 4 °C, respectively. The excellent catalytic performance in soot combustion associated with high NO oxidation activity is attributed to the hierarchical pore effect, a synergistic effect between K and Mn, as well as to doping with Ti. Molecular density functional theory (DFT) and thermodynamic modeling indicated that both Langmuir–Hinshelwood and Eley–Rideal mechanisms may operate in the NO to NO2 oxidation on the K-OSM-2 surface, yet the former is energetically slightly more preferred. Abstract:Pt-CeO2 catalysts have been widely studied for the vehicle emission control. Designing novel CeO2 based supports with improved physical-chemical properties has become a research hotspot to further promote the catalytic performance and stability of Pt-CeO2 catalysts. In this work, through utilizing a unique, two-step incipient wetness impregnation (T-IWI) method for ceria-zirconia-alumina (CZA-T) support preparation, a Pt single site catalyst (Pt/CZA-T) with excellent thermal stability was synthesized. Higher oxidation activity and Oxygen storage capacity (OSC) were achieved on activated Pt/CZA-T, comparing to Pt catalysts on regular CeO2/Al2O3 (Pt/CA) and one-step prepared CeZrO x /Al2O3 (Pt/CZA). Via the modification of hydrophilic/hydrophobic properties of γ-Al2O3 by this unique T-IWI method, finer Ce0.9Zr0.1O2 particles with higher density of surface defects were formed on CZA-T, on which a higher Pt dispersion and stronger Pt-O-Ce interaction were achieved. Upon activation, smaller, well-dispersed Pt clusters on CZA-T were generated. It was concluded that the CO oxidation performance and OSC were highly related to the size of Pt clusters on different supports that we have developed. More Pt sites located at Pt cluster-CeZrO x interfaces, which were the real active sites, were responsible for the highest OSC function and CO oxidation activity of activated Pt/CZA-T catalyst.
