Abstract:The product of methylaluminoxane（MAO） is available commercially, however, central challenges over poor process control, low product yield, and high safety risks, still remain in its synthesis using large-scale reactors.This review presents several conventional hydrolytic routes for MAO synthesis with different techniques to supply water in the reaction system, and primarily focuses upon the development of continuous flow platforms to synthesize MAO, isobutylaluminoxane（IBAO）, and modified methylaluminoxane（MMAO） using 3D printed functional devices.In particular, those flow platforms introduce monodisperse microdroplets of water to improve the heat and mass transfer, achieving inherently safe productions of alkylaluminoxanes with high yield and superior co-catalytic activity. The presented flow strategy has a wide array of applications in chemical synthesis, especially when handling fast, highly exothermic, multiphase reactions.

Abstract:We present a 3D-printed continuous flow platform for controllable synthesis of isobutylaluminoxanes (IBAO), an effective olefin polymerization co-catalyst, via highly exothermic hydrolytic reaction of triisobutylaluminum (TIBA). This platform encompasses modules of mixing and reaction, in-line separation, and in situ UV-vis characterization. In addition, two NMR protocols are established to validate the results of in-line UV-vis analysis (31P NMR) and reveal product structures (1H NMR). Measured temperature profiles over the reactor indicate essentially fast heat removal, ensuring inherent safety. Subsequently, co-catalytic activity of IBAO is obtained by ethylene oligomerization experiments using an iron-based catalyst system at atmospheric pressure. Furthermore, we investigate the influence of key operating parameters including initial molar ratio between water and TIBA, initial TIBA concentration, and residence time. High IBAO yield over 98% and superior co-catalytic activity of ~5000 kg·(mol Fe)–1·h–1 are achieved with optimized parameters in this single-pass platform, demonstrating the advantages of process.

Abstract:We present a flow strategy to characterize reaction enthalpy and showcase the application in synthesis of alkylaluminoxanes from the fast and exothermic alkylaluminum hydrolysis. Our platform mainly encompasses a three-dimensional printed micromixer and a tubular reactor in an adiabatic vacuum box, aided by a thermal imaging camera to record temperature profiles. The temperature increase at steady state is used to calculate the released heat, which is further decoupled to quantify the reaction enthalpy and enthalpy of mixing. We validate the concept with the classic neutralization reaction between sulfuric acid and sodium hydroxide, with less than 2% deviation from theoretical values. In application, we determine the exothermic reaction enthalpy and the endothermic enthalpy of mixing to be −143.13 and +7.66 kJ/mol for triisobutylaluminum hydrolysis and −164.63 and +5.03 kJ/mol for trimethylaluminum hydrolysis, respectively. The presented platform, on the one hand, yields new insights into the microreactor scale-up for alkylaluminoxane synthesis and, on the other hand, can be readily used to measure reaction enthalpies of other reactions.
Effects of Methylaluminoxane Modifications on Tuning the Bis(Imino)Pyridyl Iron‐Catalyzed Oligomerization of Ethylene

Abstract:For the purpose of reducing the simultaneous production of insoluble polymers during the bis(imino)pyridyl iron‐catalyzed ethylene oligomerization, various modifiers like phenol, anisole, 1‐naphthol, 2‐naphthol, benzoic acid, cyclohexanol, cyclohexyl carbinol, and benzyl alcohol were employed to modify the co‐catalyst methylaluminoxane (MAO) and tune the catalytic behaviors in this work. It was found that phenol could serve as a good polymer‐retarding modifier, the phenolic hydroxyl group was responsible for the interactions with MAO. Further increasing the aromatic ring size from phenol to naphthols was beneficial for retarding the polymer formation. Meanwhile, an increase of the acidity of the modifiers would promote the interactions between them and MAO, but also tend to easily deactivate the catalytic system. In addition, the alcohol modifiers with a phenol‐like structure were also studied, their deactivation effect was found to be stronger than their polymer‐retarding effect, making them difficult to obtain a satisfactory low polymer formation with the catalytic system remaining a high activity. Abstract:Separation of methylalumoxane (MAO) by adsorption on siliceous porous materials with different average pore diameters has been carried out; polymerization of ethylene was conducted with Cp2ZrCl2 using the separated MAO as cocatalyst, it was found that the MAO adsorbed on MCM-41 with average pore size of ca. 25 Angstrom is very effective for ethylene polymerization.

Abstract:Microfluidic synthesis is one of the most state-of-the-art methods for preparing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) attributed to its high mass/heat transfer efficiency and controllable reaction process. However, the post-processing of the products in most of the currently reported liquid-liquid microfluidic synthesis methods is complicated and can burden the environment due to the using of oil phase. Herein, we report a simple, efficient and versatile method for the preparation of MOFs through an air-liquid segmented flow reaction. Six classical MOFs (HKUST-1, Co-MOF-74, Cu-BDC, MOF-801, UiO-66 and MOF-808) with homogeneous morphologies and different topologies are successfully synthesized by the air-liquid segmented flow method. The prepared A-MOFs exhibited high crystallinity, high space-time yield (STY), homogeneous morphology, smaller particle size, higher surface area compared to the samples synthesized by the solvothermal method, which will benefit the practical applications of MOFs in many fields, such as gas adsorption, catalysis and so on.

Abstract:An environmentally friendly one-pot synthetic method based on green chemistry was developed to prepare thermodynamically partially compatible poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide)/poly(methylmethacrylate) (PPO/PMMA) alloy in water. The oxidative polymerization of 2,6-dimethylphenol in alkaline aqueous solution was firstly conducted and then methyl methacrylate (MMA) was added into the reactor before the end of polymerization. MMA could penetrate into PPO particles and then in situ reverse atom transfer radical polymerization (RATRP) of methyl methacrylate was initiated by 2,2'-azobis[2-(2-imidazolin-2-yl)propane] dihydrochloride after the oxidative polymerization. Both the oxidative polymerization of 2,6-dimethylphenol and RATRP of methyl methacrylate were catalyzed by the complex of CuCl2 and 4-dimethylaminopyridine. Finally, thermodynamically partially compatible PPO/PMMA alloy was successfully prepared which possessed a multi-layer core-shell structure with two polymers embedded in each other.

Abstract:Catalytic oxidation of alcohols to their correspondingaldehydesand ketones plays a fundamental role in many industries, but conventionalstrategies suffer from high costs, harsh reaction conditions, andlow energy efficiency. Here, we combine the p-xylyleneglycol oxidation with the hydrogen evolution reaction via an I-/I-3 (-) redox mediator inan electrochemical flow system where inexpensive graphite felt (GF)is utilized as electrodes. In comparison to traditional chemical oxidation,the electrochemical flow synthesis via the mediator I-/I-3 (-) could offer an outstanding p-hydroxymethyl benzaldehyde selectivity of 96.5% and aFaradaic efficiency of 84.8%. Besides, we realize the gram-scale synthesisof p-hydroxymethyl benzaldehyde at the current densityof 25 mA/cm(2) with low energy consumption because of theprepared catalytically efficient GF-Cu7S4 andGF-Pt electrodes. We explore different substrates and observe theflexible adaptability of our proposed flow synthesis strategy, demonstratingits potential for industrial applications. An electrochemical flow synthesis strategyis proposed hereinfor the gram-scale synthesis of p-hydroxymethyl benzaldehydewith low energy consumption.

Abstract:Methylation of acetoin with dimethyl carbonate was performed in a sustainable one-step process, with improved process mass intensity (PMI) and atom economy compared to previously published methods. The resulting product, 3-methoxybutan-2-one (MO) was successfully evaluated as a bio-based solvent, while both Kamlet-Taft solvatochromic parameters and Hansen solubility parameters demonstrate its potential viability in the substitution of chlorinated solvents. MO exhibited a low peroxide forming potential and a negative Ames mutagenicity test and was successfully used as a solvent in a Friedel-Crafts acylation (79% yield compared to 77% in dichloromethane) and for N-alkylations. MO is a renewable oxygenated solvent, with the potential ability to substitute carcinogenic halogenated solvents in some applications.

Abstract:A three-stage fluidized bed strategy was proposed to enhance the conversion of methanol into aromatics (MTA) with Zn/ZSM-5 catalyst, where the 1st stage (near the bottom) served the aromatization of methanol, the 2nd stage (in the middle) served the aromatization of C-3-C-5 paraffins and the 3rd stage (near the exit) served mainly the aromatization of C-2-C-4 olefins in sequence. The yield of aromatics in the 2nd stage increased by 7.0-9.0% compared with the 1st stage. And the final yield of aromatics at the exit of 3rd stage was kept at 62-66% for a long time, 8.0-15.0% higher than that of the exit of 1st stage. The effect of coke deposition in different stages on the evolution of aromatics, olefins and alkanes was investigated to clarify the consecutive reaction chain during MTA. As fully meeting the requirements of the different conversion characteristics of methanol and their intermediates, very high-yield production of aromatics by the single-pass conversion of methanol was achieved with this strategy. Abstract:The efficient separation of 4-methyl-1-pentene (4MP1) from its structural isomers is crucial for industrial applications but remains challenging due to the similar physicochemical properties of these compounds. This study introduces a novel strategy using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), specifically an engineered variant of ZIF-108, which demonstrates remarkable improvements in the thermodynamic and kinetic properties for 4MP1 separation. By substituting the methyl groups in ZIF-8 with planar nitro groups, we achieved a strategic resizing of the pore windows and cavity dimensions in ZIF-108. This adjustment not only enhanced the molecular affinity and selectivity toward 4MP1 but also facilitated a diffusion rate that is 164 times faster than that observed in ZIF-8. These properties significantly elevated the performance of ZIF-108 in simulated moving bed (SMB) processes, achieving up to 96.5% recovery of high-purity 4MP1, outperforming traditional adsorbents. Comprehensive characterization, including density functional theory (DFT) calculations and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, provided insights into the interactions and the stability of the adsorption process. The findings suggest that the strategic modification of the pore architecture in MOFs holds significant potential for optimizing the separation processes of industrially relevant mixtures.
Continuous Flow Synthesis of Methyl Oximino Acetoacetate: Accessing Greener Purification Methods with Inline Liquid–Liquid Extraction and Membrane Separation Technology

Abstract:A greener continuous flow procedure for the synthesis and purification of methyl oximino acetoacetate, a key intermediate for the generation of several heterocyclic scaffolds, has been established. The synthesis is based on the continuous flow generation of nitrous acid to effect the oximation reaction. Neat reactants and a nearly saturated aqueous NaNO2 solution have provided a methodology with a very low solvent consumption. The extraction of the oxime from the reaction mixture, a challenging process due to the presence of acetic acid in the solution, has been achieved by liquid–liquid extraction in a microreactor and a continuous multistage phase separation platform. Fine-tuning of the output pH by inline monitoring using a flow cell has enabled optimal extraction performance as well as the minimization of the acetic acid residue in the organic phase and the use of very low amounts of extraction solvents. An excellent value for the process mass intensity of 11.1 has been achieved. Moreover, the lack of acetic acid in the product avoids an additional and energy-consuming distillation step.

Abstract:Decades of research unveiled the unlimited potential of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Nevertheless, the hazadous and expensive production involving massive amounts of organic solvents has severely frustrated their widespread industrial adoption. Herein, the advantages of two eco-friendly strategies, base-assisted synthesis and modulated hydrothermal chemistry, were complementarily integrated, with the acetate anion introduced as a mild and efficacious modulator to regulate the coordination and tailor the crystallization pathway(s). The green, rapid, and scalable synthesis of a dual-ligand Zn-MOF was thereby achieved in water media, featuring an unprecedented space-time yield of 24 ton/m 3 ·day and a batch size exceeding kilogram (i.e., 1.2 kg). Attributed to its strong affinity toward CH 4 , the acquired Zn-MOF demonstrated a considerable CH 4 /N 2 separation capacity under ambient conditions. This study not only facilitates the green and scalable production of MOFs but also offers an cost-effective adsorbent for CH 4 recovery.

Abstract:Herein, we presented a strategy that tuning the pore environment via installing functional sites in the pores to boost C2H6/C2H4 separation performance of MOFs. To prove this strategy, four isoreticular MOFs [MAF-X10, -X10(Me), -X10(Cl), and -X10(F)] were designed and synthesized based on reticular chemistry principle, which featured the regulated pore environment and exhibited intriguing differences in C2H6 and C2H4 uptakes. Methyl group-modified nonpolar pores endow these MOFs with impressive C2H6-selective behavior and high C2H6 loadings (>110 cm3 g−1), in which MAF-X10(F) with polar F sites exhibited the highest C2H6 uptake (140.5 cm3 g−1) among four MOFs, ranking the top compared to the reported MOF materials. The polar sites-functionalized MAF-X10(Cl) and -X10(F) showed the significantly improved C2H6/C2H4 separation performances in comprehensive of selectivity, separation potential, C2H4 productivity, which were mainly contributed to the strong C-H⋯Cl/F interactions formed between the active sites (Cl or F) in MAF-X10(Cl)/(F) and C2H6, as revealed by molecular simulations.

Abstract:The traditional batch production process for methyl sulfone (MSM) from dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is highly exothermic and poses serious safety risks. In this work, we present a continuous-flow synthesis strategy using microchannel reactors to enhance the safety and efficiency of industrial-scale MSM production. Four specifications of microchannel reactors have been constructed and then were applied for the continuous-flow synthesis of MSM with both high yield and purity. The effects of the channel diameter, water bath temperature, catalytic dosage, residence time, and segmented temperature control on MSM yield were systematically investigated. By gradually optimizing the design parameters, the yield of MSM in the industrialized microchannel reactor reached 95.3%, and the average annual time yield of MSM was 18.36 t·a–1. In addition, the maximum overlimit temperature in the continuous flow does not exceed 10 °C, and the overtemperature time is less than 20 s. Dual temperature-controlled continuous-flow process was more beneficial to increase the yield of MSM. The microchannel continuous-flow amplification process can greatly improve the productivity of MSM while ensuring the high yield of MSM, which is a promising strategy for the efficient and safe production of MSM at an industrial scale.

Abstract:1,2-Dimethyl-3-methylsulfanylbenzene is the key intermediate of topramezone. This work designed a two-step continuous-flow device to synthesize 1,2-dimethyl-3- methylsulfanylbenzene via diazotization and methanethiolation. The results showed that compared with the batch process, the continuous-flow method greatly shortened the residence time to 1 minute, avoided the accumulation of large amounts of diazonium salts to reduce decomposition and increased the product yield to 91.7%. At the same time, the continuous- flow process improved the safety and efficiency of the reactions, saved reaction time and had good prospects for industrial application.

Abstract:Methylaluminoxane (MAO) is commonly employed to activate molecular pre-catalysts in polyolefin synthesis, both indus-trially and in the laboratory. Despite the extensive use of this compound, the ambiguity related to its structure hampers the understanding of its structure–function relationship. The current study therefore employed synchrotron X-ray total scattering to elucidate the nano-sized molecular structure of MAO. The MAO samples, which were prepared using various synthetic protocols, exhibited consistent X-ray scattering patterns and atomic pair distribution function curves, indicating similar molecular structures. However, the scattering intensity in the small-angle region revealed differences in the high-er-order structures. A fitting study performed using 172 molecular models showed that small molecule and tube models were inadequate to reproduce the experimental results, whereas cage and sheet models provided comparably better fits. The sheet model was found to be consistent with the observed molecular weight and the molecular weight distribution, in addition to accounting for the intensity in the small-angle scattering region. These results align with recent crystallo-graphic findings reported in Science, where a stacked sheet model successfully reproduced an experimental X-ray dif-fraction pattern. Ultimately, determination of the structural motif of MAO is expected to be beneficial to systematic re-search and development using this compound.
