Abstract:Conversion of methane to syngas (H2 and CO) using lattice oxygen almost not produces the over-oxidized product of CO2, and it is promising for widespread applications in pursuit of net-zero emission. Understanding the relationship between lattice oxygen species and methane conversion activity is crucial to construct high-performance catalysts. However, investigations seldom have focused on the dynamic trends of surface lattice oxygen. In this work, transition metals of Co, Fe, and Cu were introduced into MgO to regulate the original oxygen coordination environment and distinct reaction pathways of surface lattice oxygen. The conversion of methane to syngas below 450 degrees C was successfully achieved. It is con-firmed that CuO modification facilitated the combination of methane and surface lattice oxygen around active metals of Cu to form critical intermediates of CH3O and CHO for the direct generation of CO in the kinetics of the process. As a result, the formation rate of H2 and CO using Cu-MgO catalyst was enhanced by a factor of 6.1 and 7.9 times (983.7 and 311.7 lmol g-1 min-1) than that of MgO catalyst (162.1 and 39.3 lmol g-1 min-1). The overall understanding of these model catalysts provided by this investigation can give an efficient strategy to convert methane using lattice oxygen at mild temperatures. (c) 2023 Elsevier Ltd.
