Abstract:The applications of nonlinear dynamics and fractal theory to the geosciences have greatly broadened our view, and promoted re-evaluation of our traditional thinking. The complexities of geosystem can be better described using theoretical and numerical models in fractal time-space domain. The concepts of fractal media and fractal stratigraphy are not only true reflections of the fundamental properties of true geological objects, but their introduction can also help to avoid extreme views about stratigraphy. In this paper, the duality of stratigraphy is discussed: at large scales the stratigraphy displays obvious layering, while at small scales, especially in reservoir medium description, macroscopic layering becomes secondary and microscopic variation in physical properties becomes dominant. Because of the differences in geological scales and objectives under consideration, people could have two different tendencies in geological medium descriptions. One would emphasize on the cyclicity and layering in stratigraphy, while someone else may consider that the subsurface media follow random distributions, and thus can be modeled by random processes. But in fact, both views are only special cases when viewed from a fractal perspective. Another natural step forward is bringing in fractional derivatives and using onset functions to extend the geological transitions from traditional step or ramp functions to generalized transition, and thereby to achieve more accurate geological measurement and description. We introduced at the end of the paper an observed multifractal carbonate sequence and demonstrated that fractal and multifractal are not only mathematical concepts, but can be real existence in the nature. Detailed stratigraphy and geochemistry studies on this carbonate sequence could help significantly in our understanding the complexities of paleo-environment or sea level variations.
Characterization of Engineering Ceramics Ground Surface Based on Fractal Theory

Abstract:Fractal method is introduced to characterize the ground surface of engineering ceramics. This work compared four methods to calculate the profile dimension,i.e., box dimension, variation method, wavelet transform method and different-average law method. The results show that the variation method is suitable to calculate the fractal dimension of engineering ceramics ground surface. By the texture, the anisotropic fractal model is suitable to simulate ceramics surface morphology. The validity of the variation method was examinedvia the comparison of the simulated surface and measured surface. Finally, the fractal dimension of four material specimens, i.e. steel, zirconia, alumina, and silicon nitride was determined. The results show that surface roughnessRa is not corre-lated to the fractal dimension.Ra will vary even for the same surface after the repeated measurements. However, the fractal dimension does not change. Besides, the texture in engineering ceramics ground surface is fine and dense, at a great fractal dimension. The tex-ture is sparse and coarse at a low fractal dimension.

Abstract:Fractals, Ahead of Print. Fractal geometry plays an important role in the description of the characteristics of nature. Local fractional calculus, a new branch of mathematics, is used to handle the non-differentiable problems in mathematical physics and engineering sciences. The local fractional inequalities, local fractional ODEs and local fractional PDEs via local fractional calculus are studied. Fractional calculus is also considered to express the fractal behaviors of the functions, which have fractal dimensions. The interesting problems from fractional calculus and fractals are reported. With the scaling law, the scaling-law vector calculus via scaling-law calculus is suggested in detail. Some special functions related to the classical, fractional, and power-law calculus are also presented to express the Kohlrausch–Williams–Watts function, Mittag-Leffler function and Weierstrass–Mandelbrot function. They have a relation to the ODEs, PDEs, fractional ODEs and fractional PDEs in real-world problems. Theory of the scaling-law series via Kohlrausch–Williams–Watts function is suggested to handle real-world problems. The hypothesis for the tempered Xi function is proposed as the Fractals Challenge, which is a new challenge in the field of mathematics. The typical applications of fractal geometry are proposed in real-world problems.

Abstract:Cement-based materials, including cement and concrete, are the most widely used construction materials in the world. In recent years, the investigation and application of fractal theory in cement-based materials have attracted a large amount of attention worldwide. The microstructures of cement-based materials, such as the pore structures, the mesostructures, such as air voids, and the morphological features of powders, as well as the fracture surfaces and cracks, commonly present extremely complex and irregular characteristics that are difficult to describe in terms of geometry but that can be studied by fractal theory. This paper summarizes the latest progress in the investigation and application of fractal theory in cement-based materials. Firstly, this paper summarizes the principles and classification of the seven fractal dimensions commonly used in cement-based materials. These fractal dimensions have different physical meanings since they are obtained from various testing techniques and fractal models. Then, the testing techniques and fractal models for testing and calculating these fractal dimensions are introduced and analyzed individually, such as the mercury intrusion porosimeter (MIP), nitrogen adsorption/desorption (NAD), and Zhang’s model, Neimark’s model, etc. Finally, the applications of these fractal dimensions in investigating the macroproperties of cement-based materials are summarized and discussed. These properties mainly include the mechanical properties, volumetric stability, durability (e.g., permeability, frost and corrosion resistance), fracture mechanics, as well as the evaluation of the pozzolanic reactivity of the mineral materials and the dispersion state of the powders.

Abstract:Interactions between soil, fluids (e.g., water), and structures are intrinsic to most geotechnical problems. However, these can be extremely complex and further understanding is needed in this field. Soil–water–structure interactions can be studied on many different scales (micro to macro) and perspectives (experimental, numerical, and theoretical). In any case, the consequences of these interactions control soil behaviour, the stability of civil infrastructure, and, ultimately, the safety of our communities. This Special Issue consists of five papers (three research papers and two literature reviews) that highlight the importance of soil–water–structure interactions in a broad range of different applications. The topics addressed in the research contributions include (a) the performance of shallow footings under oblique loads, (b) the assessment of nonlinear base-isolated building systems under dynamic loading, and (c) the applicability of lightweight materials as fill for retaining wall systems. The other innovative papers, on the other hand, provide comprehensive reviews on (d) the role of the clay content in the interface characteristics between sand–clay mixtures and structures and (e) the latest developments in the understanding and measurements of the Atterberg limits.

Abstract:Fractional calculus is now a well-established tool in engineering science, with very promising applications in materials modelling. Indeed, several studies have shown that fractional operators can successfully describe complex long-memory and multiscale phenomena in materials, which can hardly be captured by standard mathematical approaches as, for instance, classical differential calculus. Furthermore, fractional calculus has recently proved to be an excellent framework for modelling non-conventional fractal and non-local media, opening valuable prospects on future engineered materials. The theme issue gathers cutting-edge theoretical, computational and experimental studies on advanced materials modelling via fractional calculus, with a focus on complex phenomena and non-conventional media. This article is part of the theme issue ‘Advanced materials modelling via fractional calculus: challenges and perspectives’.

This tendency is particularly striking in the geosciences, because many processes occurring in and on the Earth result in time dependences and spatial patterns that have a fractal character. The contributions in this volume arose from the "3rd International Symposium on Fractals and Dynamic Systems in Geosciences", held at Stara Lesna, Slovakia in June, 1997. The volume contains new ideas and applications of fractal geometry in such diverse branches of geoscience as engineering geology, the physics of the lithosphere (including faulting, seismicity, and fluid flow), and climate behavior.

Abstract:The surface properties and pore structure of minerals/rocks are key parameters controlling their geochemical dynamic behaviors. Characterizing these properties on the nanometer scale is greatly significant for geochemical researches and development of new materials. Fractal dimension is an integrated parameter to describe quantitatively the roughness of the surface and the pore-structure in the geological materials. A method for fractal study based on gas adsorption isotherms is introduced in this paper. The suitability and advantages are discussed in the view of the theoretical argument. Based on the review of application of this method in organic petrology, pedology and material sciences, the application prospect of this method in earth science is schemed.

Abstract:This article portrays solid xerogel-type materials, based on chitosan, TEGylated phenothiazine, and TEG (tri-ethylene glycol), dotted with a large number of pores, that are effectively represented in their constitutive structure. They were assumed to be fractal geometrical entities and adjudged as such. The acoustic fractional propagation equation in a fractal porous media was successfully applied and solved with the help of Bessel functions. In addition, the fractal character was demonstrated by the produced fractal analysis, and it has been proven on the evaluated scanning electron microscopy (SEM) pictures of porous xerogel compounds. The fractal parameters (more precisely, the fractal dimension), the lacunarity, and the Hurst index were calculated with great accuracy.
