Abstract:We present a hierarchical multi-scale framework to model geotechnical problems relevant to granular media. The framework employs a rigorous hierarchical coupling between the Finite Element Method (FEM) and the Discrete Element Method (DEM). The FEM is used to discretise the macroscopic geometric domain of a boundary value problem into a FEM mesh. A DEM assembly with memory of its loading history is embedded at each Gauss integration point of the mesh to receive the global deformation from the FEM as input boundary conditions and is solved for the incremental stress-strain relation at the specific material point to advance the FEM computation. The hierarchical framework helps to avoid the phenomenological nature of conventional continuum approaches of constitutive modelling and meanwhile retains the computational efficiency of the FEM in solving large-scale Boundary Value Problems (BVPs). By virtue of its hierarchical structure, the predictive power of the proposed method can be further unleashed with proper implementation of parallel computing techniques. By corroborating the rich information obtained from the particle level with the macroscopically observed responses, the framework helps to shed light on a cross-scale understanding of granular media. We demonstrate the predictive capability of the proposed framework by simulations of shear localisations in monotonic biaxial compression and cavity inflation in a thick-walled cylinder, as well as liquefaction and cyclic mobility in cyclic simple shear tests.
Universality of Internal Structure Characteristics in Granular Media under Shear.

Abstract:We examine the signatures of internal structure emerged from quasistatic shear responses of granular materials based on three-dimensional discrete element simulations. Granular assemblies consisting of spheres or nonspherical particles of different polydispersity are sheared from different initial densities and under different loading conditions (drained or undrained) steadily to reach the critical state (a state featured by constant stress and constant volume). The radial distribution function used to measure the packing structure is found to remain almost unchanged during the shearing process, regardless of the initial states or loading conditions of an assembly. Its specific form, however, varies with polydispersities in both grain size and grain shape. Set Voronoi tessellation is employed to examine the characteristics of local volume and anisotropy, and deformation. The local inverse solid fraction and anisotropy index are found following inverse Weibull and log-normal distributions, respectively, which are unique at the critical states. With further normalization, an invariant distribution for local volume and anisotropy is observed whose function can be determined by the polydispersities in both particle size and grain shape but bears no relevance to initial densities or loading conditions (or paths). An invariant Gaussian distribution is found for the local deformation for spherical packings, but no invariant distribution can be found for nonspherical packings where the distribution of normalized local volumetric strain is dependent on initial states.

Abstract:This paper presents a micromechanical study on the behavior of granular materials under confined shear using a three-dimensional Discrete Element Method (DEM). We consider rotational resistance among spherical particles in the DEM code as an approximate way to account for the effect of particle shape. Under undrained shear, it is found rotational resistance may help to increase the shear strength of a granular system and to enhance its resistance to liquefaction. The evolution of internal structure and anisotropy in granular systems with different initial conditions depict a clear bimodal character which distinguishes two contact subnetworks. In the presence of rotational resistance, a good correlation is found between an analytical stress-force-fabric relation and the DEM results, in which the normal force anisotropy plays a dominant role. The unique properties of critical state and liquefaction state in relation to granular anisotropy are also explored and discussed.

Abstract:In order to understand the dynamics of granular flow on an erodible base soil, in this paper, a series of material point method - based granular column collapse tests were conducted to investigate numerically the mobility and dynamic erosion process of granular flow subjected to the complex settings, i.e., the aspect ratio, granular mass, friction and dilatancy resistance, gravity and presence of water. A set of power scaling laws were proposed to describe the final deposit characteristics of granular flow by the relations of the normalized run - out distance and the normalized final height of granular flow against the aspect ratio, being greatly affected by the complex geological settings, e.g., granular mass, the friction and dilatancy resistance of granular soil, and presence of water in granular flow. An index of the coefficient of friction of granular soil was defined as a ratio of the target coefficient of friction over the initial coefficient of friction to quantify the scaling extent of friction change (i.e., friction strengthening or weakening). There is a characteristic aspect ratio of granular column corresponding to the maximum mobility of granular flow with the minimum index of the apparent coefficient of friction. The index of the repose coefficient of friction of granular flow decreased gradually with the increase in aspect ratio because higher potential energy of granular column at a larger aspect ratio causes a larger kinetic energy of granular soil to weaken the friction of granular soil as a kind of velocity - related friction weakening. An increase in granular mass reduces gradually the indexes of the apparent and repose coefficients of friction of granular soil to enhance the mobility of granular flow. The mobility of granular flow increases gradually with the decrease in friction angle or increase in dilatancy angle of granular soil. However, the increase of gravity accelerates granular flow but showing the same final deposit profile without any dependence on gravity. The mobility of granular flow increases gradually by lowering the indexes of the apparent and repose coefficients of friction of granular flow while changing the surroundings, in turn, the dry soil, submerged soil and saturated soil, implying a gradually increased excessive mobility of granular flow with the friction weakening of granular soil. Presence of water in granular flow may be a potential catalyzer to yield a long run - out granular flow, as revealed in comparison of water - absent and water - present granular flows. In addition, the dynamic erosion and entrainment of based soil induced by granular flow subjected to the complex geological settings, i.e., the aspect ratio, granular mass, gravity, friction and dilatancy resistance, and presence of water, were comprehensively investigated as well.

Abstract:Granular matter is a large assemblage of solid particles, which is fundamentally different from any other type of matters, such as solid and liquid. Most models presented for granular matter are phenomenological and are only suitable for solving engineering problems. Many fundamental mechanical problems remain open. By analyzing characteristics of internal state structure, we propose that granular matter is intrinsically multiscale, i.e. microscale of particle size, mesoscale of force chain, and macroscale of the bulk of granular matter. The correlations among difference scales would be crucial. The mesoscale force chain network is determined by both particle properties and macroscopic boundary conditions. The evolution of the force chain network contributes to macroscopic mechanical properties of granular matter. In addition, we discuss the drawbacks in simplifying contact forces in the current models, and the difficulties in analyzing the interaction of interstitial fluid in wet granular matter. As an appropriate application of granular matter, debris flow can be studied with granular matter mechanics; meanwhile, debris flow brings more challenges which certainly motivate future studies on granular matter.

Abstract:The granular materials are composed of a collection of discrete and solid particles,such as coarse sands and debris accumulation.Using data from experiments or based on engineering experiences,numerous models are developed to describe certain mechanical phenomena of granular materials.However,our understandings of the mechanical properties of granular materials and their physical nature remain limited.The specific mechanical properties of granular materials come from complicated processes of the energy transportation,the disordered structure in the long-range and the ordered structure in the short-range.In this paper,some developments in measuring the inherent structural characteristics,the thermodynamics,and the transformation between solid and fluid states of granular materials are discussed.A new research approach is proposed to unify the thermodynamics and the structural analysis to have a better understanding of granular materials.

Abstract:Mechanical behavior of granular soils is a classic research realm but still yet not completely understood as it can be influenced by a large number of factors, including confining pressure, soil density, loading conditions, and anisotropy of soil etc. Traditionally granular materials are macroscopically regarded as continua and their particulate and discrete nature has not been thoroughly considered although many researches indicate the macro mechanical behavior closely depends on the micro-scale characteristics of particles. This paper presents a DEM (discrete element method)-based micromechanical investigation of inter-particle friction effects on the behavior of granular materials. In this study, biaxial DEM simulations are carried out under both ‘drained’ and ‘undrained’ (constant volume) conditions. The numerical experiments employ samples having similar initial isotropic fabric and density, and the same confining pressure, but with different inter-particle friction coefficient. Test results show that the inter-particle friction has a substantial effect on the stress-strain curve, peak strength and dilatancy characteristics of the granular assembly. Clearly, it is noted that apart from the inter-particle friction, the shear resistance is also contributed to the dilation and the particle packing and arrangements. The corresponding microstructure evolutions and variations in contact properties in the particulate level are also elaborated, to interpret the origin of the different macro-scale response due to variations in the inter-particle friction.

Abstract:Granular materials are associated with the irreversible behaviors during the loading-unloading-reloading path, the mechanism of which can be analyzed in terms of complex network evolutions. In this paper, the discrete element method is used to conduct triaxial tests for granular materials under the loading-unloading-reloading condition. The macroscopic responses of the granular materials and its corresponding complex network characteristics of different strong contact systems are analyzed. It is found that the macroscopic "hysteresis loop" is formed during the loading-unloading-reloading path of dense granular materials, and the microscopic coordination numbers and clustering coefficients also exhibit irreversible behaviors. Different thresholds are used to classify the strong and weak contact systems for granular materials under different loading and unloading stress states, and the difference in the mesostructure corresponding to each stress state decrease as the threshold increases. The maximum cluster of the strong contact system reaches the limit of percolation when the force threshold falls in a range, and the irreversible behaviors of granular materials can be reflected in the geometric and topological features of strong network during the loading-unloading-reloading path.

Abstract:A granular material is a conglomeration of discrete solid,macroscopic particles characterized by a loss of energy whenever the particles interact.Granular materials are omnipresent in nature,industrial practice and daily life,with size spanning from 1μm to a few meters.The mechanical properties have long been studied. In recent two decades,many laboratory scale tests have been conducted and novel phenomena were observed. Both theoretical studies,such as granular matter statistical mechanics,granular solid hydrodynamics,and measurement techniques,such as X-ray CT,photoelastics,have witnessed great breakthrough.The revealed physical mechanism prompt ones to examine the assumptions,concepts,models and theories that previously proposed and being used.In this review paper,major fundamental problems are presented introduced and discussed,including the characteristics of microscale structure,procedure of micro-macro study with Rowe stress dilatancy relation as an example,derivation of stress and strain from microscale structure,the relation of macroscale strength with particle friction,size effect and similarity.In addition,granular soil as a typical granular material,its new developments are summarized.The frequently used techniques are introduced as well. Finally,we present a few aspects in which research should be reinforced,such as examining the assumptions in the discrete element method and checking the computing details,conducting the ideal physical and numerical experiments;by lying on the fast development of high performance computing,carrying on high scientific confidence degree large scale computation of granular materials with high scientific confidence degree;with the help of fast development of high performence computers.The mechanics of granular materials is still at its infancy stage,and there is a long way to directly solve the engineering problems.Essential development of related engineering technologies depends certainly on progress or break-through in the of fundamental studies of granular material mechanics.

Abstract:A dense granular material (GM) is composed of dense random packing of solid particles and posses disorder structures which has been a long-standing mystery. On the one hand, GMs are amorphous materials with no long-range structural order; on the other hand, both topological and mechanical short range order are pronounced in these materials, due to their high granular packing density. The unique internal structure of GMs underlies their unique mechanical ad physical properties, which render GMs are useful for various applications in more and more engineering and industries in recent years, such as rock-filled dams, granular type debris flows, and the pebble-bed High Temperature Reactor. However, fundamental knowledge on the structural aspect of GMs remains seriously lacking. For example, how the granular mesoscopic structures are formed on the short-to-medium range, how the structure differs in different GMs and changes with granular composition, external loadings, and processing history and methods, and more importantly, how the structure influences the properties of GMS, are still well answered questions. Granular materials are currently the most actively studied materials. In this paper, we review the tremendous efforts over the past decades devoted to unraveling the particle-level structure of GMs and the structural origin of their unique mechanical behaviors, including the simplified inter-particle contact models and the structure measurement techniques and analysis methods. The failure of granular materials play a vital role in transition from solid-to fluid-like states. The related jamming transition, the concepts of "soft spots" and the micro-displacement measurement techniques are then analyzed. Outstanding questions in this research area will be outlined. Suggestions are proposed as well. The studies on the fundamental problems of granular materials should employ the cutting edge studies of the condensed physics and mathematics to establish new concepts. Because of extensive uses in engineering and industries, the fundamental studies are suggested to closely connect with engineering and industries by focusing on the core technologies, which would greatly prompt the development of this research area.

Abstract:Granular matter is a large assemblage of individual solids, which is fundamentally different from any other type of matters, such as solid and liquid. The intrinsic nature of granular matter is of multi-scale, inclusive of microscale of particle size, mesoscale of force chain and macroscale of the bulk of granular matter. The mesoscale of force chain bridges single particle and granular matter, and leads to unique properties and behaviours of granular matters, and thus acts as the key issue in the study of granular matter. In this work, we firstly propose a multiscale methodology for granular matter dynamics, and point out that the characteristics of force chain is the key to the granular dynamics. We then propose a discrete element model based on rigorous Hertzian contact law and Mindlin-Deresiewicz contact theory for normal and tangential contact forces, respectively. The static packing of 12000 sand grains under the action of gravity in two dimensions is simultaed, and the force chain pattern and stress distribution are obtained. The force distribution, force chain length distribution and the angle distribution are calculated and analyzed. Friction coefficient of particle is found to be a very sensitive factor affecting properties of granular matter, and thus its influence on the above parameters is studied as well.
The effects of packing structure on the effective thermal conductivity of granular media: A grain scale investigation

Abstract:Structural characteristics are considered to be the dominant factors in determining the effective properties of granular media, particularly in the scope of transport phenomena. Towards improved heat management, thermal transport in granular media requires an improved fundamental understanding. In this study, the effects of packing structure on heat transfer in granular media are evaluated at macro- and grain-scales. At the grain-scale, a gas-solid coupling heat transfer model is adapted into a discrete-element-method to simulate this transport phenomenon. The numerical framework is validated by experimental data obtained using a plane source technique, and the Smoluschowski effect of the gas phase is found to be captured by this extension. By considering packings of spherical SiO2 grains with an interstitial helium phase, vibration induced ordering in granular media is studied, using the simulation methods developed here, to investigate how disorder-to-order transitions of packing structure enhance effective thermal conductivity. Grain-scale thermal transport is shown to be influenced by the local neighbourhood configuration of individual grains. The formation of an ordered packing structure enhances both global and local thermal transport. This study provides a structure approach to explain transport phenomena, which can be applied in properties modification for granular media.

Abstract:Purpose - Granular materials possess multiscale structures, i. e. micro-scales involving atoms and molecules in a solid particle, meso-scales involving individual particles and their correlated structure, and macroscopic assembly. Strong and abundant dissipations are exhibited due to mesoscopic unsteady motion of individual grains, and evolution of underlying structures (e. g. force chains, vortex, etc.), which defines the key differences between granular materials and ordinary objects. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the major studies have been conducted in recent two decades.Design/methodology/approach - The main properties at individual scale are introduced, including the coordination number, pair-correlation function, force and mean stress distribution functions, and the dynamic correlation function. The relationship between meso-and macro-scales is analyzed, such as between contact force and stress, the elastic modulus, and bulk friction in granular flows. At macroscales, conventional engineering models (i. e. elasto-plastic and hypo-plastic ones) are introduced. In particular, the so-called granular hydrodynamics theory, derived from thermodynamics principles, is explained.Findings - On the basis of recent study the authors conducted, the multiscales (both spatial and temporal) in granular materials are first explained, and a multiscale framework is presented for the mechanics of granular materials.Originality/value - It would provide a paramount view on the multiscale studies of granular materials.

Abstract:The intrinsic complexity of granular materials stems from the fact that the characterizing variables at the micro-scale and the macro-scale are of different nature. Macroscopically, tensorial variables (stress tensor, strain tensor, fabric tensor) are commonly used based on Representative Volume Element (RVE), while vectorial variables (contact force, contact displacement, contact normal) are adopted at particle-scale. This paper mainly discusses some basic characterizations for these two scales, as well as their correlations. Numerical simulations using Discrete Element Method (DEM) are then conducted to show the evolutions of both microscopic and macroscopic variables during monotonic loading. It is indicated that the particle reorientations in the dense sample are much more pronounced than that in the loose one during shearing.

Abstract:The granular flow in a particle moving bed with a side exit at the bottom was simulated by using a three-equation discrete element method(DEM) model that considers rolling friction.It was demonstrated that the computational granular dynamics(CGD) method can accurately predict the flow behavior of the particles in the complex granular systems,including the time averaged velocity field and the velocity fluctuations.The granular flow had certain similarities to fluid flow,such as the random fluctuation of velocities.However,the physical mechanism for the intermittent behavior in the granular flow was different from fluid flow.The granular flow showed great discontinuity.The friction coefficients of particles,which greatly affected the dynamics in the granular flow were discussed in the numerical simulations.

Abstract:A multiscale simulation method for modeling granular materials was proposed in this paper. The key links in this method were analyzed, and the computing framework was constructed. In this multiscale approach, the finite-element method was used to simulate the boundary value problem. From the discrete particle aggregation embedded in each gauss integral point, the constitutive relation was extracted for the overall solution. This approach did not require complex constitutive hypotheses on the macroscopic scale. The description of the contact constitutive behavior between particles was relatively simple on the mesoscopic scale. Meanwhile, the macroscopic response could be effectively described by the mesoscopic mechanism. After a program verification, a representative test was numerically modeled using this technique. Through biaxial compression multiscale test of particles, macro–mesoscopic mechanical properties were investigated. The present approach may prove useful in expanding our understanding of the mechanical behavior of granular materials.

Abstract:When granular materials are subjected to mechanical disturbance, dynamic heterogeneity can be observed. Although it has long been considered that dynamic heterogeneity is related to structure in material science, there were still few studies focusing on the structure–property of granular materials. In this study, we simulate conventional triaxial tests of polydisperse spheres using discrete element method. Different friction coefficients were used to represent different microscopic contact modes in the simulation. The machine learning (ML) model for predicting the plastic deformation of granular materials is successfully developed from particles’ local structural information using the eXtreme Gradient Boosting algorithm. Besides, we focus on how the structural indicators of granular materials affect the multiple physical and mechanical properties. We further observed and explained the variation of ML predictive power in granular systems with different friction coefficients. Overall, our study presents a more intensive and innovative insight into the structure–property relationship of granular materials.

Abstract:This paper studies the effects of angularity and coarse particle content on the shear behaviour of granular mixtures via the discrete element method. The contributions of different contact types to the shear strength are quantified, which can be used to classify the structure of granular mixtures. After that, a microscopic analysis of the effect of angularity on the thresholds of the granular mixtures is presented. Finally, a method that can predict the critical friction angle of granular mixtures at arbitrary coarse particle contents is proposed. The validity of the prediction method is verified by comparisons with the experimental and numerical data in other studies.

Abstract:The most difficult aspect of the realistic modeling of granular materials is how to capture the real shape of the particles. Here we present a method to simulate granular materials with complex-shaped particles. The particle shape is represented by the classical concept of a Minkowski sum, which permits the representation of complex shapes without the need to define the object as a composite of spherical or convex particles. A well defined interaction force between these bodies is derived. The algorithm for identification of neighbor particles reduces force calculations to O(N), where $N$ is the number of particles. The algorithm is much more efficient, accurate and easier to implement than other models. We investigate the existence of a statistical equilibrium in granular systems with circular non-spherical particles in the collisional. regime. We also investigate the limit state of dissipative granular materials using biaxial test simulations. The results are consistent with the classical assumption of the statistical mechanics for non-dissipative systems, and the critical state theory of soils mechanics for dissipative granular materials.
