Abstract:The granular materials are utilized in a wide variety of industrial applications.The complex hydrodynamics of granular flow is still not fully understood.The models for particle flow are reviewed including continuum mechanics methods and discrete mechanics methods.The continuum mechanics methods are simple but have low accuracy.The discrete mechanics methods are fully based on the Lagrangian approach for the simulation of motion of granular material on the microscopic level of particles,and can describe the motion of particles more accurately.The theory and the applications of these models are briefly described.It is clear that every model has its own application range.It needs to make a further research on the model for particle flow in order to describe the motion of granular materials more factually and conveniently.
Mobility and Dynamic Erosion Process of Granular Flow: Insights from Numerical Investigation Using Material Point Method

Abstract:In order to understand the dynamics of granular flow on an erodible base soil, in this paper, a series of material point method - based granular column collapse tests were conducted to investigate numerically the mobility and dynamic erosion process of granular flow subjected to the complex settings, i.e., the aspect ratio, granular mass, friction and dilatancy resistance, gravity and presence of water. A set of power scaling laws were proposed to describe the final deposit characteristics of granular flow by the relations of the normalized run - out distance and the normalized final height of granular flow against the aspect ratio, being greatly affected by the complex geological settings, e.g., granular mass, the friction and dilatancy resistance of granular soil, and presence of water in granular flow. An index of the coefficient of friction of granular soil was defined as a ratio of the target coefficient of friction over the initial coefficient of friction to quantify the scaling extent of friction change (i.e., friction strengthening or weakening). There is a characteristic aspect ratio of granular column corresponding to the maximum mobility of granular flow with the minimum index of the apparent coefficient of friction. The index of the repose coefficient of friction of granular flow decreased gradually with the increase in aspect ratio because higher potential energy of granular column at a larger aspect ratio causes a larger kinetic energy of granular soil to weaken the friction of granular soil as a kind of velocity - related friction weakening. An increase in granular mass reduces gradually the indexes of the apparent and repose coefficients of friction of granular soil to enhance the mobility of granular flow. The mobility of granular flow increases gradually with the decrease in friction angle or increase in dilatancy angle of granular soil. However, the increase of gravity accelerates granular flow but showing the same final deposit profile without any dependence on gravity. The mobility of granular flow increases gradually by lowering the indexes of the apparent and repose coefficients of friction of granular flow while changing the surroundings, in turn, the dry soil, submerged soil and saturated soil, implying a gradually increased excessive mobility of granular flow with the friction weakening of granular soil. Presence of water in granular flow may be a potential catalyzer to yield a long run - out granular flow, as revealed in comparison of water - absent and water - present granular flows. In addition, the dynamic erosion and entrainment of based soil induced by granular flow subjected to the complex geological settings, i.e., the aspect ratio, granular mass, gravity, friction and dilatancy resistance, and presence of water, were comprehensively investigated as well.

Annual Review of Fluid Mechanics

Abstract:This review focuses on how the modeling of dense granular media has advanced over the last 15 years. The jumping-off point of our review is the μ( I) rheology for dry granular flow, which opened the door to generic flow field modeling but was primarily geared toward problems involving small monodisperse grains of simple shapes. Our review focuses on advances in modeling more material types and behaviors including new approaches for modeling finite-grain-size effects or nonlocality, polydispersity and unmixing, and nontrivial grain shapes. We also discuss growing application areas with tractable order-reduction strategies with a focus on intrusion and locomotion problems.

Why Granular Media Are Thermal, and Quite Normal, After All

Abstract:Two approaches exist to account for granular dynamics: The athermal one takes grains as elementary, the thermal one considers the total entropy that includes microscopic degrees of freedom such as phonons and electrons. Discrete element method (DEM), granular kinetic theory and athermal statistical mechanics (ASM) belong to the first, granular solid hydrodynamics (GSH) to the second one. A discussion of the conceptual differences between both is given here, leading, among others, to the following insights: (1) While DEM and granular kinetic theory are well justified to take grains as athermal, any entropic consideration is far less likely to succeed. (2) In addition to modeling grains as a gas of dissipative, rigid mass points, it is very helpful take grains as a thermal solid that has been sliced and diced. (3) General principles that appear invalid in granular media are repaired and restored once the true entropy is included. These abnormalities [such as invalidity of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, granular temperatures failing to equilibrate, and grains at rest unable to explore the phase space] are consequences of the athermal approximation, not properties of granular media.

Nonequilibrium Statistical Mechanics and Hydrodynamics for a Granular Fluid

Abstract:Granular fluids consist of collections of activated mesoscopic or macroscopic particles (e.g., powders or grains) whose flows often appear similar to those of normal fluids. To explore the qualitative and quantitative description of these flows an idealized model for such fluids, a system of smooth inelastic hard spheres, is considered. The single feature distinguishing granular and normal fluids being explored in this way is the inelasticity of collisions. The dominant differences observed in real granular fluids are indeed captured by this feature. Following a brief introductory description of real granular fluids and motivation for the idealized model, the elements of nonequilibrium statistical mechanics are recalled (observables, states, and their dynamics). Peculiarities of the hard sphere interactions are developed in detail. The exact microscopic balance equations for the number, energy, and momentum densities are derived and their averages described as the origin for a possible macroscopic continuum mechanics description. This formally exact analysis leads to closed, macroscopic hydrodynamic equations through the notion of a "normal" state. This concept is introduced and the Navier-Stokes constitutive equations are derived, with associated Green-Kubo expressions for the transport coefficients. A parallel description of granular gases is described in the context of kinetic theory, and the Boltzmann limit is identified critically. The construction of the "normal" solution to the kinetic equation is outlined, and Navier-Stokes order hydrodynamic equations are re-derived for a low density granular gas.

Abstract:A unified continuum-mechanical theory has been until now lacking for granular media, some believe it could not exist. Derived employing the hydrodynamic approach, GSH is such a theory, though as yet a qualitative one. The behavior being accounted for includes static stress distribution, elastic wave, elasto-plastic motion, the critical state and rapid dense flow. Abstract:From the onset of the subject, granular media have been defying the toolkit of statistical mechanics thus preventing from understanding their thermodynamical and rheological properties and making them one of the key remaining mysteries in science. In the present work, we offer a resolution to this problem in the case of static granular media by considering a collective behavior of 2D identical balls forming a granular pile in the gravity field, which allows us to develop its thermodynamics and rheology from the first principles. Besides the uncertainty due to rough substrate on which the pile is built, we uncover another one due to ambiguities occurring in the positions of some interior balls. Both are responsible for the thermodynamic description of the granular pile, which proves to be anything but ordinary. In particular, we show that a pile is characterized by three temperatures: one is infinite, the other is negative, and the third is of higher-order. Also, considering the fields of ball displacements $\boldsymbol{\xi}$ and the normal force deviations $\delta\boldsymbol{N}$ from the ideal isosceles triangular structure of a regular pile reveals the hyperbolic nature of the $\boldsymbol{\xi}$-field and ability of the $\delta\boldsymbol{N}$-field to change the characteristic type from hyperbolic to elliptic. The latter property not only explains the origin of force chains and provides an adequate description of the rheology of static granular media, but turned out to be instrumental for understanding of granular media thermodynamics. Our model should provide a basis for further grasping of granular media properties, in general.

Abstract:Although fully elastic when static, granular media become transiently elastic when being slowly sheared -- during which both the elastic energy and stress relax. Starting from this observation, we cogently derive the framework for granular hydrodynamics, a set of differential equations consistent with general principles of physics, especially reversible and irreversible thermodynamics. In addition, an expression for the granular elastic energy is reviewed and further discussed.

Abstract:A granular material is a conglomeration of discrete solid particles. It is intrinsically athermal because its dynamics always occur far from equilibrium. In highly excited gaseous states, it can safely be assumed that only binary interactions occur and a number of kinetic theories have been successfully applied. However, for granular flows and solid-like states, the theory is still poorly understood because of the internally correlated structures, such as particle clusters and force networks. The current theory is that the mesoscale characteristics define the key differences between granular materials and homogeneous solid materials. Widespread interest in granular materials has arisen among physicists, and significant progress has been made, especially in understanding the jamming phase diagram and the characteristics of the jammed phase. In this paper, the underlying physics of the mesoscale structure is discussed in detail. A multiscale framework is then proposed for dense granular materials.

Abstract:<p>Granular media, a macroscopic amorphous matter composed of mesoscopic discrete particles, exhibits different behaviour characteristics (e.g., solid-, liquid-, and gas-like phases) depending on the volume fraction and loading conditions. Therefore, it poses a significant challenge to three-phase modelling and analysis. In this study, a description of multiple phases in granular media is realised by establishing the transition criteria and parameter conversion relations between different phases, using the already established theories of the elastic-plastic constitutive relation in solid mechanics, the viscoplastic constitutive relation in rheology, and the kinetic theory of granular flow. The new model realises the coexistence of different phases and the conversions therebetween. Smoothed discrete particle hydrodynamics are introduced to discretise the new theoretical model, and the correspondence between the smoothed and actual particles for different phases and discrete formulas under different models are described in detail. Two typical cases are used for numerical tests: the collapse of one side of a three-dimensional granular column and the collapse and flow of a granular column on an inclined surface. The calculated morphology of granular flow, distributions of velocity vectors, scaling law of spreading range under different height-width ratios, and the transient characteristics of particle spreading all accord well with the experimental results. Furthermore, quasi-static, slow, fast, and other phases of particle motions are well captured. Thus, we verify the feasibility of the new model and method for the multiple-phase simulation of granular media.</p>

Abstract:Granular matter is a large assemblage of solid particles, which is fundamentally different from any other type of matters, such as solid and liquid. Most models presented for granular matter are phenomenological and are only suitable for solving engineering problems. Many fundamental mechanical problems remain open. By analyzing characteristics of internal state structure, we propose that granular matter is intrinsically multiscale, i.e. microscale of particle size, mesoscale of force chain, and macroscale of the bulk of granular matter. The correlations among difference scales would be crucial. The mesoscale force chain network is determined by both particle properties and macroscopic boundary conditions. The evolution of the force chain network contributes to macroscopic mechanical properties of granular matter. In addition, we discuss the drawbacks in simplifying contact forces in the current models, and the difficulties in analyzing the interaction of interstitial fluid in wet granular matter. As an appropriate application of granular matter, debris flow can be studied with granular matter mechanics; meanwhile, debris flow brings more challenges which certainly motivate future studies on granular matter.

Abstract:Granular flow is the shearing motion of a collection of discrete solid particles which are commonly seen and widely utilized in various industrial applications. One of the essential applications of dense slow granular flow in engineering is the pebble flow in pebble-bed nuclear reactor (PBR). A number of numerical models have been established for researching the basic physical mechanisms and properties of granular flow. For the purpose of generating an appropriate model for high temperature reactor-pebblebed modules (HTR-PM) in the future, numerical models on granular flow in hoppers and some of their previous applications on PBRs are reviewed. In this paper, basic transport and contact mechanisms of granular flow are firstly introduced, then kinetic theory from gas molecules and plastic theory from metal mechanics approaches give descriptions of the macroscopic behavior of rapid flow and quasistatic flow regimes, respectively, subsequently kinematic continuum method and discrete element method (DEM) are presented to describe the bulk features of dense slow flow in hoppers. Since various kinematic models, DEM models and their modified versions for dense slow granular flow in hoppers have been experimentally verified and applied in prediction of pebble flow in PBRs, a promising model for HTR-PM is expected with further work to generate pebble flow profile in the future.
The critical state of granular media: Convergence, stationarity, and disorder

Abstract:Discrete-element simulations are used to monitor several micro-scale characteristics within a granular material, demonstrating their convergence during loading toward the critical state, their stationarity at the critical state, and the evolution of their disorder toward the critical state. Convergence, stationarity and disorder are studied in the context of the Shannon entropy and two forms of Kullback-Leibler relative entropy. Probability distributions of 20 aspects of micro-scale configuration, force and movement are computed for three topological objects: particles, voids and contacts. The probability distributions of these aspects are determined at numerous stages during quasi-static biaxial compression and unloading. Not only do stress and density converge to the critical state, but convergence and stationarity are manifested in all of the micro-scale aspects. The statistical disorder (entropy) of micro-scale movements and strains generally increases during loading until the critical state is reached. When the loading direction is reversed, order is briefly restored, but continued loading induces greater disorder in movements and strains until the critical state is reached again.

Influence of roughness on the dynamical properties of granular gases

Abstract:The statistical-physical study of granular matter is essential to understand, from a fundamental point of view, the many different phenomena emerging in these classical many-body systems. Under rapid-flow conditions, granular materials exhibit a gas-like behavior, which can be described from the kinetic theory of gases. However, unlike molecular gases, a granular gas dissipates energy upon particle collisions, thus being completely out of equilibrium. Then, whereas the simplest model for a molecular gas consists in a collection of elastic hard spheres, a granular gas is simply described by inelastic hard spheres, which is usually improved by the consideration of surface roughness in the particles. Moreover, a granular gas can be found in free evolution, externally driven, or even immersed in an interstitial fluid. In this work, the description of the dynamics of granular gases has been carried out with the aim of identifying the specific properties emerging from the model by considering the surface roughness of granular particles. For that end, we have used the Boltzmann equation, adding in the driven and suspension cases a Fokker--Planck-like term. The main objectives of this thesis have been the theoretical description of the homogeneous states of the considered models, as well as the study of memory effects emerging from out-of-equilibrium states, and, finally, the transport properties and the appearance of instabilities in the hydrodynamic description of a granular gas of inelastic and rough particles. All these kinetic-theory analyses have been supplemented with computer simulations from Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics algorithms.

Abstract:A numerical study of gravity-driven monolayer granular flow in a contracted vertical silo is carried out using discrete element method. The bed dimension is 800×2000×12mm in wide, height, and depth directions, respectively, filled with 12,210 spherical granular particles of diameter of 12mm. The particles are loaded onto the bed from nine fixed points equally spaced at the top and discharged from a 120mm wide orifice at the bottom of the bed. By tracking particle trajectories and analyzing them via probability density function, a Gaussian-form dispersion of particles in the horizontal direction is shown. The results are validated by experimental observations. For mechanical analysis, an ideal but general geometrical model of particle dispersion is proposed. It explains the mechanism of Gaussian distribution and the feature of narrow band configuration of particle dispersion successfully. It improves the understanding of particle dispersion characteristics of gravity-driven slow particle flow, and provides a way to estimate the performance of particle-bed reactor.
Towards a better understanding of granular flows

Abstract:Understanding the transport of particles immersed in a carrier fluid (bedload transport) is still an exciting challenge. Among the different types of gas-solid flows, when the dynamics of solid particles is essentially dominated by collisions between them, kinetic theory can be considered as a reliable tool to derive continuum approaches from a fundamental point of view. In a recent paper, Chassagne et al. [J. Fluid Mech. 964, A27, (2023)] have proposed a two-fluid model based on modifications to a classical kinetic theory model. First, in contrast to the classical model, the model proposed by Chassagne et al. (2023) takes into account the interparticle friction not only in the radial distribution function but also through an effective restitution coefficient in the rate of dissipation term of granular temperature. As a second modification, at the top of the bed where the volume fraction is quite small, the model accounts for the saltation regime in the continuum framework. The theoretical results derived from the model agree with discrete simulations for moderate and high densities and they are also consistent with experiments. Thus, the model proposed by Chassagne et al. (2023) helps to a better understanding on the combined impact of friction and inelasticity on the macroscopic properties of granular flows.

Abstract:Granular flow is usually divided into three kinds of flow pattern, namely quasi static flow, slow flow, and rapid flow. The core issue of the research is the constitutive relation. A series of constitutive relations of application value have been received up to now, however, the study on principal theory is insufficient. Granular flow has an emergent mesoscopic structure, such as force chain network and vortex, involving complex irreversible processes. This paper studies its mesoscopic structure and principal characters, introduces the concept of two granular temperatures Tconf and Tkin of the granular flow to characterize the degree of chaotic motion and disordered configuration evolution, sets them as the non-equilibrium variables to constitute the thermodynamic state variables set for granular flow with the classical irreversible thermodynamic (CIT) variables, also determines the granular flow law of energy conversion and the entropy production rate, etc., and develops the two granular temperatures (TGT) model. Taking the simple shear quasi-static granular flow in a constant volume as example, and combining it with the discrete element method (DEM), this work confirms the material parameters needed for the TGT model, and analyzes the law of developing period and the effective coefficient of friction of steady period of granular flow. ? Abstract:The granular materials are composed of a collection of discrete and solid particles,such as coarse sands and debris accumulation.Using data from experiments or based on engineering experiences,numerous models are developed to describe certain mechanical phenomena of granular materials.However,our understandings of the mechanical properties of granular materials and their physical nature remain limited.The specific mechanical properties of granular materials come from complicated processes of the energy transportation,the disordered structure in the long-range and the ordered structure in the short-range.In this paper,some developments in measuring the inherent structural characteristics,the thermodynamics,and the transformation between solid and fluid states of granular materials are discussed.A new research approach is proposed to unify the thermodynamics and the structural analysis to have a better understanding of granular materials.

Abstract:Granular solid hydrodynamics (GSH) is a continuum-mechanical theory for granular media, the range of which is shown in this paper. Simple, frequently analytic solutions are related to classic observations at different shear rates, including: (i)~static stress distribution, clogging; (ii)~elasto-plastic motion: loading and unloading, approach to the critical state, angle of stability and repose; (iii)~rapid dense flow: the $\mu$-rheology, Bagnold scaling and the stress minimum; (iv)~elastic waves, compaction, wide and narrow shear band. Less conventional experiments have also been considered: shear jamming, creep flow, visco-elastic behavior and nonlocal fluidization. With all these phenomena ordered, related, explained and accounted for, though frequently qualitatively, we believe that GSH may be taken as a unifying framework, providing the appropriate macroscopic vocabulary and mindset that help one coming to terms with the breadth of granular physics.
