Abstract:Lithium-ion batteries have been the dominant choice for batteries for decades, however there are concerns related to the limited availability of lithium, which could potentially increase the cost and affect further implementation. As a promising alternative, sodium-ion batteries have attracted significant attention in recent years [1, 2]. The potential markets for sodium-ion batteries could range from devices where cycle life and cost are more prevailing factors than energy density, such as grid-scale energy storage for smart grid applications. A single-step, facile spray pyrolysis is being evaluated in this group for the synthesis of sodium-ion battery cathode materials. In the current study, Na 0.44 MnO 2 was selected due to its promising electrochemical performance, unique structure, and its similarity to transition metal oxides [3, 4]. Figure 1 shows the SEM image of Na 0.44 MnO 2 annealed at 800 oC. The material demonstrates a uniform, rod-like morphology. Figure 2 displays the XRD data of samples annealed at different temperatures for two hours. Na 0.44 MnO 2 has an orthorhombic lattice cell (pbam space group) and is isostructural with Na 4 Mn 4 Ti 5 O 18 . The sample annealed at 700 oC displays impurity peaks around the 30o 2θ. These impure phases may be related to the incomplete decomposition at this temperature. There are no additional phases observed in the 800 oC and 900 oC annealed samples. Figure 3 shows the first cycle voltage profile of the Na 0.44 MnO 2 (annealed at 800 oC) cell at C/10, where 1C equals to 120 mAg -1 . Abstract:A nanocrystalline lithium-rich cathode material (Li[Li0.26Ni0.11Mn0.63]O2) has been prepared by a molten salt method. By using KCl–NaCl as the reaction media, the synthetic temperature can be reduced to 700 °C. The prepared material was investigated using XRD, SEM and galvanostatic charge–discharge cycling, and shows highly crystallized shapes with average particle sizes of 50–100 nm. Due to its low dimensional, highly-crystalline and regularly shaped layered structure, the cathode material exhibits greatly improved capability and cycling performance when compared with the pristine cathode.

Abstract:The Na0.67Fe0.5Mn0.5−xMgxO2 compound with x = 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08, 0.1, 0.15 was synthesized by solid state reaction. The structure of the samples gradually transformed from P2 phase to O3 phase with the increase of Mg content. The hybrid P2/O3 phase transition metal oxides with high performance was prepared to promote the application of sodium-ion batteries. Na0.67Fe0.5Mn0.46Mg0.04O2 exhibited a hybrid P2/O3 phase structure, which showed high electrochemical performance. Due to the synergy of P2 and O3 phase, the conductivity for the migration of Na ions in the experimental cell, exhibited the highest ion diffusivity. Here, Fe and Mn-based transition metal oxide materials as a cathode material can have great application potential for sodium-ion batteries and can be one of the most promising alternatives to the limited lithium-ion battery.

Abstract:Sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) have been considered as potential candidates for stationary energy storage because of the low cost and wide availability of Na sources. O3‐type layered oxides have been considered as one of the most promising cathodes for SIBs. However, they commonly show inevitable complicated phase transitions and sluggish kinetics, incurring rapid capacity decline and poor rate capability. Here, a series of sodium‐sufficient O3‐type NaNi0.5Mn0.5‐ x Ti x O2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.5) cathodes for SIBs is reported and the mechanisms behind their excellent electrochemical performance are studied in comparison to those of their respective end‐members. The combined analysis of in situ X‐ray diffraction, ex situ X‐ray absorption spectroscopy, and scanning transmission electron microscopy for NaNi0.5Mn0.2Ti0.3O2 reveals that the O3‐type phase transforms reversibly into a P3‐type phase upon Na+ deintercalation/intercalation. The substitution of Ti for Mn enlarges interslab distance and could restrain the unfavorable and irreversible multiphase transformation in the high voltage regions that is usually observed in O3‐type NaNi0.5Mn0.5O2, resulting in improved Na cell performance. This integration of macroscale and atomicscale engineering strategy might open up the modulation of the chemical and physical properties in layered oxides and grasp new insight into the optimal design of high‐performance cathode materials for SIBs.

Abstract:Low-cost sodium ion batteries are of great significance in large-scale energy storage applications. With its high energy density and simple synthesis process, layered transition-metal oxides have become one of the most likely sodium ion battery cathode materials to replace lithium ion batteries in the energy storage market. Here, we report a prilling and MoS2 coating strategy to prepare the spherical cathode material. The spherical micronano particles shorten the diffusion path of Na+, restrain the complexity phase transitions, and enhance the tap density of the materials. In addition, the MoS2 coating improves the electrical conductivity of the material and the structural stability of the cathode material in air. The initial specific discharge capacity is 148.4 mA h g-1 at 0.1 C, which can be maintained at 128.9 mA h g-1 after exposure to air for 10 days. This method dramatically improves the energy density and structural stability of the cathode material, which provides a new scheme for preparing high-performance sodium ion batteries.

Abstract:In situ high energy X-ray diffraction (HEXRD) and in situ X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES) were carried out to understand the solid state synthesis of NaxMnO2, with particular interest on the synthesis of P2 type Na2/3MnO2. It was found that there were multi intermediate phases formed before NaMn02 appeared at about 600 degrees C. And the final product after cooling process is a combination of 0'3 NaMn02 with P2 Na2/3MnO2. A P2 type Na2/3MnO2 was synthesized at reduced temperature (600 degrees C). The influence of Na2CO3 impurity on the electrochemical performance of P2 Na2/3MnO2 was thoroughly investigated in our work. It was found that the content of Na2CO3 can be reduced by optimizing Na2CO3/ MnCO3 ratio during the solid state reaction or other post treatment such as washing with water. We expected our results could provide a good guide for future development of high performance cathode materials for sodium -ion batteries. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Tunnel-type Manganese-based oxide cathodes of sodium-ion batteries have attracted enormous attentions due to their advantages of low cost, good endurance to the ambient air and superior cycling stability. However, they still suffer from successive phase transitions and sluggish kinetics, which hampers their further practical applications. Herein, we introduce Cu 2+ and F — into the typical tunnel material Na 0.44 MnO 2 to improve the abovementioned shortages for the first time. As a result, the ultra-stable cycling performance (capacity retentions of 98.9% after 150 cycles at 120 mA/g and 98.0% after 200 cycles at 360 mA/g) and enhanced Na + diffusion rate can be achieved thanks to the synergistic effect of anion-cation co-doping. More importantly, with the aid of experiments and theoretical calculations, we unequivocally shed light on the role of Cu 2+ and F — , respectively. Besides, the underlying practical value of the optimal case is assessed in the full cell. This work provides a universal perspective for designing oxide cathodes with respectable performance, and paves a new way to promote the practical applications of SIBs.

Abstract:Transition metal oxides have been considered as one of the most promising cathode candidates for sodium ion batteries (SIBs). Tunnel type Na0.44MnO2, a typical cathode material for sodium ion battery, shows hopeful potential for future practical SIBs as large-scale electric energy storage system due to the low-cost and environment-friendly virtues. However, poor cyclability and rate performance of Na0.44MnO2 ascribed to the slow kinetic and structural degradation have limited its practical application. Herein, single crystalline hinged nanorod shaped Na0.44MnO2 (NMO-HNR) is designed by simple solid reaction. By testing the electrochemical performances of NMO-HNR samples which are synthesized at different annealing temperatures, the effects of grain size and crystallinity on electrochemical properties are investigated in detail. Thanks to the robust structure of hinged nanorod which is identified by structural and morphological characteristics after deep cycling, all the samples exhibit outstanding cyclability. Especially, the optimized NMO-HNR-900 material could deliver prominent capacity retention of 93.6% after cycling 1800 cycles at 2 A g−1. More importantly, the full battery performance based on Na0.44MnO2 cathode and MoS2 anode is first reported in this work. As a consequence, NMO-HNR-900//Co9S8@MoS2 HNT full-cell can deliver a decent cycling property with a capacity retention of 72.1% after 80 cycles.
Effects of Synthesis Conditions of Na0.44MnO2 Precursor on the Electrochemical Performance of Reduced Li2MnO3 Cathode Materials for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Li2MnO3 nanobelts have been synthesized via the molten salt method that used the Na0.44MnO2 nanobelts as both the manganese source and precursor template in LiNO3-LiCl eutectic molten salt. The electrochemical properties of Li2MnO3 reduced via a low-temperature reduction process as cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries have been measured and compared. Particularly investigated in this work are the effects of the synthesis conditions, such as reaction temperature, molten salt contents, and reaction time on the morphology and particle size of the synthesized Na0.44MnO2 precursor. Through repeated synthesis characterizations of the Na0.44MnO2 precursor, and comparing the electrochemical properties of the reduced Li2MnO3 nanobelts, the optimum conditions for the best electrochemical performance of the reduced Li2MnO3 are determined to be a molten salt reaction temperature of 850 °C and a molten salt amount of 25 g. When charge-discharged at 0.1 C (1 C = 200 mAh g-1) with a voltage window between 2.0 and 4.8 V, the reduced Li2MnO3 synthesized with reaction temperature of Na0.44MnO2 precursor at 850 °C and molten salt amounts of 25 g exhibits the best rate performance and cycling performance. This work develops a new strategy to prepare manganese-based cathode materials with special morphology.
P2-type transition metal oxides for high performance Na-ion battery cathodes

Abstract:The particle pulverization induced by volume change and the disproportionation reaction of Mn3+ to Mn4+ and electrolyte-soluble Mn2+ are two major challenges for Na0.67MnO2 cathodes in Na-ion batteries. Herein, Ni and/or Fe doped Na0.67MnO2 was synthesized to suppress the particle pulverization and disproportionation reaction. The replacement of 33% Mn ions by Ni in Na0.67MnO2 can effectively reduce the particle pulverization and disproportionation of Mn3+, resulting in improved cycling stability at the cost of reduced capacity. To develop a high capacity and long cycle life cathode material, Ni in Na0.67Ni0.33Mn0.67O2 is further partially substituted by Fe to generate Na0.67Fe0.20Ni0.15Mn0.65O2, which retains similar to 70% of its initial capacity after 900 cycles, corresponding to a very low capacity decay rate of 0.033% per cycle. To the best of our knowledge, the Na0.67Fe0.20Ni0.15Mn0.65O2 synthesized by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP) represents one of the best cathode materials for Na-ion batteries to date. In addition, a thin layer (5 nm) of Al2O3 is deposited on the Na0.67MnO2 electrode by atomic layer deposition (ALD) to further reduce the dissolution of Mn ions and accommodate the volume change, which further extend the cycling stability of Na0.67MnO2 electrodes.

Abstract:Manganese-based layered oxides are currently of significant interest as cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries due to their low toxicity and high specific capacity. However, the practical applications are impeded by sluggish intrinsic Na+ migration and poor structure stability as a result of Jahn-Teller distortion and complicated phase transition. In this study, a high-entropy strategy is proposed to enhance the high-voltage capacity and cycling stability. The designed P2-Na0.67Mn0.6Cu0.08Ni0.09Fe0.18Ti0.05O2 achieves a deeply desodiation and delivers charging capacity of 158.1 mA h g-1 corresponding to 0.61 Na with a high initial Coulombic efficiency of 98.2%. The charge compensation is attributed to the cationic and anionic redox reactions conjunctively. Moreover, the crystal structure is effectively stabilized, leading to a slight variation of lattice parameters. This research carries implications for the expedited development of low-cost, high-energy-density cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries.

Abstract:As one of the most promising sodium-ion cathodes, O3-type transition metal layered oxides (NaxTMO2) with high specific capacity and low cost have received intensive attention. However, they still face the issues of slow Na+ transfer kinetics and undesirable phase transitions. In this study, we report a novel Al and Cu dual substitution strategy to prepare a NaNi1/3Fe1/3Mn1/3O2 cathode using a spray drying method. Specifically, Al serves to stabilize the TM-O layer structure, mitigating adverse phase transitions, while Cu contributes additional capacity and enhances air stability. Consequently, the NaNi0.32Fe0.32Mn0.32Al0.02Cu0.02O2 cathode exhibits enlarged Na+ transfer channels, modulated particle morphology and strengthened layer framework. With the enhanced structure, the John-Teller distortion, adverse phase transitions of O'3 and OP2, and intragranular fatigue cracks are effectively suppressed, leading to improved cycle and air stability. The NaNi0.32Fe0.32Mn0.32Al0.02Cu0.02O2 cathode can maintain 81% of its initial specific capacity at 1C rate after 200 cycles and can obtain a specific capacity of 113 mAh/g even at 5C rate. Furthermore, we find that strengthened Na+ transport kinetics promote homogenous Na+ distribution, which can reduce the formation of unstable interphases to achieve more reversible phase transition. This work helps to better unveil the relationship between Na+ transfer kinetics and phase transition, provides new insight for designing high-performance sodium-ion cathodes.

Abstract:We demonstrate that a series of high-performance cathode materials, sodium vanadium polyanionic compounds, Na3(VO1-xPO4)2F1+2x (x = 0, 0.5 and 1), can be synthesized by a phase-transfer assisted solvo-thermal strategy at a rather low temperature (80-140 °C) in one simple step, exhibiting a high Na storage capacity of ca. 120 mA h g(-1) and excellent cycling performance. This study makes a significant step to extend this strategy to the synthesis of functional materials from simple binary to complex multicomponent compounds.

Abstract:Mg‐substituted Na3Ni2−xMgxSbO6 cathode materials are synthesized via a scalable high‐temperature solid‐state method to improve the cyclability of the honeycomb‐layered oxide cathode in sodium‐ion batteries. Abstract:In this investigation, a lithium-free cathode material, Na 0.7 MnO 2.05 –Na 0.91 MnO 2 , was synthesized by the solid phase method. The design of the heterostructure is favourable for improving the lithium ion storage of NMO600, which can deliver a discharge capacity of 83.12 mA h g −1 at 1 A g −1 and keep 61.71 mA h g −1 after 700 cycles.

Abstract:Nanostructure lithium rich manganese based cathode materials are successfully synthesized and treated by post molten salt treatment method to optimize their electrochemical performance. The molten salt treatment process has a great influence on the microstructure, cycle performance, rate capacity and high temperature electrochemical performance of the resulted cathode materials Li1+x(Ni0.15Co0.15Mn0.70)O2.275+x/2 (0.6 <= x <= 0.9). The sample after 4 hours of molten salt treatment displayed the highest crystallinity, best cycling performance and rate capacity. Li-1.6(Ni0.15Co0.15Mn0.70)O-2.575 cathode materials treated in LiCl molten salt at 750 degrees C for 4 hours displayed 218.8 mAhg(-1) discharge capacity after 40 cycles in voltage range 2.5 similar to 4.8 V at 25 degrees C, which is 36.2% higher than pristine sample. The capacity retention for Li-1.6(Ni0.15Co0.15Mn0.70)O-2.575 cathode is also improved by the molten salt treatment process, which is 6.6% higher than the pristine sample.
