Abstract:O3-Type layered oxides are widely studied as cathodes for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to their high theoretical capacities. However, their rate capability and durability are limited by tortuous Na+ diffusion channels and complicated phase evolution during Na+ extraction/insertion. Here we report our findings in unravelling the mechanism for dramatically enhancing the stability and rate capability of O3-NaNi0.5Mn0.5-xSbxO2 (NaNMS) by substitutional Sb doping, which can alter the coordination environment and chemical bonds of the transition metal (TM) ions in the structure, resulting in a more stable structure with wider Na+ transport channels. Furthermore, NaNMS nanoparticles are obtained by surface energy regulation during grain growth. The synergistic effect of Sb doping and nanostructuring greatly reduces the ionic migration energy barrier while increasing the reversibility of the structural evolution during repeated Na+ extraction/insertion. An optimized NaNMS-1 electrode delivers a reversible capacity of 212.3 mAh g-1 at 0.2 C and 74.5 mAh g-1 at 50 C with minimal capacity loss after 100 cycles at a low temperature of -20 °C. Such electrochemical performance is superior to most of the reported layered oxide cathodes used in rechargeable SIBs.

Abstract:A novel Na-deficient O-3-type layered material Na0.83Cr1/3Fe1/3Mn1/6Ti1/6O2 has been synthesized via solid-state reaction and utilized as a cathode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). It delivers initial charge/discharge capacities of 168.5 and 161.4 mAh g(-1) within the voltage range of 1.5-4.1 V at current rate of 0.1C. A phase transition pathway of O3 -> O3 '' O3 -> O3 '' is revealed during the initial charge process by ex situ X-ray diffraction. In addition, synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy suggests that the charge compensation of Na0.83Cr1/3Fe1/3Mn1/6Ti1/6O2 during the initial charge and discharge processes is contributed by Cr3+/Cr4.3+, Fe3+/Fe3+-4+ and Mn3+-4+/Mn4+ redox couples. The local electronic structure of layered Na1-xCr1/3Fe1/3Mn1/3-xTixO2 (x = 0, 1/6, 1/3) is proved to have a great impact on the electrochemical performance. After coating carbon layer with similar to 10 nm, Na0.83Cr1/3Fe1/3Mn1/6Ti1/6O2 C exhibits the improved electrochemical performances regarding capacity retention and rate capability. Trace Ti/Mg Co-Doped O3-type Layered Oxide Cathodes with Enhanced Kinetics and Stability for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:O3-type layered oxide cathodes are identified as a promising cathode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to their high specific capacity and moderate operating voltage, yet it usually suffers from sluggish Na-ion diffusion and structure instability. Herein, we demonstrate the synthesis of a trace Ti/Mg co-doped NaNi1/ 3Fe1/3Mn1/3O2 (TiMg-NFM) cathode, in which Ti-ion is distributed in transition metal layers and Mg-ion is doped into sodium layers. The co-doping can enlarge the Na-layer spacing inside the layered structure to reduce Na-ion diffusion barrier. Meanwhile, the structural stability is effectively reinforced via the stronger Ti-O bond and the pillar effect of Mg-ions, further reducing surface side reaction with electrolyte. These merits endow a high reversible capacity of the TiMg-NFM cathode with 144.5 mAh g-1 at 0.1C, and much higher capacity retention of 111.4 mAh g-1 at 5C versus the pristine NFM (62.1 mAh g-1). More impressively, 80.1% of initial capacity can be maintained after 300 cycles at 2C. This work presents a feasible strategy to enhance the reaction kinetics and structure stability for developing advanced O3-type layered oxide cathodes.
Ti‐Substituted NaNi0.5Mn0.5‐xTixO2 Cathodes with Reversible O3−P3 Phase Transition for High‐Performance Sodium‐Ion Batteries

Abstract:Sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) have been considered as potential candidates for stationary energy storage because of the low cost and wide availability of Na sources. O3‐type layered oxides have been considered as one of the most promising cathodes for SIBs. However, they commonly show inevitable complicated phase transitions and sluggish kinetics, incurring rapid capacity decline and poor rate capability. Here, a series of sodium‐sufficient O3‐type NaNi0.5Mn0.5‐ x Ti x O2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.5) cathodes for SIBs is reported and the mechanisms behind their excellent electrochemical performance are studied in comparison to those of their respective end‐members. The combined analysis of in situ X‐ray diffraction, ex situ X‐ray absorption spectroscopy, and scanning transmission electron microscopy for NaNi0.5Mn0.2Ti0.3O2 reveals that the O3‐type phase transforms reversibly into a P3‐type phase upon Na+ deintercalation/intercalation. The substitution of Ti for Mn enlarges interslab distance and could restrain the unfavorable and irreversible multiphase transformation in the high voltage regions that is usually observed in O3‐type NaNi0.5Mn0.5O2, resulting in improved Na cell performance. This integration of macroscale and atomicscale engineering strategy might open up the modulation of the chemical and physical properties in layered oxides and grasp new insight into the optimal design of high‐performance cathode materials for SIBs.
Design of Cu-Substituted O3-Type NaFe0.5 Mn0.5 O2 Cathode Materials for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:O3-type Fe/Mn-based layered oxide cathode materials with abundant reserves have a promising prospect in sodium-ion batteries. However, the electrochemical reversibility of most O3-type Fe/Mn-based oxide cathode materials is still not high enough. Herein, the effect of different Cu contents on the electrochemical properties of O3-NaFe0.50 Mn0.50 O2 materials is systematically investigated. The as-prepared NaFe0.30 Mn0.50 Cu0.20 O2 cathode achieves the synergistic optimization of the interface and bulk phase. It shows superior electrochemical performance, with an initial discharge specific capacity of 114 mAh g-1 at 0.1 C, a capacity retention rate of 94 % after 100 cycles at 0.5 C, and excellent chemical stability in air and water. In addition, the sodium ion full battery based on NaFe0.30 Mn0.50 Cu0.20 O2 cathode and hard carbon anode has a capacity retention rate of 81 % after 100 cycles. This research provides a useful approach for the preparation of low-cost and high-performance O3-type layered cathode materials.

Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are being viewed as a prime alternative to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their resource availability, cost-effectiveness, safety, and superior power performance. Layered transition metal oxide cathode materials, in particular, have garnered interest for their high theoretical capacity and extended cycle life. This study focuses on the O3-type Na0.90Cu0.22Fe0.30Mn0.48O2(NCFMO), synthesized using the polyvinylpyrrolidone combustion method, showcasing notable specific capacity and capacity retention of over 80% after 200 cycles at 1C. Hard carbon has been identified as a potential candidate for commercialization among various anode materials, due to its high reversible capacity and stable structure. We assembled and evaluated a coin SIB full cell comprised of an NCFMO cathode and hard carbon anode (HC), which demonstrated optimal electrochemical performance at a positive-to-negative capacity ratio of 0.9. The study also explored the influence of the electrolyte on electrochemical performance, with NaClO4 (0.1 M NaClO4 in PC = 100 Vol% with 2.0%FEC) found to deliver the best results. Further, we assessed the heat generation characteristics of the NCFMO/HC full cell, revealing higher total heat generation during charging compared to discharging. This comprehensive study contributes significantly to the ongoing efforts towards commercialization of SIBs.

Abstract:Layer oxides are representative materials for sodium-ion battery (SIB) cathodes. However, the commonly used single-phase layer oxide cathodes have poor solid solubility of Na+ and cycling stability, limiting their practical application. In this work, a unique P2/O3 biphasic cathode material, NaFe1–x Co x O2 (x = 1/3, 1/2, and 2/3), is obtained by Fe/Co bimetallic metal–organic framework (MOF). The introduction of Co enriches the redox reaction and converts the O3 phase to the P2 phase. At the same time, the construction of the biphasic heterojunction is beneficial to increase Na+ diffusion, inhibit the irreversible phase transition, buffer the lattice stress, and enhance structural stability. Hence, NaFe1/3Co2/3O2 exhibits a high specific capacity of 199.6 mAh g–1 at 0.2 C due to the synergistic effect of P2 and O3 phases. Furthermore, the capacity remains 98.7 mAh g–1 after 150 cycles at 1 C, with no significant degradation. This strategy for constructing a composite phase provides insight into the design of cathode materials with long lifespan and high capacity for SIBs.

Abstract:The O3-type cathode of NaNi 0.4 Fe 0.2 Mn 0.4 O 2 stands out for its remarkable theoretical capacity, straightforward production process, affordability, and ecological compatibility for sodium-ion batteries. Nonetheless, the cycle stability of the cathode material is suboptimal. The slippage of the transition metal layers during the charging and discharging process leads to structural instability, and the elevated charging voltages (notably around 4.2V) initiate the oxygen redox activities, leading to a sustained loss of oxygen ions and irreversible structural degradation. This work pioneers the utilization of a co-substitution strategy with titanium and antimony, fostering a high-entropy configuration of a new O3-type layered oxide cathode of NaNi 0.35 Fe 0.2 Mn 0.3 Ti 0.1 Sb 0.05 O 2 . It meticulously examines the potential effects of Ti 4+ and Sb 5+ substitution on the electrochemical performance of the cathode, including the role of the high-entropy configuration in modulating the phase transitions throughout the charging and discharging processes. Importantly, the designed cathode of NaNi 0.35 Fe 0.2 Mn 0.3 Ti 0.1 Sb 0.05 O 2 showcased superior discharge-specific capacity (183.3 mAh·g −1 at 0.1C in the voltage range of 1.9-4.1 V), improved cycle stability (with a capacity retention of 76.0% after 200 cycles at 1C), robust rate capability (76.3 mAh·g −1 at 10C) and exceptional high-voltage resilience (213 mAh·g −1 at 0.1C and capacity retention of 74.0% after 100 cycles at 1C in the voltage range of 1.7-4.3 V). This work articulates a strategic approach for the deliberate design of entropy-regulated cathode materials, aiming at the enhancement of the high voltage stability of cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Sodium ion batteries (SIBs) have attracted great interest as candidates in stationary energy storage systems relying on low cost, high abundance and outstanding electrochemical properties. The foremost challenge in advanced NIBs lies in developing high-performance and low-cost electrode materials. To accelerate the commercialization of sodium ion batteries, various types of materials are being developed to meet the increasing energy demand. O3-type layered oxide cathode materials show great potential for commercial applications due to their high reversible capacity, moderate operating voltage and easy synthesis, while allowing direct matching of the negative electrode to assemble a full battery. Here, representative progress for Ni/Fe/Mn based O3-type cathode materials have been summarized, and existing problems, challenges and solutions are presented. In addition, the effects of irreversible phase transitions, air stability, structural distortion and ion migration on electrochemical performance are systematically discussed. We hope to provide new design ideas or solutions to advance the commercialization of sodium ion batteries.
Regulating Phase Transition and Oxygen Redox to Achieve Stable High‐Voltage O3‐Type Cathode Materials for Sodium‐Ion Batteries

Abstract:The O3‐type cathode materials always deliver an unsatisfying cyclic performance for the sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs), especially with a high cut‐off voltage. The new configuration in this research exhibits much‐enhanced structure stability and practical application possibility via regulating the phase transition and oxygen redox at 4.2 V. O3‐type layered oxides are promising cathode materials for sodium‐ion batteries. However, unsatisfying cyclic stability hinders its practical application, mainly resulting from harmful phase transition and irreversible oxygen redox, especially in high‐voltage regions. Herein, a co‐doped strategy by incorporating Li+, Mg2+, Ca2+, and Sb5+ into the O3‐Na0.8Ni0.4Fe0.2Mn0.4O2 cathode materials is proposed. Both suppressing the undesired phase transition over 4.1 V (vs Na/Na+) and reducing the anisotropic strain are achieved with the novel Na0.8Ni0.3Fe0.2Mn0.3Li0.1Mg0.02Ca0.05Sb0.03O2 (LMCS NFM). Moreover, restricted but highly reversible oxygen redox is observed due to strong attraction from Sb5+ and special "Li–O‐vacancy" and "Mg–O‐vacancy" configurations. The strategy brings about excellent high‐voltage cyclic stability with a reversible capacity of 130 mAh g−1 and a capacity retention of 85% after 250 cycles at 4.2 V, and less thermal runaway risk and moisture sensitivity, increasing the probability of O3‐type oxide cathode practical applications.

A Novel P2/O3 Composite Cathode Toward Synergistic Electrochemical Optimization for Sodium Ion Batteries

Abstract:The P2-type and O3-type are the most common types of layered oxides. The P2-type is possessed with better air stability but lower capacity while the O3-type possesses higher capacity but poorer kinetic performance. Considering the complementarity of two phases, a series of P2/O3-Na0.80Li0.13Ni0.20FexMn0.67-xO2 (x = 0.05, 0.10, 0.15) are designed and successfully synthesized by Fe doping in this work. The consolidation of P2 and O3 structures in this layered oxide is clearly characterized by the X-ray diffraction (XRD) refinement. Surprisingly, the two-phase collaboration is well demonstrated in the superior electrochemical properties. When x = 0.15, Fe0.15-LNM reveals a high reversible capacity with 180.95 mAh.g(-1) and when x = 0.10, Fe0.10-LNM presents a good capacity retention with 88.60% after 100 cycles. Here it is the O3-P3 reversible phase transition and the redox of Fe that mainly provide the capacity during sodium ion de-embedding. Of note, the residual sodium salt on the surface is greatly reduced in the two-phase, which cuts down the occurrence of side reactions and improves the efficiency. This novel composite phase strategy facilitates the design of promising cathode materials with high capacity and long lifetime for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) and other alkali metal batteries.

Abstract:The performance of sodium-ion batteries critically depends on the cathode materials used, making it essential to explore and optimize suitable candidates. Among them, O3-structured NaNi0.33Fe0.33Mn0.33O2 has emerged as one of the most promising cathode materials due to its outstanding electrochemical properties. However, there still exists a knowledge gap regarding the detailed synthesis conditions and the comprehensive performance of the full cell using this material. In this study, we investigated the influence of synthesis temperature, time, and sodium content on the electrochemical performance and charge-discharge kinetics of O3-structured NaNi0.33Fe0.33Mn0.33O2, prepared via the PVP-gel combustion method. Through systematic analysis, we elucidated the impact of these synthesis parameters on the material's properties and battery performance. The results revealed that the optimized conditions led to a cathode material with superior electrochemical performance, exhibiting enhanced capacity with 139 mAh/g at 0.1C and 96 mAh/g at 10C. Additionally, a full cell using the optimized cathode material was studied, showing promising performance. This research sheds light on the significance of synthesis parameters in tailoring the electrochemical properties of O3-structured NaNi0.33Fe0.33Mn0.33O2 for sodium-ion batteries. The insights gained from this study hold valuable implications for the further development of practical sodium-ion battery cathode materials.

A Novel Ni-rich O3-Na[Ni0.60Fe0.25Mn0.15]O2 Cathode for Na-ion Batteries

Abstract:O3-type layered oxide materials are being considered as one of the most promising cathodes for Na-ion batteries owing to their higher capacity, however, they usually suffer from structural damage at the highly desodiated state. To achieve the stable/high-capacity O3-type Na-ion cathodes, a series of Ni-rich O3–Na[NixFeyMn1-x-y]O2 (x = 0.6, 0.7 and 0.8) oxide cathodes were successfully prepared and the phase transitions at high voltage were systematically investigated. Combined with the electrochemical measurements and structural characterizations, the structural transitions from O3 to O′3, P3, O3″ phases during the Na+ (de)intercalation process were demonstrated in the voltage range of 2.0–4.2 V. Moreover, several reasons for the high-voltage capacity decay are revealed: 1) the thermodynamic instability of high-voltage phase due to less Na+ in the crystal structure; 2) large volume change during the high-voltage phase evolution with inferior Na+ diffusion kinetics; 3) formation of microcracks and cathode-electrolyte interphase on the surface of cathode particles. To address the above issues, a reasonable upper cut-off voltage of 4.0 V was set to prevent the formation of O3″ phase and reduce electrolyte decomposition, which leads to a high reversible capacity of ~152 mAh g−1 (~467 Wh kg−1) with a superior capacity retention of ~84% after 200 cycles at 0.5C, showing great Na storage performance. This work provides insights on the relationship of the structure-property for the further development of high-performance Ni-rich O3-type Na-ion cathodes.

Synthesis and Electrochemical Investigation of O3-Type High-nickel NCM Cathodes for Sodium-ion Batteries

Abstract:Sodium ion batteries(SIBs) are promising energy storage devices for smart grid applications due to their low cost and the high abundance of sodium, but few cathode materials of SIBs with high energy density are available for practical applications. Herein, a series of NaNCM ternary materials(NCM=nickel-cobalt-manganese) is obtained by solid- phase reaction with well-regulated temperature and other reaction conditions. XRD results show that impure NiO phase is more likely to occur under high nickel content. The cross-section SEM indicates that the primary particles in the electrode materials are radially distributed along the radial direction, and the internal porous structure is conducive to the infiltration of electrolyte. The initial specific capacities of Na[Ni0.68Co0.10Mn0.22]O2 (NaNCM712), Na[Ni0.6Co0.2Mn0.2]O2 (NaNCM622) and Na[Ni0.4Co0.3Mn0.3]O2(NaNCM433) at 0.2 C are 165.5, 153.1 and 146.8 mA·h/g, and the corresponding capacity retention rates are 63.2%, 78.5% and 71.7% after 100 cycles. NaNCM712 possesses the highest initial specific capacity, and NaNCM433 delivers the best rate capability. The rate capabilities of high-nickel and low-cobalt NaNCM cathodes need to be further improved. Moreover, ex-situ XRD pattern reveals the structure evolution (from O3 type to P2 type) during a long cycling charge and discharge process.
O3-Type Na 2/3 Ni 1/3 Ti 2/3 O 2 Layered Oxide as a Stable and High-Rate Anode Material for Sodium Storage

Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are currently the most promising candidates for large-scale energy storage devices owing to their low cost and abundant resources. Titanium-based layered oxides have attracted widespread attention as promising anode materials due to delivering a safe potential of about 0.7 V (vs Na+/Na) and a small volume contraction during cycles; P2-type Ti-based layered oxides are typically reported, due to the challenging synthesis of the O3-type counterpart resulting from the high percentage of unstable Ti3+. Herein, we report an anomalous O3-Na2/3Ni1/3Ti2/3O2 layered oxide as an ultrastable and high-rate anode material for SIBs. The anode material delivers a reversible capacity of 112 mA h g-1 after 300 cycles at 0.1 C, a good capacity retention rate of 91% after 1400 cycles at 2 C, and, in particular, a capacity of 52 mA h g-1 even at a high rate of 20 C (1780 mA g-1). Furthermore, the in situ X-ray diffraction monitoring reveals no phase transitions and almost zero strain both underlie the good long-cycle stability. The measured high apparent Na+ diffusion coefficient (2.06 × 10-10 cm2 s-1) and the low migration energy barrier (0.59 eV) from density functional theory calculations are responsible for the superior rate capability. Our results promise advanced high-performance O3-type Ti-based layered oxides as promising anode materials toward application for SIBs.

O3-Type Layered Ni-Rich Oxide: A High-Capacity and Superior-Rate Cathode for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Inspired by its high-active and open layered framework for fast Li+ extraction/insertion reactions, layered Ni-rich oxide is proposed as an outstanding Na-intercalated cathode for high-performance sodium-ion batteries. An O3-type Na0.75Ni0.82Co0.12Mn0.06O2 is achieved through a facile electrochemical ion-exchange strategy in which Li+ ions are first extracted from the LiNi0.82Co0.12Mn0.06O2 cathode and Na+ ions are then inserted into a layered oxide framework. Furthermore, the reaction mechanism of layered Ni-rich oxide during Na+ extraction/insertion is investigated in detail by combining ex situ X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electron energy loss spectroscopy. As an excellent cathode for Na-ion batteries, O3-type Na0.75Ni0.82Co0.12Mn0.06O2 delivers a high reversible capacity of 171 mAh g(-1) and a remarkably stable discharge voltage of 2.8 V during long-term cycling. In addition, the fast Na+ transport in the cathode enables high rate capability with 89 mAh g(-1) at 9 C. The as-prepared Ni-rich oxide cathode is expected to significantly break through the limited performance of current sodium-ion batteries.

Abstract:As the representative layered oxide cathode for sodium ion batteries (SIBs) featuring the low cost, P2-type Na-Fe-Mn oxide (NFMO) delivers a high capacity but a limited cycling stability, while O3-type NFMO shows extended cycling lifespan but a lower capacity. Considering the complementarity of two phases in electrochemistry, we successfully designed and fabricated a Fe/Mn-based layered oxide Na0.67Li0.11Fe0.36Mn0.36Ti0.17O2 with a unique P2/O3 biphasic architecture through high-proportion Li/Ti co-substitution. High-proportion Li substitution in transition metal layers triggers the reversible O redox below 4.2 V due to the formation of the special O bonding environment, delivering a highest capacity of 235 mA h g1 ever reported among all Fe- and Mn-based layered oxide cathodes. Moreover, the unique intersected complex way at the phase boundary significantly suppressed the P2→OP4 phase transition and decreased the lattice mismatch between two phases at high potentials, greatly enhancing the cycling stability. This novel phase complex strategy benefits the design of promising cathode materials with high capacity and long lifespan for SIBs and beyond.

Abstract:Over recent decades, rapid advancements in energy technology have transformed human life. Lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) have played a pivotal role nevertheless concerns about limited lithium resources and price fluctuations underscore the need for sustainability. Sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs), operating on principles akin to LIBs, have emerged as promising candidates for rechargeable batteries in the next generation of energy storage systems, primarily due to their cost‐effectiveness and sustainable attributes. Analogous to LIBs, the cathode in SIBs assumes a critical role in dictating the electrochemical performance of the battery. Therefore, the research and development of cathode materials for SIBs take on paramount significance. O3‐type SIB cathodes, inspired by the successful O3‐type LIB cathodes (e.g., LiCoO2 and NMC variants), hold promise for commercial applications. This comprehensive overview offers an in‐depth exploration of various unary‐metal oxide cathode materials characterized by an O3‐layered structure. Subsequently, nickel (Ni), manganese (Mn), and Ni/Mn‐based O3 cathode materials are conducted a comprehensive study, assessing the effects of element substitution and doping on capacity, phase transitions, and cycle life. In light of the current challenges, advancing SIB cathode materials of future directions will propose, addressing key considerations in the pursuit of enhanced performance and sustainable energy storage solutions.

Abstract:An engaging area of research in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) has been focusing on discovery, design, and synthesis of high-capacity cathode materials in order to boost energy density to levels close enough to that of state-of-the-art lithium-ion batteries. Of particular interest, P2-type layered oxide, Na2/3Fe1/2Mn1/2O2, has been researched as a potential cathode in SIBs based on its high theoretical capacity of 260 mA h/g and use of noncritical materials. However, the reported synthesis methods are not only complex and energy-demanding but also often yield inhomogeneous and impure materials with capacities less than 200 mA h/g under impractical test conditions. Here, we report a novel synthesis route using low-temperature eutectic reaction to produce highly homogeneous, crystalline, and impurity-free P2-NaxFe1/2Mn1/2O2 with enhanced Na-ion diffusivity and kinetics. The overall electrochemical performances of the Na-ion cells have been improved by pairing the P2-cathode with presodiated hard carbon anodes, leading to reversible capacities in the range of 180 mA h/g. This new approach is a contribution toward the simplification of synthesis and scalability of sodium-based cathodes with high crystallinity and fine-tuned morphology and the realization of a sodium-ion battery system with lower cost and improved electrochemical performance.
Realizing long-term cycling stability of O3-type layered oxide cathodes for sodium-ion batteries

Abstract:O3-type layered oxide cathodes are promising for practical sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) owing to their high theoretical capacity, facile synthesis, and sufficient Na + storage. However, they face challenges such as rapid capacity loss and poor cycling stability, mainly attributed to irreversible phase transitions. To address these challenges, a novel cathode material, Li/Sn co-substituted O3-Na 0.95 Li 0.07 Sn 0.01 Ni 0.22 Fe 0.2 Mn 0.5 O 2 (LSNFM), has been designed by regulating the electronic structure, in which Li + activates more redox reactions of Ni 2+/3+ and Fe 3+/4+ above 2.5 V and suppresses the redox reactivity of Mn 3+/4+ below 2.5 V, while Sn 4+ can prevent the charge delocalization in the transition metal layer, contributing to structural stability. Due to this synergistic effect, the as-prepared LSNFM electrode with high structural reversibility displays a 27.2% capacity increase contributed by the high-voltage transition metal ion redox activity and exhibits excellent long-term cycling stability, an 84.0% capacity retention after 500 cycles at 1 C and an 84.7% capacity retention after 2000 cycles at 5 C. The fundamental mechanism is fully investigated using systematic in situ / ex situ characterization techniques and density functional theory computations. This work provides a paradigm for designing long-term cycle life cathode materials by synergistically regulating the electronic structure in practical SIBs.
