Abstract:Plasma treatment and coating surfactant are two common hydrophilic modification methods for polymers. Polycarbonate is widely used for fabricating micro/nano devices such as microfluidic chips due to its low cost, good transparency and biocompatibility. Polycarbonate(PC) was used as the application object, and the ageing effects of these two methods were compared and analyzed. Experiments found that the contact angle of deionized water on the PC surface was decreased from the initial 88° to 28° and 9°, respectively, when the PC surface was treated with oxygen plasma and coated with surfactant Tween-20 respectively, and the hydrophilicity of the PC surface was greatly improved by both methods. However, these two modification methods exhibited different ageing effects. The modification effect by oxygen plasma treatment decayed rapidly with time, and the contact angle of deionized water on the PC surface was restored to 81° on day 15 after the modification. On the contrary, the modification effect by coating Tween-20 did not change significantly over time, and the contact angle still remained at about10° on day 15 after the modification. Finally, the ageing effects of these two methods were further demonstrated by the siphon valve on a microfluidic chip.
