Abstract:Laser spectroscopy based techniques have the advantages of high sensitivities, high selectivities, non-invasiveness and in situ, real-time observations. They are widely used in numerous fields, such as environmental monitoring, life science, medical diagnostics, manned space flight, and planetary exploration. Owing to the merits of low cost, compact volume and strong environment adaptability, quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) based sensing is an important laser spectroscopy-based method of detecting the trace gas, which was invented in 2002. Detection sensitivity is a key parameter for gas sensors because it determines their real applications. In this paper, focusing on the detection sensitivity, the common methods for QEPAS are summarized. High power laser including amplified diode laser by erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA), and quantum cascade laser are used to improve the excitation intensity of acoustic wave. The absorption line of gas molecules located at the fundamental bands of mid-infrared region is adopted to increase the laser absorption strength. Micro-resonator is employed to enhance the generated acoustic pressure by forming a standing wave cavity. Quartz tuning forks (QTFs) with low resonant frequency are used to increase the accumulation time of acoustic energy in itself. Multi-pass strategy is utilized to amplify the action length between laser beam and target gas in the prongs of QTF. The advantages and disadvantages of the above methods are discussed respectively. For the issues in real applications, the all-fiber strucure in near-infared region and mid-infrared region and miniaturization using three-dimensional(3D) printing technique for QEPAS sensor are summarized. A QEPAS technique based multi-gas sensor is used to quantify the concentration of carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), hydrogen cyanide (HCN), and hydrogen chloride (HCl) for post-fire cleanup aboard spacecraft, which is taken for example for the real application.Finally, the methods of further improving the sensitivity of QEPAS sensor are proposed.

Abstract:The ubiquitous trend toward miniaturized sensing systems demands novel concepts for compact and versatile spectroscopic tools. Conventional optical sensing setups include a light source, an analyte interaction region, and a separate external detector. We present a compact sensor providing room-temperature operation of monolithic surface-active lasers and detectors integrated on the same chip. The differentiation between emitter and detector is eliminated, which enables mutual commutation. Proof-of-principle gas measurements with a limit of detection below 400 ppm are demonstrated. This concept enables a crucial miniaturization of sensing devices.

Abstract:Based on the principle that the position and intensity of Michelson interference fringes change due to different optical path lengths in different gases, a new system is designed, which applies two interferometers, one is used for test and the other is used as reference. The problems of low precision and bad reliability existing in detecting gas concentration are solved. In this system UNIQ UM201 Charge Coupled Device and Matrox Meteor-II image grab card are used to acquire the interference fringes and the images of the obtained fringes are processed in the LabVIEW environment. As the surroundings change faintly, the images will also change, and this test scheme has high sensitivity and fast response.

Abstract:We propose the use of wavelength-dependent spectroscopic absorption in the evanescent field of ultra-compact whispering gallery mode microspherical lasers as selective gas sensors and estimate few ppm detection sensitivity using a simple model. We also propose a sensor configuration based on integrated multi-channel microspherical laser arrays capable of selective gas detection at low concentration, and demonstrate that a compact 14channel device could generate a unique and distinguishable power distribution over channel outputs upon exposure to three different gases.

Abstract:Remote or standoff detection of greenhouse gases, air pollutants, and biological agents with innovative ultrafast laser technology attracts growing interests in recent years. Hybrid femtosecond/picosecond coherent Raman spectroscopy is considered as one of the most versatile techniques due to its great advantages in terms of detection sensitivity and chemical specificity. However, the simultaneous requirement for the femtosecond pump and the picosecond probe increases the complexity of optical system. Herein, we demonstrate that air lasing naturally created inside a filament can serve as an ideal light source to probe Raman coherence excited by the femtosecond pump, producing coherent Raman signal with molecular vibrational signatures. The combination of pulse self-compression effect and air lasing action during filamentation improves Raman excitation efficiency and greatly simplifies the experimental setup. The air-lasing-assisted Raman spectroscopy was applied to quantitatively detect greenhouse gases mixed in air, and it was found that the minimum detectable concentrations of CO 2 and SF 6 can reach 0.1% and 0.03%, respectively. The ingenious designs, especially the optimization of pump-seed delay and the choice of perpendicular polarization, ensure a high detection sensitivity and signal stability. Moreover, it is demonstrated that this method can be used for simultaneously measuring CO 2 and SF 6 gases and distinguishing 12 CO 2 and 13 CO 2 . The developed scheme provides a new route for high-sensitivity standoff detection and combustion diagnosis.

Abstract:Gas detection plays an important role in many fields, such as atmospheric environment monitoring, biological monitoring, gas leakage monitoring, gas decomposition products detection, and so on. Nowadays, there are many kinds of gas sensors. Compared with normal gas sensors, optical sensors have the advantages of antielectromagnetic interference, high sensitivity, and compact size. Especially in certain extreme conditions, such as in aerospace applications and oil exploration application, optical fiber sensors are more attractive. This article presents a critical review on fiber loop ring-down spectroscopy (FLRDS), which can be used for quantitative detection of concentrations of trace gases. Fiber cavity is the core component of FLRDS system. The principles, loss characteristics, and application ranges of different types of fiber cavities are discussed. This article brings a variety of FLRDS techniques and introduces the basis for each technique, recent developments in methods, and performance limitations in detail. Finally, the existing technical barriers and future prospects of the FLRDS system for gas sensing are presented.
Laser-Induced Periodic Surface Structures and Their Application for Gas Sensing

Abstract:Semiconducting metal oxides are widely used for solar cells, photo-catalysis, bio-active materials and gas sensors. Besides the material properties of the semiconductor being used, the specific surface topology of the sensors determines device performance. This study presents different approaches for increasing the sensing area of semiconducting metal oxide gas sensors. Micro- and nanopatterned laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSSs) are generated on silicon, Si/SiO2 and glass substrates. The surface morphologies of the fabricated samples are examined by FE SEM. We selected the nanostructuring and characterization of nanostructured source Ni/Au and Ti/Au films prepared on glass using laser ablation as the most suitable of the investigated approaches. Surface structures produced on glass by backside ablation provide 100 nm features with a high surface area; they are also transparent and have high resistivity. The value of the hydrogen sensitivity in the range concentrations from 100 to 500 ppm was recorded using transmittance measurements to be twice as great for the nanostructured target TiO2/Au as compared to the NiO/Au. It was found that such transparent materials present additional possibilities for producing optical gas sensors.
In Situ All-Fiber Remote Gas Sensing Strategy Based on Anti-Resonant Hollow-Core Fiber and Middle-Hole Eccentric-Core Fiber

Abstract:Laser absorption spectroscopy for gas sensing basically employs an air pump located at the gas cell probe to draw in ambient gases, and the on-site gas sample is subsequently delivered for laboratory non-real-time analysis. In this study, an in situ all-fiber remote gas sensing strategy is proposed. The anti-resonant hollow-core fiber (AR-HCF) is used as the sensing fiber, and a 20 m middle-hole eccentric-core fiber (MH-ECF) is used as the conducting fiber. The remote ambient gases can be inhaled into the AR-HCF as a result of the negative pressure transmitted through the MH-ECF when pumping gas at the interface of the MH-ECF. Since the real-time monitoring of greenhouse gas emissions in industrial processes holds immense significance in addressing global climate change, the detection of CO2 is achieved with the TDLAS-WMS method, and the gas sensing performance of an all-fiber remote gas sensing structure (RGS) is experimentally validated. The response time t90 under the pumping condition is about 456 s, which is about 30 times faster than that of free diffusion. Allan deviation results for more than one hour of continuous monitoring indicate that the lowest detection limit for the all-fiber RGS is 0.0373% when the integration time is 184 s. The all-fiber remote gas sensing strategy also possesses the benefits of being applicable to multiplex, hazardous gas environment passive monitoring.

Abstract:Gas sensor technology is widely utilized in various areas ranging from home security, environment and air pollution, to industrial production. It also hold great promise in non-invasive exhaled breath detection and an essential device in future internet of things. The past decade has witnessed giant advance in both fundamental research and industrial development of gas sensors, yet current efforts are being explored to achieve better selectivity, higher sensitivity and lower power consumption. The sensing layer in gas sensors have attracted dominant attention in the past research. In addition to the conventional metal oxide semiconductors, emerging nanocomposites and graphene-like two-dimensional materials also have drawn considerable research interest. This inspires us to organize this comprehensive 2020 gas sensing materials roadmap to discuss the current status, state-of-the-art progress, and present and future challenges in various materials that is potentially useful for gas sensors.
Remote Multipoint Fiber Optic Gas Sensors Using an Fmcw Technique and A Tunable Laser

Abstract:The cost per sensing point may be reduced by networking a number of gas sensors that shares the same tunable laser and/or the same signal processing electronics. In this paper we report on the use of a frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) technique for addressing the remote optical fiber gas sensor arrays. The sensor network is of a ladder topology and is interrogated by a tunable external-cavity semiconductor lasers. The system performance in terms of detection sensitivity and crosstalk between sensors is investigated. By using appropriate wavelength modulation/scanning coupled with low pass filtering, the coherent interferometric noise can be reduced greatly. Computer simulation shows that an array of 20 acetylene (C2H2) gas sensors with 2000ppm (2.5cm gas cell, or 50ppm.m) detection sensitivity for each sensor may be realized. A two-sensor acetylene gas detection system is experimentally demonstrated with detection sensitivity of 165ppm/root Hz (2.5cm gas cell or 4ppm.m/root Hz) and crosstalk of -25dB.

Abstract:Abstract Laser spectroscopy outperforms electrochemical and semiconductor gas sensors in selectivity and environmental survivability. However, the performance of the state-of-the-art laser sensors is still insufficient for many high precision applications. Here, we report mode-phase-difference photothermal spectroscopy with a dual-mode anti-resonant hollow-core optical fiber and demonstrate all-fiber gas (acetylene) detection down to ppt (parts-per-trillion) and <1% instability over a period of 3 hours. An anti-resonant hollow-core fiber could be designed to transmit light signals over a broad wavelength range from visible to infrared, covering molecular absorption lines of many important gases. This would enable multi-component gas detection with a single sensing element and pave the way for ultra-precision gas sensing for medical, environmental and industrial applications.

Abstract:Abstract Development of novel mid-infrared (MIR) lasers could ultimately boost emerging detection technologies towards innovative spectroscopic and imaging solutions. Photoacoustic (PA) modality has been heralded for years as one of the most powerful detection tools enabling high signal-to-noise ratio analysis. Here, we demonstrate a novel, compact and sensitive MIR-PA system for carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) monitoring at its strongest absorption band by combining a gas-filled fiber laser and PA technology. Specifically, the PA signals were excited by a custom-made hydrogen (H 2 ) based MIR Raman fiber laser source with a pulse energy of ⁓ 18 μJ, quantum efficiency of ⁓ 80% and peak power of ⁓ 3.9 kW. A CO 2 detection limit of 605 ppbv was attained from the Allan deviation. This work constitutes an alternative method for advanced high-sensitivity gas detection.

Abstract:Photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) as a highly sensitive and selective trace gas detection technique has extremely broad application in many fields. However, the laser sources currently used in PAS limit the sensing performance. Compared to diode laser and quantum cascade laser, the solid-state laser has the merits of high optical power, excellent beam quality, and wide tuning range. Here we present a long-wave, high-power, wide-tunable, single-longitudinal-mode solid-state laser used as light source in a PAS sensor for trace gas detection. The self-built solid-state laser had an emission wavelength of ~2 μm with Tm:YAP crystal as the gain material, with an excellent wavelength and optical power stability as well as a high beam quality. The wide wavelength tuning range of 9.44 nm covers the absorption spectra of water and ammonia, with a maximum optical power of ~130 mW, allowing dual gas detection with a single laser source. The solid-state laser was used as light source in three different photoacoustic detection techniques: standard PAS with microphone, and external- and intra-cavity quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS), proving that solid-state laser is an attractive excitation source in photoacoustic spectroscopy.

Abstract:Gas sensing research experiences a worldwide revival with the emergence of novel materials increasing opportunities for applications. Here, this study reviews: 1) the sensing layers analyzing recent trends toward nanostructured, low‐dimensional, and composite materials; and 2) the latest achievements and targets in terms of applications, from environmental monitoring to food aroma identification and quality control up to volatilomics and the healthcare sector. Gas sensing research experiences a worldwide revival in the last years. From one side, the emergence of novel sensing materials enables unprecedented capacities for improving the device performances. From the other, the increasing opportunities for applications impacting current societal priorities highly motivate further studies. Here, this field is reviewed with special attention to the emerging approaches and the most recent breakthroughs, challenges, and perspectives. Abstract:Surface acoustic wave (SAW) technology has been extensively used in communications and sensing applications. For SAW based gas sensing applications, the sensitive material or sensing layer which is coated onto the SAW sensor is vital for its sensitivity, selectivity, limit of detection, and repeatability, as changes of sensing signals (including frequency, amplitude, and phase angle) are strongly linked to variations of mass loading, electrical conductivity and elastic modulus (or elastic loading) of this sensing layer. There have been rapid developments in this field recently but great challenges still remain in the choices of suitable sensing materials, structures and mechanisms of these sensing layers. This paper reviews recent advances of micro- and nanostructured sensing materials and their selection, their sensing mechanisms and designs towards enhancing the gas sensing performance of SAW devices. We first discuss different sensing mechanisms based on SAW principles, along with the key sensing influencing parameters. We then highlight and categorize recently reported gas sensing materials into semiconductor metal oxides, carbon-based materials and polymers. We further focus the discussion on the relationships among the micro/nanostructures, compositions, and structure-sensing performance of the SAW based sensors. Finally, we highlight key challenges and potential solutions as well as future directions of sensing materials for SAW based gas sensors.

Abstract:The field of gas sensors has been developing for the last year due to the necessity of characterizing compounds and, in particular, volatile organic compounds whose detection can be of special interest in a vast range of applications that extend from clinical evaluation to environmental monitoring. Among all the potential techniques to develop sensors, magnetron sputtering has emerged as one of the most suitable methodologies for the production of large-scale uniform coatings, with high packing density and strong adhesion to the substrate at relatively low substrate temperatures. Furthermore, it presents elevated deposition rates, allows the growth of thin films with high purity, permits a precise control of film thickness, enables the simple manufacturing of sensors with low power consumption and, consequently, low costs involved in the production. This work reviewed all the current applications of gas sensors developed through magnetron sputtering in the field of VOCs assessment by gathering the most relevant scientific works published. A total of 10 compounds were considered for this work. Additionally, 13 other compounds were identified as promising targets and classified as future trends in this field. Overall, this work summarizes the state-of-the-art in the field of gas sensors developed by magnetron sputtering technology, allowing the scientific community to take a step forward in this field and explore new research areas.
