Abstract:This paper discribes test results of an industrial demonstration plant using ash agglomeration fluid bed for gasification of pulverized coal.Use of the fluidization technology in the presence of oxygen steam mixture as a promotor in the engineering that deals well with establishment of fluid bed,dedusting and slag discharge at elevated temperatures,application of high temperature resistant valves and abrasion resistant refractories,and recovery of waste heat.Compared with fixed bed gasification process,the cost per tone of ammonia can be reduced by 172 Yuan,resulting in better economic and environmental benefits.
Sustainable Preparation of High-Calorific Value and Low-N and S Energy Products Through the Low-Temperature Alkali Fusion of Coal Gasification Fine Ash

Abstract:Coal gasification fine ash (CGFA) is characterized by high yield, high carbon content, and difficult recovery. This results in waste of coal resources and serious environmental pollution. To address this issue, a novel green deashing process is proposed in this study to modify CGFA into deashed carbon (DAC) with a high calorific value and an ash content of less than 5% through a low-temperature alkaline fusion process. Compared with traditional alkaline fusion (which is carried out at 600-1000 degrees C), low-temperature alkaline fusion treatment can efficiently remove ash minerals in the temperature range of 300-450 degrees C, which is beneficial to the efficient recovery of residual carbon in DA, while simultaneously improving the physicochemical properties and energy characteristics of DAC, thereby improving its combustion performance. At an alkali fusion temperature of 350 degrees C, a NaOH: DA ratio of 4.5:1, and a reaction time of 40 min, the resulting DAC product had ash content of 2.28%, combustible material recovery (CMR) of 82.03%, higher heating value (HHV) of 31.07 MJ kg- 1, and SBET of 445.43 m2 g-1. In comparison, it was found that low-temperature alkali fusion significantly improved the deashing of CGFA when compared to existing deashing technologies. These results strongly suggest that this innovative deashing method can modify CGFA into a high-calorific value and low-N and S fuel, thereby providing a cost-effective and sustainable utilization method for CGFA.
Effects of Flotation and Acid Treatment on Unburned Carbon Recovery from Atmospheric Circulating Fluidized Bed Coal Gasification Fine Ash and Application Evaluation of Residual Carbon.

Abstract:The high carbon content (20-60%) in coal gasification fine ash (CGFA) makes CGFA unable to be directly used in the building materials and ceramic industries, and can only be dissipated in landfills, which brings serious environmental safety problems. This paper uses physical (flotation method) and chemical (multi-stage pickling method) methods to treat CGFA, analyze the separated carbon, and evaluate its application. The carbon content of the filter cake ash (FCA) residual carbon recovered by the flotation method is slightly increased, and the carbon ash separation effect for the water-containing CGFA is poor. The carbon content of dry ash (DA) recovered carbon in acid treatment increased from 16.33% to 89.97%. The specific surface area of the acid-washed recovered carbon is 6-34 times that of the original sample, and the specific surface area of dry ash-HCl/HF/HCl (DA-CFC) is as high as 425.31 m(2)/g, and its pore structure network is more developed than before deashing. After pickling treatment, the microcrystalline structure changes, the carbon skeleton becomes looser, the degree of crosslinking decreases, and the reaction activity increases. The relative content of C-C in the acid-washed recovered carbon increased by 6.4-46.3%, and the relative content of functional group C-H bonds increased by 48.5-89.5%. Compared with the activation energy of the original sample, the activation energy E of the sample after flotation and acid treatment is reduced, and the reaction activity is enhanced. Flotation and pickling methods can improve the grade of fuel, and multi-stage pickling methods to obtain high specific surface area carbon can be used as a precursor for the preparation of activated carbon. Carbon-ash separation of DA by flotation method can be applied to fuel combustion, fine chemical industry, and road filling. However, for FCA, it is necessary to use a pickling scheme for carbon-ash separation to realize resource utilization and harmlessness.
Investigation on Co-Combustion of Coal Gasification Fine Ash and Raw Coal Blends: Thermal Conversion, Gas Pollutant Emission, and Kinetic Analyses

Abstract:Coal gasification fine ash (CGFA) is produced in huge quantities, has high carbon content and fine particle characteristics, and is environmentally polluting and energy wasting. Co-combustion of CGFA and raw coal (RC) is a way to recover CGFA energy. The aim of this work is to investigate the effects of thermal conversion, synergistic behaviour, kinetics, thermodynamics and gas release behaviour (especially of polluting gases) during the co-combustion of CGFA in air atmosphere. The results showed that the addition of RC to CGFA reduced the activation energy of the mixture and improved the combustion performance and combustion stability of CGFA, and the combustion performance of the mixture with 30% CGFA was comparable to that of Yangquan anthracite. A significant synergistic interaction between CGFA and RC occurred during the co-combustion process, and this interaction inhibited the formation of gaseous pollutants, especially reducing the formation of gaseous emissions (NH3, NO, NO2 and SO2). Average activation energy was described using four iso-conversion and integral master plots methods. The co-combustion for CGFA and RC were best described by the reaction order and random nucleation mechanisms. Our results contribute to developing the new strategies of energy with the CGFA combustion.
Utilization of Coal gasification fine ash for construction material: From physical and chemical properties to the hydration activity of thermally modified CGFA

Abstract:Coal gasification technology is the core of clean and efficient utilization of coal, while coal gasification fine ash (CGFA) is the solid waste inevitably produced in the coal gasification process. Due to the high residual carbon content and water retention of CGFA, the solubility of its silica-aluminium-calcium-containing minerals is poor, which affects its potential cementing properties in construction materials. In this paper, the basic physicochemical properties were investigated, and it was found that small particles of CGFA (CGFA-S) had more active mineral components, lower residual carbon content (17.17%) and weaker water retention (6.91%), which facilitated the removal of impurities and water. In addition, the best effects were achieved at a heat treatment temperature of 650 °C, which exposed the minerals and increased the solution solubility, and the leaching concentrations of Si 4+ , Al 3+ , and Ca 2+ increased by 21.2%, 44.6%, and 97.8%, respectively. However, when the temperature was too high (815 °C), the minerals recrystallized, leading to structural instability and dissolution difficulties, and the concentrations of the three major ions were reduced by 84.4%, 82.0%, and 42.2%, respectively, compared with the control.Finally, the optimal heat treatment temperature was 650 °C, with the highest exothermic hydration rate (11.92 mW/g) and the highest cumulative exothermic heat (199.81 J/g). The hydration products were tightly bound, and the cement mortar specimens had the highest compressive strength, with a 28d strength of 45.4 MPa.

Abstract:Coal gasification fine ash (CGFA) has the characteristics of high carbon content, fine-grained, and sizeable annual output, causing environmental pollution and energy waste. Oxygen-enriched combustion is an effective way to solve the CGFA problem. This paper used thermogravimetric to study the effect of thermal conversion, kinetic analysis, and empirical optimization on the combustion process of CGFA in oxygen-enriched atmosphere. The results show that oxygen-enriched combustion of raw coal and CGFA improve ignition, burnout performance, combustion stability, and reduced activation energy. As the O2 concentration increased from 30 % to 70 %, the activation energy of CGFA increased, but the improvement in combustion performance was not significant. A two-factor analysis of variance was carried out using a generalized linear model to obtain the effects of oxygen concentration, heating rate, and temperature variations on the combustion properties of CGFA, showing that atmosphere, heating rate and temperature variations all had significant effects on the combustion performance of CGFA, but atmosphere and heating rate had a more substantial impact on the combustion performance of CGFA. The combustion performance of raw coal under 30 %O2/70 %Ar atmosphere was better than that of CGFA, and the oxygen-enriched combustion (30 %O2/70 %Ar) performance of CGFA was comparable to that of CGFA blended with 60 % bituminous coal in air atmosphere. A kinetic model was developed to describe the oxygen -enriched combustion process (R2 > 0.92). The oxygen-enriched conditions of CGFA allow for efficient and clean combustion.

Abstract:China generates substantial quantities of gasified fine ash (GFA) annually through entrained flow bed coal gasification processes. These GFAs are laden with significant amounts of poorly reactive carbon and abundant ash resources, including silica, aluminum. Typically GFA represent not only a gross squandering of resources but also a potential source of environmental contamination. In order to use both ash and carbon of GFA, our team has developed the thermal modification -melting combustion method. The study conducted thermal modification-melting combustion experiments of GFA with auxiliary heating fuel and varying moisture content on a pilot-scale experimental platform. The aim was to ascertain the influence of operating conditions on the physical and chemical properties of GFA fuel, as well as the carbon conversion rate of GFA and the potential for reusing ash after melting combustion in the entire system. The results indicate that an increase in the moisture content of GFA allows the thermally modified fine ash (MFA) to possess smaller particle sizes and more reactive sites in carbon structures, along with higher combustible gas yield and calorific value. Post-melting combustion, the residual carbon conversion rate in GFA surpassed 96.88 %, indicative of a high recovery potential. Moreover, the ash slag, rich in inorganic non-metallic glassy phases, emerged as a promising candidate for material reuse and application.

Abstract:Gasified fine ash (GFA) exhibits poor reactivity due to its low carbon content and high ash content, which restricts its potential for combustion utilization. To enhance the reactivity of GFA, we employed a circulating fluidized bed (CFB) as a thermal modification unit (TMU) to thermally modify GFA from different entrained-flow gasifiers. We also experimentally investigated the impact of equivalence ratio, temperature, and feedstock moisture content on the thermal modification of GFA. After thermal modification of GFA, the pore structure of modified fine ash (MFA) was significantly improved, the proportion of active sites in residual carbon increased, and the proportion of graphitized structures decreased. An appropriate increment in the equivalence ratio increased the number of carbon active sites in MFA. A good thermal modification effect was found on the GFA produced by different types of gasification furnaces. The temperature rise promoted gasification reaction in the TMU and restricted carbon conversion, thus decreasing the consumption of combustible residual carbon. An increase of water content in the GFA improved the pore structure, but excessive water caused adverse effects.

Abstract:Due to the high carbon and ash content of coal gasification fine ash (CGFA) produced by circulating fluidised bed gasifiers, it is mainly dissipated in landfills, resulting in soil and water pollution and energy wastage. The presence of carbon limits the application of CGFA in building materials and ceramics. Large-scale dissipation of CGFA can be achieved if the carbon in CGFA has active oxidation properties and potential as a material for the preparation of carbon. Therefore, exploring the form of carbon present in CGFA is crucial for the resourceful and harmless use of CGFA. Demineralisation of different types of CGFA from a circulating fluidised bed gasifier with a gas production capacity of 40,000 Nm(3)/h was carried out to obtain demineralised carbon (DC) and to investigate the structure and reactivity of the DC. The d(002) and L-c values of the DC increased, the cross-linkage decreased, the main microcrystalline structural parameters of the aromatic carbon network layer with swelling effect increased in the vertical direction, the aromatic carbon and aliphatic hydrocarbon functional groups increased and the oxygen-containing functional groups all tended to decrease to different degrees. Based on the changes of CGFA chemical structure before and after acid treatment, a CGFA chemical structure model was constructed. Through TG experiments and Raman analysis of the samples, the activation energy value of the DC carbon was less than 70 kJ/mol, and the relationship between the carbon structure and combustion reactivity of the Raman characterisation was constructed. The DC had a specific surface area above 350 m(2)/g and was prepared as activated carbon after KOH and high temperature activation. The activated carbon had a specific surface area of 1636.2211 m(2)/g, a pore volume of 1.6796 cm(3)/g and a density of 1 g/cm(3). The above indicates that CGFA has the potential to be used as a fuel for combustion, secondary gasification and DC can be used as an adsorbent or a pressed precursors for activated carbon.

Abstract:The test and study of the coal ash fusion characteristics was conducted with the thermal analysis and three coal ashes from Liujiaqu, Wenjialiang and Xinzhuang. The fusion characteristics and differential of the different coal ash fusion characteristics can be well explained with the thermal analysis curves. The fundamental cause of the differential was the differential of the coal ash mineral contents. Comparisons on coal ash thermal analysis curves influenced oxygen atmosphere, inert gas atmosphere and different temperature increasing were made in the paper.

Abstract:The pore and chemical structure characteristics of the raw coal and the coal gasification fly ash (CGFA) in an atmospheric pressure circulating fluidized bed gasifier with a gas production capacity of 20000 and 40000 Nm3 h-1 were studied. The results indicated the presence of developed pore structure and high carbon content of the CGFA. The comprehensive fractal dimension method was proposed to analyze the pore structure of the pore section. The comprehensive fractal dimension was found to be > 2.6. The surface of CGFA is rough and porous. When compared to raw coal, the relative content of the CGFA carbon functional group is lower than 20%, and that of aliphatic carbon gets reduced. The interlamellar spacing (0.3489 nm, 0.3501 nm) of the A-filter cake ash (FCAA), A-dry ash (DAA), B-filter cake ash (FCAB), and B-dry ash (DAB) carbon is higher than that of the standard graphite (0.3354 nm), lean coal (0.3468 nm), and anthracite (0.344 nm). Moreover, the carbon structure is loose. The comprehensive results of physical and chemical structure revealed that CGFA showed a good chemical reaction activity and also the value of secondary combustion and gasification as fuel. This study exhibits significance and importance in the field of waste valorization towards a circular economy.
Combustibility and Cofiring of Coal Gasification Fine Ash with High Carbon Content in a Full-scale Pulverized Coal Furnace

Abstract:Coal gasification fine ash (CGFA) having a high carbon content is produced in large quantity as a byproduct from coal gasifiers in China. CGFA is usually disposed of by landfill as a solid waste, which is not only detrimental to environment but also a loss of an enormous energy that renders the process inefficient. Therefore, it is crucial to make use of the high carbon content in the CGFA with an economic and environmentally friendly method. In this study, the ignition and burnout behavior of CGFA were investigated via a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), flat-flame burner (FFB), and drop-tube furnace (DTF). Further, the cofiring of CGFA was numerically studied in a tangentially fired pulverized coal boiler burning anthracite with various cofiring ratios (0%, 10%, 20%, and 30%). The TGA results show the similar oxidation reactivity, oxidation kinetics, and ignition behavior of CGFA with the anthracite. In the FFB atmosphere with practical heating rates, the CGFA and anthracite are both heterogeneously ignited with an ignition time of 8.1 and 7.6 ms, respectively. The particle size significantly affected the ignition time of CGFA, as the particle size decreased from 125 to 135 μm to 45–63 μm and the ignition time of CGFA decreased from 10.1 to 5.6 ms. The burnout test in DTF indicates that the promising burnout performance in a pulverized coal furnace required a crucial oxygen concentration >10%, and the CFD simulation results coincided well with the experimental data from DTF. The CFD modeling results of the full-scale furnace show that the cofiring of CGFA is feasible in the pulverized coal furnace burning anthracite. Compared with the mode of pure anthracite combustion, under the cofiring mode with 10–30% CGFA as the energy input, the central maximum temperature of the main combustion zone increases by 50–90 °C, resulting in the slightly improved burnout for both anthracite and CGFA.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Disposal of gasification fine ash (GFA), a by-product of coal gasification, is still dominated by stockpiles, increasing land and environmental problems. To explore ways to reduce and reuse GFA through combustion, our research team used the circulating fluidized bed to modify the less reactive GFA through preheating and achieved the secondary use of GFA under high-oxygen and high-temperature reaction conditions. Through this experiment, we explored the effects of equivalent ratio and oxygen concentration in a melt furnace on carbon conversion and ash characteristics. The increase of oxygen concentration in the melt furnace unit benefited decarbonization of the preheated GFA. The increased oxygen concentration in the melting furnace unit was not conducive to the generation of mineral phase structures and pore structures in the products. The mineral phase structures and elemental contents of the coarse slag, fine slag and fly ash produced by the melt furnace unit differed. Reduction of the equivalent ratio did not significantly affect the morphology of the coarse slag products. However, the morphology of the fine slag and fly ash changed more significantly. Moreover, the carbon conversion capacity decreased significantly along with the drop of equivalent ratio and the change of the reaction atmosphere.

Efficient decarburization modification of coal gasification fine ash by microwave field activation

Abstract:The presence of residual carbon in coal gasification fine ash (CGFA) significantly impacts its subsequent processing and utilization. This paper proposes and investigates the use of microwave field heating to decarburize CGFA, exploiting its favorable microwave absorbing characteristics attributed to its composite structure comprising carbon, iron, and water. The experimental results demonstrate an 81% reduction in the required time and a 74% decrease in energy consumption (based on preliminary calculations) to achieve a decarburization rate of 95% compared to conventional thermal electric furnace calcination methods. The treated CGFA exhibits optimized mineral species, reduced electron binding energy, enhanced solubility, and increased heat release intensity during hydration, leading to improved reactivity of mineral phases in alkaline environments. Furthermore, when used as supplementary cementitious material, the activity index of CGFA shows a remarkable 21% increase in macroscopic performance testing.

Abstract:In our study, it is found that the ignition and burnout performance of the carbon‐rich fraction are enhanced with the addition of corn straw char. Due to the different mixing ratios, the mineral composition of the bottom ash shows different changes. It can be observed that the ash sample with 40% mixing carbon‐rich fraction proportion presents the most obvious agglomeration phenomenon. Besides, the bottom ash is rich in silicon, which can be extracted and reused. Moreover, the heavy metal contents in the bottom ash all meet the Chinese Standard of Soil Environmental Quality Risk Control Standard. The results obtained from this paper aim to guide the large‐scale treatment of coal gasification fine slag in the Ningdong region, China. Additionally, the study could make a practical reference for the potential of coal gasification fine slag as energy recovery. Summary In this paper, the co‐combustion characteristics of the carbon‐rich fraction from coal gasification fine slag and corn straw char were investigated. The combustion performance of the blend was studied by TGA, and the properties of bottom ash samples were evaluated by XRD, SEM‐EDS, and ICP‐MS. The results showed that the addition of corn straw char (CC) to carbon‐rich fraction (RC) can improve the combustibility of RC. The kinetic reaction mechanisms of the blend combustion were described by the diffusion model and chemical reaction order model (D1 and O3). The 40%RC case was recommended because of the lowest reaction activation energy. Hematite (Fe2O3), quartz (SiO2), anhydrite (CaSO4), and diopside (Ca(Mg, Al)(Si, Al)2O6) were the main mineral compounds in the RC‐CC ash. With different compounding ratios of RC‐CC, significant variability was observed in the degree of denseness and aggregation on the surface of the blend combustion bottom ash. The heavy metal concentrations (V, Cr, Ni, As, Cd and Pb) in the ash were tested to be in accordance with Chinese soil environmental quality standards, and the co‐combustion process had a positive impact on the enrichment of V, Cr, and Ni in the bottom ash to some extent. The results obtained can make a reference for the synergistic utilization of RC‐CC, and the treatment and reuse of combustion bottom ash samples.

Abstract:Fine slag (FS), which is a by-product from coal gasification, is composed of inorganic miner-als and residual carbon. Acid treatment has high efficiency to separate the residual carbon in FS but the changes of properties of FS treated by acid remain unclear. To have a deep under-standing of effects of acid treatment on physicochemical properties and gasification activity of FS, FS was subjected to different acid treatment, and then were characterized using Nitrogen adsorption technique, Raman spectroscopy and thermo-gravimetric analyzer. The results showed that the combined treatment with hydrochloric acid and hydrofluoric acid can remove the almost all mineral matters. Acid treatments did not modify the continuous and complete pores structure of FS. While, hydrochloric acid has a major influence on carbon structure, which produces the highest carbon actives and amorphous carbon. Nitric acid has positive influence on carbon structure transformation to crystalline structure. Notably, the gasification time can be shortened by the reduction of ash content. The carbon active sites in samples governed the initial reactivity while at the late stage of gasification the amount of inorganic elements controlled the gasification rate. Abstract:Coal ash is a byproduct of coal gasification processes, which shows great reusing potential in construction, adsorption, extraction of alumina and other areas. The flow characteristics of fine ash have a significant effect on reusing processes. However, ashes produced by different gasification technologies have different physical properties. Therefore, research on flow characteristics of fine ash is useful. In this work, fine ashes obtained from coal-water slurry gasification and different pulverized coal gasification were selected as experimental materials. The flow properties of fine ashes produced by different gasification processes were compared in terms of cohesion, difference of internal friction angle between steady-state (φst) and initial flow (φi) and specific energy (SE). In addition, effects of fine particle mean size and fine particle content on the flow properties were obtained. The results show that compared to the fine ash from coal-water slurry gasification, the cohesion of pulverized coal gasification fine ash is stronger with worse flowability. The fine ash from pulverized coal gasification experienced quench process has weaker flowability than that experienced waste heat boiler process.

Abstract:Coal gasification fine slag (CGFS) is a large solid waste in the field of coal chemical industry, and its land occupation and environmental pollution caused by stockpiling and landfill make its comprehensive utilization imminent. The composition and structure of CGFS is the basis of its resource utilization, particle size classification and density classification is the important means to achieve the separation and enrichment of components in CGFS, while there are significant differences in the properties of CGFS in different particle size and different density fractions. Therefore, a CGFS sample from Shaanxi, China was used as an example in this paper, and X-ray diffraction analyzer (XRD), X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and low-temperature N 2 adsorption tester were applied to comprehensively analyze the compositional and structural properties of the raw as well as the graded (both size-graded and density-graded) samples. The results show that the proximate composition, mineral composition, elemental composition, surface functional groups, apparent morphology, and pore structure show a good regularity with the particle size and density of the samples. Meanwhile, these properties and their variations with particle size and density were analyzed for their implication in the separation of components and resource utilizations of CGFS. The findings of this study provide ideas and data support for large-scale dissipation and high value-added disposal of CGFS.
