Abstract:Recently, advances in machine learning and neural network technology have allowed artificial intelligence (AI) to further promote guidance of clinical diagnosis, treatment and resource expenditures. In genitourinary cancers, AI has made huge progress in improving the diagnosis and treatment of prostate, kidney and bladder cancers. Numerous studies have developed methods to utilize neural networks to automate prognostic prediction, treatment plan optimization and patient follow-up education. Obviously, AI guidance could markedly reduce the subjectivity of diagnosis and treatment management of genitourinary cancers. However, although the application of AI in cancer treatment has become a research hotspot in modern technology, there still exist obvious limitations of AI management when compared with real-world clinical strategies. Therefore, this article summarized the current advantages and disadvantages of AI to provide novel insights for the future application of AI in the precision, personalized diagnosis and treatment, and long-term management of both patients and urologists.

Abstract:Diagnosis and treatment of urological tumors, relying on auxiliary data such as medical imaging, while incorporating individual patient characteristics into treatment selection, has long been a key challenge in clinical medicine. Traditionally, clinicians used extensive experience for decision-making, but recent artificial intelligence (AI) advancements offer new solutions. Machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL), notably convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in medical image recognition, enable precise tumor diagnosis and treatment. These technologies analyze complex medical image patterns, improving accuracy and efficiency. AI systems, by learning from vast datasets, reveal hidden features, offering reliable diagnostics and personalized treatment plans. Early detection is crucial for tumors like renal cell carcinoma (RCC), bladder cancer (BC), and Prostate Cancer (PCa). AI, coupled with data analysis, improves early detection and reduces misdiagnosis rates, enhancing treatment precision. AI's application in urological tumors is a research focus, promising a vital role in urological surgery with improved patient outcomes. This paper examines ML, DL in urological tumors, and AI's role in clinical decisions, providing insights for future AI applications in urological surgery.

Applications of artificial intelligence in urologic oncology

Abstract:Purpose: With the recent rising interest in artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine, many studies have explored the potential and usefulness of AI in urological diseases. This study aimed to comprehensively review recent applications of AI in urologic oncology. Materials and methods: We searched the PubMed-MEDLINE databases for articles in English on machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) models related to general surgery and prostate, bladder, and kidney cancer. The search terms were a combination of keywords, including both "urology" and "artificial intelligence" with one of the following: "machine learning," "deep learning," "neural network," "renal cell carcinoma," "kidney cancer," "urothelial carcinoma," "bladder cancer," "prostate cancer," and "robotic surgery." Results: A total of 58 articles were included. The studies on prostate cancer were related to grade prediction, improved diagnosis, and predicting outcomes and recurrence. The studies on bladder cancer mainly used radiomics to identify aggressive tumors and predict treatment outcomes, recurrence, and survival rates. Most studies on the application of ML and DL in kidney cancer were focused on the differentiation of benign and malignant tumors as well as prediction of their grade and subtype. Most studies suggested that methods using AI may be better than or similar to existing traditional methods. Conclusions: AI technology is actively being investigated in the field of urological cancers as a tool for diagnosis, prediction of prognosis, and decision-making and is expected to be applied in additional clinical areas soon. Despite technological, legal, and ethical concerns, AI will change the landscape of urological cancer management.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a crucial technique for extracting high‐throughput information from various sources, including medical images, pathological images, and genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics data. AI has been widely used in the field of diagnosis, for the differentiation of benign and malignant ovarian cancer (OC), and for prognostic assessment, with favorable results. Notably, AI‐based radiomics has proven to be a non‐invasive, convenient and economical approach, making it an essential asset in a gynecological setting. The present study reviews the application of AI in the diagnosis, differentiation and prognostic assessment of OC. It is suggested that AI‐based multi‐omics studies have the potential to improve the diagnostic and prognostic predictive ability in patients with OC, thereby facilitating the realization of precision medicine.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: This review was conducted to systematically summarize the progress made by artificial intelligence technology in early screening based medical imaging, pathological diagnosis, genomics inspection, prognostic evaluation, and individual treatment of lung cancer.BACKGROUND: Lung cancer has a high mortality rate in China, which is closely related to the fact that most lung cancer patients are not diagnosed until the malignancy is advanced. Challenges remain in the early detection, accurate diagnosis, monitoring and individual treatment of lung cancers. Artificial intelligence has developed to process large amounts of data, from clinical presentations to physiological images, which is essential for solving the complex issues with clinical medicine. Increasing evidence has suggested that artificial intelligence technology provides novel, promising strategies for the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer.METHODS: A review of literature was conducted in PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane to identify the latest research on artificial intelligence and lung cancer, and ultimately to generate a narrative review.CONCLUSIONS: Artificial intelligence plays an important role in the imaging inspection, histopathology examination and genomics inspection of lung cancer. In addition, artificial intelligence has the ability to detect a small number of biomarkers, which is conducive to lung cancer monitoring. Moreover, the intelligent treatment of lung cancer has gradually become the trend of future development, whether in internal medicine or surgical treatment. It is believed that artificial intelligence could improve the early diagnosis of lung cancer and assist doctors in treating lung cancer patients individually.

Abstract:The global population is currently at unprecedented levels, with an estimated 7.8 billion people inhabiting the planet. We are witnessing a rise in cancer cases, attributed to improved control of cardiovascular diseases and a growing elderly population. While this has resulted in an increased workload for pathologists, it also presents an opportunity for advancement. The accurate classification of tumors and identification of prognostic and predictive factors demand specialized expertise and attention. Fortunately, the rapid progression of artificial intelligence (AI) offers new prospects in medicine, particularly in diagnostics such as image and surgical pathology. This article explores the transformative impact of AI in the field of uropathology, with a particular focus on its application in diagnosing, grading, and prognosticating various urological cancers. AI, especially deep learning algorithms, has shown significant potential in improving the accuracy and efficiency of pathology workflows. This comprehensive review is dedicated to providing an insightful overview of the primary data concerning the utilization of AI in diagnosing, predicting prognosis, and determining drug responses for tumors of the urinary tract. By embracing these advancements, we can look forward to improved outcomes and better patient care.

This mini-review article aims to summarize current applications and development of AI in urology setting, in particular for diagnosis and treatment of urological diseases. This review will introduce that machine learning algorithm-based models will enhance the prediction accuracy for various bladder diseases including interstitial cystitis, bladder cancer, and reproductive urology.

Abstract:Bladder cancer (BCa) is one of the most diagnosed urological malignancies. A timely and accurate diagnosis is crucial at the first assessment as well as at the follow up after curative treatments. Moreover, in the era of precision medicine, proper molecular characterization and pathological evaluation are key drivers of a patient-tailored management. However, currently available diagnostic tools still suffer from significant operator-dependent variability. To fill this gap, physicians have shown a constantly increasing interest towards new resources able to enhance diagnostic performances. In this regard, several reports have highlighted how artificial intelligence (AI) can produce promising results in the BCa field. In this narrative review, we aimed to analyze the most recent literature exploring current experiences and future perspectives on the role of AI in the BCa scenario. We summarized the most recently investigated applications of AI in BCa management, focusing on how this technology could impact physicians’ accuracy in three widespread diagnostic areas: cystoscopy, clinical tumor (cT) staging, and pathological diagnosis. Our results showed the wide potential of AI in BCa, although larger prospective and well-designed trials are pending to draw definitive conclusions allowing AI to be routinely applied to everyday clinical practice.

Abstract:Bladder cancer (BC) is a serious and common malignant tumor of the urinary system. Accurate and convenient diagnosis and treatment of BC is a major challenge for the medical community. Due to the limited medical resources, the existing diagnosis and treatment protocols for BC without the assistance of artificial intelligence (AI) still have certain shortcomings. In recent years, with the development of AI technologies such as deep learning and machine learning, the maturity of AI has made it more and more applied to the medical field, including improving the speed and accuracy of BC diagnosis and providing more powerful treatment options and recommendations related to prognosis. Advances in medical imaging technology and molecular-level research have also contributed to the further development of such AI applications. However, due to differences in the sources of training information and algorithm design issues, there is still room for improvement in terms of accuracy and transparency for the broader use of AI in clinical practice. With the popularization of digitization of clinical information and the proposal of new algorithms, artificial intelligence is expected to learn more effectively and analyze similar cases more accurately and reliably, promoting the development of precision medicine, reducing resource consumption, and speeding up diagnosis and treatment. This review focuses on the application of artificial intelligence in the diagnosis and treatment of BC, points out some of the challenges it faces, and looks forward to its future development.

The Global Research of Artificial Intelligence on Prostate Cancer: A 22-Year Bibliometric Analysis

Abstract:Background With the rapid development of technology, artificial intelligence (AI) has been widely used in the diagnosis and prognosis prediction of a variety of diseases, including prostate cancer. Facts have proved that AI has broad prospects in the accurate diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer. Objective This study mainly summarizes the research on the application of artificial intelligence in the field of prostate cancer through bibliometric analysis and explores possible future research hotspots. Methods The articles and reviews regarding application of AI in prostate cancer between 1999 and 2020 were selected from Web of Science Core Collection on August 23, 2021. Microsoft Excel 2019 and GraphPad Prism 8 were applied to analyze the targeted variables. VOSviewer (version 1.6.16), Citespace (version 5.8.R2), and a widely used online bibliometric platform were used to conduct co-authorship, co-citation, and co-occurrence analysis of countries, institutions, authors, references, and keywords in this field. Results A total of 2,749 articles were selected in this study. AI-related research on prostate cancer increased exponentially in recent years, of which the USA was the most productive country with 1,342 publications, and had close cooperation with many countries. The most productive institution and researcher were the Henry Ford Health System and Tewari. However, the cooperation among most institutions or researchers was not close even if the high research outputs. The result of keyword analysis could divide all studies into three clusters: “Diagnosis and Prediction AI-related study”, “Non-surgery AI-related study”, and “Surgery AI-related study”. Meanwhile, the current research hotspots were “deep learning” and “multiparametric MRI”. Conclusions Artificial intelligence has broad application prospects in prostate cancer, and a growing number of scholars are devoted to AI-related research on prostate cancer. Meanwhile, the cooperation among various countries and institutions needs to be strengthened in the future. It can be projected that noninvasive diagnosis and accurate minimally invasive treatment through deep learning technology will still be the research focus in the next few years.

Abstract:In recent years, the wide application of artificial intelligence (AI) has dramatically improved the work efficiency of clinicians and reduced their workload. This review provides a glance at the latest advances in AI-assisted diagnosis and prognostic prediction of ovarian cancer (OC). We performed an advanced search in PubMed and IEEE/IET Electronic Library, and included 39 articles in this review. A comprehensive and objective criterion was built to assess the reliability and quality of all studies from four aspects: the size of datasets for model development, research design, the division of training sets and test sets, and the type of quantitative performance indicators. This review analyzed the construction of AI models, including data pre-processing methods, feature selection techniques, AI classifiers, or algorithms. Additionally, we compared the performance of these models built on different datasets, which may support researchers for further iteration and development of AI. Finally, we discussed the challenges and future directions for AI application in medicine.

Abstract:The ongoing growth of artificial intelligence (AI) involves virtually every aspect of oncologic care in medicine. Although AI is in its infancy, it has shown great promise in the diagnosis of oncologic urological conditions. This paper aims to explore the expanding role of artificial intelligence in the histopathological diagnosis in urological oncology. We conducted a focused review of the literature on AI in urological oncology, searching PubMed and Google Scholar for recent advancements in histopathological diagnosis using AI. Various keyword combinations were used to find relevant sources published before April 2nd, 2024. We approached this article by focusing on the impact of AI on common urological malignancies by incorporating the use of different AI algorithms. We targeted the capabilities of AI's potential in aiding urologists and pathologists in histological cancer diagnosis. Promising results suggest AI can enhance diagnosis and personalized patient care, yet further refinements are needed before widespread hospital adoption. AI is transforming urological oncology by improving histopathological diagnosis and patient care. This review highlights AI's advancements in diagnosing prostate, renal cell, and bladder cancer. It is anticipated that as AI becomes more integrated into clinical practice, it will have a greater influence on diagnosis and improve patient outcomes.

Abstract:Background: An increasing number of studies have turned their lens to the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the diagnosis and treatment of colorectal cancer (CRC). Objective: To clarify and visualize the basic situation, research hotspots, and development trends of AI in the diagnosis and treatment of CRC, and provide clues for research in the future. Methods: On January 31, 2024, the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database was searched to screen and export the relevant research published during 2004-2023, and Cite Space, VoSviewer, Bibliometrix were used to visualize the number of publications, countries (regions), institutions, journals, authors, citations, keywords, etc. Results: A total of 2715 pieces of literature were included. The number of publications grew slowly until the end of 2016, but rapidly after 2017, till to the peak of 798 in 2023. A total of 92 countries, 3997 organizations, and 15,667 authors were involved in this research. Chinese scholars released the highest number of publications, and the U.S. contributed the highest number of total citations. As to authors, MORI, YUICHI had the highest number of publications, and WANG, PU had the highest number of total citations. According to the analysis of citations and keywords, the current research hotspots are mainly related to "Colonoscopy", "Polyp Segmentation", "Digital Pathology", "Radiomics", "prognosis". Conclusion: Research on the application of AI in the diagnosis and treatment of CRC has made significant progress and is flourishing across the world. Current research hotspots include AI-assisted early screening and diagnosis, pathology, and staging, and prognosis assessment, and future research is predicted to put weight on multimodal data fusion, personalized treatment, and drug development.

Abstract:As data-driven science, artificial intelligence (AI) has paved a promising path toward an evolving health system teeming with thrilling opportunities for precision oncology. Notwithstanding the tremendous success of oncological AI in such fields as lung carcinoma, breast tumor and brain malignancy, less attention has been devoted to investigating the influence of AI on gynecologic oncology. Hereby, this review sheds light on the ever-increasing contribution of state-of-the-art AI techniques to the refined risk stratification and whole-course management of patients with gynecologic tumors, in particular, cervical, ovarian and endometrial cancer, centering on information and features extracted from clinical data (electronic health records), cancer imaging including radiological imaging, colposcopic images, cytological and histopathological digital images, and molecular profiling (genomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics and so forth). However, there are still noteworthy challenges beyond performance validation. Thus, this work further describes the limitations and challenges faced in the real-word implementation of AI models, as well as potential solutions to address these issues.
