Abstract:For safety protection from infrasound and its metrology, a reference infrasound source was developed on the basis of the laser pistonphone technique. The electromagnetic vibrator was made based on the technology of air bearings and a displacement feedback system. The air bearings reduce the damping of the vibrator, and the displacement feedback system could effectively control the distortion of the pistonphone. Through the displacement of the piston measured by a laser interferometer, the sound pressure could be calculated. In the meantime, the sound pressure was measured by a LS1P microphone with the reciprocity calibration results. The test results show that the difference between the measured pressure and the calculated one is no more than 0.01 dB from 5 to 20 Hz and the total distortion of the sound pressure at 124.0 dB is less than 0.7 % from 1 to 20 Hz.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:An otoacoustic emission (OAE) is a low-level sound emitted by the cochlea. OAEs are able to objectively evaluate the auditory perception and reflect the functional status of the auditory system. With the characteristics of non-invasiveness, high reliability, and easy manipulation, OAEs have gained wide popularity in clinical audiology and anesthesiology. This review aims to summarize the application of OAE in anesthesia.MATERIALS AND METHODS:This study collected data from the databases Web of Science-Clarivate Analytics, PubMed, and Google Scholar in English, covering research in the last 40 years. The keywords were defined as anesthesia, cochlea, OAEs, distortion product otoacoustic emissions, transient evoked otoacoustic emissions, bispectral index, auditory evoked potentials, and depth of anesthesia. Documents that matched defined keywords were selected and reviewed.RESULTS:Research showed that the types and doses of anesthetic drugs impacted OAEs. Ketamine-based anesthesia has a greater effect on OAE sensitivity over time compared to isoflurane. A higher dose of ketamine-xylazine significantly reduced the amplitude of OAEs. According to those characteristics, OAEs could be used as an objective evaluation method for the effect of anesthetics and have great potential to be applied for anesthetic drug dose control during surgery. OAEs also have been used to detect the cochlear function during anesthesia, which may cause irreversible damage to the cochlea.CONCLUSIONS:Studies reported that OAEs have been used in anesthesia. However, the existing studies have mainly focused on the influence of anesthetic types or dosages on OAEs. Considering the characteristics of OAEs, such as a convenient measurement, less susceptibility to interference, and fast detection speed, the application of OAE has a great potential in the anesthesia field.

Abstract:Objective:To study the characteristics of distortion product otoacoustic emissions on mice.Methods:Using male C57BL/6 mice(P18-P30),DPOAEs were measured at 5kHz,6kHz,7kHz and 8kHz.Data were recorded from I/O curve,including(1) the intensity of L1 When the intensity of DPOAE was 0dB SPL,(2) the amplitude of DPOAEs when L1/L2=55/45dB、65/55dB、75/65dB,and(3) the slope of I/O curve.Results:when L1/L2=75/65dB,the amplitude of DPOAE was 0.00±5dB at 5kHz,5.35±5dB at 6kHz,6.34±5dB at 7kHz and 6.12±4dB at 8kHz.When L1/L2=65/55dB,the amplitude of DPOAE was-7.35±4dB at 5kHz,2.80±4dB at 6kHz,3.06±3dBat 7kHz and 7.17±4dB at 8kHz.When L1/L2=55/45dB,the amplitude of DPOAE was-10.39±2dB at 5kHz,-0.66±4dB at 6kHz,-1.88±4dB7kHz and-1.99±5dB at 8kHz.When the amplitude of DPOAE was 0dB SPL,the in tensity of L1 were 3.54±5dB,57.31±8dB,58.89±7dB and 57.04±4dB at 5kHz、6kHz、7kHz and 8kHz,respectively.The slope wes 0.88±0.3,0.36±0.2,0.50±0.2 and 0.93±0.2 at the same four frequency.Conclusion:When the intensity of L1 and L2 are fixed,the amplituds of 2f1-f2 DPOAEs are increased as increasion of the frequencies.When the f1 and f2 are fixed,the amplituds of 2f1-f2 DPOAEs are increased as increasion of the intensity of L1 and L2.The I/O curves are various,and the slope can not reflect the function of cochlea correctly.

Abstract:Acoustic communication has become a research focus without requiring extra hardware on the receiver side and facilitates numerous near-field applications such as mobile payment, data sharing. To communicate, existing researches either use audible frequency band or inaudible one. The former gains a high throughput but endures being audible, which can be annoying to users. The latter, although inaudible, falls short in throughput due to the limited available (near) ultrasonic bandwidth (18-22 kHz). In this paper, we achieve both high speed and inaudibility for acoustic communication by modulating the coded acoustic signal (0-20 kHz) on ultrasonic carrier. By utilizing the nonlinearity effect on microphone, the modulated audible acoustic signal can be demodulated and then decoded. We design and implement UltraComm, an inaudible acoustic communication system with OFDM scheme based on the characteristics of the nonlinear speaker-to-microphone channel. We evaluate UltraComm on different mobile devices and achieve throughput as high as 16.24 kbps, meanwhile, keep inaudibility.

Abstract:Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) are a popular screening tool for hearing loss in specific populations (e.g., newborns). Current screening protocols use stimulus conditions that are agnostic to local mechanical properties of the cochlea and are also limited to a narrow frequency range. We have recently reported locally optimized stimulus frequency ratio and level combinations for recording DPOAEs up to stimulus frequencies of 19 kHz. In normally functioning cochlea, optimized stimuli improved the signal to noise ratios and allowed the registration of higher DPOAE levels, especially at higher frequencies. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical performance of these physiologically motivated, locally appropriate, stimulus parameters for a screening application to identify the presence of hearing loss.

Abstract:Algorithms for measuring stimulus-frequency otoacoustic emission (SFOAE) suppression tuning curves (STCs) typically use pure tones as suppressors, leading to procedures which are time-consuming and difficult to apply in clinical settings. A fast algorithm based on multi-level swept suppressor tones (MLSST) is proposed in this study. Taking advantage of the time-varying frequencies of swept tones, the suppression effects on SFOAE produced by swept suppressor tones are obtained within a single test. Further, a SFOAE STC may be extracted by interpolation from a set of suppression-effect functions at multiple suppressor levels. In the present study, SFOAE STCs were obtained in twenty-six normal-hearing subjects using the fast MLSST and the traditional pure-tone algorithms. SFOAE STCs were measured with high test-retest repeatability using the MLSST algorithm (average mean absolute errors of 2.12 dB) and were nearly consistent with the SFOAE STCs obtained by the pure-tone algorithm (average mean absolute errors of 3.13 dB). In addition, with>1.8 times frequency solution of the acquired curves, the measurement speed of our MLSST algorithm was approximately 2.14 times faster than the traditional one.& COPY; 2023 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:Aiming at the problem that the micro-vibration based on heterodyne interference has low stability and is easily impacted by environmental noise ,the ideas of optical path improve-ment were given .According to the difference principle ,the single optical path was converted to a double optical path ,in which the environmental noise was eliminated ;The elliptically po-larized light was changed into linearly polarized light to improve the interference signal ampli-tude by the polarization splitting prism (PBS);The acousto-optic modulator(AOM ) was im-proved to inhibit frequency drift ;The stray light was suppressed by using diaphragm filters so as to improve the system signal-noise ratio (SNR) .The verification experiments were conduc-ted through detecting 5 kHz piezoelectric vibration signal and 2 .5 M Hz laser ultrasonic signal . Experimental results indicate that signal is stable and has no ripple ,the resolution is 2 .3 nm and the SNR has improved by 16 .7 times .The amplitudes of double-channel heterodyne inter-ferometer signal is 552 mV and 736 mV ,respectively ,which are larger than traditional one nearly 10 times ,it is advantageous to measure nanometer micro-vibration signals .

Abstract:Otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) are low-level signals generated from active processes related to outer hair cell transduction in the cochlea. In current clinical applications, OAEs are typically used to detect the presence or absence of hearing loss. However, their potential extends far beyond hearing screenings. Dr. Glenis Long realized this unfulfilled potential decades ago. She subsequently devoted a large portion of her storied scientific career to understanding OAEs and cochlear mechanics, particularly at the intersection of OAEs and perceptual measures. One specific application of OAEs that has yet to be translated from research laboratories to the clinic is using them to non-invasively characterize cochlear nonlinearity—a hallmark feature of a healthy cochlea—across a wide dynamic range. This can be done by measuring OAEs across input levels to obtain an OAE growth, or input–output (I/O), function. In this review, we describe distortion product OAE (DPOAE) growth and its relation to cochlear nonlinearity and mechanics. We then review biological and measurement factors that are known to influence OAE growth and finish with a discussion of potential applications. Throughout the review, we emphasize Dr. Long's many contributions to the field.

Detection of mild sensory hearing loss using a joint reflection-distortion otoacoustic emission profile

Abstract:Measuring and analyzing both nonlinear-distortion and linear-reflection otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) combined creates what we have termed a "joint-OAE profile." Here, we test whether these two classes of emissions have different sensitivities to hearing loss and whether our joint-OAE profile can detect mild-moderate hearing loss better than conventional OAE protocols have. 2f1-f2 distortion-product OAEs and stimulus-frequency OAEs were evoked with rapidly sweeping tones in 300 normal and impaired ears. Metrics included OAE amplitude for fixed-level stimuli as well as slope and compression features derived from OAE input/output functions. Results show that mild-moderate hearing loss impacts distortion and reflection emissions differently. Clinical decision theory was applied using OAE metrics to classify all ears as either normal-hearing or hearing-impaired. Our best OAE classifiers achieved 90% or better hit rates (with false positive rates of 5%-10%) for mild hearing loss, across a nearly five-octave range. In summary, results suggest that distortion and reflection emissions have distinct sensitivities to hearing loss, which supports the use of a joint-OAE approach for diagnosis. Results also indicate that analyzing both reflection and distortion OAEs together to detect mild hearing loss produces outstanding accuracy across the frequency range, exceeding that achieved by conventional OAE protocols.

Abstract:Distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) are commonly considered to objectively probe the functional state of the cochlear amplifier, with the outer hair cells (OHCs) regarded as its key element ( Brownell 1990 ; Avan et al. 2013 ). One important clinical application of DPOAEs is the detection of relative intra-subject changes in OHC function over time during ototoxic therapy ( Stavroulaki et al. 2001 ; Reavis et al. 2011 ; Poling et al. 2019 ). Furthermore, serial monitoring of DPOAE changes might also become increasingly relevant for the investigation of putative functional improvements due to pharmacologic intervention or in the development of regenerative therapies in patients with impaired hearing due to OHC loss ( Schilder et al. 2019 ; Shibata et al. 2020 ).

Abstract:We proposed a high-performance optical coherence velocimeter (OCV) based on broadband optical interference which achieves spatial resolution from interference cancellation or enhancement of different components of the broadband light. There is a challengeable issue for OCV that the interference fringes become blurred when the velocity of detected object is relatively large, hindering the pace of OCV application in high-velocity field. To resolve this, the relationship between blurry coefficient and OCV system parameters (e.g., exposure time, central wavelength, bandwidth of source) was derived. It was found that blurry coefficient changed with oscillatory decay form and reached the minimum at each order blurry velocity. It showed that maximum measurable velocity of OCV systems could reach 10th order blurry velocity. The measurement of vibration of the loudspeaker driven by a function signal generator was employed to experimentally verify the velocity measurement performance of the system. The experiment demonstrated that the developed OCV can provide large velocity measurement ranges from static to 25.2 mm/s with nanometer-level precision and maximum measurable vibration frequency of up to 50 kHz. However, in theory, the theoretical maximum measurable velocity can be up to 1.06 m/s for current OCV configuration. The OCV has high precision, large dynamic range, and high-velocity measurement capability, making it attractive for applications in mechanical structure vibration monitoring and acoustic measurement.

Abstract:Frequency selectivity is an important indicator of auditory function in the human ear. Stimulus frequency otoacoustic emission (SFOAE) suppression tuning curves (STCs) have great potential in the objective analysis of human auditory frequency selectivity but are costly to measure by the traditional algorithm using pure-tone adaptive method. To improve the measurement efficiency of the SFOAE STCs, a faster algorithm based on a suppressor with gradiently changing intensity and interpolation is proposed in this paper. Twelve subjects participated in this study by measuring their SFOAE STCs through the traditional and fast algorithm. The results shows that the average correlation coefficients of the SFOAE STCs measured using the fast and the traditional algorithms at different probe frequencies is 0.94. And the measurement speed of the fast algorithm was approximately 2.10 times higher than the traditional one. Also, the fast algorithm is more efficient than the algorithms of Keefe et al. (2008) and Charaziak et al. (2013). Experimental evidence is provided that the proposed fast algorithm greatly improves the measurement speed and reduces the processing time, exhibiting good accuracy and reliability.

Abstract:Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) and behavioral audiometry are routinely used for hearing screening and assessment. These measures provide related information about hearing status as both are sensitive to cochlear pathologies. However, DPOAE testing is quicker and does not require a behavioral response. Despite these practical advantages, DPOAE testing is often limited to screening only low and mid- frequencies. Variation in ear canal acoustics across ears and probe placements has resulted in less reliable measurements of DPOAEs near 4 kHz and above where standing waves commonly occur. Stimulus calibration in forward pressure level and responses in emitted pressure level can reduce measurement variability. Using these calibrations, this study assessed the correlation between audiometry and DPOAEs in the extended high frequencies where stimulus calibrations and responses are most susceptible to the effect of standing waves. Behavioral thresholds and DPOAE amplitudes were negatively correlated, and DPOAE amplitudes in emitted pressure level accounted for twice as much variance as amplitudes in sound pressure level. Both measures were correlated with age. These data show that with appropriate calibration methods, extended high-frequency DPOAEs are sensitive to differences in audiometric thresholds and highlight the need to consider calibration techniques in clinical and research applications of DPOAEs.

Abstract:An acoustic-excitation optical coherence vibrometer (AE-OCV) is proposed for noncontact microstructure vibration measurement and modal analysis. The vibration dynamic parameters of the microstructure can be captured with a subnanometer displacement resolution by the proposed AE-OCV using spectral wavelength calibration algorithm and spectral center correction method. The natural frequency of the microstructure could also be obtained by the developed noncontact AE-OCV system using the swept-frequency acoustic excitation method. Furthermore, a home-made spectrometer based on a high-speed linear camera could provide the system with a frequency measurement range of 0–50 kHz. The developed AE-OCV has an excellent performance in microstructures vibration measurement and modal analysis, especially for high-frequency and nanoscale vibration measurements. It is of great significance to the design of the microelectromechanical system (MEMS), such as the noncontact dynamic measurement of cantilevered beams in atomic force microscopy.

Abstract:Otoacoustic emission (OAE) is an acoustic energy evoked from human cochlea and transmitted to the outer ear through ossicular chain and tympanum. It provides an objective, non-invasive and convenient way to detect cochlear function in a shorter time. To improve the removability and anti-noise ability, a portable OAE detecting system was developed based on personal computer and USB soundcard on VC++ Studio 2005 software platform. Both transient evoked OAE (TEOAE) and distortion product OAE (DPOAE) can be detected by the system. Also, the system performance is calibrated, thus quantitative detection and analysis for both TEOAE and DPOAE are achieved.
Characteristics of Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions in the Elderly with Normal Pure-tone Findings

Abstract:Objective The aim of this study was to investigate the basic characteristic of distortion product otoacoustic emissions(DPOAEs) in the elderly with the normal pure-tone results. Methods 39 young adults(21 females,18 males) and 30 elderly(13 females,17 males) were tested with DPOAE.The DPOAE responses were compared at frequencies 500,750,1 000,1 500,2 000,3 000,4 000,6 000 and 8 000 Hz. Results For the frequency range at or lower than 3 kHz,the incidences of DPOAE in the elderly group were similar with that in the young adults.However,at 4,6 and 8kHz,the elderly subjects showed significantly lower incidence of DPOAE with 88.3%,85.0% and 81.7%,respectively.The incidence of DPOAE for the frequency 0.5 through 3 kHz was also higher than that in higher frequencies 4 through 8 kHz,with statistic significance(P<0.05).The DPOAE amplitude in the elderly was lower than in young adults significantly at the entire test frequency band(P<0.05). Conclusion For the elderly group,the level and incidence of the DPOAE in the frequency range 4 kHz and above were significantly decreased compared with that at the frequencies 3 kHz and below.It was suggested that the functioning of outer hair cell(OHC) in higher frequencies at 4 kHz and above have decreased significantly in the elderly.However,this decreasing tendency of DPOAE level with the frequency increase was also appeared in young adults,possibly involving the functioning of outer hair cell(OHC) in higher frequency,at least in young adults,already decreased.

Abstract:Objective: A novel implantable piezoelectric transducer has been developed in this laboratory. The transfer functions of the transducer were assessed in anesthetized acutely implanted cats, and were compared with the microphone of a cochlear implant's speech processor. Methods: The piezoelectric transducer was fixed to the head of the malleus of the cat. Pure tone signals of 97 dB SPL ranging from 250 to 8,000 Hz delivered from a loudspeaker placed beside the auricle of the cat were used to vibrate the tympanic membrane. The frequency response of the transducer was measured by monitoring the output signal of the transducer with an oscilloscope. The transfer functions of the transducer were then compared with the standard external microphone receiving the same tonal stimulus. Results: The average sensitivity of the implantable piezoelectric transducer was -38.7 dB re 1 V/Pa at 1,000 Hz. The frequency-response curve of the transducer mirrored that of the external microphone, even with high-frequency stimuli. Conclusion: The implantable piezoelectric transducer developed in this laboratory transmits tonal stimuli with high fidelity. Copyright (C) 2009 S. Karger AG, Basel

To meet these increasing demands, more requirements of miniaturization, high sensitivity, and broadband response to sensors have been proposed. In this work, we demonstrate and characterize an acousto-optomechanical oscillator based on a silica microbubble and employ it as an acoustic sensor. The dual oscillation modulated by acoustic wave and radiation pressure has a unique waveform that consists of slow and fast oscillation periods, similar to the common amplitude modulation. The phenomenon is modeled by the generic cavity optomechanics dispersive framework and is experimentally validated. The dual resonance enhances the response amplitude of the acoustic signal and avoids narrow working bandwidth around the resonant frequency in a traditional mechanical resonator. Finally, the ultrasensitive broadband acoustic wave sensing experiment is explored, and the sensitivity of 27.98 mV/Pa and the noise equivalent pressure of 0.89 Pa with broadband acoustic responses are achieved. This acoustic sensing method provides a promising platform for applications, such as biomedical diagnosis, industrial monitoring, and trace chemical sensing.
