Abstract:The accident and a familiar feeling We were ready to board our flight from Birmingham, England to Belfast, Northern Ireland. It was late at night on 21 November 2022. As my seat was towards the rear of the plane, we were directed to use the rear boarding stairs. As I attempted to step up with my left knee already flexed, I heard and felt a double pop along with a searing pain as I fell over into the plane. As the flight attendants assisted me to a three-seated row, I was able to stretch out my now swelling left leg. I was convinced that this pain was related to a muscle tear. Yet it felt somewhat different from the total rupture of my right quadriceps tendon which I experienced in 2013. This time I was able to hobble along in pain, although I required assistance. Abstract:This article traces a personal trauma that occurred suddenly, interrupting an academic'ssuccessful career, body narrative and self concept. It applies Adler and Adler's(1989) concept of "glorified self" to the identity dilemmas that sudden disruption the previously taken for granted, operating body brings.The author argues that the "Cartesian" view of the self as a thinking, reasoning, consciously choosing entity is challenged by sudden illness in ways which demand a restorying of the selfand identity. Only now, four years after the event, can she review the learning done as positive.

Abstract:For us, “writing off the beaten track” has been propelled by collaborative study of ontoepistemological contributions that break the constraints of western knowledge-making. Black studies and women of color feminisms prompt us to pause long enough to breathe ... to interrogate the ellipsis ... to sit in the space between words or the dangling punctuation. What’s there (or not there) creatively points to ideas, questions, and methods that subvert the primacy of the western colonial imagination. Our collective writing has often come to us by being worked and reworked, fused and refused in an iterative process, this time with fahima ife’s Maroon Choreography. From homonyms to a wordplay on tracks/tracts, we discuss a writing praxis that has been contoured by radical study and scholarship “actively straying from” disciplined/disciplining conventions. There is always more to knowing and articulating subjects, contexts, and the pursuit of justice.

Abstract:In this performance autoethnography poetry, I report a poem which aims to question the socially constructed concepts and health care practices in times of COVID-19 pandemic. Through my thoughts, questions, answers, and demarcations embodied in my existence as a medical educator/professor/researcher and former (?) physician, I try to enlarge the views of this COVID-19 pandemic, in a context such as the one we are living in Brazil, between the deaths and the denial of the pandemic, in the search to “save the economy.” By playing with my personal/political stories, inviting the readers to think with me about health care, medical education/research, applauses and loneliness, heroes/warriors and fear, and possibilities embodied in our texts, in our lives.

Abstract:This article will discuss M A P, an interactive poetic experience facilitated on the popular media sharing application Instagram, which was developed as a research-based, cross-course collaboration. The artistic methodology applied during M A P was developed during the global pandemic of COVID-19 and was created with, and inspired by the use of blended learning approaches. Acknowledging and addressing the social disconnect and technological hyper-connect during the pandemic, M A P can be understood as a practice-as-research experimentation that investigates how digital technologies might be repurposed in blended artistic practice to allow for a more reflective and embodied experience of ourselves and others in time and place. The makers of M A P advocate the facilitation of autonomous choice-making, particularly in relation to the use of time, space, path and pace, as well as the application of slow technology and slow design considerations to develop abstract story-telling and relational sense-making through the merging of online and real-world activities. Abstract:Imagine being given the immense responsibility and gift as a researcher to deliver a person's final nature experience. People living with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are often sheltered from nature experiences due to their disease status; however, they have rich memories of past nature experiences. The goals of this overall journey of co-creation were two-fold: (1) co-create personalized nature-based utilizing immersive 360-degree virtual reality (VR) experiences based on participants' experiences in outdoor spaces; (2) utilize a narrative approach to explore the lived realities of people living with severe COPD. Throughout this collaborative research process, I made home visits, phone calls, and many trips to four people's personalized outdoor places in the Upstate of South Carolina. In doing so, I lived the experience of person-centered research. This essay focuses specifically on one participant, David, his wife and caregiver, Anne, and the co-creation of David's last virtual trip to his most cherished places in nature. Re-gifting David's last nature experience in his favorite outdoor places profoundly changed my research approach. This essay considers how I reconciled the disconnect between the "scientific" language used in health research and the lived experience of being a researcher during end-of-life processes, specifically attending to the terms: attrition , participant , and researcher .

Abstract:The current account recounts the authors’ artistic virtual interactions during the COVID‐19 period of quarantine to discuss how connections between art, writing, humans’ embodied struggles and technologies can enable forms of feminist writing, as a cyborg practice, which have the political potential to meaningfully voice embodied experiences of inter‐sectionality and vulnerability that remain increasingly under‐expressed, in a neoliberal world of pandemic. Presented in a creative prose, whereby theory interweaves with artistic performances, poetry and extracts of the authors’ virtual exchanges, this account reflects how hybrid, non‐conventional, cyborg writing explorations can connect different bodies in an academic text even when these bodies are physically kept apart. By invoking hybridity that counters the masculine conventions of academic writing, this text aspires to produce academic knowledge that writes and speaks of embodied experiences of othering that urgently seek expression under the COVID‐19 pandemic. The current account builds on the burgeoning stream of organizational literature on writing differently and especially feminist forms of writing integrating genre‐blurring prose, poetry and art‐based research.

Abstract:This essay is situated within the broad area of autoethnography, particularly referring to the idea of ‘writing about writing’, which is grounded in the reflection of the process of writing and the contexts in which that writing occur. The author employs a personal narrative to reflect on the situation that she had found herself in during the Covid-19 pandemic and which can best be defined by the concept of trajectory. It is a biographical situation marked with chaos and disintegration, evoking identity changes. As a result, the trajectory set new directions for the course of the biography. In the discussion on the schemes of dealing with the trajectory of suffering, author refers to Paul Ricoeur’s narrative concept, in particular the refiguration phase, as a stage of redefining one’s own life situation. Finally, author comes to the conclusion that the process of writing this essay can be viewed as a form of self-care, which Audre Lorde defined as self-preservation.

Disembodiment and Identity in Literary Depictions of Epilepsy Surgery

Abstract:This article explores the often perplexing experience of being an epilepsy surgery candidate, as portrayed in four book-length accounts: Laura Doermer's Moritz mein Sohn (Moritz my son, 1990), David B.'s L'ascension du haut mal (The ascent of the high evil, 1996; published in English as Epileptic, 2003), Ray Robinson's Electricity (2006), and Alberto Capitta's Il giardino non esiste (The garden doesn't exist, 2009). Building upon critical disability studies and the work of French poststructuralists Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, I analyze issues of embodiment, identity and narrative (re)construction in the postsurgical alleviation of chronic illness. I argue that these texts highlight the inevitable disruption of self that brain surgery entails and ultimately resist biomedical normativization. They also call for a narratological reconsideration of current illness narrative typologies, among which Arthur Frank's "chaos narrative" emerges as the best suited to accommodate the chronic fragmentation of consciousness and voice in epilepsy.

Abstract:This reflective poem explores the profound human impact of receiving a serious medical diagnosis. The speaker grapples with the emotional upheaval of this sudden severing from one's presumed healthy future. There are attempts to cling to denial or bargain for a different outcome. But the truth of the diagnosis persists, sending ripples of change throughout the patient's life. Dreams slip away and plans evaporate in the crucible of illness. After a struggle, the mind makes peace and courageously leans into the difficulties ahead. The poem celebrates the human capacity to accept vulnerability, find gifts within trials, and walk the remaining road with wisdom. It reflects on how a diagnosis can heighten awareness that life is fleeting and precious. The accompanying digital artwork was generated using OpenAI's DALL·E 3 and modified using Adobe Firefly. It is a stark, black canvas, which can be seen as a metaphor for the profound and contemplative journey described patients go through. It symbolizes the inner darkness and uncertainty faced when confronting life-altering diagnoses, echoing the feelings of isolation, the search for meaning, and the gradual acceptance of a new reality as one navigates through the trials of illness.

Abstract:Background: Effects following a hip fracture often lead to functional disabilities and increased dependence on others. Although persons sustaining a hip fracture constitute a heterogeneous group in Swedish health care, they tend to be treated as a homogenous one. Aim: The aim of this study was to reveal how previously healthy people, aged 65 years and older, described how they had adapted to daily life four months after a hip fracture. Method: The follow-up interviews were performed by the first author four months after the hip fracture. Data were analysed using conventional inductive content analysis. Findings: The results from the interviews highlight that sustaining a hip fracture - even four months later - was seen by the participants as an interruption leading to lasting consequences for everyday life. The recovery process during this period was complex and consisted of both physical and psychological strain. Some were resigned, some strived in order to regain independence and some handled the situation by means of self-confidence and self-efficacy. Conclusion: Previous healthy and independently-living participants described, in different ways that the hip fracture was an interruption that still affected everyday life. The absence of psychological support may be one of the reasons for dependency after four months.
