Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO2) hydrogenation can not only mitigate global warming, but also produce value-added chemicals. Herein, we report a novel three-phase catalytic system with an in situ generated and dynamically updated thin water film covered on the noble-metal-free TiO2-based catalyst for highly efficient CO2 hydrogenation, realizing a four-time enhancement compared with that with the catalyst suspended in water. The water film plays dual roles by directly participating in the reaction and removing the produced oxygenates (mainly formic acid) from the catalyst surface by dissolution. These results demonstrate an effective design for CO2 hydrogenation, which will open a new door to three-phase catalysis.

Abstract:The reduction of CO2 into value-added chemicals is highly desired, especially when there is no catalyst and the water is used as a green solvent under mild reaction conditions. In this work, an effective process for the base-assisted transfer hydrogenation of CO2 to formate with ammonia borane (BH3NH3) in water is demonstrated under mild conditions without any catalysts. Further research shows that CO2 reacts with water and base to produce bicarbonate intermediate which can be easily reduced to formate by BH3NH3. The role of base is to capture CO2 and move the unfavourable equilibrium of CO2 reduction towards the formation of product. This new mechanism can also lead to achieve the reduction of commercial bicarbonate or carbonate to formate under the same conditions.

Abstract:Direct conversion of CO2 into pure formic acid (FA) solution in absence of base additives is of great significant but challenging due to thermodynamic limitation. Here, we have synthesized three kinds of amine groups, including primary amine (PA), secondary amine (SA) and tertiary amine (TA), modified ultrafine Pd nano-catalysts and firstly realized efficient hydrogenation of CO2 to pure FA in water at room temperature. Comprehensive characterizations reveal that all the amine groups are beneficial to the formation of ultrafine and uniform Pd nanoclusters (<2 nm), and Pd-rich electron property plays competitive effect with steric hindrance of amine groups on the CO2 hydrogenation activity. The SA modified catalyst of Pd/AC-SA, with lower binding energy of N and steric hindrance, thus shows the best turnover frequency (TOF) of 29.1 h-1 at 298 K and 4.0 MPa, which is even comparable to that of the reported heterogeneous catalysts with base additives under harsh conditions. The DFT calculations further revealed the mechanism of CO2 hydrogenation and the first H atom hydrogenation is rate-determining step, which are well in line with the experiments. This work, as a successful example for direct generation of pure FA solution at room temperature, exhibits great potential for future hydrogen storage in large scales.

Abstract:The hydrogenation of CO2 with gaseous hydrogen is currently believed to be the most commercially feasible synthetic method to resolve the serious worldwide greenhouse gas effects. However it is suffering from several disadvantages, such as expensive complex catalysts, and high energy consumption. In this study, a novel method for the hydrogenation of CO2 into formic acid with nano-Ni catalyst is developed. The effects of various parameters on the capability of the catalyst for CO2 conversion were investigated. Furthermore, the HCO3- reduction process on the catalyst was rationalized theoretically with density functional theory simulations. The prepared nano-Ni was demonstrated to be an available catalyst for CO2 conversion into formic acid by employing H-2 as a hydrogen source at ambient temperature and almost constant pressure. Moreover, the nano-Ni catalyst displayed good tolerance with pH variations in CO2 reduction. The formation of formic acid from CO2 reduction on nano-Ni particles was enhanced with an increase NaHCO3 concentration and catalyst dosage. Additionally, theoretical analysis elucidated that the hydrogenation of CO2 into formic acid on nano-Ni catalyst was favorable over attacking the C of HCO3- by the active H and hydroxyl group. Abstract:In this paper, we give an overview of recent advances in the production of formic acid, as a hydrogen carrier, from CO2 and water by using the earth-abundant metal of Fe as the reductant under hydrothermal conditions, which mainly includes: 1) hydrogen production from water with Fe; 2) reduction of HCO3– to formic acid in the presence and absence of catalysts; 3) proposed reaction mechanisms. The novel options under this study are mainly the use of water as a hydrogen source with metal Fe as a reductant, and the formed FexOy as an auto-catalyst. Such a process possesses several benefits: (i) water acts not only as a hydrogen source but also as an environmentally benign solvent; (ii) there are no hydrogen requirements, including pumps or storage, because hydrogen is derived from water and reacts with CO2 in situ; (iii) no exotic catalysts or harsh reagents are used; and (iv) the method is simple and highly efficient. This technology can provide a one-step, sustainable and highly efficient way to reduce CO2 into formic acid using the hydrogen directly from water.

Abstract:The increasing atmospheric CO2 level causes global warming and may pose catastrophic effects to the humanity. Among the various options to reduce the CO2 atmospheric loading, hydrothermal reactions may have a high potential for rapidly and effectively converting CO2 into useful chemicals. In this study, the hydrothermal conversion of CO2 into formic acid was carried out by using Fe as a reductant and Ni as a catalyst. The effect of various experimental parameters, e.g., amount of Fe (Ni), Fe/Ni ratio, temperature, reaction time, alkalinity etc. was investigated. Results showed that Ni played a catalytic role in the hydrothermal conversion of CO2 into formic acid. The highest yield of formic acid of 15.6% was achieved under optimal conditions, i.e., Fe/Ni ratio of 1:1, temperature of 300°C, reaction time of 120min, filling rate of 35% and NaHCO3: Fe of 1:6. Additionally, the selectivity of formic acid was more than 98%. It was also found that the hydrothermal conversion could not occur without either the addition of catalyst or the existence of CO2 when Fe was used as a reductant. The role of CO2 in the hydrogen production was discussed.

Abstract:Although CO2 hydrogenation to formic acid has been widely investigated, the design of highly stable and effective heterogeneous catalysts is a long-standing challenge due to the instability of the active intermediate in water. Herein, both theoretical and experimental results revealed that the active Ir-H species appearing in the CO2 hydrogenation process can be easily hydrolyzed, resulting in the deactivation of the catalyst. Further research constructed a strategy to protect the active Ir-H species by utilizing a directly-knitted PNP-based catalyst (p-PNP-Ir) for CO2 hydrogenation to formic acid. An unpredictable conversion (TON = 1.11 x 10(6)) can be achieved using p-PNP-Ir in water, being 3.15 times higher than that using the monomer PNP-Ir. Besides, the solid catalysts can be easily recycled for at least 15 runs without activity loss, highlighting their potential for practical applications in industry.

Abstract:Reduction of CO2 into value-added chemicals has attracted considerable attention as an important method to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and also to alleviate the current dependence on fossil fuels. Traditional reducing agent for CO2 reduction relies on gaseous hydrogen from high-pressure cylinder, which meets storage and transportation problem. Moreover, the thermodynamical stability of gaseous hydrogen results in the demand of high reactive catalyst, mainly involving noble-metal complexes. Thus, new safe and facile hydrogen source is needed urgently. Hydrous hydrazine, which possesses high hydrogen capacity (7.9%), is regarded as a promising liquid hydrogen storage material. Herein, hydrous hydrazine was employed as a in-situ hydrogen source for reduction of CO2 under hydrothermal conditions. A 50% yield of formic acid with 99% selectivity was achieved by using a common Ni powder catalyst. The proposed method is facile and environment-friendly because it requires neither elaborately prepared catalysts, nor high-purity hydrogen and hydrogen storage.

Abstract:Abstract The efficient transformation of CO 2 into chemicals and fuels is a key challenge for the decarbonisation of the synthetic production chain. Formic acid (FA) represents the first product of CO 2 hydrogenation and can be a precursor of higher added value products or employed as a hydrogen storage vector. Bases are typically required to overcome thermodynamic barriers in the synthesis of FA, generating waste and requiring post-processing of the formate salts. The employment of buffers can overcome these limitations, but their catalytic performance has so far been modest. Here, we present a methodology utilising IL as buffers to catalytically transform CO 2 into FA with very high efficiency and comparable performance to the base-assisted systems. The combination of multifunctional basic ionic liquids and catalyst design enables the synthesis of FA with very high catalytic efficiency in TONs of >8*10 5 and TOFs > 2.1*10 4 h −1 .

Abstract:Hydrogenation of CO2 to formate with H2 in the absence of transition metal is a long-standing challenge in catalysis. The reactions between tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane (BCF) and K2 CO3 (or KHCO3 ) are found to form a Lewis pair (K2 [(BCF)2 -CO3 ]) which can react with both H2 and CO2 to produce formate. Based on these stoichiometric reactions, the first catalytic hydrogenation process of CO2 to formate using transition metal free catalyst (BCF/M2 CO3 , M=Na, K, and Cs) is reported. The highest TON value of this catalytic process is up to 3941. Further research revealed the reaction mechanism in which the Lewis pair enables the splitting of H2 and the insertion of CO2 into the B-H bond.

Abstract:In this work, DFT-based calculations and microkinetic modeling were employed to investigate CO 2 hydrogenation to formic acid using H 2 over Co and Cu single-atom catalysts supported on MOF-808. We investigated two pathways: one without the introduction of a second H 2 molecule (pathway A) and another one with it (pathway B). Pathway B, which involves introducing the second H 2 molecule alongside the formate intermediate from the first step, exhibits significantly lower energy barriers (three times less) for the transformation into formic acid in the second step of CO 2 hydrogenation. Moreover, pathway B shifts the reaction thermodynamics from endergonic to exergonic, highlighting its kinetic and thermodynamic advantages. Notably, we observed formate intermediates with quasi-bidentate geometry alongside the prevalent bidentate chelating geometry. Cu 2+ -MOF-808 exhibits superior catalytic activity compared to Co 2+ -MOF-808, attributed to Cu's stronger preference for stabilizing the transition state in its square planar geometry through the Jahn-Teller effect, which is less effective in Co. Furthermore, our microkinetic modeling consistently confirms that Cu 2+ -MOF-808 outperforms Co 2+ -MOF-808 at lower temperature, with the rate of formic acid production depending on the concentration of H 2 . The desorption of formic acid is identified as the rate-determining step of the reaction, significantly impact overall efficiency.

Abstract:A theoretical study with quantum chemistry calculations was performed to investigate highly efficient reduction of CO2 to formic acid using Al under mild hydrothermal conditions. All the structures of the reactants, products and transition states were optimized by B3LYP functional using the extended 6-311 + G(3df,2p) basis set. The formation of HA1OH species, an intermediates in the reaction of Al with H2O, was calculated firstly. The formation of HCOO- was simulated subsequently. Our theoretical results showed that Al-H is a key intermediate species in the highly efficient reduction of CO2 to formic acid using Al under mild hydrothermal conditions, which demonstrated that the formation of formic acid is through an SN2-like mechanism. Abstract:Hydrogenation of carbon dioxide (CO2) to produce formic acid (HCOOH) in base-free condition can avoid waste producing and simplify product separation process. However, it remains a big challenge because of the unfavorable energy in both thermodynamics and dynamics. Herein, we report the selective and efficient hydrogenation of CO2 to HCOOH under neutral conditions with imidazolium chloride ionic liquid as the solvent, catalyzed by a heterogeneous Ir/PPh3 compound. The heterogeneous catalyst is more effective than the homogeneous one because it is inert in catalyzing the decomposition of product. A turnover number (TON) of 12700 can be achieved, and HCOOH with a purity of 99.5% can be isolated by distillation because of the non-volatility of the solvent. Both the catalyst and imidazolium chloride can be recycled at least 5 times with stable reactivity.

Abstract:Hydrogenation of CO2 is challenging, especially when non-precious metals are used as catalysts. Herein, we report an effective hydrogenation of CO2 to formate catalyzed by imidazole ionic liquid modified acetate-Cu. The catalytic ability of acetate-Cu was greatly enhanced by ionic liquid modification. The highest turnover number could reach 2005, which is 12.2 times higher than that of unmodified acetate-Cu. Besides, the ionic liquid modified acetate-Cu is easy to be recycled.

Abstract:The Earth's sustainable development is threatened by the increasing atmospheric CO2 level which can be attributed to the imbalance of CO2 due to the rapid consumption of fossil fuels caused by human activities and the slow absorption and conversion of CO2 by nature. One of the efficient methods for reconstructing the balance of CO2 should involve the rapid conversion of CO2 into fuels and chemicals. The hydrogenation of CO2 with gaseous hydrogen is currently considered to be the most commercially feasible synthetic route, however, the supply of safe and economical hydrogen sources poses a significant challenge to up-scaling application. Direct utilization of hydrogen from dissociation of water, the most abundant, cheap and clean hydrogen resource, for the reduction of CO2 would be one of the most promising approaches for CO2 utilization. This paper provides an overview of the current advances in research on highly efficient reduction of CO2 or NaHCO3, a representative compound of CO2, into formic acid/formate by in situ hydrogen from water dissociation with a metal/metal oxide redox cycle under mild hydrothermal conditions.

Abstract:Conversion of CO2 into value-added chemicals and fuels is one promising method for mitigating global warming and fossil fuel depletion. However, hindered by the dual barriers of CO(2 )activation and selective catalytic C-C coupling, hydrogenation of CO2 into multicarbon products, especially for organic acids, still remains a great challenge. In this work, an acetate yield of 9.5% from direct CO2 reduction was obtained via a specific hexagonal closed-packed cobalt (HCP-Co) catalyst under hydrothermal conditions. Results showed that the in situ formed CoO/Co interface was the key for the CO2 activation and subsequent C-C coupling. The unique properties of hydrothermal reactions were found to modulate the proportion of metal oxide/ metal on the catalyst surface, which then gave a stable formation of CoO/Co interface. A plausible reaction pathway is also proposed based on the time-dependent experiments and DFT calculation, in which *CH2 and HCOO as the intermediates were combined to form CH3COO- through the carbene reaction. This study provides a robust approach for C-C coupling in CO(2 )hydrogenation without noble metal catalysts, which is essential for the practical application.
