Abstract:Electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a promising technology for combining CO2 reutilization and renewable electricity storage. For economic feasibility, better catalysts are required to overcome current limitations such as high overpotentials, poor faradaic efficiencies (FEs), and low current densities. Herein, size‐ and composition‐controlled gold (Au)–palladium (Pd) bimetallic alloy nanoparticles prepared by a metal vapor synthesis technique together with the monometallic Au and Pd equivalent materials are investigated. X‐ray diffraction and high‐angle annular dark‐field scanning transmission electron microscopy energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy analyses confirm the Au–Pd alloy formation with an average atomic ratio of 76 Pd wt% and 24 Au wt%. These bimetallic and the monometallic catalysts are characterized and tested for the electroreduction of CO2 in electrochemical cells and also in a complete CO2 electrolysis cell. Analysis of the reduction products shows a 100% CO2RR selectivity for CO. The FE for CO with respect to H2 as high as 90% is obtained with Au–Pd/C by tuning the electrode structure. The Au/C and Pd/C catalysts also show a better selectivity for CO with no evidence of other CO2RR products. The Au–Pd alloy formation improves the FE of Pd for CO by suppressing the parasitic H2 evolution reaction.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2ER) to produce formate is an economically viable route for CO2 upgrading. Bismuth (Bi)-based materials have been recognized as promising catalysts for this reaction but suffer from low activity that hinders their practical applications. Here, we report a cooperative catalyst of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) supported on a layered bismuth subcarbonate (Bi2O2CO3; BOC) nanosheet array (Ag/BOC), which achieves a 2-fold higher reaction rate in comparison to pure BOC with a high Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 98% to formate, and the FE is maintained at > 85% over a wide potential window from -0.86 to -1.26 V vs RHE. Experimental results combined with theoretical results reveal that Ag accelerates the dissociation of H2O to supply reactive hydrogen species, which migrate to adjacent Bi sites to accomplish CO2 reduction with promoted activity. Moreover, we realized coproduction of formate at two poles of a homemade two-electrode flow cell by pairing the CO2ER (at the cathode) and electrooxidation of glycerol (at the anode), achieving an apparent formate FE of 130% at 2.2 V, as well as a 63% electric energy saving for formate production in comparison with the traditional CO2ER coupled with the water oxidation reaction.

Abstract:The bismuth subcarbonate nanoflowers demonstrate highly selective formation of formate in CO2 electroreduction. The self‐contained carbonate species within the electrocatalyst provide the unique reinforced CO2 adsorption properties and fast CO2 adsorption–desorption kinetics, which results in the high formate Faradic efficiencies in a wide potential window. The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a promising strategy to convert CO2 to carbon‐based fuels and to simultaneously reduce the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. In this work, the bismuth subcarbonate nanoflowers (BOC NFs) are facilely prepared through a one‐pot synthesis method for efficient formate electrosynthesis through CO2RR. Benefiting from the crystal structure and sheet‐stacked morphology, the in situ measurements and theoretical calculation results reveal the self‐reinforced CO2 adsorption properties and rapid CO2 adsorption–desorption kinetics on the catalyst surface, which significantly facilitate the CO2RR process. As a result, the desirable Faradaic efficiencies of over 90%, with a maximum value of 98.9%, toward formate formation, are achieved in a wide potential window from −0.8 to −1.4 V in an H‐type cell. Moreover, in a flow cell, the superior intrinsic activity of BOC NFs guarantees the high throughput electrocatalytic performance of CO2RR and the FEformate of over 90% with high current density is achieved in a potential range as wide as 1200 mV, demonstrating the great potential of BOC NFs for practical CO2RR applications. These results underscore the effectiveness of designing electrocatalysts with self‐reinforced CO2 adsorption properties to improve electrocatalytic performance for efficient CO2RR.

Abstract:Renewable-energy-drived CO2 electroreduction provides a promising way to address the growing greenhouse effect issue and produce value-added chemicals. As one of bulk chemicals, formic acid/formate has the highest revenue per mole of electrons among various products. However, the scaling up CO2-to-formate for practical applications in high Faradaic efficiency (FE) and current density is constrained by the difficulty of precisely reconciling the competing intermediates (*COOH and HCOO*). Herein, a Zn-induced electron-rich Sn electrocatalyst was reported for CO2-to-formate with high efficiency. The faradaic efficiency of formate (FEformate) could reach 96.6%, and FEformate > 90% was maintained at formate partial current density up to 625.4 mA cm-1. Detailed study indicated that the catalyst reconstruction occurred during electrolysis. With appropriate electron accumulation, the electron-rich Sn catalyst could facilitate the adsorption and activation of CO2 molecule to form CO2* intermediate, and then promoted the carbon protonation of CO2* to yield HCOO* intermediate. Afterwards, the HCOO* → HCOOH* proceeded via another proton-coupled electron transfer process, leading to high activity and selectivity for formate production.

Overcoming Low C2+ Yield in Acidic CO2 Electroreduction: Modulating Local Hydrophobicity for Enhanced Performance

Abstract:An in situ electrodeposition method is employed to modulate the catalyst coverage on the microporous layer, enabling a wide‐ranging adjustment of the microenvironment hydrophobicity. Enhanced hydrophobicity significantly facilitates the yield of multi‐carbon species and suppresses the parasitic hydrogen evolution. And the phenomenon can be further extended to an industrially relevant slurry‐based approach with hydrophobic microspheres. Operating electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) in acidic media has garnered considerable attention due to its sustainable electrolyte cycling and stable performance. Nevertheless, the severe parasitic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and decayed multi‐carbon species (C2+) yield still hampers efficient CO2RR in acid. Here, this work investigates the influence of local hydrophobicity on the acidic CO2RR. By employing direct electrodeposition, the hydrophobicity of the catalyst layer can be finely tuned over a wide range without additive. It is revealed that the hydrophobic microenvironment significantly suppressed HER, improved CO2RR performance and boosted C2+ yield. A Faradaic efficiency (FE) of ≈74% for C2+ is achieved in pH = 2 on electrodeposited copper with a highly hydrophobic environment. Moreover, this phenomenon can be extended to industrial application. An ≈81% total FE for the CO2RR, along with a ≈62% FE for C2+ species, is achieved even with commercial copper. Remarkably, the system exhibited stable operation for a continuous period exceeding 50 h at an industrially applied current density of 300 mA cm−2. This work highlights the crucial role of interface hydrophobicity in acidic CO2RR and proposes a facile and universally applicable method for achieving efficient and stable CO2RR to high‐value products in acidic media.

Abstract:Electrochemical reduction of CO2 (CO2RR) to formate is a promising route to prepare value-added chemical. Developing low-cost and efficient electrocatalysts with high product selectivity is still a grand challenge. Herein, a novel Cu anchored on hollow carbon spheres catalysts (HCS/Cu-x, x represents the mass of CuCl2 added in the system) is designed with controllable copper/carbon heterogenous interfaces. Rich copper/carbon heterogenous interfaces and hollow structure of optimized HCS/Cu-0.12 catalyst are beneficial to charge transmission. Compared with the CO2RR occurred in aqueous electrolyte over Cu-based catalyst that has been reported to date, it exhibits highest formate Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 82.4% with a current density of 26 mA cm−2 and remarkable stability in a H-cell.

Abstract:Electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), powered by renewable energy sources, provides an appealing approach to convert emitted CO2 to value-added chemicals and fuels and achieve a carbon-neutral cycle. Among various carbon-based products, formic acid (HCOOH) has been considered as a promising liquid hydrogen storage material due to its high energy density and hydrogen content. However, so far, the reported HCOOH-selective catalysts (e.g., Bi, Sn, In, Pb and Pd) have failed in either activity (< 500 mA cm-2) or stability (< 20 h), which significantly inhibits the industrialized feasibility of CO2RR. In contrast, Cu takes the advantages of excellent activity and low cost, making it more commercially viable. To date, one of the most challenging issues of Cu-based catalysts lies in unsatisfactory selectivity, that is, tending to produce mixed products rather than specific one, due to the complicated reaction paths involved. Very recently, Zheng et al. have developed a single-atom alloy (SAAs) strategy for the exclusive CO2-to-formate conversion over Cu-based catalysts. The as-prepared Pb single-atom alloyed Cu catalyst (Pb1Cu) (Fig. 1a) exhibited near unity selectivity towards HCOOH and impressive stability, providing the prospect of industrial production of HCOOH from CO2.

Abstract:Catalysts involving post-transition metals have shown almost invincible performance on generating formate in electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). Conversely, Cu without post-transition metals have struggled to achieve comparable activity. In this study, a sulfur (S)-doped-copper (Cu)-based catalyst is developed, exhibiting excellent performance in formate generation with a maximum Faradaic efficiency of 92% and a partial current density of 321 mA cm-2. Ex-situ structural elucidations reveal the presence of abundant grain boundaries and high retention of S-S bonds from the covellite phase during CO2RR. Furthermore, thermodynamic calculations demonstrate that S-S bonds can moderate the binding energies with various intermediates, further improving the activity of the formate pathway. This work is significant in modifying a low-cost catalyst (Cu) with a non-metallic substance (S) to achieve comparable performance to mainstream catalysts for formate generation in industrial grade.

Tuning Sn3O4 for CO2 Reduction to Formate with Ultra-High Current Density

Abstract:In light of environmental concerns and energy demand, significant progress has been made toward CO2 reduction with high activity and selectivity. Particular interest has been focused on liquid products because of the easier separation process and higher value comparing to traditional gaseous products. Formic acid (or formate) can be one of the most economically viable reduction products. Nevertheless, few catalysts can meet the requirement for commercial-viable production, especially the current density. Herein, a hierarchical-Sn3O4 nanosheet (H-Sn3O4 NS) electrocatalyst is synthesized and applied into a three-compartment CO2 flow cell electrolyzer with ultrahigh current density. The as-synthesized H-Sn3O4 NS electrocatalyst enables electrochemical CO2 reduction to formate with the selectivity of 91.1% at -1.02 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) as well as a partial current density of 421 mA cm(-2), whose performance is among the best that has been reported for CO2 electrocatalysts. The superior performance is due to the three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical structure, which supplies a large electrochemical surface area (ECSA) to facilitate mass and charge transfer. And the stability study with in-situ Raman spectroscopy and XRD characterization exhibited that the Sn3O4 materials could still maintain its original oxidation state under the maximum formate Faradaic efficiency of CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). The further theoretical calculation shows that the catalyst surface is beneficial for the formation of OCHO star (the intermediate of formate) than COOH star (the intermediate of CO) or H-star (the intermediate of H-2), which is in favor of the high activity and selectivity for formate in the experiments.

Abstract:Facile interconversion between CO2 and formate/formic acid is important for energy storage and conversion and for neutral carbon emission. Boron-doped Pd catalyst (Pd-B/C), which was previously found in our group with a high CO tolerance to facilitate dehydrogenation of formic acid/formate to CO2[1-4], is now explored for electrochemical hydrogenation of CO2 with reference to Pd/C over a wide potential window [5]. Faradaic efficiency of formate (ηHCOO-) in the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) reaches above 70% after 2 h of electrolysis in CO2-saturated 0.1 M KHCO3 at -0.5 V (vs RHE) on Pd-B/C, twelve times higher than that on homemade or commerical Pd/C, leading to a partial formate current of nearly 60 mA mg-1 Pd (ca. 300 mMHCOO- mg-1 Pd) without optimization of the catalyst layer and the substrate. Although the η HCOO- decreases and the CO faradaic efficiency (η CO) increases as potential goes more negatively, the competitive selectivity η HCOO-/ηCO is always higher on Pd-B/C than on Pd/C at all the potentials examined. The density functional theory (DFT) calculation on energetic aspects of CO2RR on modelled Pd(111) surfaces with and without H-adsorbate confirms that B-doping in the Pd subsurface favors more the adsorption of HCOO*, an intermediate for the formic acid pathway than that of *COOH, an intermediate for the CO pathway. Our results reveal that Pd-B/C is a unique bifunctional catalyst for promoting the HCOOH « CO2 cycle [5]. Abstract:The development of catalysts and electrochemical systems for CO2 electroreduction has achieved substantial progress recently, while the long‐time operation of electrolyzing CO2 to formate with high activity and selectivity remains as a major challenge, due to the continuous carbonate precipitation at elevated pHs. Herein, hexagonal phase In2O3 (h‐In2O3) is demonstrated with a monodispersed porous nanosphere structure that can serve as an efficient electrocatalyst for converting CO2 to formate, with a peak Faradaic efficiency of 98%, high partial current densities for producing formate, and outstanding electrochemical stability, substantially exceeding cubic phase In2O3 and most of the previously reported electrocatalysts. Both experimental and theoretical studies reveal that the excellent activity and stability are attributed to the enhanced adsorption and activation of CO2 on the h‐In2O3 surface, and the rich surface hydroxyl groups further facilitate the inhibition of carbonate formation. This work suggests attractive features of the phase engineering to modulate surface hydroxyl groups for efficient and robust catalysts for CO2 electroreduction.

Abstract:An important step in the efficient production of formate (HCOO-) from CO2 and water is the development of electrocatalysts with high selectivity, activity at large current densities. Here we report a new heterostructure electrocatalyst which demonstrate highly selective CO2 reduction reaction by selective growth of polycrystalline Tin oxides on the graphdiyne. Our results show the natural advantages of GDY in effectively regulating the valence states of Sn and phase structure transition of the catalyst, and increasing charge transfer capacity and number of active sites, resulting in excellent catalytic performance. The electrocatalyst can selectively and efficiently produce and stabilize the key *OCHO intermediates and promote the formation of formate by completely inhibiting the competing HER, greatly promoting CO2RR. The electrocatalyst shows superior CO2-to-formate conversion performance at ambient temperatures and pressures with a highest reaction selectivity of 99.5% and a high formate yield rate of 323.42 μmol h−1 cm−2 in a large current density of 112 mA cm−2 at a low applied potential of − 0.9 V versus RHE.

Electron-Efficient Co-electrosynthesis of Formates from CO2 and Methanol Feedstocks

Abstract:The electrochemical conversion of CO2 into valuable chemicals using renewable electricity shows significant promise for achieving carbon neutrality and providing alternative energy storage solutions. However, its practical application still faces significant challenges, including high energy consumption, poor selectivity, and limited stability. Here, we propose a hybrid acid/alkali electrolyzer that couples the acidic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) at the cathode with alkaline methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) at the anode. This dual electro-synthesis cell is implemented by developing Bi nanosheets as cathode catalysts and oxide-decorated Cu2Se nanoflowers as anode catalysts, enabling high-efficiency electron utilization for formate production with over 180% coulombic efficiency and more than 90% selectivity for both CO2RR and MOR conversion. The hybrid acid/alkali CO2RR-MOR cell also demonstrates long-term stability exceeding 100 hours of continuous operation, delivers a formate partial current density of 130 mA cm-2 at a voltage of only 2.1 V, and significantly reduces electricity consumption compared to the traditional CO2 electrolysis system. This study illuminates an innovative electron-efficiency and energy-saving techniques for CO2 electrolysis, as well as the development of highly efficient electrocatalysts.

Efficient Capture and Electroreduction of Dilute CO2 into Highly Pure and Concentrated Formic Acid Aqueous Solution

Abstract:High-purity CO2 rather than dilute CO2 (15 vol %, CO2/N2/O2 = 15:80:5, v/v/v) similar to the flue gas is currently used as the feedstock for the electroreduction of CO2, and the liquid products are usually mixed up with the cathode electrolyte, resulting in high product separation costs. In this work, we showed that a microporous conductive Bi-based metal-organic framework (Bi-HHTP, HHTP = 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene) can not only efficiently capture CO2 from the dilute CO2 under high humidity but also catalyze the electroreduction of the adsorbed CO2 into formic acid with a high current density of 80 mA cm-2 and a Faradaic efficiency of 90% at a very low cell voltage of 2.6 V. Importantly, the performance in a dilute CO2 atmosphere was close to that under a high-purity CO2 atmosphere. This is the first catalyst that can maintain exceptional eCO2RR performance in the presence of both O2 and N2. Moreover, by using dilute CO2 as the feedstock, a 1 cm-2 working electrode coating with Bi-HHTP can continuously produce a 200 mM formic acid aqueous solution with a relative purity of 100% for at least 30 h in a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) electrolyzer. The product does not contain electrolytes, and such a highly concentrated and pure formic acid aqueous solution can be directly used as an electrolyte for formic acid fuel cells. Comprehensive studies revealed that such a high performance might be ascribed to the CO2 capture ability of the micropores on Bi-HHTP and the lower Gibbs free energy of formation of the key intermediate *OCHO on the open Bi sites.

This article reviews and examines catalyst engineering approaches aimed at enabling economically viable solutions. Formic acid (FA) has emerged as a promising candidate for hydrogen energy storage due to its favorable properties such as low toxicity, low flammability, and high volumetric hydrogen storage capacity under ambient conditions. Recent analyses have suggested that FA produced by electrochemical carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction reaction (eCO2RR) using low‐carbon electricity exhibits lower fugitive hydrogen (H2) emissions and global warming potential (GWP) during the H2 carrier production, storage and transportation processes compared to those of other alternatives like methanol, methylcyclohexane, and ammonia. eCO2RR to FA can enable industrially relevant current densities without the need for high pressures, high temperatures, or auxiliary hydrogen sources. However, the widespread implementation of eCO2RR to FA is hindered by the requirement for highly stable and selective catalysts. Herein, the aim is to explore and evaluate the potential of catalyst engineering in designing stable and selective nanostructured catalysts that can facilitate economically viable production of FA.

Abstract:Facile interconversion between CO2 and formate/formic acid (FA) is of broad interest in energy storage and conversion and neutral carbon emission. Historically, electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction to formate on Pd surfaces was limited to a narrow potential range positive of -0.25 V (vs RHE). Herein, a boron-doped Pd catalyst (Pd-B/C), with a high CO tolerance to facilitate dehydrogenation of FA/formate to CO2 is initially explored for electrochemical CO2 reduction over the potential range of -0.2 V to -1.0 V (vs RHE), with reference to Pd/C. The experimental results demonstrate that the faradaic efficiency for formate (eta(-)(HCOO)) reaches ca. 70% over 2 h of electrolysis in CO2-saturated 0.1 M KHCO3 at -0.5 V (vs RHE) on Pd-B/C, that is ca. 12 times as high as that on homemade or commercial Pd/C, leading to a formate concentration of ca. 234 mM mg(-1) Pd, or ca. 18 times as high as that on Pd/C, without optimization of the catalyst layer and the electrolyte. Furthermore, the competitive selectivity eta(-)(HCOO)/eta(CO) on Pd-B/C is always significantly higher than that on Pd/C despite a decreases of eta(-)(HCOO) and an increases of the CO faradaic efficiency (eta(CO)) at potentials negative of -0.5 V. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations on energetic aspects of CO2 reduction reaction on modeled Pd(111) surfaces with and without H-adsorbate reveal that the B-doping in the Pd subsurface favors the formation of the adsorbed HCOO*, an intermediate for the FA pathway, more than that of *COOH, an intermediate for the CO pathway. The present study confers Pd-B/C a unique dual functional catalyst for the HCOOH <-> CO2 interconversion.

Abstract:Despite a currently limited market size, formate is finding innovative applications as a hydrogen carrier and carbon source for upgrading processes to hydrocarbons and oxygenates. In this study, we combine the unique key features of In-based electrodes in the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (e.g., limited hydrogen evolution reaction activity, near-to-unity carbon selectivity toward formate) with the remarkable results obtained using nanostructured and highly defective quantum dot derived catalysts. After developing a scalable, safe and cheap InAs quantum dots synthesis based on a mild and nonpyrophoric reducing agent (i.e., NaCNBH3), a thorough voltammetric study allowed us to retrieve kinetic and thermodynamic data on their transformation into the actual catalytically active species (i.e., In0). In a flow electrolyzer operating under alkaline conditions at industrially relevant current densities, the catalyst achieved near-to-unity faradaic efficiency toward formate, with a remarkable production rate of ca. 1276 gFormate h–1 m–2 at ca. −0.73 V vs RHE (ηFormate = 0.61 V).

Electrocatalytic Conversion of CO2 to Formate at Low Overpotential by Electrolyte Engineering in Model Molecular Catalysis

Abstract:We report electrolyte engineering strategy for CO 2 reduction into formate with a model molecular catalyst, i.e. [Rh(bpy)(Cp*)Cl]Cl, by modifying the solvent (organic or aqueous), the proton source (H 2 O or acetic acid) and the electrode/solution interface with imidazolium‐ and pyrrolidinium‐based ionic liquids (ILs). Our experimental and theoretical DFT investigations suggest that π + ‐π interactions between the imidazolium‐based IL cation and the reduced bipyridine ligand of the catalyst improve the efficiency of the CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) by lowering the overpotential, while granting partial suppression of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). This allows tuning the selectivity towards formate, reaching for this catalyst an unprecedented faradaic efficiency (FE HCOO ‐) ≥ 90 % and energy efficiency = 66 % in acetonitrile solution. For the first time, relevant CO 2 conversion to formic acid/formate is reached at low overpotential (0.28 V) using a homogenous catalyst in acidic aqueous solution (pH = 3.8). These results open up a new strategy based on electrolyte engineering for enhancing carbon balance in CO 2 RR.
