Abstract:Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) solid electrolyte has been approved widely to perform a positive impact on improving the safety of all solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs). However, the poor ionic conductivity at room temperature limits its application seriously. Elemental doping is an important improvement strategy for LLZO. In this work, the doping site of Yb3+ in LLZO is identified by first-principles calculation for the first time and Li7La3-xYb x Zr2O12 (x = 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.15,0.30, LLYZO) are produced successfully by solid-state reaction route. Crystal structure, morphologies and ionic conduction of LLYZO ceramics are analyzed in detail. This doping strategy results in not only an inhibition of abnormal grain growth (AGG) by the generation of LiYbO2 second phase distributed in the grain boundary, but also a reduction in sintering time. Furthermore, The Yb3+ doping can enhance in the ion conductivity, attributed to the increase lattice constant and relative density. LLYZO (x = 0.15) ceramic sintered at 1200 oC for 15 h shows excellent performance with the highest conductivity of 2.53× 10‒4 S·cm‒1, the lowest activation energy of 0.294 eV and a relative density of 90.2%.
