Abstract:We prove that the moment-angle complex $\mathcal Z_K$ corresponding to a 3-dimensional simplicial sphere $K$ has the cohomology ring isomorphic to the cohomology ring of a connected sum of products of spheres if and only if either (a) $K$ is the boundary of a 4-dimensional cross-polytope, or (b) the one-skeleton of $K$ is a chordal graph, or (c) there are only two missing edges in $K$ and they form a chordless 4-cycle. For simplicial spheres $K$ of arbitrary dimension, we obtain a sufficient condition for the ring isomorphism $H^*(\mathcal Z_K)\cong H^*(M)$ where $M$ is a connected sum of products of spheres.

Abstract:In this paper we consider a class of connected closed G-manifolds with anon-empty finite fixed point set, each M of which is totally non-homologousto zero in M_G (or G-equivariantly formal), where G= Z_2. With thehelp of the equivariant index, we give an explicit description of theequivariant cohomology of such a G-manifold in terms of algebra, so that wecan obtain analytic descriptions of ring isomorphisms among equivariantcohomology rings of such G-manifolds, and a necessary and sufficientcondition that the equivariant cohomology rings of such two G-manifolds areisomorphic. This also leads us to analyze how many there are equivariantcohomology rings up to isomorphism for such G-manifolds in 2- and3-dimensional cases.

Abstract:We describe the basic cohomology ring of the canonical holomorphic foliation on a moment-angle manifold, LVMB-manifold or any complex manifold with a maximal holomorphic torus action. Namely, we show that the basic cohomology has a description similar to the cohomology ring of a complete simplicial toric variety due to Danilov and Jurkiewicz. This settles a question of Battaglia and Zaffran, who previously computed the basic Betti numbers for the canonical holomorphic foliation in the case of a shellable fan. Our proof uses an Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence argument; the key ingredient is the formality of the Cartan model for the torus action on a moment-angle manifold. We develop the concept of transverse equivalence as an important tool for studying smooth and holomorphic foliated manifolds. For an arbitrary complex manifold with a maximal torus action, we show that it is transverse equivalent to a moment-angle manifold and therefore has the same basic cohomology.

Moment-angle Complexes from Simplicial Posets

Abstract:We extend the construction of moment-angle complexes to simplicial posets by associating a certain Tm-space ZS to an arbitrary simplicial poset S on m vertices. Face rings ℤ[S] of simplicial posets generalise those of simplicial complexes, and give rise to new classes of Gorenstein and Cohen-Macaulay rings. Our primary motivation is to study the face rings ℤ[S] by topological methods. The space ZS has many important topological properties of the original moment-angle complex ZK associated to a simplicial complex K. In particular, we prove that the integral cohomology algebra of ZS is isomorphic to the Tor-algebra of the face ring ℤ[S]. This leads directly to a generalisation of Hochster’s theorem, expressing the algebraic Betti numbers of the ring ℤ[S] in terms of the homology of full subposets in S. Finally, we estimate the total amount of homology of ZS from below by proving the toral rank conjecture for the moment-angle complexes ZS.

Abstract:The motivation for this paper comes from the Halperin–Carlsson conjecture for (real) moment-angle complexes. We first give an algebraic combinatorics formula for the Möbius transform of an abstract simplicial complex K on [m]={1,…,m} in terms of the Betti numbers of the Stanley–Reisner face ring k(K) of K over a field k. We then employ a way of compressing K to provide the lower bound on the sum of those Betti numbers using our formula. Next we consider a class of generalized moment-angle complexes $\mathcal{Z}_{K}^{(\underline{\mathbb{ D}}, \underline{\mathbb{ S}})}$, including the moment-angle complex $\mathcal{Z}_{K}$ and the real moment-angle complex $\mathbb{R}\mathcal {Z}_{K}$ as special examples. We show that $H^{*}(\mathcal{Z}_{K}^{(\underline{\mathbb{ D}}, \underline{\mathbb{ S}})};\mathbf{k})$ has the same graded k-module structure as Tor k[v](k(K),k). Finally we show that the Halperin–Carlsson conjecture holds for $\mathcal{Z}_{K}$ (resp. $\mathbb{ R}\mathcal{Z}_{K}$) under the restriction of the natural T m -action on $\mathcal{Z}_{K}$ (resp. (ℤ2) m -action on $\mathbb{ R}\mathcal{Z}_{K}$).

Abstract:Moment-angle manifolds provide a wide class of examples of non-Kaehler compact complex manifolds. A complex moment-angle manifold Z is constructed via certain combinatorial data, called a complete simplicial fan. In the case of rational fans, the manifold Z is the total space of a holomorphic bundle over a toric variety with fibres compact complex tori. In general, a complex moment-angle manifold Z is equipped with a canonical holomorphic foliation F which is equivariant with respect to the (C*)^m-action. Examples of moment-angle manifolds include Hopf manifolds of Vaisman type, Calabi-Eckmann manifolds, and their deformations. We construct transversely Kaehler metrics on moment-angle manifolds, under some restriction on the combinatorial data. We prove that any Kaehler submanifold (or, more generally, a Fujiki class C subvariety) in such a moment-angle manifold is contained in a leaf of the foliation F. For a generic moment-angle manifold Z in its combinatorial class, we prove that all subvarieties are moment-angle manifolds of smaller dimension. This implies, in particular, that the algebraic dimension of Z is zero.

On homology concordance in contractible manifolds and two bridge links

Abstract:Let $\widehat{\mathcal{C}}_\mathbb{Z}$ be the group consists of manifold-knot pairs $(Y,K)$ modulo homology concordance, where $Y$ is an integer homology sphere bounding an integer homology ball, and let $\mathcal{C}_\mathbb{Z}$ be the subgroup consisting of pairs $(S^3,K)$. Dai-Hom-Stoffregen-Truong show that the quotient group ${\widehat{\mathcal{C}}_\mathbb{Z}}/{\mathcal{C}_\mathbb{Z}}$ admits a $\mathbb{Z}^\infty$-summand. In this paper, we improve the result by showing that there exists a family $\{(Y,K_m)\}_{m>1 }$ generating the $\mathbb{Z}^\infty$-summand where $Y$ is the boundary of a smooth contractible $4$-manifold. In fact, we give a $\mathbb{Z}$-count of such families. The examples are constructed using a family of knots obtained by blowing down a component of a two-bridge link. They are studied in Jonathan Hales's thesis. Using the algorithm due to Ozsváth, Szabó and Hales we give a classification of the knot Floer homology of a larger family of such knots, that might be of independent interest.

Abstract:In this note we describe basic geometric properties of p-harmonic forms and p-coclosed forms and use them to reprove vanishing theorems of Pansu and new injectivity theorems for the Lp -cohomology of simply connected, pinched negatively curved manifolds. We also provide a partial resolution of a conjecture of Gromov on the vanishing of Lp -cohomology on symmetric spaces.

Abstract:We develop a general homological approach to presentations of connected graded associative algebras, and apply it to the loop homology of moment-angle complexes $Z_K$ that correspond to flag simplicial complexes $K$. For arbitrary coefficient ring, we describe generators of the Pontryagin algebra $H_*(\Omega Z_K)$ and defining relations between them. We prove that such moment-angle complexes are coformal over $\mathbb{Q},$ give a necessary condition for rational formality, and compute their homotopy groups in terms of homotopy groups of spheres.

Abstract:The semi-classical data attached to stacks of algebroids in the sense of Kashiwara and Kontsevich are Maurer-Cartan elements on complex manifolds, which we call extended Poisson structures as they generalize holomorphic Poisson structures. A canonical Lie algebroid is associated to each Maurer-Cartan element. We study the geometry underlying these Maurer-Cartan elements in the light of Lie algebroid theory. In particular, we extend Lichnerowicz-Poisson cohomology and Koszul-Brylinski homology to the realm of extended Poisson manifolds; we establish a sufficient criterion for these to be finite dimensional; we describe how homology and cohomology are related through the Evens-Lu-Weinstein duality module; and we describe a duality on Koszul-Brylinski homology, which generalizes the Serre duality of Dolbeault cohomology.

On the rank of the double cohomology of moment-angle complexes

Abstract:In [6], the authors construct a cochain complex $C\!H^*(\mathcal{Z}_{\mathcal{K}})$ on the cohomology of a moment-angle complex $\mathcal{Z}_{\mathcal{K}}$ and call the resulting cohomology the double cohomology, $H\!H^*(\mathcal{Z}_{\mathcal{K}})$. In this paper, we study the change of rank in double cohomology after gluing an $n$-simplex to a simplicial complex $\mathcal{K}$ in certain conditions. As an application, we give a positive answer to an open problem in [6]: For any even integer $r$, there always exists a simlicial complex $\mathcal{K}$ such that $\operatorname{rank} H\!H^*(\mathcal{Z}_{\mathcal{K}})=r$.

Denote by $P(m,\nu)=P(\mathbb S^m,\mathbb CG(\nu))$ the generalized Dold manifold $\mathbb S^m\times \mathbb CG(\nu)/\langle \theta\rangle $ where $\theta=\alpha\times \sigma$ with $\alpha:\mathbb S^m\to \mathbb S^m$ being the antipodal map and $\sigma:\mathbb CG(\nu)\to \mathbb CG(\nu)$, the complex conjugation. The manifold $P(m,\nu)$ has the structure of a smooth $\mathbb CG(\nu)$-bundle over the real projective space $\mathbb RP^m.$ We determine the additive structure of $H^*(P(m,\nu);R)$ when $R=\mathbb Z$ and its ring structure when $R$ is a commutative ring in which $2$ is invertible. As an application, we determine the additive structure of $K(P(m,\nu))$ almost completely and also obtain partial results on its ring structure. The results for the singular homology are obtained for generalized Dold spaces $P(S,X)=S\times X/\langle \theta\rangle$, where $\theta=\alpha\times \sigma$, $\alpha:S\to S$ is a fixed point free involution and $\sigma:X\to X$ is an involution with $\mathrm{Fix}(\sigma)\ne \emptyset,$ for a much wider class of spaces $S$ and $X$.

Cohomology operations for moment-angle complexes and resolutions of Stanley-Reisner rings

Abstract:A fundamental result in toric topology identifies the cohomology ring of the moment-angle complex $\mathcal{Z}_K$ associated to a simplicial complex $K$ with the Koszul homology of the Stanley--Reisner ring of $K$. By studying cohomology operations induced by the standard torus action on the moment-angle complex, we extend this to a topological interpretation of the minimal free resolution of the Stanley-Reisner ring. The exterior algebra module structure in cohomology induced by the torus action recovers the linear part of the minimal free resolution, and we show that higher cohomology operations induced by the action (in the sense of Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson) can be assembled into an explicit differential on the resolution. Describing these operations in terms of Hochster's formula, we recover and extend a result due to Katthän. We then apply all of this to study the equivariant formality of torus actions on moment-angle complexes. For these spaces, we obtain complete algebraic and combinatorial characterisations of which subtori of the naturally acting torus act equivariantly formally.

Abstract:The quantum cohomology algebra of the (full) flag manifold is a fundamental example in quantum cohomology theory, with connections to combinatorics, algebraic geometry, and integrable systems. Using a differential geometric approach, we give an algorithm for computing the multiplicative structure constants of this algebra (the 3-point genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants). The algorithm involves a Grobner basis calculation and the solution by quadrature of a system of differential equations. In particular we obtain quantum Schubert polynomials in a natural fashion.

Abstract:The (small) quantum cohomology ring of a flag manifold F encodes enumerative geometry of rational curves on F. We give a proof of the presentation of the ring and of a quantum Giambelli formula, which is more direct and geometric than the previously known proof.
