Abstract:PurposeThe effect of the stacking sequence and arrangement of layers in the use of carbon/epoxy and glass/epoxy are studied on the vibration behavior of a rotating hybrid composite shaft.MethodsIn this paper, a hollow fiber-based hybrid composite shaft (HCS) with continuously extended fiber reinforcement consisting of carbon/epoxy and glass/epoxy layers with a symmetrical stacking sequence is modeled and built using the filament winding method. Strain potential energy is computed using Euler Bernoulli's theory and determining longitudinal stiffness, bending stiffness, torsional stiffness, and axial–torsional coupling. By using Hamilton's principle, the governing equations of motion are derived. The multiple scales method is used to obtain the approximate analytical answer of the HCS motion equations.ResultsBy solving the motion equations of the system, considering both the unbalanced mass of the shaft and disk, as well as the unbalanced mass of the shaft, natural frequencies are extracted for the 28-layer HCS with a centrally located disk and elastic bearings. The natural frequencies of analytical and numerical solutions of HCS with a centrally located disk and flexible supports are compared and validated. Then the natural frequencies of the non-rotating HCS are obtained using the modal analysis test and compared with the natural frequencies of the numerical solution, and the results are verified. The first three natural frequencies of the HCS with one disk supported by two elastic bearings are presented for various stacking sequences.ConclusionsThe maximum natural frequencies of the rotating HCS with a disk positioned centrally on the shaft supported by two elastic bearings, occurred in an asymmetrical stacking sequence where eight layers of carbon/epoxy constituted the outermost layers of the HCS. Given the high torsional and bending stiffness of the carbon/epoxy, it is preferable to utilize it in the outer layers of the HCS.
