Abstract:Recently, Newman and Swift[T. J. Newman and M. R. Swift, Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 2261 (1997)] made an interesting suggestion that the strong-coupling exponents of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation may not be universal, but rather depend on the precise form of the noise distribution. We show here that the decrease of surface roughness exponents they observed can be attributed to a percolative effect.

Abstract:We consider the problem of testing two hypotheses of quantum operations in a setting of many uses where an arbitrary prior probability distribution is given. The Chernoff exponent for quantum operations is investigated to track the minimal average error probability of discriminating two quantum operations asymptotically. We answer the question, “When is the Chernoff exponent for quantum operations finite?” We show that either two quantum operations can be perfectly distinguished with finite uses, or the minimal discrimination error decays exponentially with respect to the number of uses asymptotically. That is, the Chernoff exponent is finite if and only if the quantum operations can not be perfectly distinguished with finite uses. This rules out the possibility of super-exponential decay of error probability. Upper bounds of the Chernoff exponent for quantum operations are provided.

Abstract:In a recent Comment, Kolf et al. (cond-mat/0503669) state that our analysis of the Fano resonance for Anderson impurity systems [Luo et al., Phys. Rev. Lett 92, 256602 (2004)] is incorrect. Here we want to point out that their comments are not based on firm physical results and their criticisms are unjustified and invalid.

Abstract:Motivated by the recent numerical studies on the Chalker-Coddington network model that found a larger-thanexpected critical exponent of the localization length characterizing the integer quantum Hall plateau transitions, we revisited the exponent calculation in the continuum model and in the lattice model, both projected to the lowest Landau level or subband. Combining scaling results with or without the corrections of an irrelevant length scale, we obtain nu = 2.48 +/- 0.02, which is larger but still consistent with the earlier results in the two models, unlike what was found recently in the network model. The scaling of the total number of conducting states, as determined by the Chern number calculation, is accompanied by an effective irrelevant length scale exponent y = 4.3 in the lattice model, indicating that the irrelevant perturbations are insignificant in the topology number calculation.

Abstract:Masillo [1] commented on our manuscript [2] "Observation of a Fast Evolution in a Parity-time-symmetric System", pointing out a contradiction of our work with Ref.[3]. In this reply, we pointed out there is no disagreement between Masillo's comment and our work in Ref. [2]. The efficiency cost pointed out in Ref.\cite{masillo} exists, namely to obtain the PT-symmetric hamiltonian evolution, one has to make a measurement on the auxiliary qubit and the auxiliary qubit is at state $|0\ket$ only probabilistically. This is reflected in the amplitude of the spectrum in the NMR quantum simulation. As a result, we made a small modification in a new version of the Ref. [2], and Fig. 2 of Ref.[2] has been replaced by spectra of two different $\alpha$'s in order to illustrate this fact.
