Abstract:In this paper, we study the quantum Zeno effect (QZE) and quantum anti-Zeno effect (QAZE) of a two-level system interacting with its environment. By applying a numerically exact method based on the matrix product state, the previous picture for the QZE and QAZE has to be modified: For the physical bath initial state, the QZE and QAZE transition with the increase of the measurement interval is really absent at the weak coupling, consistent with the previous perturbation results, but reappears at the strong coupling. We also find that QZE and QAZE transitions always happen for the mostly used bare bath initial state. Within a more realistic measurement scheme where only the qubit is measured, the above picture for the bare bath initial state is qualitatively unchanged, but a faster decay rate is observed in the intermediate measurement interval.

Abstract:We extend the quantum geometric tensor from the state space to the operator level,and investigate its properties like the additivity for factorizable models and the splitting of two kinds contributions for the case of stationary reference states. This operator-quantum-geometric tensor (OQGT) is shown to reflect the sensitivity of unitary operations against perturbations of multi parameters. General results for the cases of time evolutions with given stationary reference states are obtained. By this approach, we get exact results for the rotated XY models, and show relations between the OQGT and quantum criticality.

Abstract:The time evolution of some quantum states can be slowed down or even stopped under frequent measurements. This is the usual quantum Zeno effect. Here, we report an operator quantum Zeno effect, in which the evolution of some physical observables is slowed down through measurements even though the quantum state changes randomly with time. Based on the operator quantum Zeno effect, we show how we can protect quantum information from decoherence with two-qubit measurements, realizable with noisy two-qubit interactions.

Entropic Quantum Central Limit Theorem and Quantum Inverse Sumset Theorem

Abstract:We establish an entropic, quantum central limit theorem and quantum inverse sumset theorem in discrete-variable quantum systems describing qudits or qubits. Both results are enabled by using our recently-discovered quantum convolution. We show that the exponential rate of convergence of the entropic central limit theorem is bounded by the magic gap. We also establish an ``quantum, entropic inverse sumset theorem,'' by introducing a quantum doubling constant. Furthermore, we introduce a ``quantum Ruzsa divergence'', and we pose a conjecture called ``convolutional strong subaddivity,'' which leads to the triangle inequality for the quantum Ruzsa divergence. A byproduct of this work is a magic measure to quantify the nonstabilizer nature of a state, based on the quantum Ruzsa divergence.

Quantum advantage and lower bounds in parallel query complexity

Abstract:It is well known that quantum, randomized and deterministic (sequential) query complexities are polynomially related for total boolean functions. We find that significantly larger separations between the parallel generalizations of these measures are possible. In particular, (1) We employ the cheatsheet framework to obtain an unbounded parallel quantum query advantage over its randomized analogue for a total function, falsifying a conjecture of Jeffery et al. 2017 (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1309.6116" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1309.6116">arXiv:1309.6116</a>). (2) We strengthen (1) by constructing a total function which exhibits an unbounded parallel quantum query advantage despite having no sequential advantage, suggesting that genuine quantum advantage could occur entirely due to parallelism. (3) We construct a total function that exhibits a polynomial separation between 2-round quantum and randomized query complexities, contrasting a result of Montanaro in 2010 (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1001.0018" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1001.0018">arXiv:1001.0018</a>) that there is at most a constant separation for 1-round (nonadaptive) algorithms. (4) We develop a new technique for deriving parallel quantum lower bounds from sequential upper bounds. We employ this technique to give lower bounds for Boolean symmetric functions and read-once formulas, ruling out large parallel query advantages for them. We also provide separations between randomized and deterministic parallel query complexities analogous to items (1)-(3).

Abstract:We establish a generalized quantum asymptotic equipartition property (AEP) beyond the i.i.d. framework where the random samples are drawn from two sets of quantum states. In particular, under suitable assumptions on the sets, we prove that all operationally relevant divergences converge to the quantum relative entropy between the sets. More specifically, both the smoothed min- and max-relative entropy approach the regularized relative entropy between the sets. Notably, the asymptotic limit has explicit convergence guarantees and can be efficiently estimated through convex optimization programs, despite the regularization, provided that the sets have efficient descriptions. We give four applications of this result: (i) The generalized AEP directly implies a new generalized quantum Stein's lemma for conducting quantum hypothesis testing between two sets of quantum states. (ii) We introduce a quantum version of adversarial hypothesis testing where the tester plays against an adversary who possesses internal quantum memory and controls the quantum device and show that the optimal error exponent is precisely characterized by a new notion of quantum channel divergence, named the minimum output channel divergence. (iii) We derive a relative entropy accumulation theorem stating that the smoothed min-relative entropy between two sequential processes of quantum channels can be lower bounded by the sum of the regularized minimum output channel divergences. (iv) We apply our generalized AEP to quantum resource theories and provide improved and efficient bounds for entanglement distillation, magic state distillation, and the entanglement cost of quantum states and channels. At a technical level, we establish new additivity and chain rule properties for the measured relative entropy which we expect will have more applications.

Abstract:We present a systematic investigation of antilinear superoperators and their applications in studying open quantum systems, particularly focusing on quantum geometric invariance, entanglement distribution, and symmetry. We study several classes of antilinear superoperators, including antilinear quantum channels, antilinearly unital superoperators, antiunitary superoperators, and generalized -conjugation. Using the Bloch representation, we present a systematic investigation of quantum geometric transformations in higher-dimensional quantum systems. By choosing different generalized -conjugations, we obtain various metrics for the space of Bloch space-time vectors, including the Euclidean and Minkowskian metrics. Utilizing these geometric structures, we then investigate the entanglement distribution over a multipartite system constrained by quantum geometric invariance. The strong and weak antilinear superoperator symmetries of the open quantum system are also discussed. Additionally, Kramers' degeneracy and conserved quantities are examined in detail.

Abstract:This work generalizes Shor’s algorithm into quasi-Shor algorithms by replacing the modular exponentiation with alternative unitary operations. By using the quantum circuits to generate Bell states as the unitary operations, a specific example called the Bell–Shor algorithm was constructed. The system density matrices in the quantum circuits with four distinct input states were calculated in ideal conditions and illustrated through chromatic graphs to witness the evolution of quantum states in the quantum circuits. For the real part of the density matrices, it was revealed that the number of zero elements dramatically declined to only a few points after the operation of the inverse quantum Fourier transformation. Based on this property, a protocol constituting a pair of error metrics Γa and Γb is proposed for the global benchmarking of universal quantum processors by looking at the locations of the zero entries and normalized average values of non-zero entries. The protocol has polynomial resource requirements with the scale of the quantum processor. The Bell–Shor algorithm is capable of being a feasible setting for the global benchmarking of universal quantum processors.

Generalized Rényi entropy accumulation theorem and generalized quantum probability estimation

Abstract:The entropy accumulation theorem, and its subsequent generalized version, is a powerful tool in the security analysis of many device-dependent and device-independent cryptography protocols. However, it has the drawback that the finite-size bounds it yields are not necessarily optimal, and furthermore it relies on the construction of an affine min-tradeoff function, which can often be challenging to construct optimally in practice. In this work, we address both of these challenges simultaneously by deriving a new entropy accumulation bound. Our bound yields significantly better finite-size performance, and can be computed as an intuitively interpretable convex optimization, without any specification of affine min-tradeoff functions. Furthermore, it can be applied directly at the level of Rényi entropies if desired, yielding fully-Rényi security proofs. Our proof techniques are based on elaborating on a connection between entropy accumulation and the frameworks of quantum probability estimation or $f$-weighted Rényi entropies, and in the process we obtain some new results with respect to those frameworks as well. In particular, those findings imply that our bounds apply to prepare-and-measure protocols without the virtual tomography procedures or repetition-rate restrictions previously required for entropy accumulation.

Efficient Verification of Quantum Gates with Local Operations

Abstract:Efficient verification of the functioning of quantum devices is a key to the development of quantum technologies, but is a daunting task as the system size increases. Here we propose a simple and general framework for verifying unitary transformations that can be applied to both individual quantum gates and gate sets, including quantum circuits. This framework enables efficient verification of many important unitary transformations, including but not limited to all bipartite unitaries, Clifford unitaries, generalized controlled-$Z$ gates, generalized controlled-not gates, the controlled-swap gate, and permutation transformations. For all these unitaries, the sample complexity increases at most linearly with the system size and is often independent of the system size. Moreover, little overhead is incurred even if one can only prepare Pauli eigenstates and perform local measurements. Our approach is applicable in many scenarios in which randomized benchmarking (RB) does not apply and is thus instrumental to quantum computation and many other applications in quantum information processing.

Abstract:We analyze a class of quantum operations based on a geometrical representation of d-level quantum system (or qudit for short). A sufficient and necessary condition of complete positivity, expressed in terms of the quantum Fourier transform, is found for this class of operations. A more general class of operations on qudits is also considered and its completely positive condition is reduced to the well-known semi-definite programming problem.

Abstract:We extend three related results from the analysis of influences of Boolean functions to the quantum setting, namely the KKL theorem, Friedgut's Junta theorem and Talagrand's variance inequality for geometric influences. Our results are derived by a joint use of recently studied hypercontractivity and gradient estimates. These generic tools also allow us to derive generalizations of these results in a general von Neumann algebraic setting beyond the case of the quantum hypercube, including examples in infinite dimensions relevant to quantum information theory such as continuous variables quantum systems. Finally, we comment on the implications of our results as regards to noncommutative extensions of isoperimetric type inequalities, quantum circuit complexity lower bounds and the learnability of quantum observables.

Operating with Quantum Integers: an Efficient 'Multiples of' Oracle

Abstract:Quantum algorithms are a very promising field. However, creating and manipulating these kind of algorithms is a very complex task, specially for software engineers used to work at higher abstraction levels. The work presented here is part of a broader research focused on providing operations of a higher abstraction level to manipulate integers codified as a superposition. These operations are designed to be composable and efficient, so quantum software developers can reuse them to create more complex solutions. Specifically, in this paper we present a 'multiples of' operation. To validate this operation we show several examples of quantum circuits and their simulations, including its composition possibilities. A theoretical analysis proves that both the complexity of the required classical calculations and the depth of the circuit scale linearly with the number of qubits. Hence, the 'multiples of' oracle is efficient in terms of complexity and depth. Finally, an empirical study of the circuit depth is conducted to further reinforce the theoretical analysis.

Unified analysis of non-Markovian open quantum systems in Gaussian environment using superoperator formalism

Abstract:We present perturbative error bounds for the non-Markovian dynamics of observables in open quantum systems interacting with Gaussian environments, governed by general Liouville dynamics. This extends the work of [Mascherpa et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 118, 100401, 2017], which demonstrated qualitatively tighter bounds over the standard Grönwall-type analysis, where the joint system-environment evolution is unitary. Our results apply to systems with both bosonic and fermionic environments. Our approach utilizes a superoperator formalism, which avoids the need for formal coherent state path integral calculations, or the dilation of Lindblad dynamics into an equivalent unitary framework with infinitely many degrees of freedom. This enables a unified treatment of a wide range of open quantum systems. These findings provide a solid theoretical basis for various recently developed pseudomode methods in simulating open quantum system dynamics.
