Abstract:Gathering data through measurements is at the basis of every experimental science. Ideally, measurements should be repeatable and, when extracting only coarse-grained data, they should allow the experimenter to retrieve the finer details at a later time. However, in practice most measurements appear to be noisy. Here we postulate that, despite the imperfections observed in real life experiments, there exists a fundamental level where all measurements are ideal. Combined with the requirement that ideal measurements remain so when coarse-grained or applied in parallel on spacelike separated systems, our postulate places a powerful constraint on the amount of nonlocality and contextuality that can be found in an arbitrary physical theory, bringing down the violation of Bell and Kocher-Specker inequalities near to its quantum value. In addition, it provides a new compelling motivation for the principles of Local Orthogonality and Consistent Exclusivity, recently proposed for the characterization of the quantum set of probability distributions.

Abstract:Obtaining information from a quantum system through a measurement typically disturbs its state. The postmeasurement states for a given measurement, however, are not unique and highly rely on the chosen measurement model, complicating the puzzle of information-disturbance. Two distinct questions are then in order. Firstly, what is the minimum disturbance a measurement may induce? Secondly, when a fixed disturbance occurs, how informative is the possible measurement in the best-case scenario? Here, we propose various approaches to tackle these questions and provide explicit solutions for the set of unbiased binary qubit measurements and postmeasurement state spaces that are equivalent to the image of a unital qubit channel. In particular, we show there are different tradeoff relations between the sharpness of this measurement and the average fidelity of the premeasurement and postmeasurement state spaces as well as the sharpness and quantum resources preserved in the postmeasurement states in terms of coherence and discord-like correlation once the measurement is applied locally.

Abstract:Tsirelson's original inequality for the precession protocol, first introduced for the harmonic oscillator but applicable to all uniformly-precessing systems, serves as a monopartite test of quantumness. Given that the system is undergoing a uniform precession, the signs of the positions of a classical oscillator must satisfy that inequality, which is violated by certain quantum states. We consider this inequality for measurements with finitely many outcomes in a theory-independent manner. We derive a general bound which depends only on the minimum positive and negative values of the spectrum of the observable. Given any such two values, we construct a quantum observable that saturates this bound. A notable example is the angular momentum of a spin-$3/2$ particle. We also relate our findings to the recently-introduced notion of constrained conditional probabilities.

Symmetric Informationally Complete Measurements Identify the Irreducible Difference between Classical and Quantum Systems

Abstract:We describe a general procedure for associating a minimal informationally-complete quantum measurement (or MIC) and a set of linearly independent post-measurement quantum states with a purely probabilistic representation of the Born Rule. Such representations are motivated by QBism, where the Born Rule is understood as a consistency condition between probabilities assigned to the outcomes of one experiment in terms of the probabilities assigned to the outcomes of other experiments. In this setting, the difference between quantum and classical physics is the way their physical assumptions augment bare probability theory: Classical physics corresponds to a trivial augmentation -- one just applies the Law of Total Probability (LTP) between the scenarios -- while quantum theory makes use of the Born Rule expressed in one or another of the forms of our general procedure. To mark the irreducible difference between quantum and classical, one should seek the representations that minimize the disparity between the expressions. We prove that the representation of the Born Rule obtained from a symmetric informationally-complete measurement (or SIC) minimizes this distinction in at least two senses -- the first to do with unitarily invariant distance measures between the rules, and the second to do with available volume in a reference probability simplex (roughly speaking a new kind of uncertainty principle). Both of these arise from a significant majorization result. This work complements recent studies in quantum computation where the deviation of the Born Rule from the LTP is measured in terms of negativity of Wigner functions.

Abstract:Quantum mechanics, in its orthodox version, imposes severe limits on what can be known, or even said, about the condition of a quantum system between two observations. A relatively new approach, based on so-called "weak measurements", suggests that such forbidden knowledge can be gained by studying the system's response to an inaccurate weakly perturbing measuring device. It goes further to propose revising the whole concept of physics variables, and offers various examples of counterintuitive quantum behaviour. Both views go to the very heart of quantum theory, and yet are rarely compared directly. A new technique must either transcend the orthodox limits, or just prove that these limits are indeed necessary. We study both possibilities, and find for the orthodoxy.

Abstract:Fluctuation theorems and the second law of thermodynamics are powerful relations constraining the behavior of out-of-equilibrium systems. While there exist generalizations of these relations to feedback controlled quantum systems, their applicability is limited, in particular when considering strong and continuous measurements. In this letter, we overcome this shortcoming by deriving a novel fluctuation theorem, and the associated second law of information thermodynamics, which remain applicable in arbitrary feedback control scenarios. In our second law, the entropy production is bounded by the coarse-grained entropy production which is inferrable from the measurement outcomes, an experimentally accessible quantity that does not diverge even under strong continuous measurements. We illustrate our results by a qubit undergoing discrete and continuous measurement, where our approach provides a useful bound on the entropy production for all measurement strengths.

Quantum state testing with restricted measurements

Abstract:We study quantum state testing where the goal is to test whether $\rho=\rho_0\in\mathbb{C}^{d\times d}$ or $\|\rho-\rho_0\|_1>\varepsilon$, given $n$ copies of $\rho$ and a known state description $\rho_0$. In practice, not all measurements can be easily applied, even using unentangled measurements where each copy is measured separately. We develop an information-theoretic framework that yields unified copy complexity lower bounds for restricted families of non-adaptive measurements through a novel measurement information channel. Using this framework, we obtain the optimal bounds for a natural family of $k$-outcome measurements with fixed and randomized schemes. We demonstrate a separation between these two schemes, showing the power of randomized measurement schemes over fixed ones. Previously, little was known for fixed schemes, and tight bounds were only known for randomized schemes with $k\ge d$ and Pauli observables, a special class of 2-outcome measurements. Our work bridges this gap in the literature.

Abstract:Measurements take a singular role in quantum theory. While they are often idealized as an instantaneous process, this is in conflict with all other physical processes in nature. In this Letter, we adopt a standpoint where the interaction with an environment is a crucial ingredient for the occurrence of a measurement. Within this framework, we derive lower bounds on the time needed for a measurement to occur. Our bound scales proportionally to the change in entropy of the measured system, and decreases as the number of of possible measurement outcomes or the interaction strength driving the measurement increases. We evaluate our bound in two examples where the environment is modelled by bosonic modes and the measurement apparatus is modelled by spins or bosons.

Abstract:Quantum 8, 1235 (2024). https://doi.org/10.22331/q-2024-01-25-1235 We construct a resource theory of for finite-dimensional positive operator-valued measures (POVMs), where the operations are given by quantum preprocessing channels and convex mixtures with POVMs whose elements are all proportional to the identity operator. As required for a sound resource theory of sharpness, we show that our theory has maximal (i.e., sharp) elements, which are all equivalent, and coincide with the set of POVMs that admit a repeatable measurement. Among the maximal elements, conventional non-degenerate observables are characterized as the canonical ones. More generally, we quantify sharpness in terms of a class of monotones, expressed as the EPR–Ozawa correlations between the given POVM and an arbitrary reference POVM. We show that one POVM can be transformed into another by means of a sharpness-non-increasing operation if and only if the former is sharper than the latter with respect to all monotones. Thus, our resource theory of sharpness is , in the sense that the comparison of all monotones provides a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a sharpness-non-increasing operation between two POVMs, and , in the sense that all monotones are in principle experimentally accessible.

Abstract:This paper addresses the question whether a variant of a modal interpretation is conceivable that could accommodate property ascriptions associated with nonorthogonal resolutions of the unity and nonorthogonal families of relative states as they occur in imperfect or genuinely unsharp measurements. I will review a recent formulation of the quantum measurement problem in the form of an insolubility theorem that incorporates the case of unsharp object observables as well as certain types of unsharp pointers. In addition to demonstrating the necessity for some modification of quantum mechanics, this allows me to specify the logical position of the modal interpretations as a resolution to the measurement problem and to indicate why I think their current versions are not yet capable of dealing adequately with unsharp quantum observables. The technical tools that will have been explained along this line of reasoning will finally serve to make precise the notion of (unsharp) value ascription that I would find desirable for a modal interpretation to ascertain.
Universal bounds for quantum metrology in the presence of correlated noise

Abstract:We derive fundamental bounds for general quantum metrological models involving both temporal or spatial correlations (mathematically described by quantum combs), which may be effectively computed in the limit of a large number of probes or sensing channels involved. Although the bounds are not guaranteed to be tight in general, their tightness may be systematically increased by increasing numerical complexity of the procedure. Interestingly, this approach yields bounds tighter than the state of the art also for uncorrelated channels. We apply the bound to study the limits for the most general adaptive phase estimation models in the presence of temporally correlated dephasing. We consider dephasing both parallel (no Heisenberg scaling) and perpendicular (Heisenberg scaling possible) to the signal. In the former case our new bounds show that negative correlations are beneficial, for the latter we show evidence that the bounds are tight.

Abstract:Throughout its history, the theory of quantum error correction has heavily benefited from translating classical concepts into the quantum setting. In particular, classical notions of weight enumerators, which relate to the performance of an error-correcting code, and MacWilliams' identity, which helps to compute enumerators, have been generalized to the quantum case. In this work, we establish a distinct relationship between the theoretical machinery of quantum weight enumerators and a seemingly unrelated physics experiment: we prove that Rains' quantum shadow enumerators - a powerful mathematical tool - arise as probabilities of observing fixed numbers of triplets in a Bell sampling experiment. This insight allows us to develop here a rigorous framework for the direct measurement of quantum weight enumerators, thus enabling experimental and theoretical studies of the entanglement structure of any quantum error-correcting code or state under investigation. On top of that, we derive concrete sample complexity bounds and physically-motivated robustness guarantees against unavoidable experimental imperfections. Finally, we experimentally demonstrate the possibility of directly measuring weight enumerators on a trapped-ion quantum computer. Our experimental findings are in good agreement with theoretical predictions and illuminate how entanglement theory and quantum error correction can cross-fertilize each other once Bell sampling experiments are combined with the theoretical machinery of quantum weight enumerators.

Abstract:We study theoretically how local measurements perfomed on critical quantum ground states affect long-distance correlations. These states are highly entangled and feature algebraic correlations between local observables. As a consequence, local measurements can have highly nonlocal effects. Our focus is on Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) ground states, a continuous family of critical states in one dimension whose structure is parameterized by a Luttinger parameter $K$. We show that arbitrarily weak local measurements, performed over extended regions of space, can conspire to drive transitions in long-distance correlations. Conditioning first on a particular measurement outcome we show that there is a transition in the character of the post-measurement quantum state for $K<1$, and highlight a formal analogy with the effect of a static impurity on transport through a TLL. To investigate the full ensemble of measurement outcomes we consider averages of physical quantities which are necessarily nonlinear in the system density matrix. We show how their behavior can be understood within a replica field theory, and for the measurements that we consider we find that the symmetry of the theory under exchange of replicas is broken for $K<1/2$. A well-known barrier to experimentally observing the collective effects of multiple measurements has been the need to post-select on random outcomes. Here we resolve this problem by introducing cross-correlations between experimental measurement results and classical simulations, which act as resource-efficient probes of the transition. The phenomena we discuss are, moreover, robust to local decoherence.

Abstract:In quantum optics, measurement statistics -- for example, photocounting statistics -- are considered nonclassical if they cannot be reproduced with statistical mixtures of classical radiation fields. We have formulated a necessary and sufficient condition for such nonclassicality. This condition is given by a set of inequalities that tightly bound the convex set of probabilities associated with classical electromagnetic radiation. Analytical forms for full sets and subsets of these inequalities are obtained for important cases of realistic photocounting measurements and unbalanced homodyne detection. As an example, we consider photocounting statistics of phase-squeezed coherent states. Contrary to a common intuition, the analysis developed here reveals distinct nonclassical properties of these statistics that can be experimentally corroborated with minimal resources.

Tight concentration inequalities for quantum adversarial setups exploiting permutation symmetry

Abstract:We developed new concentration inequalities for a quantum state on an $N$-qudit system or measurement outcomes on it that apply to an adversarial setup, where an adversary prepares the quantum state. Our one-sided concentration inequalities for a quantum state require the $N$-qudit system to be permutation invariant and are thus de-Finetti type, but they are tighter than the one previously obtained. We show that the bound can further be tightened if each qudit system has an additional symmetry. Furthermore, our concentration inequality for the outcomes of independent and identical measurements on an $N$-qudit quantum system has no assumption on the adversarial quantum state and is much tighter than the conventional one obtained through Azuma's inequality. We numerically demonstrate the tightness of our bounds in simple quantum information processing tasks.

Quantum Non-Demolition Measurements and Leggett-Garg inequality

Abstract:Quantum non-demolition measurements define a non-invasive protocol to extract information from a quantum system that we aim to monitor. They exploit an additional quantum system that is sequentially coupled to the system. Eventually, by measuring the additional system, we can extract information about temporal correlations developed by the quantum system dynamics with respect to a given observable. This protocol leads to a quasi-probability distribution for the measured observable outcomes, which can be negative. We prove that the presence of these negative regions is a necessary and sufficient condition for the violation of macrorealism. This is a much stronger condition than the violation of the Leggett-Garg inequalities commonly used for the same task. Indeed, we show that there are situations in which Leggett-Garg inequalities are satisfied even if the macrorealism condition is violated. As a consequence, the quantum non-demolition protocol is a privileged tool to identify with certainty the quantum behavior of a system. As such, it has a vast number of applications to different fields from the certification of quantumness to the study of the quantum-to-classical transition.
