Abstract:This paper analyzed the characterization and degradation of O-ring seals in gas-insulation substation (GIS) application. Two kinds of commercial ethylene-propylene- diene monomer rubber (EPDM) O-ring samples were used in the two-factor accelerated aging test of thermal and compression. The evolution of compression set (εt) and Shore A hardness (ht) were studied. The results show that, ht is well modeled by linear regression, and εt is well modeled by both exponential function model and power function model. The derivation of εt decreases with time, indicating a decreasing aging rate of EPDM O-rings under constant aging conditions. This is inconsistent with the conclusion of previous studies that the aging rate, characterized by oxygen consumption rate, should be constant when the aging temperature is constant. To give a reasonable explanation, the residual compression ratio (δt) was defined to study the remaining utility of the compressive aging factor during the aging of O-rings. Then, εt was normalized by δt to derive the compression set at unit residual compression ratio (∈t ). It was found that ∈t changed linearly with time. The derivation of ∈t was derived as a new index to analyze the aging rate, and it was basically unchanged. The findings indicate that the obvious decline of the compressive aging factor in the two-factor aging test is the main reason for the decrease of aging rate.
