Abstract:One of the outstanding challenges in nanotechnology is how to assemble individual nano-objects into macroscopic architectures while preserving their extraordinary properties. For example, the one-dimensional character of electrons in individual carbon nanotubes leads to extremely anisotropic transport, optical, and magnetic phenomena, but their macroscopic manifestations have been limited. Here, we describe novel methods for preparing macroscopic films, sheets, and fibers of highly aligned carbon nanotubes and their applications to basic and applied studies. Sufficiently thick films act as ideal terahertz polarizers, and appropriately doped films operate as polarization-sensitive, flexible, powerless, and ultrabroadband photodetectors. Together with recently developed chirality enrichment methods, these developments will allow us to probe, understand, and control dynamic conductivities of interacting one-dimensional electrons in macroscopic single crystals of single-chirality single-wall carbon nanotubes.

Abstract:Recent advances in flexible magnetic film technologies have attracted wide attentions, which provides both magnetizable and flexible properties for advanced sensor and actuator integration applications. The successful performance relies on the materials, preparation technologies involving film-forming and magnetization, and characterization technologies involving microstructure, mechanical and magnetic properties. This study focused on the most up-to-date materials and key technologies. Details of preparation methods, physical properties such as flexibility, magnetic performance, and durability are provided concerning sensitivity and selectivity enhancement, and improved control performance by optimizing material and film structure design. In addition, applications of flexible magnetic films in magnetic sensing, actuator and energy conversion are discussed, as well as the key challenges and the future direction of flexible magnetic films. Combining with other materials and devices can further expand their application areas.

Abstract:While the vast majority of integrated photonic devices are traditionally fabricated on rigid substrates, photonic integration of both passive and active photonic devices on flexible polymer substrates has been demonstrated in recent years, and its applications in imaging, sensing and optical interconnects are being actively pursued. This paper presents an overview of the emerging field of mechanically flexible photonics, where we examine material processing and mechanical design rationales dictated by application-specific optical functionalities. The examples include semiconductor nanomembranes which serve as the key enabling material for hybrid inorganic-organic flexible active photonics, and monolithically integrated passive photonic structures fabricated from semiconductors, polymers, or amorphous materials. Technical challenges and further research opportunities related to materials engineering and device integration on flexible substrates are also discussed. (c) 2013 Optical Society of America

Abstract:The deterministic release and rearrangement of thin solid films or inorganic nanomembranes on substrate surfaces offers exciting possibilities toward advanced integration strategies on a single chip, such as rolled-up nanotechnology, micro- and nano-origami, stretchable electronics, and thin membrane transfer. When a pre-stressed layer is released from substrate, it will be deformed as certain shapes by rolling or wrinkling because of its flexibility and built-in strain. Here, the details of such technology will be described as well as conceptual demonstrations for potential applications in e.g. tubular optical microcavity, microspring-based liquid flow rate sensor and tubular catalytic micromotors.

Abstract:The effective engineering applications of nanoporous metals (NPMs) in flexible energy storage and wearable healthcare biosensor monitoring require its uniform ligaments network, specifically crack-free and flexible monolithic bodies. However, the macroscopic fragility of NPMs restricts their applications in wearable electronics fields. Here we focus on the synthetization of highly flexible NPMs. The effects of structural factors, e.g. ligament-network connectivity and micro-cracks on the mechanical properties of nanoporous Ag (np Ag) are investigated. The well-interconnected np Ag metal exhibits higher tensile strength, nanohardness and Vickers hardness than those for the ill-interconnected np Ag metal. The quality of the network connectivity dominates the strength and hardness of the np Ag. The flexibility/fragility is determined by the micro-crack in np Ag. The crack-free np Ag exhibits good flexible behavior. When micro-cracks are introduced, the np Ag becomes fragile. The control of soft volume shrinkage rate (Vsr) and slow surface diffusivity (Ds) effectively suppresses the crack initiation and propagation of as-formed np Ag. These results provide useful insights to synthesize more flexible and crack-free NPM materials for effective use in public wearable electronics and diverse flexible engineering applications in the future.

Abstract:Nanocellulose has become a rising star in fabricating flexible materials owing to its unique structure and properties, and great progress is achieved. This review comprehensively summarizes the latest progress in the design, fabrication, and applications of nanocellulose‐based flexible materials, and the critical role of nanocellulose in constructing flexible materials is highlighted. With the increase of environmental pollution and depletion of fossil fuel resources, the utilization of renewable biomass resources for developing functional materials or fine chemicals is of great value and has attracted considerable attention. Nanocellulose, as a well‐known renewable nanomaterial, is regarded as a promising nano building block for advanced functional materials owing to its unique structure and properties, as well as natural abundance. Typically, its high mechanical strength, structural flexibility, reinforcing capabilities, and tunable self‐assembly behavior makes it highly attractive to fabricate flexible materials for various applications. Herein, the recent progress in the design, properties, and applications of advanced flexible materials from nanocellulose is comprehensively summarized. The preparation and properties of nanocellulose are first briefly introduced and discuss its merits in fabricating flexible materials. Then, various advanced flexible materials from nanocellulose are introduced, and the critical role of nanocellulose in constructing flexible materials is highlighted based on its intrinsic properties. After that, their applications in energy storage, electronics, sensor, biomedical, thermally insulating, photonic devices, etc., are presented. At last, the outlook of the current challenges and future perspectives for developing nanocellulose‐derived flexible materials are discussed.

Abstract:Miniaturization has been the driving force of scientific and technological advances over recent decades. Recently, flexibility has gained significant interest, particularly in miniaturization approaches for biomedical devices, wearable sensing technologies, and drug delivery. Flexible microfluidics is an emerging area that impacts upon a range of research areas including chemistry, electronics, biology, and medicine. Various materials with flexibility and stretchability have been used in flexible microfluidics. Flexible microchannels allow for strong fluid-structure interactions. Thus, they behave in a different way from rigid microchannels with fluid passing through them. This unique behaviour introduces new characteristics that can be deployed in microfluidic applications and functions such as valving, pumping, mixing, and separation. To date, a specialised review of flexible microfluidics that considers both the fundamentals and applications is missing in the literature. This review aims to provide a comprehensive summary including: (i) Materials used for fabrication of flexible microfluidics, (ii) basics and roles of flexibility on microfluidic functions, (iii) applications of flexible microfluidics in wearable electronics and biology, and (iv) future perspectives of flexible microfluidics. The review provides researchers and engineers with an extensive and updated understanding of the principles and applications of flexible microfluidics.

Abstract:2D materials are now at the forefront of state-of-the-art nanotechnologies due to their fascinating properties and unique structures. As expected, low-cost, high-volume, and high-quality 2D materials play an important role in the applications of flexible devices. Although considerable progress has been achieved in the integration of a series of novel 2D materials beyond graphene into flexible devices, a lot remains to be known. At this stage of their development, the key issues concern how to make further improvements to high-performance and scalable-production. Herein, recent progress in the quest to improve the current state of the art for 2D materials beyond graphene is reviewed. Namely, the properties and synthesis techniques of 2D materials are first introduced. Then, both the advantages and challenges of these 2D materials for flexible devices are also highlighted. Finally, important directions for future advancements toward efficient, low-cost, and stable flexible devices are outlined.

Abstract:This review discusses the recent reports on one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures with unusual flexibility. We discuss the importance that flexibility could have in future applications of nanowires and other nanostructures, and detail the two main approaches that have been followed to this day to synthesize highly flexible 1D nanostructures. One approach is based on making crystals in which one or two dimensions of the structure are comparable in size with the unit cell. Such thinness has been shown to provide unusual flexibility. Abstract:Flexible electronic sensors have widespread applications in both traditional and emerging fields, particularly for human-computer interaction (electronic skins, wearable electronic devices) and physical and environmental monitoring for people. Flexible electronic sensors can be bent and folded readily without interfering with their detecting performance. However, researchers still face many difficulties. For instance, traditional flexible materials (such as organic materials) are less sensitive to external signals, and the production progress of flexible sensors is complicated. This review recapitulates applications of nanomaterials in flexible electronic sensors. Firstly, the working principles and applications of three common types of flexible electronic sensors, the piezoresistive sensor, the capacitive sensor, and the piezoelectric sensor, are introduced. Then, the paper summarizes methods for improving sensors performance in health monitoring, disease diagnosis and biological detection by application of different nanomaterials to flexible substrates. Finally, the future development of flexible nanomaterial sensors prospects. It is found that nanocomposites of metal nanomaterials, carbon nanomaterials and other polymers with unique tuned photoelectrical properties show enhanced performance as flexible sensors and further research is needed to improve the material-substrate integration to promote the large-scale application as wearable sensors.
