Abstract:In Spring 2024, I met Radhika Desai for the first time at the London School of Economics and Political Science when we both held visiting positions at the Department of International Development as invited scholarly visitors. Although I had not expected her presence, I immediately recognized her after having been a reader of her works on geopolitical economy when developing my own ideas about the political economy of Chinese media and communications. I introduced myself and started talking with her, first at a coffee shop, then in a small office inside LSE’s Connaught House, and later at the Marx Memorial Library in London for a book launch party. Prompted by my questions rooted in the field of media and communication, Radhika Desai shared ideas from her newly published book, Capitalism, Coronavirus, and War: A Geopolitical Economy (Routledge, 2023), which is being translated into Chinese, her critiques about imperialism, globalization and essentially the world order after decades of neoliberalism, and, furthermore, her hopes for China, BRICS, and, ultimately, for the political left. Now, these conversations are turned into a dialogue piece, and with it I hope Communication and the Public readers will sense my gains from Radhika Desai, that is, to paraphrase from the famous line from the Communist Manifesto, in the digital age when all that is solid melts into ostensibly immaterial communication, man/woman is at last compelled to face with sober senses the real conditions of life and his or her relations with their kind.

Abstract:Since the late twentieth century, the subject of China becoming urban has appeared in the scholarship across the disciplines while spectacular images of China's cities, and narratives about their developmental achievements, have proliferated in global media. Simultaneously, the parallel "spatial turn" in social thought invigorated geographical approaches to cities and urban change. Yet at this promising meeting ground, between contemporary geographical thought and urban-industrial transformation in China, research has tended to demonstrate a "loss of space" through patterns of dependence on analog circulation of exemplar paradigms that derive from the history of the capitalist city and liberal political economy. What drives this condition and what do we know about its practices and proliferation? This inquiry challenges research design and the politics of theory to consider how routine adoption of capital-centric concepts for research on cities in China arguably reflects the priority of paradigms in the disciplines and their conjunctures with exemplarity in Chinese society and political philosophy. These interstices facilitate application of analog models, and selective adoption of empirical information to suit them, with the paradoxical result of portraying cities in China through multiple capitalist esthetics including a relatively narrow range of empirics framed by market-based social thought.

Abstract:At present, almost every scholar of the humanities and social sciences has noticed the fact that talking a lot about globalization has become an academic and intellectual fashion. Some do welcome the advent of globalization viewing it as a good opportunity to develop their career in a broader global context. Others are very afraid of this ghost, fearful that it might well engulf their research fields. It is true that for scholars and intellectuals from the Orient and Third World countries, what they are most anxious about is the (re)location of their culture in such an age of globalization, when cultures from different countries or nations are more and more homogenized and the identity of weak cultures more and more obscured. In the circles of Cultural Studies, this phenomenon, associated with the crisis of national identity and (re) construction of cultural identity, has also attracted the attention of both comparatists and cultural studies scholars. The present essay will first of all deal with the issue of globalization from a cultural and intellectual perspective: it will offer a restrospection on the state of the art of the study of globalization worldwide, and its positive and negative effect on current Chinese cultural and intellectual life as well as academic study. I should also point out that since cultural globalization, as a direct consequence of economic globalization, is beyond anyone's resistance, seeking a sort of Chinese national and cultural identity acquired vital significance to scholars of both comparative literature and cultural studies. To my mind, seeking such a Chinese national and cultural identity also has much to do with the construction or reconstruction of Chinese critical discourse, for in this respect globalization has certainly provided us with a rare opportunity to develop our national culture and literature.

Commoning Ethnography

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic returned the politics of ‘access’ to the forefront of anthropological discussion. This article offers a multimodal, autoethnographic account of ‘access’ across axes, foregrounding the biomedical, digital, bureaucratic and citizenship contingencies of arriving in China, a process which was for two of the authors, a process also of returning ‘home’. We employ the metaphor of the ‘blind box’, colloquially and commercially meaning a box containing mysterious toys, to unfold questions of power and uncertainty over one’s fate during pandemic travel. The article’s co-created comics, read alongside written narratives, convey affective environments, and aid our analysis of the changed and charged conditions of access. We therefore frame access through shifts in technological affordances, the affects they produce, and the risks and responsibilities that fieldworkers carry. We argue that in these stories, access becomes an experience to be lived through, saturated with the contingencies of technology as researchers find themselves subject to the fluid landscape of policy, shifting perceptions of ‘home’ and newly resonant parallels with earlier eras of ethnographic research in China.

Abstract:As one of the last remaining socialist countries with perhaps the fastest-growing economy in the world today, China presents a challenge to critical thinking about globalization. It is imperative that the question of alternatives and other possibilities and potentialities be raised in an attempt to theorize or conceptualize the process of globalization. Globalization is generally perceived as the result of the collapse of Soviet-style socialism, as well as the unprecedented expansion of transnational capitalism. While avowedly Eurocentric in its hegemonic formations, globalization also sets up an indispensable structural context for analyzing what happens in the world today. Therefore, globalization must be thought of as a dialectical process: it simultaneously refers to an idea, or an ideology (i.e., capitalism disguised as a triumphant, universal globalism), and to a concrete historical condition, by which various ideas, including capitalism in its present guise, must be measured. China's challenge to globalization can be perceived in both senses, first to global capitalism as an ideology, and then to the new world order, or world-system, as an accepted reality. Unwitting Agents: Representations of Chinese International Students in US-China Geopolitics

Abstract:As part of a larger study, this paper presents findings from my exploration of discourses about China-US geopolitics through popular discussions on Chinese international students (CIS) who are attending American universities during the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic. The study seeks to advance scholarship for international students attending American colleges, with particular implications for Chinese students, as agents of geopolitical relations. In doing so, it investigates (a) how these students are represented in American media and (b) the criticality of international geopolitics in the mobility of international students. The findings reveal that American popular media sources assume a tone when writing about CIS that may stem from a deeper anti-Chinese sentiment that exists in the US. They also suggest that American institutions of higher education, and American companies that employ CIS after graduation, treat these students as imported subjects/objects that support America's intellectual and economic advancement. In doing so, the media perpetuates narratives of geopolitical tensions between the United States and China, while representing CIS as unwitting agents of those tensions. The study seeks to advance scholarship on international students attending US colleges, particularly those from China, during an era of rising populism and right-wing movements in the US coupled with rapidly deteriorating US-China relations. Abstract:There is no doubt that the political economy of contemporary China has received significant attention, both in academic disciplines and in the real world. The role of the state in the economy and the relations between government and business actors have always been central concerns of classic social science works about China. There are, however, several crucial challenges in studying this topic. The complicated landscape of a multilayered, fragmented Chinese state and numerous state-owned, private, foreign, or mixed-type businesses has made it difficult to tease out their interactions and establish a comprehensive theoretical model. The fast-changing nature of state–market relations and their vast subnational and sectoral variation has often prevented scholars from generalizing those lessons beyond the case or issue area. Yet, among all these, the most daunting challenge is: How can studies of a particularly interesting phenomenon in China’s political economy contribute to broader discussions of state–society relations, regime durability, and state-led development without losing respectable country expertise?

Abstract:Although Fredric Jameson is a towering figure in theory and culture analysis in American academia and beyond, I am tempted to say that nowhere does he have more profound and overarching theoretical and intellectual influence as in post-Mao China. To many contemporary Chinese intellectuals who first exposed themselves to the post-Hegelian, post-Realist, and post-Philosophical discourse or what we call lilun (theory) today, terms like “critical theory,” “cultural criticism,” not to mention postmodernism as a theoretical discourse are either certifiable Jamesonian inventions, or else something thoroughly shaped and inspired by his theoretical presence. Ever since his 1985 visit to China, where he taught at Peking University during the entire Fall semester, Jameson as a text and his Literature Program at Duke have become a privileged place on an increasingly cosmopolitan intellectual map of new generations of Chinese students. Visiting scholars from the West, regardless of their intellectual background, academic specialization, and political persuasion have learned, sometimes uneasily, to anticipate questions from their stubborn Chinese students with persistent reference to Jameson’s work or the Jamesonian problematic.

Abstract:This paper assesses the sources of potential instability of China's political economy by expositing the limits of the post-Mao regime of capital accumulation in historical and comparative perspectives. It argues that the new spatial and socio-political orders under this regime, while propelling China's economic miracle, also contribute to the internalization of the global overaccumulation crisis, which has been haunting the world capitalist system since the late 1960s, into China's national economy. Whereas decentralization of regulatory authority of the state accelerates overinvestment among local economic agents, breakdown of the Maoist social compact and the subsequent class polarization foster underconsumption. The resulting structural imbalance of the economy leads to the risk of falling profit across key sectors and China's over-reliance on the export market, the expansion of which has hinged much on the debt-financed and unsustainable consumption spree in the US. A full-fledged overaccumulation crisis within China in the form of extensive bankruptcy of enterprise, surging unemployment and financial turmoil will certainly trigger extensive global repercussions, given China's weight in the global economy. This crisis, nonetheless, is not inevitable, and can plausibly be averted through a recentralization of the state's economic regulatory functions and income redistribution. No matter whether and how such a crisis unfolds, nonetheless, it is not likely to stop the shift of the center of gravity of global capitalism to Asia in the long run.

Abstract:In the current Chinese and international cultural and theoretical context globalisation has been one of the most heatedly debated topics of the past decade. This raises these questions: why should we Chinese humanities scholars deal with this topic with such enthusiasm? Has China really benefited from globalisation in its modernity project? How is globalisation realised in the Chinese context? How has it affected China's humanities and culture? The advent of globalisation in China is subject to various constructions and reconstructions in its glocalised practice. So it is actually a sort of glocalisation in the Chinese context. Based on my previous research and on others' publications, I offer my own reconstruction of globalisation with regard to its glocalised' practice in China. In the age of globalisation modernity has taken on a new look, or become a postmodern modernity, characterised by contemporary consumer culture. Along with the rapid development of its economy, China is now experiencing a sort of de-third-worldising' process, with its function increasingly important in the world.

Abstract:This article aims at engaging in a constructive dialogue with Philip Huang. We approach China's administrative governance and economy from different perspectives but arrive at similar and complementary characterizations. I argue that what makes any theory about China valuable and valid lies in its ability to penetrate both China's history and its present, link theory and evidence, go beyond left and right, and combine East and West. Since it has been dominated by Western standards, academic research about China should stand firmly on historical reality as well as constructive dialogue with Western doctrines, but with full awareness of their implicit assumptions, some of which are bundled with Western-specific experiences, and their potential conceptual traps when applied to China. As an ambitious goal, we also should seek to generalize the experiences of both East and West.

A Semantic Analysis of the Notion of Consultative Democracy: Xieshang Minzhu (协商民主) in the Chinese Official Political Discourses

Abstract:Abstract Chinese politics are characterized by the complex issues of a large population and centralized political powers, which offers a distinct political model from the Western models. However, the last two decades have witnessed a sharp collision between Chinese and Western political thinking. In response, domestic authors have increasingly focused on the indigenization (bentuhua 本土化) of Chinese political theories and, therefore, defend the concept of politics with Chinese characteristics. In this article, the authors focus on the discourse of “deliberative democracy” within the Chinese language, namely, Xieshang minzhu 协商民主. In the current literature, almost no scholarly discussions have explored the semantics of the notion of Xieshang minzhu within Chinese politics. This article engages with this issue, both as a subject and a methodology, to better understand the political language that has been used in the official discourses in China Official propaganda mainly includes five of China’s most authoritative official media (newspapers): People’s Daily (Renmin ribao 人民日报), Guangming Daily (Guangming ribao 光明日报), Xinhua Daily(Xinhua ribao 新华日报), China Comment (Banyutan 半月谈), Qiushi (Qiushi 求是, formerly known as Red Flag (Hongqi 红旗)), Xi Jinping’s series of important speech databases and official documents on the subject of Xieshang or Xieshang minzhu in the Party-Building Database. by 1) establishing a textual corpus by collecting relevant data into the Chinese and English groups through keywords; 2) conducting a statistical analysis based on the Word Cloud and Diagram analyses; and 3) using Word2Vec to calculate the relationship among other sub-keywords. The purpose of this contribution is to differentiate Xieshang minzhu as adopted by Chinese official discourses embedded in the logic of political reforms from the Western discourses. The semantic analysis presented here also serves as a methodology that systematically develops a conceptual model of xieshang , which further clarifies the misconceptions and errors in the existing literature. The authors also provide an outline of the polysemic notion of deliberative democracy, which not only exists within an authoritarian regime but is also present in other forms and other languages (such as Chinese). This serves to further maintain the legitimacy of the “socialist democracy with Chinese characteristics .”

Abstract:This essay aims to show the state and future of critical theories in China, with a discussion of the social and historical background of “the end of theory”. In this essay, the author explores the rise and fall of theories since the 1980s: the reception, influence and practice of western critical theories in China. According to the author, the discipline has always been a priori and strategically political, and the development of theories in China is closely related to the formation of China's literary modernity and globalization. Thus, the said ideological background indeed determines some of the concerns of Chinese scholars in their analyses of literature and art. Finally, the author argues for a redirection of Chinese theoretical practice into a more culture-oriented discipline, which is only a part of global capitalism.
Parochialism and Implications for Chinese Firms’ Globalization

Abstract:We explore the meaning of parochialism (xiao nong yi shi, (sic)(sic)(sic)) to explain certain paradoxical Chinese managerial behaviors. We discuss how cultural, political, and economic traditions in China formed a salient context to cultivate parochialism. Qualitative data from Chinese and American managers reveal that the conceptual framework of parochialism includes a cognitive dimension of closed-mindedness, a behavioral dimension of self-protection, and a relational dimension of in-group focused social relationship. Parochialism hampers effective globalization of Chinese firms because it negatively impacts key facets of organizational culture: employee development, communication, customer orientation, social responsibility, strategic planning, and innovation. The study offers theoretical and practical implications for Chinese management research and the development of global competence.

Abstract:Literature rooted in institutional theory and stakeholder theory offers conflicting views on the relationship between environmental corporate social responsibility (ECSR) and financial performance. However, both failed to explain why firms interpret this relationship variously which is subjective to a firm's strategic cognition. How firms interpret this relationship affects the ECSR decision and implementation. Drawing on the paradox theory, four hypotheses were proposed and examined using data from 170 manufacturing firms in China. This study found paradox strategic cognition positively affects ECSR. Legal enforcement inefficiency, competitive intensity and industrial power weaken the effect of paradox strategic cognition on ECSR.
