Abstract:In recent years, FRP confinement has been widely adopted to enhance the strength, deformation capacity and durability of concrete. Inspired by these superiorities, recycled lump concrete (RLC)-filled FRP tubes (RLCFFT) have been proposed to improve the mechanical performance of RLC. However, two significant issues remain unclear in RLCFFT: (1) to what extent does the beneficial effect of FRP confinement present; and (2) whether the axial compressive behavior is subject to size effect. To address this research gap, a total of 25 RLCFFT column specimens were tested under axial concentric loading in this study. The parameters investigated include thick-ness of GFRP tube, characteristic size of RCLs, RLCFFT column diameter (up to 400 mm) and height-to-diameter ratio of the column. The test results indicated that no appreciable size effect existed in the compressive behavior of RLCFFT columns with the same FRP confinement stiffness, and the stress-strain responses of RLCFFT columns were quite similar to those of FRP-confined normal concrete columns (without RCLs), indicating that the possible unfavorable effects caused by inclusion of RCLs were largely compensated by the FRP confinement. An analysis -oriented model originally proposed for FRP-confined normal concrete was employed to examine its applicability to RLCFFT columns and the assessment results were discussed.
