Abstract:Porous materials with engineered stretching-dominated lattice designs, which offer attractive mechanical properties with ultra-light weight and large surface area for wide-ranging applications, have recently achieved near-ideal linear scaling between stiffness and density. Here, rather than optimizing the microlattice topology, we explore a different approach to strengthen low-density structural materials by designing tube-in-tube beam structures. We develop a process to transform fully dense, three-dimensional printed polymeric beams into graphitic carbon hollow tube-in-tube sandwich morphologies, where, similar to grass stems, the inner and outer tubes are connected through a network of struts. Compression tests and computational modelling show that this change in beam morphology dramatically slows down the decrease in stiffness with decreasing density. In situ pillar compression experiments further demonstrate large deformation recovery after 30-50% compression and high specific damping merit index. Our strutted tube-in-tube design opens up the space and realizes highly desirable high modulus-low density and high modulus-high damping material structures.

Abstract:The carbon nanotube (CNT) is a compelling and promising material for industrial applications requiring high strength and rigidity. For a multi-walled CNT (MWCNT), the nominal tensile strength and Young's modulus (considering the whole cross-sectional area of the specimen) are key mechanical factors for the practical application of macroscopic fibers and composites. However, the nominal tensile strength and Young's modulus of MWCNTs are much lower than their effective tensile strength and Young's modulus (considering the fracture cross-sectional area) because the outermost graphite layer always fractures first due to the low cross-link between graphite layers. In this paper, we fabricated the carbon nanofibers (CNFs) by epitaxial growth on super-aligned MWCNT film template and conducted in situ uniaxial tensile tests on individual carbon-nanotube-templated CNFs. The individual CNFs show improved nominal mechanical performance than previously reported MWCNTs. The nominal mechanical properties enhancement of the CNFs is attributed to the effective control on load transfer between interwalls.

Abstract:Rings of bundled single-walled carbon nanotubes with perfectly toroidal geometries (see figure), are fabricated in high yields by a floating chemical vapor deposition process involving the thermal decomposition of acetylene. The nano-tube rings can be grown with varying densities on a wide variety of substrates at relatively low temperatures, which is a significant advantage for nanoelectronics applications.

Abstract:Using the composite graphite rods with the sulphide of iron group metals as anode, the double-wall carbon nanotubes have been fabricated by arc discharging under hydrogen atmosphere. By means of transmission electron microscope, it was found that the double-wall carbon nanotubes were formed in the inner-walls of the evaporation chamber and around the cathode.

Abstract:It has been a long-standing challenge in modern material design to create low-density, lightweight materials that are simultaneously robust against defects and can withstand extreme thermomechanical environments, as these properties are often mutually exclusive: The lower the density, the weaker and more fragile the material. Here, we develop a process to create nanoarchitected carbon that can attain specific strength (strength-to-density ratio) up to one to three orders of magnitude above that of existing micro- and nanoarchitected materials. We use two-photon lithography followed by pyrolysis in a vacuum at 900 °C to fabricate pyrolytic carbon in two topologies, octet- and iso-truss, with unit-cell dimensions of ∼2 μm, beam diameters between 261 nm and 679 nm, and densities of 0.24 to 1.0 g/cm3 Experiments and simulations demonstrate that for densities higher than 0.95 g/cm3 the nanolattices become insensitive to fabrication-induced defects, allowing them to attain nearly theoretical strength of the constituent material. The combination of high specific strength, low density, and extensive deformability before failure lends such nanoarchitected carbon to being a particularly promising candidate for applications under harsh thermomechanical environments.

Abstract:Materials can be made strong, but as such they are often brittle and prone to fracture when under stress. Inspired by the exceptionally strong and ductile structure of byssal threads found in certain mussels, we have designed and manufactured a multi-hierarchical steel, based on an inexpensive austenitic stainless steel, which defeats this "conflict" by possessing both superior strength and ductility. These excellent mechanical properties are realized by structurally introducing sandwich structures at both the macro- and nano-scales, the latter via an isometric, alternating, dual-phase crystal phases comprising nano-band austenite and nano-lamellar martensite, without change in chemical composition. Our experiments (transmission and scanning electron microscopy, electron back-scattered diffraction, nano-indentation and tensile tests) and micromechanics simulation results reveal a synergy of mechanisms underlying such exceptional properties. This synergy is key to the development of vastly superior mechanical properties, and may provide a unique strategy for the future development of new super strong and tough (damage-tolerant), lightweight and inexpensive structural materials.

Abstract:The construction of multilayered arched nanobridges and nanocantilever structures from silver nanowires using a photothermal-induced nanobonding technique is reported by Qiang Li and co-workers in article number 1800807. The multilayered arch nanobridges are used as short-circuit-free multipronged electronic connections in nanoelectronic devices. Both types of nanostructure also exhibit excellent mechanical strength and show potential for use in biological sensors.

Abstract:We report a unique approach for the fabrication of a family of curling tubular nanostructures rapidly created by a rolling up of carbon membranes under in situ TEM electron beam irradiation. Multiwall tubes can also be created if irradiation by electron beam is performed long enough. This general approach can be extended to curve the conductive carbon film loaded with various functional nanomaterials, such as nanocrystals, nanorods, nanowires, and nanosheets, providing a unique strategy to make composite tubular structures and composite materials by a combination of desired optical, electronic, and magnetic properties, which could find potential applications, including fluid transportation, encapsulation, and capillarity on the nanometer scale.
Nano-architected Metamaterials: Carbon Nanotube-Based Nanotrusses

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel face-centered cubic (fcc) lattice-like nanotruss with carbon nanotubes and newly designed 12-terminal junctions as building blocks. Using molecular dynamics simulation, both thermal and mechanical properties of this novel nano-architected metamaterials are systematically predicted and a comparison study is conducted between fcc and simple cubic lattice-like nanotrusses. Our findings demonstrate that the fcc lattice-like nanotrusses have relatively low thermal conductivity κ=1.24∼3.31W/(m⋅K) and reasonably high specific modulus M=49.79∼114.15MN⋅m/kg in all three directions ([100], [110], [111]), for a material density in the range of ρ=0.23∼0.82g/cm3. Depending on the specific requirements in material design, the widely ranged Young's modulus E and thermal conductivity κ of nano-architected metamaterials can be tuned by changing the tube length. All the aforementioned advantages can be maintained at a high temperature up to 3000K, which indicates fcc lattice-like nanotrusses are superior to most existing mechanically robust thermal insulators. To showcase the scale independency of the unprecedented properties of the proposed nano-architected metamaterials, thermal and mechanical properties of their macroscopic counterparts are studied using standard mechanics multiscale homogenization.

Abstract:Carbon nanotube (CNT) and graphene-based sponges and aerogels have an isotropic porous structure and their mechanical strength and stability are relatively lower. Here, we present a junction-welding approach to fabricate porous CNT solids in which all CNTs are coated and welded in situ by an amorphous carbon layer, forming an integral three-dimensional scaffold with fixed joints. The resulting CNT solids are robust, yet still highly porous and compressible, with compressive strengths up to 72 MPa, flexural strengths up to 33 MPa and fatigue resistance (recovery after 100,000 large-strain compression cycles at high frequency). Significant enhancement of mechanical properties is attributed to the welding-induced interconnection and reinforcement of structural units and synergistic effects stemming from the core-shell microstructures consisting of a flexible CNT framework and a rigid amorphous carbon shell. Our results provide a simple and effective method to manufacture high-strength porous materials by nanoscale welding.

Abstract:This paper will focus on the directed assembly of multiwalled carbon nanotubes on various substrates into highly organized structures that include vertically and horizontally oriented arrays, ordered fibers and porous membranes. The concept of growing such architectures is based on growth selectivity on certain surfaces compared to others. Selective placement of ordered nanotube arrays is achieved on patterned templates prepared by lithography or oxide templates with well-defined pores. The growth of nanotubes is achieved by chemical vapor deposition using hydrocarbon precursors and vapor phase catalyst delivery. The new technique developed in our laboratory allows enormous flexibility in building a large number of complex structures based on nanotube building units. This paper will provide an insight into the creation process of the longest (single walled) nanotube strands. We will also discuss some of our recent efforts in creating nanotube circuits selectively and controllably and on the spatially resolved electronic properties of nanotubes.

Abstract:Architected metals and ceramics with nanoscale cellular designs, e.g., nanolattices, are currently subject of extensive investigation. By harnessing extreme material size effects, nanolattices demonstrated classically inaccessible properties at low density, with exceptional potential for superior lightweight materials. This study expands the concept of nanoarchitecture to dense metal/ceramic composites, presenting co-continuous architectures of three-dimensional printed pyrolytic carbon shell reinforcements and electrodeposited nickel matrices. We demonstrate ductile compressive deformability with elongated ultrahigh strength plateaus, resulting in an extremely high combination of compressive strength and strain energy absorption. Simultaneously, property-to-weight ratios outperform those of lightweight nanolattices. Superior to cellular nanoarchitectures, interpenetrating nanocomposites may combine multiple size-dependent characteristics, whether mechanical or functional, which are radically antagonistic in existing materials. This provides a pathway toward previously unobtainable multifunctionality, extending far beyond lightweight structure applications.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes have the potential to construct highly compressible and elastic macroscopic structures such as films, aerogels and sponges. The structure-related deformation mechanism determines the mechanical behavior of those structures and niche applications. Here, we show a novel strategy to integrate aligned and random nanotube layers and reveal their deformation mechanism under uniaxial compression with a Large range of strain and cyclic testing. Integrated nanotube Layers deform sequentially with different mechanisms due to the distinct morphology of each Layer. While the aligned Layer forms buckles under compression, nanotubes in the random Layer tend to be parallel and form bundles, resulting in the integration of quite different properties (strength and stiffness) and correspondingly distinct plateau regions in the stress-strain curves. Our results indicate a great promise of constructing hierarchical carbon nanotube structures with tailored energy absorption properties, for applications such as cushioning and buffering Layers in microelectromechanical systems.

Strong and Flexible Braiding Pattern of Carbon Nanotubes for Composites: Stiff and Robust Structure Active in Composite Materials

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) exhibit high strength, Young's modulus, and flexibility and serve as an ideal reinforcement for composite materials. Owing to their toughness against bending and/or twisting, they are typically used as fabric composites. The conventional multiaxial braiding method lacks tension and resultant strength in the thickness direction. Some braiding patterns are proposed; however, they may have shortcomings in flexibility. Thus, this study proposed three types of braiding pattern for fabrics based on natural products such as spider net and honeycomb, in accordance with thickness-direction strength. The spider-net-based structure included wefts with spaces in the center with overlapping warps. At both sides, the warps crossed and contacted the wefts to impart solidness to the structure and enhance its strength as well as flexural stability. In addition, box-type wefts were proposed by unifying the weft and warps into boxes, which enhanced the stability and flexibility of the framework. Finally, we proposed a structure based on rectangular and hexagonal shapes mimicking the honeycomb. Moreover, finite element calculations were performed to investigate the mechanisms through which the proposed structures garnered strength and deformation ability. The average stress in fabrics becomes smaller than half (43%) when four edges are restrained and sliding is inserted. Under three-dimensional forces, our proposed structures underwent mechanisms of wrapping, warping, sliding and doubling, and partial locking to demonstrate their enhanced mechanical properties. Furthermore, we proposed a hierarchical structure specialized for CNTs, which could facilitate applications in structural components of satellites, wind turbines, and ships. The hierarchical structure utilizing discontinuity and sliding benefits the usage for practical mechanical systems.
Nanoporous amorphous carbon nanopillars with lightweight, ultrahigh strength, large fracture strain, and high damping capability

Abstract:Simultaneous achievement of lightweight, ultrahigh strength, large fracture strain, and high damping capability is challenging because some of these mechanical properties are mutually exclusive. Here, we utilize self-assembled polymeric carbon precursor materials in combination with scalable nano-imprinting lithography to produce nanoporous carbon nanopillars. Remarkably, nanoporosity induced via sacrificial template significantly reduces the mass density of amorphous carbon to 0.66 ~ 0.82 g cm-3 while the yield and fracture strengths of nanoporous carbon nanopillars are higher than those of most engineering materials with the similar mass density. Moreover, these nanopillars display both elastic and plastic behavior with large fracture strain. A reversible part of the sp2-to-sp3 transition produces large elastic strain and a high loss factor (up to 0.033) comparable to Ni-Ti shape memory alloys. The irreversible part of the sp2-to-sp3 transition enables plastic deformation, leading to a large fracture strain of up to 35%. These findings are substantiated using simulation studies. None of the existing structural materials exhibit a comparable combination of mass density, strength, deformability, and damping capability. Hence, the results of this study illustrate the potential of both dense and nanoporous amorphous carbon materials as superior structural nanomaterials.
